VGA Mode

I used a VGA lead from laptop to TV when doing this all the icons ect go larger than normal. Now when starting up my laptop it still seems to be in this mode and wont let me edit my password to get to my desktop. Please help.

Hello,
It sounds like you might need to adjust the resolution on your display to get it back to the preferred size, here are some steps that might help you resolve this issue:
For Vista:
1. Right-click the desktop background, and select Personalize .
2. Select Display Settings to open the Display Settings window.
3. To change the screen area size for the selected monitor, drag the slider under Screen resolution.drag the slider to the right to increase the screen size area, making icons and text appear smaller.
4. Click OK .
confirmation window open.
5. Click Yes to save the settings
Good luck!!

  • How to get my macbook pro out of VGA mode

I plugged my new Macbook Pro into a VGA adapter to do a slideshow on a projector screen, and after i was finnished, my mac is still in VGA mode on the lcd screen - is a awkward view mode.  Does anyone know how to revert back to a normal viewing mode?  Even after restarting the macbook, it remains in the mode for being connected to a vga cord.  thank you.

Safe Mode uses a simple display mode and bypasses the stored settings. It can be used to get out of situations where you set the resolution or configuration wrong.
Hold down Shift as you start up.
It will run a pass of "Repair Disk", which takes several minutes.
Then it will come up with minimal extensions loaded and default display settings.
Provide your User_id and password and log in.
Change the displays prefs to something boring.
Be certain to close the pref pane and Save changes.
    Restart.

I remember this message from the first time i played around with the vga= kernel option long time ago. There is basically now way around it and I'm not sure if it does produce any problems afterall.
On my laptop I can only get what my bios allows as resolution (1024x768x32) on a 1280x800 display. Only way to get true native resolution is with nouveau and KMS.
Tried uvesafb and everything in the wiki but simply can't get any high than 1024x768. Syslinux Hardware Detection Tools also only listes this has the highest possible vga mode and provides the appropriate number for it.
Let's hope that NVIDA will support KMS in the future. Not only for prettier ttys but also for wayland.
Also like to use KMSCON in the future as kernel console replacement. Anti-Aliased hardware accelerated FullHD console Hello!
kmscon-git is already in the AUR.

Then after the logo dissappears and the mac boots the message "mode not supported" pops up. Please help. I am planing to use the computer soon.

  • [SOLVED] The 773 vga mode?

Arch supports FrameBuffer mode and a 1024 x 768 display for my video card (Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller). However whenever I try to compile the kernel from source (basically to disable modules I do not need and also to change the boot logo) I end up getting either a blank screen while boot-up or a message saying the 773 video resolution is not supported.
Specifically I get a resolution not supported error (expectedly I guess) when I compile the kernel without making any changes in menuconfig. However even then all the difference there is is in the console mode; once I start xorg and gnome I get a full 1280 X 800 without any problems.
When I enable any (or all) of the following under frame-buffer devices I get a blank screen. I have tried linking them to the kernel permanently as well as trying to enable them as modules.
    VGA 16-color graphics support (NEW)
Userspace VESA VGA graphics support (NEW)
    Intel 830M/845G/852GM/855GM/865G/915G/945G/945GM/965G/965GM support (EXPERIMENTAL) (NEW)
My notebook probably boots since after a minute when I enter a my username and password and type reboot and press enter it does reboot. I realize that even the RAMFS will reboot my computer if I type reboot but the HDD activity LED makes it pretty clear that the notebook does boot.
    Any help is appreciated.
PS. An lsmod on the Arch Linux kernel shows me something like intel_agp. I think that this might be missing the in kernels I have compiled. I will have to double check though.

Woah, you shouldn't even be using vga=, that's for vesa. You should use intelfb. I'd recommend
Devices Drivers ---> Graphics support ---> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
    [Y] Intel 830M, 845G, 8252GM, 855M, 865G (i915 driver) --->
    i915 driver
[Y] Enable modessetting on intel by default
Device Drivers ---> Graphics support ---> Console display driver support
    [Y] Framebuffer Console support
In /boot/grub/menu.lst, you'll want on the kernel line
    video=intelfb:1280x800-24@60
Don't use vga. That's for vesa.

  • VGA mode settings affect Chromium tabs text

    Hi,
This sounds incredible. Maybe, supernatural is a better word.
    The game, step by step:
    (1) Onboard Intel video card. Everything's fine, thanks to KMS, probably. I never have had to touch anything: all the resolutions, grub, X or no X, correct right from the start. Chromium  on my desktop (KDE) is OK, which is taken for granted.
    (2) Nvidia card is bought; no KMS for me any more. No big deal. An interesting artifact shows up, though: I start getting garbled text in the Chromium tabs (KDE again, of course). About half the characters are in place, another half gets replaced by random characters. I've been living with it for some time (no big deal). But I didn't like 800x600 resolution for GRUB2 and the terminals; so I went through the proper motions and changed resolution to 1280x1024. Not quite native for a 1400x1059 monitor, but almost perfect. While admiring my handiwork I've found a bonus: Chromium tabs look right again!
I understand that video modes is a prominent case of either-or. Or is it really so?

anonymous_user wrote:However, it was supposedly "fixed" with the xorg packages version 1.13.0.902-2. Is your system up-to-date?
Yes, my system is up-to-date. No, this isn't my story: partial transparency I've been taking for a feature; I'm still taking it for one .

  • Nvidia VGA has a hidden mode to OC through Windows.

Ok guys. I've managed to find out the hidden for the NVIDIA VGA mode. However, I've tried on my 6600 VGA and it's stabile for 6 months till now I'm using the same setting and managed it to OC at Core Clock@400Mhz with Memory Clock Frequency@670Mhz. Hopes that this setting can help you guys. Need to do some changes in the registry. Here's the procedure that I've done:
    1) Go to START
    2) RUN type REGEDIT
    3) Under HKEY_Local_Machine go to Software
    4) Under NVIDIA Corporation go to NVTweak
    5) On the hand side RIGHT MOUSE CLICK to Create DWord Value
    6) Then key in CoolBits (without any quote).
    7) Go to CoolBits again then key in the Value Data into 3 existing was 0 then select Hexadecimal Base.
    8) Then Save it.
    9) Go to Display Properties select Advance
    10) Then select GeForce (VGA name) then search for CLOCK FREQUENCY SETTINGS.
    11) Then select MANUAL OVERCLOCKING and which setting you required such as 2D or 3D.
    12) It's also can set setting by using the DETECT OPTIMAL FREQUENCIES.
    13) Restart.
This also tide to NVIDIA VGA only not ATI. Tested so far is GF 6series and MMX400 64MB (Core Clock@315Mhz and Frequencies@320Mhz).

Old to some is new. Yeah the CoolBits hack is awesome regardless of its age. I remember pushing my old GeForce FX 5700 to 5900 speeds. Granted I killed two GPU fans (I blame that on the Shuttle SFF case. Heat pocket built up by the video card. In a regular ATX case there's plenty of ventilation), but the card still works to this day. It's installed now on my lil bro's rig. He may not have the latest and great but heck, he can install and play every PC Game on the market today. He's got:
    Athlon XP 2600+
    WinFast 748K7AA Motherboard
    512 MB DDR333
    75 GB IBM Deskstar
256 MB Albatron GeForce FX 5700
    NEC DVD Recorder (forgot model)
    Onboard sound card AC'97
I put it together for him from parts I had laying around and left over during the holidays. The rig is running great with the CoolBits as well.

I suspect that it's still the case. You may even have this message in your own dmesg.
Switch console to VGA mode and use xterm instead.
This has nothing to do with resolution setting in a framebuffer, which is what the title of the thread suggests.
I'm pretty sure it does - it looks like the console is being switched to VGA text mode; nvidia has no reason to touch fonts.

  • Olde Performa 6360 ... can't get it into a decent video mode

Trying to fire up an old Performa 6360. It powers up without problem, but I've connected it (via an adapter) to a cheap X2gen LCD monitor. It supports most usual VGA modes, but it always tells me that the signal from the Performa is out of its range.
I've repeatedly zapped the PRAM and tried (unsuccessfully) to boot into open firmware with Cmd-Option-O-F -- no luck.
    Any suggestions??

The adapter you choose supplies a code which the Mac reads at the DB-15(two-row) connector at startup. That code determines what resolutions and frequencies are available. The TITLE of the Monitors Control Panel window is a strong hint about what it thinks (based on the adapter code) is attached.
The tech specs confirm what Niteshooter posted for resolutions above:

  • DVI or VGA

I just purchased an Acer x233h to use with my MBP 15. I use it mostly for business application. Is there a difference in screen quality using DVI or VGA? Right now its in VGA mode and its nice but was wondering if DVI mode would be better. If I use DVI what adapter do I need?
Also, is there a way to use the Acer as the "only" monitor - i.e. - turn my MBP into a desktop. Everytime I close the screen on the MBP it wants to shut down.
    Thanks,
    Jim

If the Acer monitor has a DVI-in port, using the Mini-displayport-to-DVI adapter and a standard DVI cable to connect to the monitor would yield higher image quality on the monitor than a VGA connection does.
Instructions for using the MBP in closed-display (clamshell) mode are here:

  • VGA monitor out of range error

    Hello all,
I'm putting together a new computer with an oldish VGA only monitor. I used the latest installation disk. Installation went fine. I then did pacman -Syu of course. After that, whenever I boot my computer, it boots the kernel and shortly afterwards (before the login prompt) cause the monitor to go "out of range". I've tested the monitor with a Windows laptop and it seems fine. My question is: why did the VGA mode change during boot? How do I avoid that? If I can get a prompt and install X it'll be one step anyway. Thanks,
