VGA hdmi converter

I had a TV that doesn't have a hdmi port. But does have VGA. I was going to get a converter, but is there a standard or type I should get?
When I first got my Apple TV I had a hdmi cable I used for my xbox, but it wouldn't run the Apple TV, so I had to get a gold plated HDMI. No issue since. That's why I am wondering about a certain standard for the converter.
Should it be hdmi to VGA or vice versa?
Any input would be great...

Will not work well
First of all vga is dont carry audio.
Second vga does not support drm hdcp which is required for all appletv media apart from your home movie stuff

  • My connection via hdmi to my TV is no longer working. Even if I use a thunderbolt to hdmi converter

Hi, the day before yesterday I turned on my tv which was connected via HDMI out on the mac mini to HDMI in on my TV. Everything was working fine, however I have been trying to set up dual monitoring on another monitor using an HDMI to VGA adapter to my second monitor but nothing was working. I was about to watch a film from the mac to the TV wen I thought it might be the resolution on the hdmi out why it wasn't working on the monitor but was on the TV so I changed the settings and the hdmi to the TV cut out. My main monitor is connected by thunderbolt to VGA adapter and works fine. I can change all the settings for screen resolution on the main monitor and have tried every setting on it then unplugging and plugging in the hdmi cable from the mac to the TV. I get the blue flash on the screen so I know it is being detected but here is where it gets weird.
I figured I would try the thunderbolt to HDMI converter I originally bought for my iMac and again the blue screen flashes up but there is no blue flash or any sort of detection on the TV.
The whole time there is nothing showing up on the screen, even when I unplug my main display from thunderbolt to VGA (the main monitor) and connect the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and plug in the hdmi to the TV.
I know it's not the hdmi cable as I have tested it on my youview box to my tv and it worked fine.
I also know its not the tv as iv connected my friends windows laptop to the TV using the same cable so it must be the settings on the mac.
I have tried doing a time machine restore to the day I bought it and have had no problems so far until I changed the settings. Why oh why did I mess about with it!!
If anyone can help please let me know ASAP.
It doesn't show up the HDMI output in audio anymore either, however like I say it flashes blue wen I connect the hdmi but seems to have no idea that the HDMI is connected in the display settings! It's so frustrating. I'm going to call the mac support today but if anyone on here hash as any similar problems n fixed them please let me know.
Btw I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.4. I know I can connect via a long VGA cable but that's not really the point. I, at least would like to get my mirrored desktop on my tv back from HDMI!

Ok so I happened to figure it out while on the phone to apple support. Even though the guy was very nice, I think I knew more than him! He was explaining very basic resolution principles I played about. I had the second option in displays resolution. All I did was unplug the HDMI cable, click on 'best for display' then plugged the HDMI in and my resolution on the normal monitor changed to the normal blue, then went black momentarily and then changed to a strange resolution but another window appeared that said SONY BRAVIA HDMI at the top! Hey presto! Don't know why it didn't do it yesterday - I probably left the HDMI cable in or something! Oh well. Problem solved!

  • I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions? Thanks

What do you mean by "HD to VGA adapter converter"?
Do you mean have an HDMI to VGA adapter connected the the Mini's HDMI port?
Or maybe you plugged n the the included HDMI to DVI adapter and then connected a DVI to DVI adapter?
In either case that will not work since VGA is analog and the Mini's HDMI port is digital only.
You need to purchase a mini displayport to VGA adapter. It plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port.

Make sure you get a name--brand one. I purchased some el cheapo, no-name ones and they did not work

  • Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter  from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

This is the picture of all the ports from my iMac
This is the mini DVI to HDMI converter which I bought from ebay. And I have the HDMI cable to connect it to my TV
Could anyone please suggest me a solution how I could connect my iMac to the LG smart TV? Also I need to know if this transmits the audio as well to the smart TV?
Suggestions are welcomed. I really appreciate and thank you for your time

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

Depends on your model TV.   Read your TV user manual.  The newer models have "how to hookup" instructions for computer & games.
You can also do a forum search as well as a Google search.

  • Dual Monitor Hook-up, DVI/VGA/HDMI?

I think it's time to retire my aging samsung 22" and buy a few 23" LED's to replace it.
My graphics card only has DVI out (x2), and the 3 monitors I'm looking at do not have dual DVI (either dual HDMI and DVI, or DVI/VGA/HDMI), so I would need adapters from DVI to HDMI/VGA. I'm guessing that's all handled at the adapter/hardware level, so linux should have no problem finding them, but if I'm hooking 1 up natively to DVI, and the other through an adapter (or both through adapters), will I notice any quality difference between the 2 monitors?

Personally I use my HDMI monitor as my main monitor and have the secondary monitor attatched to VGA. I can't really tell the difference in performance between the two, however I never work with anything terribly graphics intensive.
and it hurts to hear that my Samsung 22" is also  'aging'  of course so is my 17" secondary I guess maybe that'll be my next investment...
    Sorry about the aging comment
But this is the answer I was looking for! I don't want to have 1 monitor hooked up via HDMI and the other VGA and be able to see a noticeable difference between the 2. I don't do anything graphics intensive either.
    Thanks for all the responses!

  • HDMI Converter to USB 3.0 for Monitor stopped working

After upgrading to the Yosemite OS, my second monitor quit working. I use a HDMI converter to USB 3.0 adapter. I tried both USB ports. I have restarted and powered down my Mac Air book. I did have it connected to an external 4 port USB at first but now tried the direct connect to the MAC air. Now I have tried over USB devices like my external Apple Drive. It is not working either. So my guess is something is wrong with my USB ports. I am new to a MAC so I do not know how to check the drivers and see if working. Help please. yes I will google how to's. Many thanks

  • Thunderbolt to HDMI converter

I recently purchased a new TV and want to be able to hook my MacBookPro up to it to stream movies & such.
I purchased a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI converter & am able to play the content from my laptop to the TV, but the audio still comes out of the laptop speakers rather than the TV speakers. So I purched a headphone-to-RCA cable but when I plug that in to the laptop no sound comes out from anywhere. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!!

    Hi there,
I would recommend double checking the system Sound Output in system preferences. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • HT4211 Help. Can't mirror display with ios7, ipad 2, hdmi converter to tv.

Recently updated to newest OS 7.0.2 on my ipad. For a presentation I need Keynote to be viewed on a tv with hdmi converter and hdmi cable. When I plug in and push play to test any videos or keynote nothing is mirrored to the tv. I did some research and found that changing the language did allow the ipad to be mirrored successfully but when I unplugged the hdmi dongle from the iPad and back in again it didn't work again. Even after trying the language switch again still didn't work. Also restarted the ipad multiple times, nothing works. When I plug the hdmi dongle a blue bar does appear on the top of my ipad which means it is connected and the tv does display the input as active. Please help, it makes no sense.

it only shows a wall paper
Then it is working! This is how it works:
Your built-in screen and you external screen are each show at sizes proportional to their pixel count. If this is not the correct arrangement, then drag the screens so that they correspond with their placement on your bench.
Then move the mouse off the edge of one screen, and it appears on the other. Next drag a window across to the other screen.

  • 2008 MBP -- DVI out -- DVI/HDMI converter -- HDTV ?

    Hi guys,
I'm gonna go ahead and apologize in advance if this has been asked before, I'm having a bit of an emergency.
The backlight on my 2008 MBP (model A1260) has gone out -- I can still somewhat see the screen but it's extremely dim. I'm wondering if I can buy a DVI/HDMI converter and run the video out to my HDTV. Are there any extra supplies I'll need?
Also, any instructions for enabling the HDTV as my external display would be greatly appreciated as I'm barely able to read anything on the screen in its current state.
    Thanks so much!

  • Dvi miniport with dvi-hdmi converter

When using my dvi miniport. I have a dvi->hdmi converter. I was wondering how I can make the sound go trough it?

Open System Preferences>Displays and make certain that you have checked the box titled 'Detect Displays'
Your TV Manual should have instructions for connecting a computer.  Some TVs have several HDMI ports.  Make certain that you have selected the correct one.

  • DVI/HDMI converter for a Samsung TV

Curently I have an ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB on my Mac Pro, and on FCPX I manage 3 monitors (two 24" and one 22" but all 1920X1080 resolution) and all is fine.
Now, I was thinking to sustitute the 22" one with a 32" led television Samsung which has Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. So all should be fine. My doubt is: Samsung TV has HDMI in, so I have to go with a DVI/HDMI converter. Could this cause any problem??

You can get a simple cable that is DVI on one end, and HDMI on the other.  I've used these several times in the past.
