Mac Mini Won't Boot with VGA Monitor Connected

I have a new Mac Mini connected to an older VGA monitor using the Apple brand VGA adapter. The mini is fully up to date and runs perfectly when booted. However, if I reboot the mini with the VGA monitor connected, it fails to boot. I just hear the faint chime sound every other second. There is no output to the monitor and the only way I can get it to boot is to disconnect the monitor and then power cycle the mini. I can reconnect the monitor just seconds after powering back on and it finishes booting properly.
Anyone else experience this? It is very frustrating. I've also tested with an HDMI connected monitor (without the VGA adapter) and it boots just fine and the display works properly.

Okay, I'm back with good news: I have found two remedies for the problem which will hopefully solve it for you as well.
Given that the issue only occurs when certain monitors are connected, I concluded that the root of it must be a bug in the Mac's firmware related to DDC (Display Data Channel) handling, and that the most promising way to address it should be to just disable the DDC.
Workaround #1: If your monitor has BNC connectors, use a VGA to BNC cable.
In this configuration the DDC pins are not connected to the monitor at all. This did indeed fix the problem - my Mac mini booted without a problem with the monitor connected. However, I was not completely satisfied with this solution, because VGA to BNC cables are usually quite heavy and inflexible, and do no go together well with Apple's MDP to VGA adapter and the Mini Displayport/Thunderbolt port which has no locking mechanism.
Workaround #2: Remove pin 12 of the VGA plug.
Pin 12 of the VGA plug connects the serial data line of the DDC. Pulling out this pin with a pair of needle nose pliers will effectively disable DDC. I hesitated to do this to my cable (a direct MDP to VGA cable which eliminates the need for a separate adapter dangling from the Mac) and therefore bought a tiny VGA male to female adapter (also called port saver, e.g. Delock 65250) to perform the surgery on that. This has done the trick and my Mac mini has started up fine ever since.
Of course, without DDC the Mac won't know the model name and capabilities of the attached monitor and thus offer some resolution and frequency settings which the monitor may not support, but that's a small drawback compared to having to pull out the monitor cable everytime you turn on or restart your Mac.

Satellite Pro U200 - External VGA monitor does not show any output

I have bought this device as used from ebay. It is working fine except that the External VGA connection does not work. I am using win 7 and have it does recognize the external display correctly and I can configure it as an extended display. However the external display does not show anything. The external VGA monitor is fine as it works with other Laptop machines. I have tried using UBUNTU Live CD on this machine and tried to make the external display work (and it can also recongize the external display and configure it) but there is no picture. I also connected the external display to the vga port and then re-booted the machine but still no picture. I have tried changing the bios settings for the display as well but all my actions point to a hardware fault.
I am not sure if it is a manufacturing fault ? Do you know if this issue has been reported earlier to you. Is there a product recall issued for this?
Please advise as I need to connect this external display but am sure that it is a hardware fault with your device.

Have you already tested it with factory settings? I mean the preinstalled Windows from Toshiba with all drivers and tools. If you have the Toshiba recovery disk you should boot from this disk and install Windows with all drivers and tools.
Furthermore you can switch between external and internal monitor using FN+F5 key combination. Does this work?

External VGA monitor

I've just brought the laptop and gone through the update saga, everything is working but one thing, the external VGA monitor is only ever accepted as being 1280x1024 despite it being 1600x1200 native.
I have tried everything I can think of, uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel and Nvidia drivers (I'm really not sure which one is driving the VGA despite setting the laptop to always use the NVidia card), and editing the EDID for the monitor to try and force the graphics card to output 1600x1200. My old laptop connected to it fine, and I've tested it with other equipment which also works fine.
Has anyone else come across this issue? The monitor is a Sun 22" CRT, its actually a rebadged Sony and goes under the driver name GDM-5510.
Not sure here if I have faulty hardware as the notebook is brand new (7 days old), so wondering if sending it back is the best option (I guess since I've opened all the packaging the 7 day distance seller regulations are not an option?).
Any advice appreciated.

Yes, you are right, I did not tested it with another cable yet, and its a cheap VGA one, but it does not do this on on a very cheap budget laptop. Maybe the VGA port on the Thinkpad is very sensitive. Its running on 60 Hertz. I only have 50 and 60 to choose. And I always run on the highest.

G4 iMac thinks an external VGA monitor is attached.

My first Mac is the 17 inch G4 iMac. I'm fairly sentimental about this machine.
The iMac running 10.4.11 thinks that there is an external VGA monitor attached to it. The iMac also assigns this "ghost VGA monitor" as the main screen. Every few minutes the screen will flicker from blue, to black and to white before resetting itself. This flickering will continue at random intervals thereafter. Under the Display settings there is no option to turn off mirroring or to arrange the screens.
Years ago I used to use one of those honking CRT Studio Displays. That thing died a long time ago though. Is there some old preferences file that could be screwing with my iMac?
I have also attempted to zap the NVRAM + PRAM. It did not solve the issue.

I don't think there is a way to undo the firmware update, until the installer from the developer has an uninstall option, or there was an uninstall program included with the install program. You can download it again and see.
However, now that you have it working partially (it's acting like you have another display attached), try resetting the PRAM again. You did that as a byproduct of resetting the PMU, but things were not working +almost correctly+ at that time. This is the reset PRAM procedure.

That might help, because some display settings are stored in PRAM, so the one that indicates a second display could be corrupted.
Also, when I changed display settings on my Mac (such as resolution or arrangement), these are the files I saw getting updated.

(There is a random-looking alphanumeric string where I put the dots - probably different for each system.)
So you might try dragging those preference files to the Desktop to let the system create new ones. Then restart. Note: The above files are for Leopard; could be different if you are using Tiger.

Trying to connect VGA monitor to laptop which adaptor do i buy?

I bought one but its the wrong one, I want to connect a VGA monitor to my macbook (aluminum) which one do I buy?
There is Mini which isn't hte same size port for this macbook, there is a DVI version, one that has the roundish adaptor part one that has the square one I am losing my mind loll.

Opinions about if Mac Mini 2011 works ok with VGA monitors

I have a old HP PC, I want to buy my first Mac Mini and used the keyboard, mouse and VGA monitor (Mod. HP Pavillion mx50) that I have.
Before I purchase the new Mac Mini 2011 and Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, I would like to know if it works ok with my old components, specially with the VGA monitor? I've read on this Community there some persons have monitors problems.
I don't want spend my money and then have problems with the Mac Mini.

MiniDisplayPort-VGA adapters. Available in the online store, at Apple stores, or at BestBuy/MicroCenter/Fry's. Plugs into the Thunderbolt port.
Usually works without issue. But then I use monitors made by LG and Samsung. Others use lesser known brands or models know to have quirks and encounter issues.
Some things to watch for:
Soem adapters have too much plastic coveing the "connection plate", and the cable cannot seat fully. If you just look at one that has too much plastic, you will know what I am talking about.
VGA signals from Macmini are not strong enough to get through mutliple adpaters. If you want a VGA signal, buy 1 VGA adapter. If you want a DVI signal, buy only 1 DVI adapter. Do not get a DVI adaper, than add a mid-line converted to change the DVI adapter to a VGA port.
If you plan to run Windows under BootCamp, the Windows driver for the Tunderbolt port does NOT output snalog (VGA), just digital (DVI, HDMI). So if you plan to use VGA to display Windows output, run Windws under "VM software" (Parallels or VM Fusion) so that OSX can make the VGA signal for you.

Adding second VGA monitor

I recently purchased the 20" intel imac. When I purchased it I also purchased the mini DVI adapter to connect to a television - that works great. I also wanted the option of setting up a second monitor with my computer. I have two older VGA monitors (one is a cybervision c50 and the other is an old mac monitor.) I purchased a mini DVI to VGA adapter and hooked up the second monitor - the computer recognized the monitor was present but I couldn't get an image on the monitor. Thinking it was a bad adapter I exchanged it at the Apple store for another one. I hooked the new one up and had the same problem - I tried it with both monitors I have - both were recognized by the computer but both screens remained black.
Does anyone have any thoughts about why this is happening?

My thought is that since the other adapter works with my television that it is not a problem with the video out of the computer - unless there is something I don't understand about the way it works so.......
I either purchased two bad adapters - or

External VGA Monitor flickering

Hi, I own a t520 and from day one, my external connected VGA monitor Samsung has some flickering. Its hardly noticeable but in dark colors like black you can notice it.
Its only happening on the external monitor and I connected it to another laptop and the issue is not there. I only have this with my Thinkpad.
Is this a hardware problem?

X61S monitor issue

Hi everyone, I'm the happy owner of an X61S Thinkpad. Well, not quite happy at the very moment I must say. I've had this laptop for quite a while already. In fact, I'm not using it as primary computer since 2012 or something. Recently I decided to convert it to some kind of HTPC.Because it was becoming slower and slower, I decided to acquire a "cheap SSD" (almost succeeded). Thing is, I'm blind. And I didn't know my laptop's screen didn't work anymore. I think I've hit it somehow. The fact is, the integrated display is dead. The up-right corner allows one to read a few lines but not the entire BIOS menu. Definitly not.Thus the sighted friend of mine that's helping me out with the new install and I decided to connect an external monitor. ... Which did, sadly, not help. And this is my question: how can I force the laptop's output to be the external VGA monitor? We tryed both connecting it to the internal VGA and the docking station. nor worked.
My friend managed to enter the "BIOS > config > display" menu, but because of the broken display he can't see enough lines to make the change. We aren't actually certain of what's being displayed at all. It might as well be an error message of some sort... So, if one has got a solution for me, I'd be the happiest guy on Earth for a second or two! Which is wonderful, isn't it? Thanks! Regards, Chris

Multiple Monitor Issue

Alright, so I have a 15" Macbook Pro with the dual graphics cards (GeForce 9600M GT and GeForce 9400M GT 256 version). It's the 2.66 intel processor one. Anyway, I've been trying to figure out this dual monitor issue that I've been having for a few days now. When I'm using the 9400M card and I plug into my mini displayport everything works just fine. This includes the VGA cord, the HDMI, as well as a standard Apple monitor. Now, when I switch over to the higher end graphics card, as soon as I plug into the mini displayport my screen goes black. And that's it. I can't do anything. I have to hold the power button down until the computer turns off.
I've been searching for days in order to find an answer to this question or if anyone has ever had a similar problem and no one could help me. I even went to the genius bar and no one could help either. Keep in mind I've tried this in a variety of ways. I've plugged the monitor in after the computer was running, I've had it plugged in while the computer was turning on, and each time after the initial boot up everything goes black.
To make matters worse, I originally came across this issue because I use Windows 7 on bootcamp and I wanted to use dual monitors within Windows. Bootcamp is only set to use the 9600M graphics card which is the one giving me all the heartache and apparently there's no way around it. If anyone has the slightest clue as to what's going on here or why it would be doing such a thing, let me know. Thanks.

Jon: Thanks for answering those questions. Run the Apple Hardware Test that you'll find on one of the DVDs that came with your MBP. If any errors are reported, go back to the Genius Bar with the error codes reported by AHT and ask to have the machine repaired.
If you have extended AppleCare protection, you have a TechTool Deluxe CD/DVD. You can also use that to test your hardware. If it reports any errors, take the exact wording and error codes from that report along with you to the GB, too.
The problem is not with your three external displays or your cables, adapters, or your MBP's mini-Displayport, because they all work fine with the 9400M. The problem isn't some wrong contact that's being made momentarily as you insert the mini-Displayport plug into the port, because it occurs even when the cable is securely connected before starting up the computer. It seems to me the problem must reside either in your 9600M GT or in its connection to the mini-displayport.

Graphics card issue or monitor issue?

Hello, i have a MacPro 2.66 w/ an ATI x1900 and a MacBookPro with th nVidia 8600
i recently purchased a 28" Hanns-g Display which i upgraded from my 20" apple cinema display, im curious if this could be a graphic issue or a monitor issue:
When i connect the 28" monitor to my ATI card (port 1) and boot into 10.4.10 (macPro) i noticed diagonal lines that seem to "scroll" (like an overscan line or something) on greyish and lighter backgrounds.
tried it with the second port, same thing, it does it on all resolutions
(it runs @ 1920x1200).
when i boot into XP and try the same sites i did in 10.4.10 it doesnt do it at all, its as it should.
I tried both VGA>DVI and HDMI>DVI to the ATI on OSX but it only does it with the HDMI>DVI connection under OSX, VGA looks fine.
(btw my ati card is clean as a whistle, no dust or anything)
However if i plug it into my MacBookPRo with hdmi>DVI it doesnt do that at all.
so im wondering probably incompatible monitor or what?
im looking to getting a 30" Apple Display but not if its gonna act up like that on my macpro, none of this appeared on my ACD 20".
any suggestions or tips?

im not experiencing scan line son my 30" ACD display under OSX or XP with my ATI, could be the monitor you are using, but if its not doing it with your MBP than.....idk
sonds strange, try another gfx card or another macpro if possible.

Mac Mini VGA monitor problem: monitor powers off after 15s

Hi
Trying to hook up a Mac Mini to an ancient VGA monitor (Logix). Bought a Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter. On power up the apple logo displays on the monitor, but then the monitor screen goes black and the power light on the monitor flashes.
Is this the Pin 9 problem referred to here?

The monitor only has a VGA input. If the solution is to go buy a new monitor that is fine, but seek advice on which type (budget is an issue)

Update: I have determined that this is due to a bad connector on the internal fan. One of the wires in the connector popped out, and when I put it back in, the first time it went in backwards, so when I tried to attach the fan cable, it crimped the end of the wire connector. That means that it doesn't securely fasten to the internal board. I can situate it to the point where it touches for awhile, and during this time, the Mac Mini does boot up with a solid power light, and stays on. However, eventually the wire goes loose, shutting down the fan, which in turn shuts down the Mac Mini.
Things I've tried:
- I've searched for a fan replacement on the web, but it cannot be found for purchase (not even on eBay).
- I went to Frys Electronics, but they don't have the fan nor that connector.
- I went to the genius bar at the local Apple store, and was informed that Apple nor Apple Authorized businesses are "allowed" to sell me the part. They did confirm that the fan not properly connected would cause the symptoms I'm experiencing.
I guess at this point, I need to do one of the following:
1. Find an unauthorized Apple repair business would be willing to sell me this part.
2. Figure out how to fix the connector on the wire so that it securely attaches to the prong.
3. Pay Apple over $100 to fix what is basically a $5 repair (this option is largely undesireable).
4. Find someone who is throwing out a broken Mac Mini where I can scavenge for the fan.
Any other suggestions, or any help in accomplishing my goal would still be greatly appreciated.

G4 VGA monitor installed OS now want to use ADC monitor

My system was built using a monitor connected to the VGA port. I received the system and I have a 20" Cinema Display with an ADC connector. When I boot I see the Apple logo and the round progress display for a few seconds then the display goes black. I suspect that the system is still looking for the monitor on the VGA port and won't look at the ADC port. Is there any way to change the system to use the other port without reinstalling or connecting a VGA monitor (which I don't have access to)?

Now, firstly; your Mac won't likely be looking for a monitor connected to VGA; it will automatically sense that there's an ADC monitor plugged in, so there should be no issues there.
I can't think of a cause for such a problem off the top of my head. However, can you confirm that the system continues to boot after the display turns off?
It's quite possible that the power supply has weakened from age, and can't hold onto the requirements of running both the computer & screen for very long.
If you can still hear drive access, etc. after this point, I suggest you try resetting the PRAM; hold down command-option-P-R right after pressing the power button, and keep them held down until you hear the chime a second time.
Alternatively, hold command-option-O-F, and when the Open Firmware prompt comes up, type the following, pressing Enter between lines;
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
Give that a try, you never know!
