VGA cable extension causing resolution problems

Pavilion 6507c with HP 2010i monitor, Windows 7 64-bit.  I am trying to separate the CPU and monitor by a few feet more than the original  6' VGA cable allows.  Have tried an extension plus original, and also a single longer cable. With anything but the short original cable, the computer no longer recognizes the monitor - it shows it as Generic non-PnP, and will not allow 1600:900, so the picture is stretched. Re-installed 2010i drivers - still comes up generic.
Is there any way to extend the monitor distance without sacrificing proper resolution?
This question was solved.

I wouldn't be too concerned about receiving a no signal message when shutting the PC down.  With a longer cable, the signal may degrade sooner causing the no signal message to appear during the shutdown process.
Displays work by the monitor sending the EDID information to the PC and this is part of how the PC identifies what resolutions are available to this monitor.  The original cable is allowing this information to be sent from the monitor back to the PC.  The PC then retains this information which is what allows it to work with the longer cable after swapping out the 6' VGA cable for a longer or extended one.  Once the system is shutdown, the EDID information is lost.  This is why it doesn't work once the system is shutdown and started with an extended or long cable.
You did mention an important difference between the cables: the lack of a ferrite core.  This Wikipedia entry discusses ferrite beads (aka: ferrite core) and what use they have.  Essentially, it reduces the level of interference which could cause the EDID information to be lost before reaching the PC.  This is more noticeable when using a long cable, so this could be due to the lack of the ferrite core.  However, the adapter listed in my previous post should rectify the resolution issue (though, it would still be listed as a generic PnP monitor).
I would weigh the cost of a cable with the ferrite core against the cost of getting an EDID emulator and select the cheaper option.  I know an EDID emulator will rectify this issue, but I cannot say that getting a cable with the ferrite core will correct this issue with 100% certainty.  I do know not having a ferrite core can cause signal quality issues.  If you can still exchange the cables, then that may be the cheaper option.
Let me know what happens.

  • Vga switch causing resolution problems

Hi, I recently bought a VGA switch by MayFlash so that i could share my 22" widescreen LG monitor with both my x360 and my mac mini. The problem I have is that when i was running my mac mini directly into the monitor via vga cable (with a built in DVI adaptor) the display was instantly recongnised by my mac and displayed at the correct 1680x1050 resolution. However, now im running it through the switch im having all sorts of res problems, firstly the mac doesnt seem to be able to detect the monitor anymore and i have a massive list of resolutions to choose from none of which go up to 1680x1050. All of the resolutions are unsuitable as they are lower res and crop / stretch the screen image. The manufacturer of the switch claim there should be no loss of signal and i've tried upgrading the vga cables im using to superior quality ones to no avail, any ideas?

Likely the easiest thing to do will be to use SwitchRes X to restore 1680 x 1050 as a choice within Displays preferences.

  • VGA cable extension -or- extending the reach of Solaris

I purchased a 15ft TRIPP LITE VGA monitor extension cable. This cable does not work with Solaris 10, but does work with Windows! The Solaris graphical interface does not want to load with the extension cable in place.
Why? And what can I do about the situation. Will a Gefen VGA through coax solution work with Solaris? Or is there another way to do this?
Helping me figure out how to move a Solaris computer a few feet away from my desk will help save my hearing.

I would love to create a connection from the router to my computer. I don't need or want it to be wireless. It's not like I'm hauling this computer around the house, and there is a cat 5 jack about 1 foot from my computer. Any idea how this is done? Even in theory?
We have Comcast hi-speed internet and they offer "home networking" wired or wireless but unfortunately "At this time, Comcast Home Networking does not support Macintosh computers." (you have to dig pretty deep to find that out). I have no real concept of how the cat 5 wiring and the highspeed internet work together.

  • VGA cable question, and a problem

My PowerBook is connected to my 17" LCD via the cable that was included with the monitor. I bought a replacement VGA cable the other day. (I needed the original VGA cable to connect my Mac mini to the TV.) The original cable works perfectly with both the LCD and the TV. With the new cable there's visible ghosting appearing when connected to both the LCD and to the TV. What the ****? It's a brand new cable. It's a "Replacement/Switchbox Cable VGA/SVGA High Desnsity DB15 Male/Male" cable. Is that what I need? I noticed that the original cable has 15 pins and the new cable only has 14. Is that the problem? I didn't see any 15 pin cables at CompUSA.
Do I have a bad cable? To I need to return it in exchange for something else? What gives?

    Welcome to the discussions Michael,
It sounds like a poor quality cable - either an individual dud or just a bad brand. I wouldn't worry about the missing pin - VGA cables have three pins that aren't used for anything, so manufactures often leave one or more of them out.
Take it back and look for a good quality shielded cable. Ask the the staff if necessary. It may cost you more than you spent on the one you currently have. Try looking for a Belkin cable - they're usually a good brand (assuming your current cable isn't made by them...)

  • Mini Displayport to VGA and Dell P2211H resolution problem

    Hello,
I have just brought a Dell P2211H monitor, which supports 1920x1080 native resolution, but when I connect it to my MacBook 13" using the mini displayport to VGA adapter the maximum resolution I can choose is 1360x768, how can I force a 1920x1080 resolution?

Are you in Mirrored Mode or Extended Mode? In order to get that kind of resolution, you need to be in Extended Mode by going to Display Preferences and unclicking Mirrored.

  • Mini-VGA to S-video resolution problems.

I have recently hooked up a Apple Video Adapter that connects from my 17" iMac 1.8 GHz G5 Mini-VGA port to the S-video port on my RCA TV. My problem is that while it is plugged in I cannot put my iMac resolution at the proper 1440 x 900 because the option is not there. In order to get the 1440 x 900 option back, I have to unplug the adapter. How can I fix this so I don't have to unplug the adapter?

Had the same problem here (drove me crazy) Search for ScreenSpanningDoctor. It will easily solve your problem.

  • VGA cable external monitor

I have a 2010 27 iMac and an external 22 inch Viewsonic monitor.
    1. The monitor and VGA cable are about 5 years old.
    2. I have the correct mini display port to VGA adaptor from Apple.
    3. The external monitor works, however, it works only after I try to turn it on 5 to 25 times.
    Aggravating in the extreme.
Could this be a problem with a low-quality or old VGA cable?
Would a brand new (higher quality, if so what kind) VGA cable?
I read this could be a problem with a video card, but I presume my 2010 iMac has a good card.
In short, would a new VGA cable likely solve the problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi, Lil,
What is the downside in connecting the monitor with DVI? Digital is better than analog for image quality anyway.
That being said, I have tried VGA from my dock in the past, with no odd symptoms such as the ones you are describing. You certainly don't want to get stuck with a defective dock. Are you using the same cable to attach the monitor whether it be to the dock or direct?

  • HDMI vs VGA cable

Hi, I just bought a mini Display port - DVI adapter + HDMI-DVI cable, but i notice some issues.
I think the quality of image on my Full HD tv is worse than when i connect the MBP to the tv with the VGA cable.
I tried to draw a single pixel on Photoshop and to see it on the tv:
    - with the VGA cable, selecting 1920x1080 resolution, it makes black a single pixel on the tv
    - with the HDMI cable, now it shows the resolution named 1080p in the monitor properties, i select it and i don't see a single black pixel, instead i see a diffused one.
What should i change in order to properly see a full hd video on my full hd television?

It sounds like perhaps the TV is overscanning when connected by HDMI and so the image is scaled and pixels are not one-for-one as they should be. One way to check for overscan would be to make the TV the primary Mac screen by running the MBP in closed clamshell mode so that only the TV is active and the MBP's internal screen is off. Instructions for doing this can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
If the TV is indeed overscanning when running from HDMI, you will have to refer to your TV's manual to see how to change among the various screen size options available through the TV's menu system. Hopefully there will be a setting that allows exact one-for-one display of pixels.
Also check the TV's manual for a Sharpness setting. Many TVs have a default sharpness setting that doesn't work well with computer text and graphics.

  • New 2012 Mac mini having screen resolution problem when I connect to either 27" LG or 22" Hannspree monitor. Tried mini display port to VGA/HDMI and HDMI to DVI-D cables... all same isse

New 2012 Mac mini having issues in connecting to third party Monitors. Connected my mac mini to a 27" LG monitor. Text looks blurred. Tried connecting to the monitor using 3 options. 1) mini port to HDMI, then HDMI cable to LG monitor. 2) Mini port to VGA, then VGA cable to monitor 3) HDMI port on mini mac to DVI-D cable then DVI to DVI cable... In all cases text is not clear. Anyone has similar issues with latest mini mac. The monitor works fine when I connect to a windows 7 Samsung laptop. Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Why do you use always 2 cables? There's a lot that can go wrong.
    1.) Hardware:
    - Use only one cable, best an HDMI->HDMI cable. It doesn't need to be an expensive one, they've proven to be no worse than those "esoteric", expensive ones.
    - Set the monitor to the HDMI input.
    - The modes you are listing are only "picture modes" changing color/brightness/contrast settings, not resolution or the likes, so pick the one you like best later, or enter your own settings under Custom.
    2.) OS X:
    - Usually the Mac detects the screen itself and chooses the best settings, so by default you need to do nothing than make a proper hardware connection to get a decent image.
    - However, there have been issues with new Mac Minis and particularly their HDMI ports. But reportedly they have been fixed with a software update. So, launch the App Store and check under Updates if there is one for you to install. If so, do it; otherwise you should be good to go.
    - If you require, go to System Preferences -> Displays. In the Dispaly tab, by default, "Best for display" should be selected, and that is typically true. If you want, select "Scaled" and 1920x1080, plus a frequency from the list (where higher is usually better, but just pick the one that works best for you). If you can't see a change to the better, you best go back to "Best for display".
    - If you are not happy with the colors on your screen, you'll find eventually more than one choice in the Color tab, though your particular screen should be in the list and its Display Profile should get you the best result. (Double-check picture modes on your display: if you're far off there, you won't make it much better with the Mac's settings).

  • New Posts  All Forums:Forum Nav: samsung-hp-r4252 vga macbook connection resolution problem

    Hi
I've been trying to connect my 2009 white macbook to my samsung-hp-r4252 42 inch through VGA using the miniDVI to VGA converter. Most of the time I get these two resolutions (see picture) -- which are stretched wide on my tv. However, at seemingly random times I get a whole range of differ resolutions high as around 1900x1200. i've tried a different cable, turning the tv on before the macbook/ vise-versa and everything else i could think of, but can't get the wider list of resolutions to appear. One thing to note is that usually, the external display is shown as Samsung PDP, but when i get a wider list of resolutions it's shown as VGA display. Am I just using a faulty cable or is the problem deeper then that?
Any help would really be appreciated

  • Thunderbolt (MDP) to VGA Resolution Problem

    Hi All,
I have a new hengedock for my Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2011 with Thunderbolt, I setup my dock and placed my Macbook into it, every thing worked fine picture came up on my 37" Samsung TV, but I changed the resolution on the TV and now the TV shows "NOT SUPPORTED" when the mac goes into the dock. If i take the Macbook out of the dock and open it up and plug in the VGA cable it mirrors perfect, just when its in clamshell mode that it wont. Its like i need to go back to default display settings as I cannot revert back as the TV wont show the display for me to change it back while in clamshell (Dock).
    Hope someone can help
    Thanks

I am having trouble with the initial connection of the apple tv. I have isolated the problem to the cable/connection. My new hdmi cable has a resolution up to 1080p...does the resolution matter?is this the right hdmi cable for the apple tv?

There are only two types of HDMI cables (standard and high speed - listen to all 1.2, 1.3 etc etc nonsense they will try to tell in the store) both types will work with the Apple TV.
The cable may be faulty though, have you got another to try, what exactly is happening.

  • Different VGA cable = different resolution?

So I ordered a new (cheap) VGA cable and after I hook it up my resolution dropped from 1680x1050 down to 1024x768.  I wasn't using any xorg.conf.d settings before (but it looks like I may have to).  If I load X with the old cable in place, everythings correctly auto-detected and switching in the new cable at that point  gives me the proper resolution so it should be possible to use the new cable at the right resolution after I mess with xorg.conf.
Has anyone run into something like this before?  I thought DDC and auto-detecting fixed this.

well, you need to read your edid and see if your cable is too cheap to actually transmit it without errors.
ive got this issue with my samsung 20" too. but i never replaced the cable. it actually stopped working, i forced it through a modeline and kept on with my life

  • Inserting VGA-cable causes either crash or black screen on my Thinkpad. Help!

On my newly bought W530, inserting a VGA-cable causes either a crash or a black screen on my Thinkpad.
The above happens every time I insert the VGA-cable which is quite annoying since I use it with my projector every day.
The crashes seems to happen mostly when I have the lid closed and insert the VGA-cable. If I have the lid open I mostly get a black screen (which remains black even when I pull out the cable again).
What could I try in order to fix this?
What driver (or other) would be the most likely cause?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks Adam! :-)
Yes, like I mentioned, the crashes disappeared after installing the latest driver from Nvidias own site.
The remaining troubles are minor glitches which I can live with until NVidia hopefully fixes them with an updated driver.
But it is was really great to see instructions on how to boot into Safe-mode on Windows 8. I've always wondered that. Thanks again Adam! :-)
