VGA BIOS Upgrade

Hi,
i have a MSI 7800GTX installed in a Windows X86_64 machine and would like to know how I can update the cards BIOS as the update software does not work on this platform ?
TIA

To add... MSI's Live update software probably doesn't have an update for that card since it is so new. Cards are not like motherboards. And nVidia usually get's it right the first time around. I believe MSI stuck to the reference design. In fact, it may very well be that card is likely manufactured for nVidia by contract manufacturers, then sent to MSI. This is very common with initial releases to maintain a high level of quality control.
The only reason (in this case) someone would want to mess with BIOS upgrades or modded BIOS's, is to try to get more performance out of it. If you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing, you CAN render your investment useless. And there are no serious bugs that I am aware of. As Stu mentions, in the case of a specific issue, or functionality, there would be something, however, this seems like a pretty successeful release for a change.

  • VGA Bios questions...

My VGA card is MSI FX5600-TD256.
    Here are my questions:
1)Which is the latest Bios version for my card? My current version is 4.31.20.39.00. Is there a newer one? Searching through the web I found another version including this text in the read me file:
    Quote
    MSI GeForce FX BIOS
Name     : GeForce FX 5600 BIOS
    Version  : 4.31.20.69.00    Ultra : No
2)Is it worth updating the bios? (I have restart problems probably caused by graphics card...)
3)Which is the proccess I have to follow to update it? (Just copy the .rom file in a disk and boot from that disk??)
4)Why in MSI site there are no VGA Bios files?
5)How do I back up my current VGA bios version?
    Thanks in advance...

If MSI live Update finds no BIOS upgrade then there is no BIOS upgrade available. Even if there is one available, I don't recommend updating VGA BIOS unless there is a known documented issue relating to your problem. As far as I know there is no issue currently. I have not come across this issue in these forums either.
I don't have any answers to your restart problem since you did not provide any details of this restart problem. I cannot guarantee I would even if you did, but do so anyway.
I never update VGA BIOS's so I can't help you on backing up your current VGA BIOS. Someone else will have to step in for that.
The MSI site doesn't archive VGA BIOS files for the public. MSI only updates the original VGA BIOS from nVidia in circumstances such as when they decide to use a different RAM package than specified from nVidia spec. Oftentimes I see users reporting that MSI Live Update hosed their VGA BIOS after an update and in a few circumstances I have been able to request the original BIOS file.
Again, it's not worth updating the VGA BIOS as they get it right the first time and they hardly ever deviate from the original nVidia BIOS unless a certain RAM package is used for say an OEM version of the card or a performance version where they may use a faster package etc.
I recommend looking elsewhere for your restart problem.

  • Downgrade vga bios

    Hi ,
I have a NX6600GT VTD128 and I have updated  ( big mistake ) the vga bios to the latest version using Live update.
The current bios is 5.43.02.64.00 but I don't have the previous one.
The thing is that i lost the temp readings from the display manager .
Is there any way I can retrieve the previous bios version?
I did the upgrade because I had some artifacts when using 3d models in Autocad and when playing games ( Freelancer ) and I still
having them even after formatting the HDD.
After formatting I use first the MSI drivers , I unistall them and use the latest NV drivers (Fware 93.71 )
    Still the same.
    thanks

Coolbits is simply a small file that adds registry entries so that hidden capabilities in the nVidia settings panel become available.  You can get Coolbits from Guru3D, http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815 .   RivaTuner has even more capabilities, http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner&menu=8
    Quote from: Guru3D
    Software Description
Coolbits 2 unleashes hidden function within ForceWare drivers, it enables several new Direct3d and OpenGL configuration tabs, and even more tweaking capability from the nVidia taskbar settings panel.
    FAQ:
    Q. I dont see the temperature settings, is this due to my card?
    A. The temp settings panel is only available with cards equipped with thermal sensors. Some cards that I know of have temp sensors are 5700 Ultra, 5800 Ultra, 5900 non-Ultra and Ultra, and 5950 ultra. But really it all comes down to the manufacturer. I have seen some 5700 and 5900 without temp sensor, but mainly the cheaper XT/LX/SE versions.
    Q. The Fan always on doesn`t seem to work
    A. The 'fan always on' option is for cards with the OTES (i.e. 5800U) or similar cooling system in which shuts off in 2d mode. It will force fan on even in 2D mode. Of course this means the fans on the hs/f be designed such a way that this option can work.
    Q. I thought it enabled Opengl 2.0. It doesn't though.
    A. OpenGL Shading Language 2.0 can only be enabled on 55.xx and higher Forceware drivers. It had not yet been implemented in older Detonator or pre 55 Forceware drivers.
    Q. Where is the application profiles page?
    A. It has been disabled to allow for OpenGL and Direct3d tabs. You can re-enable the application profiles page by changing its respective value to 1 in the coolbits file.
If you experience any minor problems, simply uninstall/reinstall your display driver. I would recommend using Driver Cleaner as well, especially when switching driver versions.
Unpack the achive (self extracting) and then in the setup directory simply click on the .reg file. To get to these options simply right-click on your desktop and go to 'NVIDIA Analog Display' (Win XP/2003). For Win 2000 and lower you may need to get to the Nvidia Control Panel the old way. Right click desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce xxxx
*NOTE: Coolbits 2 is not fully compatible with driver versions older than 55.xx. If you do happen to run this tweak with drivers older than 55.xx you will more than likely get errors at startup! To enable full compatibility, you must disable the options that are causing issues with your current setup.

  • VGA Bios states "Engineering Release"

    Hi Folks,
I recently installed the K7N2G-LISR MB for a family member. After delivery I noticed the message in the VGA Bios of "Engineering Sample, not for production use" in the POST. Now, before I get my shorts in a twist, is this refering to the MB or can this be resolved by updating the BIOS? I got the board from a local shop with a good history. Any thoughts?
                                               Thanks!

Explain that you have a reference BIOS, and that you need to upgrade to the latest revision.  I did this for my 6200 that had the same problem; within one business day, MSI emailed me a new BIOS.  For those of you that have the MSI NX6200AX 128, you can download the BIOS they sent me from my website:

The difference between this and other Ti4200-8x is it has dual VGA output compare to others' VGA + DVI.
    Have you tried Live-Update?
May I know why do you need the VGA BIOS? Is the card flawed? Is the RAM on the card running slower? Is there any artifacts? If you don't have this problem, you don't need to update any VGA BIOS.

  • 5900XT BIOS Upgrade Info

    Hi guys,
I have not used live monitor for a few weeks and now for the 1st time it found a new bios (Current Ver. 4.35.20.38.00  Online Ver. 4.35.20.38.14)
I am a bit skeptical you could say about the update since I have not updated this VC before, but have done some other VC's bios update. I wanted to see what's new with this version (fixes etc) but I searched MSI's web site and did not even find the update there, only live monitor found it.
Can anyone point me to the page (if it exists) where I can look this info before I actually go ahead and apply the update? I want to see if it's worth the danger of this update.
BTW, if the update (God forbids) fails, is that covered by the warranty provided I am using their own updates and not a 3rd party one?
thnx to all those who will take the time to read, and answer my inquries.

well if your video card is running perfectly at the moment, i see no need to update the VGA BIOS. just ignore it.
that's what I am thinking as well, just wanted to know the info on this update... their must be a reason behind releasing it, right? so just wanted to know what changes this upgrade brings

  • K8MM-V 7142 updated vga bios

i have a couple of system using k8mm-v board which has VIA/S3 UnichromePro IGP, recently we have upgraded most monitor to 17"/19" Wide screeen LCD, here the problem come, the onboard vga bios does not support those wxga resolution like 1440x900 or 1650x1024, google around found this is related to vga bios issue, not driver. i have updated those system to ver 1A bios, vga bios seems remain the unchanged. is there any service/beta bios available to fix this problem? tq.

these are only low end sempron powered (tats the whole point for all-in-one board) office station which only do basic office documents/spreadsheets work & internet browsing, nothing more nothing less. pretty no point buying new display card for this. even a 5 years old 845g onboard display driving the wide screen lcd without any problem (their vga bios updated with driver though).

    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119615.0
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=120513.0
I've carried out the same out-of-box tests indicated in 119615.0 without success.
    Question:
Is it possible to force the existing system to boot to the FDD where the BIOS upgrade (v 1.2) would be stored ready for use? If yes, kindly outline the necessary steps to be carried out and please point me to the correct BIOS upgrade link for this configuration. If all else fails, MOBO can be exchanged but if BIOS can be upgraded via this method, I prefer this approach. I don't have access to an alternative CPU, so that approach is far less than ideal. Thanks for your assistance.

Is it possible to force the existing system to boot to the FDD where the BIOS upgrade (v 1.2) would be stored ready for use?
Yes, in theory it is possible to try an AMI BIOS Recovery Flash. However, in case their are other problems that are not visible because of the current problem, it is rather risky.  If there is a memory problem or something similar that is currently undetected, the system may crash during flashing and your board will be rendered useless.
    Quote
f yes, kindly outline the necessary steps
    What you need:
    - you need an internal floppy drive (properly connected to the board and 100% intact)
    - you need an empty & formated floppy disk (make sure you check it for errors before you use it)
    - you need a PS/2 Keyboard
    What you have to do:
    - download the latest BIOS-Archive file from here:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
    - extract the BIOS File (e.g. A7380NMS.120), rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM [not AMIBOOT.120.ROM] and copy it to the floppy disk
    - insert the prepared floppy disk into the floppy drive attached to the P7N SLI Platinum and Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU
    - start the system and hit CTRL + HOME to force the system into recovery mode
If that does not work, try a different floppy drive & disk.  Don't complain is the system crashes during flashing if the recovery flash starts (system stability is your responsibility).
If you can't get the recovery routine to start and read the AMIBOOT.ROM file from the floppy disk, you need to install a supported processor.

  • Help Please - X200 will not boot after Bios Upgrade - keeps asking for power on password

    Hi there,
I am new to this forum and please let me say a big Thank You for your help in advance.
I am using a lenovo thinkpad x200 running windows vista with service pack 1.
The laptop has always been running fine and has never given me any issues. Unfortunately, all this came to an end yesterday when I ran the system assistant which did a round of updates and it prompted me to reflash my bios.
I did what was instructed and closed all open applications and after the laptop restarted, there was a noise from the harddisk (the sound was basically like what happens if the harddisk suddenly loses power). Then, all i got was a black screen, no harddisk acitvity with only the power cable LED and another LED (with the shape of a N tiled at 20 degrees) on.
I searched the forum and did what was suggested in this entry: http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Blank-screen-after-Bios-Upgrade-on-X200/ta-p/29...
This is what I did so far"
I turned off the power, took out the backup battery and waited for about 30 minutes (repeated this step several times, also removing the harddisk) but to no avail.
I removed the RAM and tried booting and there was that characteristic beeping sound.
I replaced the RAM, redid the CMOS clearing, and now there is the Lenovo startup screen. However, there would be an error code 0271 (no date time) and 0251 (something about default configuration). Then, these disappear and all I am left with is the Bios Power On password prompt. Somehow no matter what I type nothing can be input into the field (and I did not create any password as far as I can remember).
I redid the clearing for the power on password by removing the backup battery as suggested at the bottom of this page http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=migr-59377   but it is no use. Each time I restart, even if I press the blue Think Vantage button or F1 or F11, I still get the same 0271 and 0251 error messages and am left with the power on password prompt.
I am really desperate as I really like my lenovo x200 and there is important data on the laptop. I would appreciate any suggestions on how I can solve this. Its amazing how a simple update can turn into such a disaster. Now i know i should never upgrade or update my Bios (or at least proceed with extreme caution).
Anyone can provide some help to get my laptop workin again?
    Thank you very much,
    Mark

  • ProBook 4420s won't read DVDs, probable cause: BIOS upgrade (09-09-2011 F20). Audio CDs OK.

    Hi, everybody.
ProBook 4420s is not recognizing DVD media.  Drive is HP CDDVDW TS-L633N.
Recently ran HP Support Assistant to install most recent updates, and suspect the BIOS upgrade may be the cause.  Now at version 68AHH F.20 09/09/2011.
It's not an operating system issue, for it no longer boots from bootable DVDs either.
    Audio CDs are propperly recognized.
    Running Windows 7 x64 w/SP1 + latest updates.
If not BIOS, I would suspect a hardware failure affecting the "DVD-related" components of the drive.
    Please advice.
    Thanks,

  • G50-30 System is unstable after BIOS upgrade

After installing Windows 7 I decided to upgrade BIOS and picked the proposed update for Windows 7 64bit (http://support.lenovo.com/uu/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/g50-30-notebook-lenovo).
After applying the upgrade system boot failed. This issue was fixed using yapha7's advice (see this thread: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-B-and-G-Series-Notebooks/Lenovo-G50-30-Bios-update-crashed-installed-win-7/m-p/1693051#M32265).
Well, OS boots. But now I can draw violet lines on a viewport by pressing two mouse buttons simultaneously. WLAN breaks periodically, gets fixed by a reconnection. CPU consumption increases without any resorce-intensive task being launched. It iss understood that latter two issues might not be related to a BIOS upgrade. But they all appeared shortly after the upgrade.
Also it is not clear if I'm able to use USB 3.0?
The current BIOS version is A7CN47WW. Is it possible to rollback? Can you provide the original / any stable BIOS version (for Lenovo G50-30 Windows 7 x64) which is prior to the one available at the drivers download page? Thank you!

    hi a_demenkov,
Just to check, have you considered reinstalling Win7 after you got the issues that you described after flashing the BIOs to v47?
If you're leaning towards downgrading to the BIOS to v45, try the following:
    1. Boot into the BIOs and enable BIOS Back Flash.
        - Sample image
    2. The BIOS v45 download link is not listed but if you look at the the BIOS v47 file below, you should be able to get v45 by renaming:
    BIOS v47

    to
    BIOS  v45

  • VGA bios - Geforce 4 MX 460 VTP

    Hi
How download the VGA Bios for my Geforce 4 MX 460 VTP ???
    thanks

you have to use Live Update to search any BIOS image. However, i dont recommend you to do this because Live update is known to make die video boards. If you have any problem related to BIOS, it is better to keep dealing with those problems instead of getting a death video card. Anyway if you really want to flash the BIOS, first look for a green jumper on the card. It is the TwinBIOS function, to recover original BIOS without losing the video card. If you dont have this jumper, then i STRONGLY recommend not to flash your video card BIOS!
