VGA display powered off
iMac in classroom, with VGA display connected for occaisional use. When I open a new finder window it opens on this 'second display' which is not on, and thus invisible to me. I want the window to appear on the iMac desktop, but it uses the external display. So my options are power on the display, wait for it to come on, then turn around behind me and drag the window back to the imac desktop, or to physically unplug the display.
Is there a way to gather all app windows onto the imac desktop in one fell swoop? Seems a simple UI task, but I can't discover it.
I would use the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adapter and then get a DVIU to HDMI cable from a local retailer. They are also available online from a ton of places - and probably at a lot lower price.
There really is no need to involve VGA when you would need another adapter to go from VGA to DVI, then the cable to go from DVI to HDMI. I would take that adapter to your local Apple Store and see if they would do an exchange for you.

Second Display Powers Off Periodically
Hello everyone,
I can't find anyone with quite the same problem as me, so assistance would be appreciated. I run my macbook periodically hooked up to a second monitor. This works fine except that after a while (10 mins or so) the second monitor flicks off, and remains off. It's still got power, the macbook is apparently still feeding it data (my windows don't whiz back onto my main screen), but it's gone blank. If I switch the monitor off and on again, it comes back up. Recently it will then flick off again immediately. The solution appears to be to wait a few minutes, and then switch it off/on.
It sounds like something is overheating perhaps, but I'm baffled to know what. Any thoughts?
Many thanks for any ideas you might have.Hmm. That's odd. I would suggest something in the Energy Saver control panel but there isn't an option for turning off on a per-display basis.
Have you tried another monitor to see if it has the same problem? If not, it may the actual display that is the problem and nothing wrong with your Macbook. -
T500 - Intel 82567 network disconnets when powering off the display
Hello! I'm having the problem that when the display powers off, my network connection drops, and then reconnects again at 10mps (when the screen is still powered off) When the screen gets powered on again (e.g. by using the mouse), the networkcard disconnects again and reconnects at 100mbps. This seems to be some sort of power-saving function, but its rather annoying and seems useless. Is there a way to disable this? Thanks for your help Dieter
Is this click coming from your speakers, whether the built-ins or attached? I ask because most of us seem to get a click or pop when the Mac wakes from sleep, etc. Isn't all that loud on my system and doesn't bother me, but some folks really dislike it and have mentioned it (read moaned & complained) extensively in the past. Seems like maybe the sound chip or something 1st powering up.

Macbook Air Immediately powers off when mini display to VGA cable plugged in.
I have a late 2010 MBA 11 inch. I am runnig OSX Snow Leopard, all software and firmware up to date as of 08/10/2011.
I am trying to use my mini display port to VGA cable to run an Optoma PK301 projector. Every time I plug in my mini display to VGA cable, the machine immediately powers off. No shutdown screen, no other warning signs, just instant black, as if the power was just immediately disconnected.
I have tried plugging in the cable while the projector is plugged in and with the projector unplugged. Either way the result is the same. I have been able to start the computer with the adapter plugged in and it will power on, however the projector will no pick up any signal from my MBA.
Anybody have any ideas on this? I have a genius bar appointment this afternoon. It is just frustrating because I am so used to everything "just working."
Any help is appreciated.
TEHi and welcome to Discussions,
it's avaiable in the US Apple Online Store http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjkyNjI0MA
Not sure how to get it to china though.

Mini sleeps when display/TV powered off, even though apps are runnning
I have a new Mini (Late 2012) running 10.8.3, it is connected to a Samsung TV running Elgato EyeTV(HDHomeRun), as an HTPC.
When we switch to another input on the TV or power off the TV, the Mini sleeps, even though I have all the Energy settings to Never!
This box has our recording schedule and must be on 24/7 wether the Display is on or not.
I have sent crash reports from EyeTV to Apple related to the problem but have not seen any updates.
I've tried connecting the display from the HDMI and TB/Display port with the same results.
Mini Specs: Late 2012, Macmini6,2, 16Gb Ram, 2.6GHz i7, 1TB disk
I've waded through all the discussions and haven't seen any solutions/recommendations that I haven't already tried.
Is there a way to tell the Mini not to sleep when the display is diconnected or powered off?Hi, no idea what you tried, but...
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the Wakeup/Startup right after that for clues. -
My iPhone 3GS keeps powering off at any point when between 5 and 50% battery remains.
I could be in the middle of texting, receiving a call or using an app when all of a sudden the screen goes black and very faint randomly distributed lines are visible from the top of the screen to the bottom. The display looks a little like a barcode. I am then unable to restart the phone without plugging it into a power supply. I've looked on the Internet and cannot find a similair case.
It is so frustrating and I am continually thinking it will crash at any point.
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
ThanksWhen the "white symbol" is the white Apple logo, it is starting up....
Can take some time. -
TS1367 grey screen displayed at startup then powers off
When I turn on my Mac a grey loading screen is displayed but then it powers off. I want to turn it on or figure out a way to bypass this without losing anything saved on the computer.
Hey taylorkl,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the Mac is not fully starting up. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie into Quicktime, saved to desktop. System started saving INDIVIDUAL frames instead and entire system froze. Powered off and on twice - screensaver appears, but that's it - nothing else is accessible
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then reboot as usual. -
Imac does not detect external vga display
Please help with connecting external vga display to an imac 21.5'', late 2012, OS X 10.8.5 via Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter.
I have connected an external monitor (Fujitsu Siemens) to the thunderbolt port of the imac using a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. The imac does not detect the external monitor. I have followed all instructions and suggestions I could find at Apple Support Communities without success.
The monitor is in perfectly good working order as it has no problem connecting and performing flawlessly with a dell windows laptop. The imac, connected via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter to the D-Sub connector of a Samsung smart TV, also worked perfectly.
To add insult to injury, occasionally, when restarting the iMac with the external vga display connected and powered on, the iMac screen starts intermittently turning blue for a brief second or so and resuming back to normal. The frequency of 'blueing' is once in 2-3 seconds. This particular rather disturbing problem, luckily ceases when the external display is switched off.
Any advice and help with resolving the above connection problems will be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you
ghogohI am having the same issue. Hope Apple can fix this soon!!!

Machine A will hang if Machine B is powered off.
I use Solaris 8. If some applications (for example, telnet) on machine A attempt to connect to the the machine B, which is powered off, or removed from the network, the telnet on machine A will just hang for a long time (many minutes). Eventually, some exeptions will occur. But I believe there are some parameters at the OS level which could make the hang time shorter, say 3 seconds. Do you know what parameters could serve that purpose?
This problem can also be observed when a JDBC application is used. Basically the JDBC (client) simply relies on the OS signal when the database (server) is powered off.
Thanks.I have a T410s with 2 external monitors that I always used. 1x24inch LCD connected using VGA to VGA and 1x26inch LCD connected using displayport to HDMI. It used to be fine until some intel grapics driver update a while back.
So I come to believe is the driver fault and/or the internal graphic card lack of capacity.
My solution is to setup the monitors the way I like is to change the BIOS to boot up from displayport, and when successful going into the desktop then disable the laptop LCD. Then connect the 2nd LCD, extend the desktop and setup the resolution. From that point on I must always boot up with VGA disconnect then after into desktop, plug in the VGA cable and it will show up fine. If I forget and left the displayport + VGA connected when I bootup, it will fail and I have to do the initial setup again.
So something with the displayport/graphic card/graphic memory is making the T410s 'forget' or discard the displayport. or the 1900x1200 resolutions of 2x monitors overwhelm the graphics card memory and it had to made a choice or give up. Most of the time it just goes blank or flash on/off
In your case, if you only have 1x external monitor you can just change the BIOS to bootup screen in VGA/Displayport/Dock and when in the dsektop, set to duplicate mode for both screens. Then download this utility called ultramon and use it to setup the extended display setting to your liking, save the profile on the desktop/startup folder. When your T410s bootup, intel driver will boot in duplicate mode so it will go into the desktop, once it's there, the ultramon will takes over and change it to the extended setup. Play with the sequence/settings a bit to see which ones works for your setup....and hope lenovo comes up with better drivers. -
When i disconnect my iPod 2nd Gen from my laptop, its display goes off and working freezes. Please help me.
The computer freezes? There may be something wrong with the USB port. If the laptop has more than one port, does this happen on any port? If you are disconnecting the shuffle cable from the computer, does it make any difference if you disconnect the shuffle at the other end of the cable first, then disconnect the cable from computer? Or if you currently disconnect the shuffle from cable first, try it the other way.
You may be able to work around this problem, if you get a self-powered USB hub. Something like this one
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
There are many choices, but be sure to get one that has its own power supply. You can leave the shuffle cable connected to the hub, and connect the shuffle to the hub, instead of directly to the computer. This may provide a "buffer" for whatever is causing your laptop to shut off when the shuffle is disconnected. Since the hub has its own power supply, it will not rely on the computer for power to re-charge the battery. -
Hey,
I have a mid 2011 mac mini with a dual intel core i5 processor and 8gb of crucial 1333mhz ddr3 ram, running mac os 10.8.3, the latest version of Mountain Lion.
I am trying to use it with an old neqview analog vga screen. Because I want to use it alongside my old Windows XP PC, I bought a manual vga screen switcher
off amazon.
The mac mini is working fine on my LG 32'' TV via a simple HDMI to HDMI cable connection.
To see if all the cables were working (Mini DisplayPort ---> VGA in ---> VGA to VGA ---> NeqView Monitor) I disconnected my Windows PC VGA from the VGA port of the NeqView display and plugged in the final VGA socket in the conversion. I securely fastened the VGA socket in and tried turning on my mac.
The apple startup sound could be heard from the speakers, but , after 3 minutes (usual boot time is about 1min 3secs) it still hadn't displayed on the screen, even though the keyboard was working.
Eventually, after several reboots, I managed to get it to work. Unfortunately, I accidentally jogged the cable, and the screen went black again.
Now knowing that it COULD work, I took my manual VGA screen switcher and plugged the end of the VGA to VGA cable into that. I then plugged the screen switcher into the NeqView monitor and I also plugged the Windows XP computer into the second slot for the screen switcher. When I clicked on the appropriate letter for the Windows computer it booted up fine, however, even after at least 6 retries, turning on and off electricity, trying to download drivers, etc. the mac simply would not work. I have securely fastened, double and triple checked, all the cables, however it will not work.
I know that both the screen switcher and the display are working because they both worked together with the windows XP computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, the sooner the better.
Sorry for the long post.

Messages from iPad not Synching with MacBook Pro when Powered Off
I have the new MacBook Pro (2 GHz, i7, purchased Feb 2014), 15" Retina running OSX 10.9.4. I also had an iPad3 (Retina) but just upgraded to the new iPad Air 2 weeks ago. I do not have an iPhone, but that's next. I have used the same iCloud account for all devices.
The issue:
Messages (or message conversations) that I have when using my iPad Air are not synching with the MacBook under certain conditions.
1) If my MacBook is on, there is no issue. Messages between devices (whether being composed on the iPad or MacBook) synch instantly between devices.
2) If my MacBook is sleeping, most (but I do not think all) messages sent from my iPad will synch with the MacBook when it wakes up from sleep.
3) If my MacBook was powered off and I had message conversations using my iPad while the MacBook was off, these messages do not synch with my MacBook after I turn it back on. BUT, this depends:
a) if I power on the MacBook shortly after (5-10 min) I had the message conversation on the iPad, sometimes these messages on the iPad will synch with my MacBook after I power it on.
b) If my MacBook was powered off for several hours after I had a message conversation on my iPad, and then I power on the MacBook, these conversations are not synching on the MacBook at all.
i.e Assume MacBook is powered off. I have a message conversation on my iPad at 4:30 PM. If I power on my MacBook at 4:35 PM, the message from my iPad synchs with the MacBook. However, if I power on my MacBook say at 10 PM or the next day, then the message conversation I had on the iPad DOES NOT synch with my MacBook.
Confused? So am I. To complicate matters, I did not have these issues while I had my old iPad 3. I only starting noticing it when I bought the new iPad Air two weeks ago. I do not know if this is related.
Another issue: SOME message conversations on my MacBook and iPad air now appear to get out of chronological order. In fact, on my iPad air, I received a message at 10 AM (message A) and then had several other messages with this person throughout the day on my iPad (at 11 AM, and then 2 PM). Later that evening around 10 PM, the original message (message A) was received again as a new message on my iPad (i.e. received a new message notification). Now, message A appears out of order (it shows the timestamp of 10 AM, but it displays after the messages that came at 11 AM and 2 PM). Since my MacBook was on, these messages synched with my MacBook, but were (and remain) in the proper chronological order.
Other iCloud apps (calendar, mail, FaceTime notifications, notes, keychain, Photo-stream etc. seem to be synching fine between devices). One last observation, when I bought the iPad air and restored it from the backup I made from the old iPad 3, everything restored fine from the backup except for Calendar. For whatever reason, some old calendar entries did not restore on the new iPad.
I have run a myriad of tests (sending messages to myself from both my new and old iPad (even created a new apple ID from the old iPad)) with my MacBook sleeping or powered off for varying amounts of time in order to provide the information above. I also reinstalled the operating system on my MacBook but this did not resolve the issue.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would be extremely grateful. I have been in contact by phone with Apple support and have them baffled as well, but they are doing their best to help.
Thanks,
HankSTL

PC Powers off when downloading through iTunes
This is totally weird, and 100% replicatable.
I initially discovered this when I got support to help me recover some lost music. It showed up in my downloads section. It started to download, then instantly my PC is powered off.
No blue screen, no error of any kind. One second, happy iTunes progress bars, the next second, powered off. This is a Laptop in a dock using AC power, so it's bypassing battery power too. It just clicks and is powered off.
I reinstalled iTunes and was able to download everything. I assumed the issue was resolved until I bought something new and it happened again during the initial download of that new album. Now it's happening everytime I try to download, new or recovered purchases. I've yet to be able to download the last album I paid for.
Help?I initially discovered this when I got support to help me recover some lost music. It showed up in my downloads section. It started to download, then instantly my PC is powered off.
Since you're getting that when doing Store stuff, if you've got a Radeon-based display adaptor or video card, I'd try updating your video drivers as per:
