VGA Connection - help

When I plug in my macbook to my DLP TV (via Mini-DVI to VGA) I only get the background, I can't see the dock or the menu at the top. Is this all I should see? Please help.
Thanks,

Sounds like you have your display preferences set to extended desk top. Nothing will be there until you drag something there. Push F7 and it will switch it back and forth to mirrored or extended. Look under display inpreferences and you can choose which side you want the display to be on.

  • 23" Cinema Display and VGA connection ??

    Hey all,
I have a VAIO S580 notebook and a 23" Apple Cinema Display. The VAIO uses a VGA connection to connect to external monitors. I have been looking for VGA to DVI adapters that would allow me connect my VAIO to my ACD. However, I could only find adapters that are DVI-I and DVI-A thus far. Will these adapters work for my setup?
    TIA

Monoprice.com is another good site. I have a question for everyone. I have a Powermac G4 and 21" cinema display. I recently connected the computer to a tv via a DVI to HDMI cable. It worked fine for a few days. Now when I restart the screen freezes without a toolbar at the top of the screen or the dock. If I unplug the cable the screen goes blank for a second and both the toolbar and dock appear. Can someone help with this?

  • What's a DVI-to-VGA connection have to do with sleep?

I've been experimenting with hooking my HDTV to my Mac Pro's 5870 video card. Currently I have my 27" ACD connected to one of the mini displayports (mDP) and a VGA, connected through an Apple VGA-to-mDP (active) adapter to the other mDP. When I want to use the TV I can connect the HDTV to the 5870's DVI connection with a (passive) HDMI-to-DVI adapter. It works. Indeed it works too well! Whether the TV is taking input from the computer or not the computer thinks the TV is a third monitor which can get very confusing when the mouse is accidentally moved off my ACD on to the TV (6 feet away) and I can't find the cursor. Another minor nit is that using the DVI means no audio can be passed on the HDMI so the computer speakers are used unless of course I hook up a separate audio connection.
I could get around the 3-monitor problem using SwitchResX but I prefer not to. I'm willing to simply manually connect and disconnect the HDMI cable on those few times I want stream stuff to the TV. But as an alternative I tried switching the TV and VGA connections, i.e., connect the TV to the mDP through a (passive) mDP-to-HDMI adapter and the VGA through a (passive) VGA-to-DVI adapter.
This second scheme also works. However because all the adapters are now passive the VGA will disconnect when the HDMI is plugged in. Ok. I can live with that and I understand the behavior due to the 3-monitor limitations of the 5xxx cards (i.e., active adapters required).
All the above was just background and context leading to the question I entitled this post with. Forget the HDMI connection. I have the ACD connected to its mDP and the VGA through the passive VGA-to-DVI adapter (i.e., the second scheme I described above). With this configuration my machine will not sleep on its own (i.e., at the time the energy saver specifies). I can "manually" put it to sleep ("Sleep" from the Apple menu). It just won't do it on its own (and none of the checkboxes in energy saver are checked -- wake for network for example -- and no active processes are running that would explain this behavior either).
Experimentation has shown that it is somehow related to using the VGA through the DVI. If I put my original configuration back (VGA-to-mDP) the machine will sleep on its own at the designated energy saver preference time.
What I don't understand is what's a DVI connection have to do with the energy saver sleep setting? The only remote possibility I can think of is perhaps the screen saver is running on both the VGA and ACD and an active VGA is sufficient to make the machine think there's activity when connected through the DVI (but not when connected through the mDP).
Of course none of this is really a serious problem. I'm only asking for academic interest.

I know I can do that but that's not the subject of this thread! I'm only asking why would a VGA connection to DVI keeps the computer from sleeping on its own.
And, oh, by the way, another audio alternative is something like this,
    http://www.gefen.com/gefentv/gtvproduct.jsp?prod_id=5279
although this requires stringing a separate audio cable.

  • My MBP Retina doesn't allow the use of two Thunderbolt to DVI adapters. It only works with one TB - VGA adapter and one TB - DVI adapter. However now the color on the VGA connected monitor is slightly different.

The monitors are Viewsonic VA2406m-LED. The Display preferences show all three monitors but one monitor always says "No Signal" if they are both connected TB -> DVI.
The Color on the VGA connected one is slighly off. It seems like I should be able to connect two DVI monitors not sure why this is stopped. Does it have something to do with the Graphics card?

The problem was with the newEgg adapter. I just went to the Apple Store and bought an Apple adapter and the monitor now displays correctly.
For future reference, in case anyone experiences this problem:
the newEgg adapter is part number 9SIA1PU0P88920, described as a Thunderbolt Mini Displayporrt Display Port DP to DVI Adapter for APPLE Macbook Pro Air and the full description says it works for macbook pro, etc.
when this adapter is used, the macbook pro recognizes the monitor, but the monitor displays nothing.
When the apple adapter (MB507Z/B Mini Display Port to DVI Adapater) is used, the monitor displays correctly.
Of course, the individual newEgg part might simply be defective, but I doubt it.  moral -- spend the extra $$ and buy the Apple adapter.

  • Using Keynote with USB Vga connection

I'm trying a new setup for two projectors, where I'm hooking up one using a mini displayport on an imac, connecting it via DVI, and a second one through a USB VGA connection. Previously, we were using a VGA splitter off the displayport, which kept me from having a digital connection for the one (better) projector.
This setup seems to work fine except in Keynote. I have the two projectors setup to mirror each other, while the imac serves as the main display. In other programs, the mirroring works, but in Keynote, when I activate the slide presentation, the VGA projector goes black. To my untrained eye, it appears as if Keynote is overriding the OS' display setup, and is only using the display port's connection as the secondary display.
Hope I'm explaining this well enough. Anyone have any suggestions?

In my experience, most current business projectors will display at 1024 X 768, although older/cheaper models may have a native resolution of 800 X 600. Most projectors can rescale some higher resolutions, but I'd say that you're safest to not go above 1024 X 768. Also, although some projectors will have digital inputs, many business projectors will not, and so it is vital to have the VGA connector. While you may lose a bit of quality, in the cases where you need it, you won't likely have any other option.

  • Both xp and windows 7 have video problems with my VGA connection using TV

both xp and windows 7 have video problems with my VGA connection using TV as my monitor when it gets to starting up windows no matter what version it will not I have let my mac on all night and still says starting windows or the windows 7 logo and nothing else will happen also when I use a 3rd patty software like peraills or other it works like a charm how to fix it?

To map the drive on your computer click on Start - RUN - type "\\192.168.1.1" and click ok... When prompted for Username and Password type "admin" and click ok... Now you will be able to see the folder which you have shared on  your router, right click on it and select "Map network drive" and click on finish.
Now it will map the drive on your computer and you should be able to transfer the file from your computer to the USB drive.

  • ITunes visualizer problem with RGB (VGA) connection to plasma tv

when i use my vga connection on my laptop to my plasma tv and use itunes, for some reason i cannot get the visualizer to work. it just goes black for a split second and then just back to itunes screen. any idea why that would be? the visualizer works fine when not connected via VGA.

  • Thunderbolt vga connection fuzzy macbook pro

recently purchased a thunderbolt connection because hdmi to vga connection doesn't work on macbook pro. had to punt and go to thurnderbolt connection for vga and the result is....blurry picture on mirrored display. running latest version of maverick.

What you've asked is true.  You can buy similar displays from Dell or other manufacturers that will work with your laptop.  Many of the Dell's use the same internal LG panels, so quality is similar.

  • DVI or VGA Connection For Sharp Aquos??

I've got an older Sharp Aquos, specifically the LC37G4U. Previously owned a Mini G4, 1.42 GHZ. The best I could do imagewise was with a DVI connection and the Aquos and Mini set to 1280 x 768. This resulted in an image cropping of approximately 1/2 inch on the right and left sides of the screen. I lived with it for a few years. I recently upgraded with a sweet Mini Duo Core 1.83 GHZ, 2 Gig of RAM, 7,500 RPM Seagate HD, etc. The computer is great, but with the DVI connection, it appears to default to the old 1280 x 768 setting, with the same exact image cropping. The maximum resolution on the LCD is 1366 X 768, and I'd like to attempt to do better as far as the cropping goes. Has anyone out there tried the VGA connection alternative? Or if anyone has any ideas, I would be forever in your debt. Thanks All!
Mac MIni Duo Core 1.83Ghz, 2 gig, etc.   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have a sharp lcd tv as well, and as far as I know, if you connect the mini to it using DVI (you shouldn't really use anything else) the mini will default to the tv's resolution. I swap my mini from monitor to tele depending on what I'm using it for, and everytime it automatically fixes it's display settings to match whatever is connected to it. Hopefully this is the case for you too, try it out.

  • Detect HDMI or VGA connection

    Dear forum members,
Out of some reasons, I want that one of my LabVIEW programs runs only if the laptop is connected to my audio and video system via HDMI. The program shall give a warning or similar if the laptop is connected to the audio and video system via VGA.
So, is there any way how I can detect if the laptop is connected via HDMI or VGA?
I would be happy about some feedback!

Thanks a lot for the feedback!
The idea is great. Unfortunately, I have different laptops which behave differently.
One changes the display size the other not id I connect them to the HDMI wire.
So, I cannot really use the All Monitors Application for detecting if there is a HDMI or VGA connection.
Meanwhile, I also think that I will build in my program some dialog in - this is easy and will work for sure.
    Anyway, Thanks a lot - I learned something ;-)

hi, my iphone 4s is saying im not connected to the internet, my wifi is on and ive tried switching it off and on and nothing, still cant connect. help! it was working perfectly fine earlier today.

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
