VGA display "out of range"

I searched through the postings, and didn't see anything quite like this. I have a new Mini Core 2 duo and an old Kogi VGA 1280x1024 @60htz monitor. The monitor works fine with my iBook G4, and worked fine with my son's Quicksilver dual 867. When I boot the Mini, I get the normal grey screen (though a very magnified version), and then a message "out of range H 53.8 V 85.3."
I tried to find an adjustment on the monitor that would effect some change, but there is nothing. I tried booting the mini in target mode from the iBook to see if I could boot the iBook from the Mini and change the resolution. Obviously, that was a stretch and didn't work. I have never booted this Mini before, and I do not have another monitor to try. suggestions?
Thanks!

Try booting the mini in Safe mode again. Not from the CD but rather from the hard drive. Assuming you get a useable screen, go into Displays preferences and select the correct resolution (1280 x 1024 at 60Hz). Then restart the mini normally. Hopefully the setting of 1280 x 1024 will persist through the restart.
In Displays preferences, how is the monitor identifed? Does it have a generic identifier or is it identified by name/model?

  • VGA resolution out of range

Complete novice at this have just got myself a Mini tring to use it as a media center with a Sony Bravia KDL S40A12U. Have read about the problems using the two together and tried an app called DisplayconfigX. Tweaked the resolution and installed restarted the Mac blank screen and the message out of range from the TV. Luckly I can still use the DVI/HDMI connection and can use the Mini but how do I reset the VGA output.

I have same problem but reverse, VGA works but DVI/HDMI did not work. Even when I see it display well in safe mode, but goes blank after reboot thru HDMI.
I have installed SwitchresX but have uninstalled, doesn't help at all.
How to reset the display to default on DVI/HDMI?

  • VGA monitor out of range error

    Hello all,
I'm putting together a new computer with an oldish VGA only monitor. I used the latest installation disk. Installation went fine. I then did pacman -Syu of course. After that, whenever I boot my computer, it boots the kernel and shortly afterwards (before the login prompt) cause the monitor to go "out of range". I've tested the monitor with a Windows laptop and it seems fine. My question is: why did the VGA mode change during boot? How do I avoid that? If I can get a prompt and install X it'll be one step anyway. Thanks,

  • Display out of range

I have an old G4 running 10.3.9. I am trying to upgrade to 10.4. When I put the install disk in and restart the only thing I get on my monitor is an "out of range" message on the display. The monitor is a Princeton. Not exactly sure what the model is. I have the resolution set to 1280x1024. I tried changing the resolution but that didn't help.

  • Mega 180 VGA Video Out Of Range

    Hello all.
I recently received a Mega 180 (used, but not too used).  It had an ATI AGP card in it that I pulled out.  I then installed Win XP Pro (SP2 and other up to date MS stuff).
It was working fine for a few days ... I have a KVM switch and plugs attached to it, with the VGA cable into the primary VGA slot.  Now I can't get any video output.  My LCDs (attached to the KVM, and directly to the Mega180) say that "video out of range".  I've connected a CRT to it but it's not getting a video signal after the MS XP Pro initial screen.
I've gone into the BIOS and reset it to the "optimal defaults" but no luck there either.
    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
    ESlater

Bass:  Are you sure it's the F6 key that allows one to reset to VGA mode?  I've gone into CMOS and turned off Quick Boot, but still, everytime I press F6 I just get the Windows options for Safe Mode boot.
I did go into Safe Mode and set my resolution to 800x600 but that still didn't help.
I guess I can always go ahead and re-install the ATI AGP but I was thinking this unit should work with the standard VGA plug.  What is weird is that Windows was running fine, and I wasn't really using the machine at all when the video mode got "reset" (or something).
I guess I'll boot into Safe Mode and remove all video drivers and see how that goes?
Otro: I thought that by hooking up the CRT I'd be able to capture all video modes (certainly more than w/the LCD).  What's happening is that the CRT is turning "off" once Windows moves beyond the initial screen (presumably to the User Account Login Screen), as if the Mega 180 isn't even sending a signal down the VGA connection.

  • Asus vh232h out of range, Mac mini thunderbolt to vga

    Hey guys,
Pretty much what the title says.....
    Mac mini
Asus vh232h (VGA only, no dvi socket)
    Thunderbolt to VGA adapter
    VGA cable (I've tried several)
(Benq monitor running fine on the hdmi port)
In short, if I use a VGA cable under 1.8m, there's no problem.
If I use a cable of 3m in length, or two x 1.8m cables, I get a "Out of range" message on the monitor.
(My office is shared space, so I need the Mac mini to be inside a lockable cupboard.  That means I need a cable longer than 1.8m)
FYI, I don't seem to be able to set the asus monitor resolution in Mac settings (not sure if it can be done when monitor is 'out of range', but I can see the Asus in Display settings, Arrangement. It looks about half the width and height of the benq.
Is a monitor supposed to connect successfully over a 3 m cable?
Will a thunderbolt to dvi adapter work? (Would have to buy new monitor)
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Darren

Bought a new benq 24" monitor, moshi mini display port to hdmi adapter, and 5m hdmi cable.
    Sorted.
Must be an issue with apple mdp to VGA adapter when using VGA cables over 1.8m long.

  • Input signal out of range with HDMI to VGA adapter LE1901w

    Hi!
Recently I acquired an LE1901w monitor to use as second screen. I'm trying to connect it to my Toshiba u925 using an HDMI to VGA adapter (because neither the monitor has a HDMI port nor the notebook has a VGA output).
I'm getting the message "input signal out of range" asking to change to 1440x920 @ 60Hz and it keeps showing until the monitor goes to sleep even when I change the settings as per requested.
I have an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 and i'm using the default Windows monitor drivers for Windows 8.1
    Any comment will be helpful
    Thanks

    Hello @fbinim,
I understand that you are getting the message "Input Signal Out Of Range" and it is asking you to change to 1440x920 @ 60 Hz. I suspect this is a driver issue and you will need to ensure that your drivers are up to date on your computer. Just to be sure I would recommend if you could to move the HP LE1901W monitor to another computer and ensure that you do not have the problem there. If you do have it on another computer The issue you are experiencing appears to be a physical issue. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • External Display Problem - Frequency out of range with lid closed

I have read this - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286 - it should work, but it does not.
I have a black macbook, an apple usb keyboard, a usb mouse and a19" gateway lcd display (max resolution 1440x900). Everything used to work great. Now for some reason no matter what resolution & mhz I set the external display and the macbook to it will not work with the lid closed, I can set bot to the lowest settings (640 x 480) and when I close the lid and wake the mac the message on the external display says "Frequency out of range." I will work fin in either mirror or extended mode with the lid open. Any suggestions? I've tried resetting the pram already and run the disk repair on the start up disk.

I never did figure it out - but the problem has been solved..
I did tried to trash a bunch of preference files - no joy.
I fixed it the old fashioned way - I installed a fresh system (don't waste your time with an archive and install - it just imported the corrupt files). Works fine now..

  • My LG monitor says the display is out of range.

My LG W2040T Flatron monitor says the D-Sub is out of range. No matter what I do in the settings will change this issue. My Macbook Pro is the new version with Thunder Bolt. I never had this problem with my old black macbook. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it? Thanks for you help in advance.
    -Paul

If you have the two displays "Mirrored" (which is usually the default) it will use a resolution that is closest to a resolution that both displays can handle. But sometimes it misses, and one or both displays are left "out of range". If you set "Extended desktop" instead, you can set each display's resolution separately.
    System Preferences > Displays > ( Arrange )
... if the Icons for the two screens are one on top of the other, that is Mirrored. Drag one off and arrange them to correspond to their positions in space. Now you have Extended Desktop.

  • Macs Won't Forget Refresh Rate - LCD Refresh Out of Range

I have a new Viewsonic LCD for an old G4. I had to use an ADC to DVI adapter.
The first time I booted up my Mac, the monitor worked fine. I went into the Display Preferences and, like an idiot, I selected 90 hz because, like an idiot, I thought 90 hz was better than 60 hz.
My screen went black and the monitor said "Frequency out of range", etc. I have talked to AppleCare and I have tried everything and nothing I do gets this Mac to revert to 60 hz at 1280 x 1024.
    Tried zapping PRAM, didn't work.
Tried booting into Safe Mode and selecting another resolution. I do that, reboot, it reboots in that lower resolution. I select 1280 x 1024 and my screen goes black because it's going into that 90 hz.
    Created another account, didn't work.
I plugged in my old CRT into the VGA port. I was able to select 1280 x 1024 at 60 hz. Turned off the Mac. Plugged in the LCD. Turned the Mac back on and it went black.
It does this when you log in. The actual bootup is in 1280 x 1024 60 hz. I get the login screen fine. It's when I log in, into any account, it goes back to that 90 hz mode.
In Windows, if you select a resolution or refresh rate, a dialog comes up asking you if this mode is OK and if after 15 seconds you don't click on anything, it reverts back to the original resolution. Apple doesn't want to do that, I guess, because they want me to use their monitors.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You should probably just trash the preferences file(s). That will give you a fresh start with the Viewsonic. See this thread:

  • Xen Kernel randomly fails to load and goes out of range

Been having an on/off issue lately that requires a hard reset of my system.  Essentially what happens is the system begins to load when my monitor reports an error that the signal is out of range.  I try to pretend login and reboot, but it does not work.  Instead, I am forced to simply reset the system and once reset it appears to boot OK without any issues.  In fact I can go a few reboots before once again it decides to break.  Below is what should be one of the logs from a failed boot, in fact, the system is in this same failed state right now as well.

  • "Out of Range"

I just got a new mac mini (1.83ghz, 1g memory, and 120gb hard drive). Previously I had a PC and still have the monitor (evov 17" lcd display). I hooked up the mac mini when I got it and turned the mac mini on and the monitor. All the monitor displayed was the message; "out of range" vga in: 1024x768 H. SYNC :+68.5 V SYNC :+84.7 Clock: 114.00 MHZ. On my PC I checked out the display setting and tried messing around with that and prey I could use my new mac.Of course, nothing worked and the same message still persist on a blank screen. I noticed when I was messing around with the display setting on my PC that it mentioned that the monitor could not display a screen refresh rate of 85hertz but only 60 or 75hertz. I am not sure but I think that that may have something to do with my problem.
I figured that if i could some how without using the monitor (because I can't anyway) turn on the mac mini and go to system preferences and go to display and change the screen's resolution. I don't think there is a keyboard command code for this procedure, but I may be wrong. I could just wait a month because that is when I will be getting a 27" LCD HDTV but I want to use my mac mini know!Wouldn't you I you got a brand new one??
If you happen to have any solutions PLEASE HELP ME I want to use my brand new mac mini!

You might try starting up in Safe Mode. Basically, after you hear the bong sound when you start the mini, immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see a gray screen with a little spinny wheel gear looking thing. At that point you can let go of the Shift key. The Mac will finishing booting into Safe Mode.
In Safe Mode the Mac uses a lower, generic type resolution that almost any monitor should handle. Once you have booted into OS X. You can go under the blue apple at the top left and find System Preferences. Within System Preferences you will find a Display icon and if you click on that it will let you set options for your display. Try setting to 1280 x 1024 and 60 Hz refresh. Hopefully that will result in a useable screen and hopefully when you restart the Mac normally (without holding down the shift key) the newly chosen resolution will stick. Good luck.

  • Snow Leopard killed my vga displays!!

This is by far the most weird problem I have ever encountered after upgrading to a new OS.
I run a company where we have something like 15 different Macs. Mostly Intel, but different ages, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, iMacs, Mac Mini etc.
A couple of days ago I wanted to upgrade one of the Mac Pros to Snow Leopard. It's an early 2008 3.1 with ATI hd 2600 graphics. I wanted to do a clean install, but instead of backing up everything from the system drive, I pulled it out and put in a new clean one. This way I could retrieve the data from the old drive when I need it through a USB docking station or something.
Installation went by fast and without any problems what so ever.
But first thing I noticed when the first bootup was completed was that the resolution of my monitors were suddenly completely wrong. I have two Samsung Syncmaster 2343nw monitors connected through vga, and they have always been detected and automatically been set to the correct resolution in the display preferences dialog by the old Leopard. I have around 9 of these monitors working as dual displays on Leopard machines, and a few working as extra external monitors for a couple of Macbook Pros running both Snow Leopard and Leopard. They are all connected via an dvi to vga converter and they always get detected correctly as "Syncmaster" in Display preferences.
But suddenly now, they just show up as "VGA Monitor" in Display preferences.
After fighting with this for a couple of hours trying all the suggested workarounds I could find, zapping PRAM deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist changing the cables and so on, I finaly gave up. Fortunately I didn't overwrite the old Leopard installation so of cause I could just swap the drives back and everything should be dandy after booting back into the old Leopard install.
But **** no! Now the resolution was equally messed up in Leopard! And none of the two monitors were detected as "Syncmaster" in display pref. Now they only show up as "VGA Monitor" as they did in Snow. ***?? How can an OS mess with a monitors plug 'n' play capabilities?
I then tried the obvious which was to try and reset the monitors, remove power from them, Zap the PRAM again. I even tried a different graphics card (that didn't work in this machine) but what ever I did, the monitors where no longer detectable by the OS.
Next step was to take some identical monitors from a different machine. And yes, they where detected by Leopard on the problem machine. Since I couldn't believe that Snow had actually ruined the other two monitors I booted back into Snow hooping that it would now detect these other identical monitors. But no, same problem. Back to Leopard, and once again now suddenly these couldn't be detected by Leopard either.
I have since tried these monitors on all the other Macs I have in the company, and only one machine with an nVidia card is able to detect them correctly as Syncmaster. But none the less also this machine isn't able to see the monitors native resolution thus making it impossible to select the right setting for the monitor.
So now I have 4 monitors that's virtually unusable after being in contact
I have read a lot about people who who suddenly can't use their secondary monitor after upgrading to Snow Leopard and that Apple is aware of this, and that 10.6.4 should address this problem when we finally get some new graphic drivers. But I haven't heard about anybody who's monitor lost it's plug 'n' play capabilities after being in contact with Snow Leopard.
But maybe someone here has had any similar experience? Maybe somebody else has had luck with upgrading a dual vga monitor system to Snow Leopard? I would love to get some ideas on what happened since these monitors doesn't really work anymore on any computer.
    Thanks!

Hmm... I know that the screens native refresh rate is at 60 Hz and the resolution is 2048 x 1152. I'm unable to check it out now but I'm pretty sure I can't select 60Hz. They only have VGA connectors (the same as D-Sub I guess?) And the closest I can get to the right resolution is 1920x 1280 (or maybe it's 1200, not sure) which looks almost right, but then again not, and a whole lot more fuzzy than it used to be.
On some machines the displays are detected as "Display" and on others "VGA monitor" or "VGA display". It's supposed to detect as "Syncmaster". Nothing changes if I press "Detect". I've only tried on machines running 10.5.8, and one brand new iMac running 10.6.3 through a display port to vga converter.
But thanks for link to the toms article. I'll give it a read

  • I can't get my mac mini mid 2011 to connect to a manual vga screen switcher connected to an analogue vga display

    Hey,
I have a mid 2011 mac mini with a dual intel core i5 processor and 8gb of crucial 1333mhz ddr3 ram, running mac os 10.8.3, the latest version of Mountain Lion.
I am trying to use it with an old neqview analog vga screen.  Because I want to use it alongside my old Windows XP PC, I bought a manual vga screen switcher
    off amazon.
The mac mini is working fine on my LG 32'' TV via a simple HDMI to HDMI cable connection.
To see if all the cables were working (Mini DisplayPort ---> VGA in ---> VGA to VGA ---> NeqView Monitor) I disconnected my Windows PC VGA from the VGA port of the NeqView display and plugged in the final VGA socket in the conversion.  I securely fastened the VGA socket in and tried turning on my mac.
The apple startup sound could be heard from the speakers, but , after 3 minutes (usual boot time is about 1min 3secs) it still hadn't displayed on the screen, even though the keyboard was working.
Eventually, after several reboots, I managed to get it to work.  Unfortunately, I accidentally jogged the cable, and the screen went black again.
Now knowing that it COULD work, I took my manual VGA screen switcher and plugged the end of the VGA to VGA cable into that.  I then plugged the screen switcher into the NeqView monitor and I also plugged the Windows XP computer into the second slot for the screen switcher.  When I clicked on the appropriate letter for the Windows computer it booted up fine, however, even after at least 6 retries, turning on and off electricity, trying to download drivers, etc. the mac simply would not work.  I have securely fastened, double and triple checked, all the cables, however it will not work.
I know that both the screen switcher and the display are working because they both worked together with the windows XP computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, the sooner the better.
    Sorry for the long post.
    Thanks in advance.
