VGA output on new iMac G5 (iSight)

According to the tech specs, the new iMac G5 (iSight) can mirror its internal display onto an external VGA display (using the optional adapter).
Can someone who has both the new iMac and the adapter please test whether it actually outputs two different resolutions (for example, 1680x1050 on the internal display and 1024x768 on the external monitor)? Or is it like the older iMac models, which can only drive both displays at the same resolution, effectively rendering the internal display useless while an external one is connected?
Thanks.

It mirrors exactly the same resolution being displayed on the internal display.

  • FCP will not open on my new iMac G5 (iSight)

I have i have FCP 4.5 and just recently accquired a new 20" iMac G5 (iSight). I installed FCP on my new mac and it doesn't want to start up. I get a message that says "Configuration error: This software requires hardware or software which is missing. AGP graphics card."
Has anyone else heard of this problem and if so how can you fix it?
I greatly appreciate in advance to any and all help.

Well I found the Final Cut Pro 4 'info.plist' (Made a copy of it first) and opened it and found 'AGP' and replaced it with and typed in 'PCI'.
(The 'info.plist' file opened up in some software called 'Omni Outliner', any idea what this is?)
Clicked on Final Cut Pro 4 and now it works!
No idea how it has worked but Im impressed and very pleased that it has! Thank again for that link.

  • New iMac w iSight won't record with iMovie

I got a new iMac G5 w a built in iSight, but I can't record video with the camera. Every time I try to record with iMovie, it doesn't recognize the built in camera and it always comes up as "no camera attached." How do I record video?

This is the same topic as another thread started today. Quicktime Pro does record from the built-in iSight as does EchoFX's USBVision. Several people have submitted to Apple an iMovieHD feature request to enable direct capture from the built-in iSight. Maybe Apple will offer that in a future iMovie update.

  • New iMac with iSight won't take image

Hello all, hope you can help.
At my place of work we use a standard image on all of our client Macs. I have used this same image to setup G3 iMacs, G3 Powermacs, G4 Powermacs, G4 Powerbooks and G5 iMacs. When one of our iMac G5s broke down we got a replacement which was the new 1.9ghz iMac with iSight. However when i image this machine, all i get is the apple for a few seconds and then the circle with the line through it.
When this problem happens, usually repairing permissions, resetting PRAM or those usual things tend to help, but not this time.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Since this is a new machine, just to rule out a problem with the computer itself, I'd try installing from the discs to see if you have trouble doing it that way.

  • Just bought a new iMac G5 (iSight) - what should I test/watch out for?

    Hi all,
I'm not a new Mac user, but I did just buy a brand new iMac G5 (too many new/untested things going on with the Intel Duo thingy). And I'd like some suggestions from anyone who is willing.
I've been reading a lot about the noisy fan and dead pixels problems. Besides testing for those two "major" problems, are there any other things I should test out before the return period expires?
So far, after taking 15 minutes to set up and get online (I love how Apple makes it so easy!), I'm liking the machine, a lot! I just turned Processor Performance to Highest to test out the heat/fan issue.
Thank you all for any suggestions. I'm trying to benefit from the collective experience and perhaps avoid any pitfalls before day 14 strikes.
    Vudoo

Hi, thanks for the suggestions so far!
I opted for the wired keyboard and mouse, knowing that I didn't want to deal with swapping out batteries and such. It's been fine so far ... if I really miss the convenience of wireless, I'll purchase them afterwards.
Currently, I have the default hardware: 250 GB HD, 512 MB RAM. I have an external firewire hard drive that I'll be using. And I figured that purchasing the 3rd party RAM will be cheaper than buying the ones from the Apple Retail/Online.
As for the processor, I'm trying to see if the fan will kick in after a day or two of operating at Highest. I haven't really ran it through rigorously yet. I'll probably set it back to Auto after a while.
Did you all experience any weird "hangs" or unresponsiveness? I had created a second account, and when I was transferring files between the internal and external hard drive, and using iPhoto on the second account, it froze up for 3 minutes, went back to normal, and then froze up again.
I had to just log out of the 2nd account, and let the copying complete. Maybe I need more RAM, since I'm so used to doing a bunch of tasks at once.
So please let me know if anyone else has any other suggestions. Thanks again!
Oh, and at first, I was so gosh darn disappointed that the built-in iSight couldn't be used with anything else accept iChat, and Photobooth! But then I did the updates to 10.4.4, and lo-and-behold now it's working within iMovie. Yeh!

  • ISight iMac capable of 1280x720 VGA output?

I just bought a 20" iSight iMac from Amazon with the $150 rebate. Great deal! Anyways, my plan is to hook the iMac into my home theater system. Is the iMac capable of supporting native 1280x720 output from its VGA port? Has anyone hooked up a 1280x720 projector or HDTV to their iMac to see what 16:9 resolution choices become available?

Just wanted to close the loop on this question that I posed a little while back. It definitely is possible and it definitely is working perfectly.
I have successfully integrated my new iMac G5 (iSight)into my home theater system. It is outputting 1280x720p as an extended desktop (2nd monitor) to my InFocus 7210 and it just looks wonderful.
The iMac is in my office which is adjacent to my home theater room. My whole house is wired with multiple Cat-5e and RG6 coax. I have overcome the mirroring limitation on the iMac by enabling desktop spanning with a firmware patch called "Screen Spanning Doctor." I have also enabled the 1280x720p HDTV resolution using DisplayConfigX for the second monitor.
Since the iMac is in another room... the VGA signal is being sent through Cat-5e using the Gefen VGA Extender. Digital optical audio out is converted to digital coax using M-Audio's CO2 Bidirectional Converter and transmitted via the in-wall RG-6 to my home theater receiver. FYI -- DD and DTS are supported via Apple's DVD Player...no lip-sync problems with my setup!
Finally, to control the iMac, I am using the Gyration Ultra Professional wireless keyboard and mouse, which is truly plug and play with the Mac.
So now I have Front Row and the entire Mac experience on my 11-foot diagonal (133") screen! It is truly awesome. I wasn't sure if it was all going to work, and I couldn't find many reports of anyone else doing anything similar (with the Cat-5 and coax transmission, etc). So hopefully this serves as a data point for anyone else out there who might be interested in setting up their iMac to be a part of their home theater experience.

  • Vga display connect to imac 2007

How do I connect my pc with vga output on my Imac from 2007?

    jshAtBCA wrote:
Definitely seems like miscommunication to me. I should have clarified...those specs that I quoted in my OP is directly off the tech specs on Apple's site.
Yes, it is clear where you got them from. They are accurate.
I have no means of interpreting those specs in a way that makes sense to me that matches reality. It seems completely bogus, but I can't help but believe that the text was vetted before it made to the web site. It probably means something; I just don't know what.
If you are questioning why or how you can hook up a 2nd monitor with a screen size bigger than the one inside the system...
It is built with multiple GPUs a dedicated GPU and the specific size it to handle existing Apple displays:
The Apple Cinema HD is a stunning, all-digital, 30-inch flat panel display with a 2560-by-1600-pixel resolution.
There is nothing shady or odd, rather well thought out.

  • IMovie 6.0.3 does not recognize built in iSight Camera on new iMac

New iMac, Intel, OS 10.5.4, QT 7.5.
Built in Camera works with Photo Booth, the new iMovie 7.1.3 and iChat.
iMovie HD 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 does not recognize the camera. Opening a new project results in a No Camera Connected error. I have tried selecting various options in the video format drop down when creating a new project. I have repaired permissions, tried it under various users, removed the imovie plist, reinstalled imovie (both 6.0.3 and 6.0.4) without success. All 10 of the new computers are exhibiting this problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

That is not an option that I can select on the imac's. On my iBook under 10.5.4 with iMovie HD 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 I can click on the triangle next to the camera icon and select the built in iSight camera. On the new iMacs that does not work. The built in iSight is not listed as an option.

  • My iMac G5 iSight has died.  New iMac on order.

My 5+ year old 20" iMac G5 iSight has died after a recent 3 hour power outage.  I have nothing.  It has acted a little stubborn with some restarts recently and I waited a little too long to replace.  I tore it down and replaced the PRAM battery but no luck, I am thinking it is a power supply issue.  I have a new iMac on order which should arrive next week.  I also should have a good Time Capsule backup.
I would like to remove the hard drive and put it an external firewire enclosure, reboot from that and restore my data and applications.  Will be going from a PPC iMac to an Intel.  Is this a valid option?  My main concern is my Quicken data and program.  I have been running Quicken 2006 and don't really want to upgrade from the reviews I have read.  Don't have the install disk for Quicken 2006 anymore.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jim

Removing the drive is an excellent idea, you should be able to mount your firewire external and use it on your new machine.
I'm not sure if you will be able to reboot from the FireWire external, it depends on the damage done by the hard shutdown (get yourself a USP, I use APC models, they're very good and have saved me many a time, I live in the country and the power is always going off), but it's likely that you can.
    Please post back with results,

  • I have a new Imac and connected a VGA projector

We have a new imac and have connected it to a VGA projector and have purchased a mini VGA convertor cable from the apple store, but now it changes the resolution once you change monitor in the system folder to mirrow. This is the only way we can get it to work. This there a problem with OS Lion.

You can disable it as a desktop in System Preferences > MIssion control > uncheck "Show Dashboard as a space".

  • Comparing focus of new iMac's internal iSight video

I have a new iMac. When I view iSight's live feed in, say, Photo Booth or iMovie, it seems like the focus is not very sharp.
I've tried the suggestions in Apple's tech note on iSight.
Here are a few shots (posted to Picasa) I took. This is with artificial light, as it is late at night:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lagouyn/UntitledAlbum?feat=directlink
Daytime/natural light results are, to me, similarly blurry.
Maybe I'm expecting too much? Could I ask new iMac users to check out the photos above and compare with your iSight video quality.
Could you also post examples of your built-in iSight image quality? (To capture an image, I used utilities/Grab and did Capture>Selection, then saved to disk and uploaded to Picasa.
    Thanks very much.
    -Allan

One added thought, -Allan, if you do not already know about the following.
(If you are an imaging pro who could be teaching me about this, please excuse my attempt to help.)
I can see that image quality for your viewers is important to you.
For uploads of images whose quality is particularly important to you, you may want consider using PNG format, TIFF format, or some other low/no compression image file format rather than the JPEG image format that you chose for your upload in this topic.
You noted the "dithered/pixelated quality" of the gif format sample image I had uploaded in another thread. While highly compressed GIF images certainly suffer more quality loss than moderately compressed JPGs, PNG or TIFF can reduce compression loss even further.
JPEG can offer control over how much compression you apply when saving your image. However, other file formats like PNG or TIFF can further reduce quality loss by not applying as much compression for those image where you consider quality to be critical in your viewed images.

    Help would be appreciated

    Hi,
    first of:
you are in the wrong Forum.
This is the Mac Mini Forum, whereas the iMac G5 Forum is here http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=134
Nonetheles, when you have booted the iMac from the OSX Leopard DVD and have choosen your language, you find the Disk Utility app in the Top Menu - Utilities.
Run Disk Utility from there, click on your new harddisk in the left pane and in the right pane click on the 'Partition' Tab.
Partition to your liking and make sure that to use the 'Option' button to set the partition map to be 'Apple Partition Map' (otherwise you can't boot from it).
    Hope it helps

  • What is the best CD and DVD to use with my new iMac Intel?

Guys, please help. I am not great on the computers and need a bit of help and advice. Just brought a brand new iMac Intel G5. This is to replace my older but much loved iMac G4, which is very simple to use. Have had nothing but trouble with the new one which was especially brought to copy CD's and DVD's and to have a good play with. After much head scratching have just been told by Apple help desk that the new intels may not like CD-R. These disks worked fine on my old Mac, brought a new pack (100). I can copy information and burn to these disks using Disk Utility. BUT they can only be read on the Intel iMac, not on my old mac or PC at work. This is only simple word and pdf files, nothing complicated. Copying and burning DVD's even more of a nightmare. What makes and formats do you recommend that I use? I can copy to DVD+R. Your advise would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Townie1978
