Vga - Hdmi ?

I want to connect my old geforce 2 mx400 card to a new hd-ready tv. For now it's connected over the s-video on the card and scart on the tv. the biggest resolution i can get is 800x600 and it has black border around it .  I want to try to connect VGA to HDMI, but is it gonna work? I have seen only VGA to DVI and DVI to HDMI adapters, and because of that i'm in doubt that this will work. Would it work just by combining together an VGA to DVI and DVI to HDMI adapter? Or am I better off buying a new (AGP) graphics card?

Interestingly enough, calling YPbPr component video is a misnomer since there are many types of component video, of which VGA is one (also known as RGBHV).  And since both YPbPr and VGA are so similar it's not too hard to wire up a converter yourself.  VGA uses 5 wires, one for the Red, one for the Green, one for the Blue and two for synchronization.  YPbPr only uses 3 wires, one for luma, one for the difference between blue and luma and one for the difference between red and luma.  The main differences between VGA and YPbPr are that YPbPr does not send green, and that YPbPr does not have horizontal and vertical sync wires. Both of these are easy to get around of actually, since you're sending luma and the difference between luma and red, as well as the difference between luma and blue, if you subtract the from luma both the differences between luma and red and between luma and blue, what you are left with is the difference between luma and green, and in component video used in televisions, the sync is on the luma (Y) wire as well.
Simply put, summing R, G, and B would give you luma, and then subtracting B and G from R would give you Pr, and then subtracting R and G from B would give you Pb.  Adding the synchronization to Y is slightly more complicated, but can still be done with only a few components.  Try searching google for VGA transcoder, VGA YPrPb transcoder, or DIY VGA transcoder or something to find a circuit someone has already built, there are lots out there.
Oh, and I just realized I am dumb.  I just reread your post and you said you had a SCART connector.  I live in Canada and SCART is usually used in Europe so I might not be right, but I seem to recall SCART on televisions using RGBS, but I'm not 100% sure. RGBS would use a wire for Red, a wire for Green, a wire for Blue, and a single wire for synchronization.  In this case you would only have to convert the sync being on H and V to simply being on S, which is is even easier than the way I described above. So yeah, sorry for the long winded reply, but make a search for a transcoder circuit from RGBHV to RGBS and I'm sure you'll come across something, it can  be done with few gates and a transistor or two, so look for something relatively simple.
Oh, and yes you can buy these transcoders, but they're usually over a $100 for only a few dollars worth of parts, and since it's so simple to build it can just be thrown on a prototype board instead of making a PCB for it.  Well, I hope that helps, take care.

  • Dual Monitor Hook-up, DVI/VGA/HDMI?

I think it's time to retire my aging samsung 22" and buy a few 23" LED's to replace it.
My graphics card only has DVI out (x2), and the 3 monitors I'm looking at do not have dual DVI (either dual HDMI and DVI, or DVI/VGA/HDMI), so I would need adapters from DVI to HDMI/VGA. I'm guessing that's all handled at the adapter/hardware level, so linux should have no problem finding them, but if I'm hooking 1 up natively to DVI, and the other through an adapter (or both through adapters), will I notice any quality difference between the 2 monitors?

Personally I use my HDMI monitor as my main monitor and have the secondary monitor attatched to VGA. I can't really tell the difference in performance between the two, however I never work with anything terribly graphics intensive.
and it hurts to hear that my Samsung 22" is also  'aging'  of course so is my 17" secondary I guess maybe that'll be my next investment...
    Sorry about the aging comment
But this is the answer I was looking for! I don't want to have 1 monitor hooked up via HDMI and the other VGA and be able to see a noticeable difference between the 2. I don't do anything graphics intensive either.
    Thanks for all the responses!

  • Z77A-G43 No onboard VGA,HDMI and DVI, No audio

I have a Z77A-G43 with a i5-3350P processor. I connected my monitor (Iiyama) on the on-board VGA port. After installation i started up the computer. I could see the the computer was starting up on the keyboard but i did not see anything on the monitor. My monitor has two inputs, VGA and HDMI, so i tried the on-board HDMI-port. Again no picture.
Then i put in a videocard in the PCIe slot and connected the monitor on the VGA output of the videocard.
I started up the computer and now i could see the start-up on the monitor, so the monitor and VGA cable are oke.
After installation of the software i saw that there where no speakers attached. Tested the speakers on a other the computer and the are oke. So i have allso a problem with the on-board speakeroutput.
It is a new motherboard and i went back the the shop and got another motherboard, installed it and started up the computer. I got the same problems with this new motherboard as with the one i had before.
I checked all the connections seferal times and did not find anything wrong.
With a videocard i could see in the BIOS. All the connected hardware was recognized.
What could be the problem with the on-board VGA, HDMI and the on-board speakeroutput.

How far has the build progressed? Got the OS installed yet? You have to have the audio driver loaded before you get the audio to work.

  • Macbook pro Mini displayport to VGA/HDMI needs restart to work

I am having a strange problem. I have an original Apple mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter and one non-apple mini-displayport to HDMI adapter. When I connect external monitor through either one of those it doesn't work unless i restart my computer. I tried different monitors but i see the same problem. Has anyone faced a similar problem? I checked online but didn't see any postings.
My macbook pro is relatively new (bought in april), i5 processor.

Thanks but I tried this the very first time this started happening. Didn't work

  • New 2012 Mac mini having screen resolution problem when I connect to either 27" LG or 22" Hannspree monitor. Tried mini display port to VGA/HDMI and HDMI to DVI-D cables... all same isse

New 2012 Mac mini having issues in connecting to third party Monitors. Connected my mac mini to a 27" LG monitor. Text looks blurred. Tried connecting to the monitor using 3 options. 1) mini port to HDMI, then HDMI cable to LG monitor. 2) Mini port to VGA, then VGA cable to monitor 3) HDMI port on mini mac to DVI-D cable then DVI to DVI cable... In all cases text is not clear. Anyone has similar issues with latest mini mac. The monitor works fine when I connect to a windows 7 Samsung laptop. Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Why do you use always 2 cables? There's a lot that can go wrong.
    1.) Hardware:
    - Use only one cable, best an HDMI->HDMI cable. It doesn't need to be an expensive one, they've proven to be no worse than those "esoteric", expensive ones.
    - Set the monitor to the HDMI input.
    - The modes you are listing are only "picture modes" changing color/brightness/contrast settings, not resolution or the likes, so pick the one you like best later, or enter your own settings under Custom.
    2.) OS X:
    - Usually the Mac detects the screen itself and chooses the best settings, so by default you need to do nothing than make a proper hardware connection to get a decent image.
    - However, there have been issues with new Mac Minis and particularly their HDMI ports. But reportedly they have been fixed with a software update. So, launch the App Store and check under Updates if there is one for you to install. If so, do it; otherwise you should be good to go.
    - If you require, go to System Preferences -> Displays. In the Dispaly tab, by default, "Best for display" should be selected, and that is typically true. If you want, select "Scaled" and 1920x1080, plus a frequency from the list (where higher is usually better, but just pick the one that works best for you). If you can't see a change to the better, you best go back to "Best for display".
    - If you are not happy with the colors on your screen, you'll find eventually more than one choice in the Color tab, though your particular screen should be in the list and its Display Profile should get you the best result. (Double-check picture modes on your display: if you're far off there, you won't make it much better with the Mac's settings).

  • Differences between adapters? (MiniDVI- VGA/HDMI and DisplayPort- VGA/HDMI)

    Hello everyone
I'm going to buy a new Late 2009 Mac mini, wich for the time being will be connected to my old 17 inches Samsung LCD using VGA (I know, it's not the best solution but I can't afford buying a new monitor now) and occasionally to my Samsung FullHD LCD TV. So here are my two questions
    1) What's the difference between using a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and a Mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter?
    2) What's the difference between using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter? Are both HDCP compliant?
I know these may be stupid questions, but I'm a ex Windows user and the "Macverse" is new to me Thanks

One important difference between the VGA versions of the adapter is that DisplayPort does not output analog video. As such, the adapter is expensive because it has a D to A (digital to analog) converter built inside of it. It may be more prone to trouble, but it is also able to be firmware upgraded, which has already happened one time. Anyway, I would tend to choose the DVI version of the VGA adapter if for no other reason than it being cheaper.
The difference between the DVI/HDMI adapters is not so big I think, so it wouldn't matter which was used to drive an HDMI display. Either port on the back of the mini will support HDCP, and that is important with HDMI.

  • HP 2310ei Monitor (DP/DVI-D) to VGA/HDMI laptop

So, I recently bought the HP 2310ei Monitor. It has DisplayPort and DVI-D connections.
Originally I had planned to just use a VGA/DVI adapter, but I didn't realise that there's a difference between DVI-I and DVI-D. Now I'm wondering, whats my best option?
Buy a Vga to DVI-D adapter? Or a Vga to DisplayPort?
Or maybe go with HDMI to DisplayPort?
On the official DisplayPort website I read that there is no efficient way to connect a VGA Laptop to a DisplayPort monitor because of Analog/Digital, whatever that means, but in a different topic on this bord I also read that someone who bought a HDMI to DisplayPort cable couldnt get it working, so I'm kinda at a loss.
    What are my best options?
    This question was solved.

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the computer that is being connected to this monitor.
There isn't a VGA to DVI-D adapter nor a VGA to DisplayPort adapter on the market, however there may be some expensive active convertors. Depending on your exact computer and its video output ports, you may have a few options. Being that you also ask about going from HDMI to DisplayPort, one can assume your computer has an HDMI out. If this is the case... the easiest, cheapest, and way to connect an HDMI output to the HP 2310ei is with an HDMI-to-DVI cable.

  • Does 5870 support ACD/VGA/HDMI at the same time?

I have a 5870 video card in my 2010 Mac Pro. One mini displayport (mDP) is connected to a 27" ACD. Currently I have the second mDP connected through a mDP-to-VGA adapter to a 17" VGA monitor. Everything works fine.
I decided to free up the second mDP and reconnected the VGA through a VGA-to-DVI (I) adapter.
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041903&pid=2396&seq=1&format=2
    Again everything still works fine.
Now that the second mDP was free I tried to hook it to my Sony 32XBR6 to it with a a 15' HDMI cable connected to a mDP-to-HDMI DVI-I adapter.
    http://www.frys.com/product/6311581
As soon as I connected the TV it displayed my desktop. Great, except for the fact that the VGA disconnected.
What I found is that I cannot seem to use the second mDP for HDMI and the DVI for VGA _at the same time_. I can use the main 27" ACD and the VGA (with the HDMI disconnected) or the main 27" ACD and the HDMI (with the VGA connected), just not all concurrently as a three-monitor configuration.
The physical connection of the HDMI disables the VGA but not the other way around. Detect displays or rebooting has no effect. I thought the 5870 is capable of driving three monitors albeit one of those monitors is through a HDMI connection. And I would think a 17" VGA cannot require that much "power" from the card couldn't handle it.
Now I suppose the problem could be the specific adapters I used. But considering they work independently I'm not inclined to blame them.
So does anybody have any idea what may be going wrong? Or is this just a limitation of the 5870 in a VGA/ADC/HDMI configuration?

HDMI is basically single-link DVI plus digital audio in one cable. You can find simple DVI to HDMI adapters and cables. They contain no electronics; they just convert between connectors. They do not provide audio since there is no audio in DVI.
DVI (and HDMI) use one data line and one clock line per link. DVI can be single or dual link, but HDMI is only single link. Mini DisplayPort has two data lines available for video. Clock lines aren't used. A passive adapter tells the Mini DisplayPort to send data on one line and clock on the other. There are not enough lines for this to work with dual-link DVI, so dual-link adapters include active circuitry to separate the clock and data from one line. VGA adapters also need active circuitry.
The Apple tech note says that for three displays, no passive adapters can be used.
There are some active single-link Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters available

    such as
    <http://accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/mdpdvi_slactive.htm>
(You could add a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable to make it HDMI, but it wouldn't have audio.)
but the only active Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter I have found is this
    <http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/337561577/miniactive_display_port_tohdmi.html>
If you could get one (not 500) it should solve your problem.
My suggestion to get HDMI from the card's DVI port won't get audio (I didn't see that requirement in your original post) but you could combine video from the card's DVI port (or from an active Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter) with audio from the Mac Pro's optical audio output port to HDMI with

  • Vga/hdmi adapter for envy x2

is the hp elitepad hdmi/vga adapter compatible with my hp envy x2 tablet?

    Hi,
Please check the compatible list on the following link:

No not in the list, BUT I believe it should compatible with all HDMI/VGA standard unless HP makes this product is out of HDMI-VGA standard. To be at the safe side, buy other product on the market, hundreds of them are out there.

  • Greetings, Question about Lightening to VGA/HDMi Adapter

Greetings. For those with experience with the Lightening to VGA or HDMI adapter, will whatevers being mirrored from the Iphone 5, still be visible on the Plasma TV if I put the phone on standby? I've an Iphone 5c in this case. Some guy at the apple store said I can only turn the brightness down to minimum. Unacceptable.

standby turn off the phone like closing the lid of a laptop it's used to when one is not using the phone it's only doing a minimum of actions such as being able to recieve calls and the likes
so yes it stops displaying the ios screen mirrored on the tv when you suspend the phone

    Will not work well

  • I have a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, then I purchased 3 VGA adapters: a VGA to HDMI, VGA to Component, and VGA to RCA. When I hook them up to my TV (I've tried multiple TVs) they do not detect a display, even when I click Detect Displays.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a solution for this?  The only other Mini DP I found was a HDMI connection.  I want to make sure I can connect to not only TV's via HDMI, Component or RCA, but also projectors (some of which may be older requiring a Component or RCA connection).

None of the three lower adapters pictured in your post will do you any good with your MBP.
    1. The VGA-HDMI adapter does the reverse of what you want: it yields VGA output from HDMI input. The opposite is not possible; a VGA input does not contain all the information necessary to create an HDMI output. You'll have to get a direct mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter instead.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
    2. VGA-Component: Lots of posters here when the MDP-equipped MBs and MBPs first came out tried adapters like this one with no success. What does work with the MDP (and a VGA adapter) is a converter box like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Startech-Component-YPbPr-Video-Converter/dp/B000G6Y0S6
    3. VGA-Composite: This doesn't work with MBPs either. For Composite or S-Video output, you need a converter box like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/PC-To-TV-Video-Converter/dp/B001CJOLBW/ref=pd_cp_e_2
    or this:
    http://www.startech.com/AV/Converters/Video/High-Resolution-PC-VGA-to-TV-Convert er-with-Remote-Control~VGA2NTSCPRO
These converter boxes will work fine in combination with your Apple MDP-VGA adapter.

  • Why does a DVI or VGA look better than HDMI for 2nd Monitor

Why does a DVI or VGA connection for a program monitor look better than HDMI. I've tested this on several systems with CS5x and CS6. The full screen output from premiere definitely looks worse with HDMI.
I can often see visual differences with the Windows GUI as well, over sharpening of text and lines, harsh rendering of gradients. It looks like a VGA signal displayed on a television.
I've looked at the NVidia stetting and it appears to be set to 1920x1080 at 60hz either way, DVI or HDMI. On one Acer 20 inch monitor the was VGA, HDMI, Composite, Component, and Digital Tuner, but no DVI. The program monitor has always looked blah from the HDMI. So I recently switched the connection to a DVI to VGA adaptor, and now the video looks so much better.
    Any thoughts or explanations?

Just because the monitors accept a 1080P signal doesn't mean their native resolution is 1920x1080. At 20 inch they very likely can scale that signal down to the native resolution of the panel which may be 1600 x 900 or another resolution that is 16 x 9 resolution. That scaling can be done by the GPU or firmware on the Monitor depending on the video driver options and the firmware options. That scaling is also the most common cause to text and icon blurriness you are talking about. As an example there are Pro monitors that accept a 4K signal but scale it down to 2.5K or 2K on the actual panel. You might try going into your video card settings such as Nvidia control panel and look for the scaling options. Select GPU scaling and see if the preview is better. If that doesn't work select no scaling and see if it's better if the monitor firmware handles the scaling.
