VGA Silencer AT 3

I'm dissapointed to say that the $40 VGA Silencer AT 3 does not fit on my MSI RX9800 Pro 128 MB. I had really high hopes of using it. The first thing I noticed when I received the package was the fact that it had a 3 pin connector instead of a two pin. I was overjoyed of the fact that I did not have to spend 30 minutes cutting off the plug. Then i removed my VGA Silencer Rev 3 to find out that the new one does not fit because there is an obejct in the way on the upper left corner.

Try this instead.

theres one specifically engineered for the X800, the rev 4 ati 4.
didnt realise they did so many models of it myself.

I'm really sorry but the Vantec Iceberg and the Silencer DON'T go together.
There is about 1.5mm !!! gap between the MSI chipset cooler and the "head" of the Silencer where the fan is situated.
I couldn't even put the smallers of fans between these 2.And i mean the smallest..You might even say i was lucky the Silencer fits!!!
    I have a 9800 Pro so i should know.
And to all those who say it fits, either you don't know and are guessing, or i challenge you to post a PIC with one installed.
And if that doesn't convince you, i will be forced to post a pic myself so you can show me your MAGIC.
And all that jus to keep poor folks from buyiing stuff they can't use, just from misinformation.

  • Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer + Zalman CNPS7000 = Fit?

I'm thinking about getting an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer for my Hercules 9800 Pro, but I was wondering if the back piece really fits between the AGP card and the Zalman CNPS7000. Right now my gfx has the special stock cooling on, a.k.a Hercules-style with copper RAM-sinks and a copper heatsink for both the front and the back (back of the card, that is) of the GPU. It's a pretty tight fit to get my SATA cable through them.
    Will it fit?
I'm also wondering if the VGA Silencer fits on my card? It does have non-stock cooling, but it's the same layout if you remove the heatsink and RAMsinks.

How about the Zalman ZMHPOPH80blablabla thing. Does it fit? It'd be nice to have to zalman coolers

  • Vga silencer (ati) fit on msi neo2 939

I am concerned about the clearance between the northbridge fan and my vga silencer (ati ver.1)  used currently on my ati 9800pro.  I have ordered the msi neo2 and think that it will barely fit but wondered if anyone else have noticed this.
    Thank you
    Kim

I had a little problem installing mine. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was going on. The H/L switch on the VGA Silenser was hitting one of the capasitors on the mobo and I couldn't push the card all the way in. I had to unbolt and reposition the switch. And like the others said there's not much room between the NB fan and the card, but it does fit. I think it would be chalanging trying to get to the AGP slot clip with that tight fit. Good luck!

  • Thermaltake crystal orb on K8N Neo chipset w/ VGA Silencer

    hi!
does anyone have a thermaltake crystal orb (http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/chipset/a1178.htm) on the nforce 3 250gb chipset and a radeon with a Arctic VGA Silencer on it - does the orb fit ?
I have one of these in another system i am thinking of using it to cool the nf3 chipset- the only problem being the fan on the VGA silencer comes pretty close to my current southbridge nf2 board -and by the looks of things its not in a very different location on the K8N Neo board.
    thanks!

Yes, you will need to get at the back of the MB to remove the MSI NB heatsink. AS5 is always good for what ails!

  • Core and vga silencer Q's

ok, i've been mooching about a few oc'n forums and seem to have found i need some clarity.
i have a 9800 pro and was thinking of flashing the bios to an xt if it can handle the clocks [haven't tried yet], the thing i'm unsure of is wither an r350 core will work with the new bios?  i've read people recomend it as fine and others that it'll cause ghosting.
i'm not sure of the core right now anyway, i'm planning to check whan i apply some new thermal grease [it's a his ice-q board, wan't some top grade compound].
if it turns out to just be an r350 will i be left with oc'n as my only realistic option?
also, i'm planning to mod my brothers 9600.  i've seen new vga silencers with less bulk, are the fan's bigger/more efficient?  what's the stats of these models, need to push as much power out of the little card as i can.
    cheers
    NIB

so an r350 is possibly able to handle  a 9800xt bios, but may not work?
i was under the impression it was out of the question with r350's.

  • Quiet cooling solutions on MSI's new RADEON X and GeForce 6 series VGA cards? Which is quietest?

    Hi.
I am, like many people are at the moment I'd imagine, trying to find the ideal graphics solution for running Doom 3. Say what you will about it, but I've played it, and I for one want to get my hands on it in a bad way.
The problem is that my PC doubles as a crude workstation for digital recording, and my condensor mics tend to pick up even very faint sounds. My current system configuration is: P4 C 3.2GHz, ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe mobo, 1GB DDR400 in dual channel, WD 3.6GB Raptor SATA HDD for OS and apps, and two 120GB Maxtor drives in RAID 1 for audio data storage, and the weak link as I call it, my gaming-inept Matrox Millenium 64MB. (Great for work...terrible for games, as expected). All this is running in the Antec Sonata case, and boy is it ever silent. I have to turn off my supposedly silent air filtration system across the room just to hear the PSU fan lol. It's been very good to me.
Doom 3 is the only game I intend to run on this system, simply because, call me crazy, but I am an old school Doom level editing addict, and I actualy like the tight narrow repetitive cooridor style gameplay it lets me enjoy. Furthermore, using editors feels alot like tinkering with my audio software, a feeling I very much savor.
I was going to go for a HIS Excalibur X800 IceQ II because they are supposedly extremely quiet, but darned if I can find one for sale anywhere on the planet. Lol.
So, I have decided to turn to MSI, who have never let me down with respect to near-silence in the past with their VGA cooling solutions.
    So my questions are:
    1) The NX6800 128MB (non-ultra, non-GT variety) is very quiet from what I hear, when the fan is set to the (default) lowest setting. Does the NX6800GT or Ultra feature the same cooling solution, and is it just as quiet, nearly as quiet, or noticeably louder than the plain variety?
    and
    2) I have heard in general that the new RADEON cards are much quieter than the GeForce 6 series cards. Does this hold true for MSI's X800 cards as well, and is the RX800 XT as quiet or quieter than the NX6800 or NX6800GT, etc. ?
Note that I care more about silence than performance. I would be perfectly happy running Doom 3 at 1024x768 at medium or even low settings, as long as I can keep the framerate smooth. I'm not very picky.
I would be truly grateful for anyone's assistance in this matter. Thanks very much in advance.

Thanks for the reply and the info.
Yes, they do run much quieter in 2D. But are there any decible readings anywhere on the net for the stock X800 PRO cooler (in 2d or otherwise)? I ask this because, let's face it, most reviewers tend to focus on the performance rather than the decible levels (as long as the noise level is tollerable to them, they usualy give scores without going into much detail about how loud or silent something is), and being quieter than the competing products doesn't neccesarily mean it's truly quiet.
Basicaly, by quiet, I mean so quiet that it would be hard to hear it unless I get closer than two feet to the tower, and even then, rather faint or even inaudible unless I actualy put my ear up to the tower. My mics are that sensitive. Is the X800 Pro that quiet with the stock reference cooler? I'm thinking it probably isn't, but I could be wrong. The Toxic Pro of course is more than quiet enough, but I have some concerns there.
I would prefer the X800 XT or, at the very least, the plain 6800 128MB, as they both (even the 128MB normal 6800) score higher consistently in Doom 3 benchmarks than the normal X800 Pro (not overclocked). While I'd prefer a 256MB card over a 128MB one, and Sapphire using the VGA Silencer on their Toxic Pro is a nice touch, that card overclocks the memory freq, which is a no-no with Doom 3 from what I've heard. Doom 3 doesn't like overclocked cards, as John carmack said, and that seems to be true given that I've heard lots of people complaining of artifacts with even moderately overclocked cards, be it the memory or core frequency. I could, of course, just not use the "A.P.E." functionality, and run it at stock X800 Pro speed, and with the silence on the Toxic Pro it would be great...but then why not just get the higher performing 128MB 6800 for roughly the same price or less?
    See my dilema? Lol.
Idealy, I'm hoping MSI's X800 XT or their GT or Ultra versions of the 6800 will have quiet cooling solutions. If they do, then it would save me alot of work making up my mind. No overclocking, guaranteed stability, total (or near total) silence, and guaranteed to handle Doom 3 (atleast fairly well... like I said, I'm not too picky), and I wouldn't feel short changed on performance either. As it stands now though, unless I can confirm whether or not they do, I'm going to have to settle for their standard (but extremely quiet) 6800 128MB.
Any further thoughts (anyone?) given the above considerations? Thanks again. I really appreciate it. Good idea on the Toxic Pro, just perhaps not ideal for my situation.

OK, I'll think about that and read some reviews. I've allready read good stuff about it, just haven't considdered it, cause I thought 'why go low-noise if you can go no-noise', but since this cooler draws air out of the case, other fans could possibly spin slower, so it may be a contestant.

The 9800 Pro doesn't have any temp reader, but with the fan @ 5v it got really hot to the touch, now days I'm using a potentiometer controlling all the fans in the computer, and surfing the web etc it doesn't really matter if the GPU get's a little hot.
That was innovative! Don't have the guts to do such a thing though. Since I haven't bought my stuff yet, I'll rather play safe and try other solutions.
BTW: Do you mind if a post a link to this modding on the sweclockers forum? It might help someone there.

  • Artic Silencer

Hi is there any problems attaching a artic vga silencer to a RX 9800 card . I cant help but notice that msi use a custom heatsink  lol . Can you mount a Artic silencer using the same pin set out as Msi use

according to arctic cooling the vga silencer fits on all boards that follow the ati guide for card layout, ati have the guide to allow manufacturers to have the most optimum layout for the card to work at it's best.  [nvidia do the same, hence all radeon/geforcefx cards tend to look the same]  basically, if your radeon looks like every other radeon from rival manufacturers you're in good water.
that cooler is a must for anyone planning to flash/overclock their card.

  • Adding A New Hard Drive

I've been thinking about adding a second hard drive.  The problem is that I'm not sure which configuration would best fit my needs.
Currently I have one 120GB Maxtor SATA drive which, after six months, is half full.  This leads me to conclude that eventually I'm going to fill it up.
Since I have only this one drive and no DVD writer, I don't have any good way of backing up my drive in case something fails.  I don't have any vital data, but I've spent a long time getting my settings perfect, and I don't want to lose them.
I also know that doing a RAID doesn't give me more space.  I know that RAID 0 basically uses two drives in parallel to double the storage efficiency, but if one drive fails, all the data on both is lost.  I also know that RAID 1 copies all changes to the second hard drive and thus also does not increase my overall storage space.
What are my other options?  If I buy another SATA drive, what ways do I have to copy my entire disk onto the new one?  How does XP handle installation on the new drive?  How do I switch between drives?  I was thinking that I could put all my large music and video files on the new drive and then optimize my old drive for my games.  This will still make it possible for me to listen to my music in Winamp while playing a game, right?
How do I install the new drive?  Do I have to go into my BIOS and configure something?  Here's what it says about my IDE setup (I don't know what IDE means either.)
    Primary IDE Master = DVD-ROM
Primary IDE Slave = CD - RW
    Secondary IDE Master = n/a
    Secondary IDE Slave = n/a
Third IDE Master = Maxtor HDD
    Third IDE Master = n/a
    etc.
What does Master/Slave mean as far as usage and performance goes?  Which SATA plug should I use for the new drive?
Sorry for the silly questions, I've never used a machine with more than one hard drive before.
EDIT:  What brand hard disk do you guys recommend?  I have in mind either Western Digital or Seagate.  I won't have any compatibility or performance issues from using two drives of different make and capacity, will I?

Hi.  I will try to help with some of your questions.  Its easy but time consuming to move/copy files from one hard drive to another.  Just drag the files/folders from one drive to the other one.  That moves them.  To copy them Select them and the select copy then go to the other drive and select paste.  With two hard drives its best to set them up as one for system files and apps (your c drive) and one for storage (your D drive).  Your optical drives then become e and f.  If your case you would leave your current drive as C and the new drive would become your d storage drive.  Moving your mp3s, vids, etc (i.e, non-system files or not apps), could take some hours, but that is usually no problem because you can do small numbers of files at a time or do it overnight.  By the way you never want to fill up your hard drive, especially your c drive.  Always leave 20+ percent free so you can get quick reading/writing to it.  Mp3's, vids, pix etc play just fine from your stoage drive and your games play great from the c drive.  And you can do both at the same time.
Masters and slaves have the same performance but that only applies to IDE drives.  There is no master/slave designation for SATA drives.
Backing up your system files can then be done on your storage drive, but as harib said you can back up the important system files to a CD.  Windows provides a backup utility for that.  You can also back them up to your storage drive if you want.
If you truly want backups of ALL of your files, including storage, is simply a matter of adding another drive and then copying all of the files to the new drive.  Hopefully you would never have both those two drives go bad at the same time.
Western Digital, Maxtor and Seagate are all good drives.  You first must decide if your new drive will be SATA or IDE.  You might just get another SATA drive for storage, but a lower cost IDE drive of similar capacity for your storage drive likely will be just as fast for for mp3s,etc.  SATA really helps on your system drive which you already have.
Installation of drives is a bit more complicated with SATA drives in the sytem but can be relatively easy to do once you decide what drive to get.  Don't base your purchase decision on installationo ease.
When you are about ready to install come back to the forum with specific details of what you want to install and someone will be happy to talk you through the process.
    Good luck!

  • Question About Northbridge fan

Even though on MSI's website the picture for the PFISR doesn't have a northbridge fan, mine does.  So, is there a reason why this thing is so bloody loud?  It sounds like a piece of plastic is just barely sticking up into the fans, creating a rattling sound.  If I turn my CPU fan speed down to a moderate speed, the NB fan is the loudest thing in my case, and I have five 80mm case fans and two PSU fans going full speed.
Does my motherboard have fan control for this fan?  Is it possible to turn the speed down some?  What if it I just remove the damned thing altogether?  I don't really see the point of having the fan there anyway, since both it and the heatsink are so small that they can't really be moving that much heat.  How hot does the northbridge usually get?  Is it possible to overclock the northbridge and see any performance gain?

    Thanks, that worked perfectly.
And I configured Speedfan to only run the NB fan at 75%, and it is now much quieter.

I've done quite a bit to my video card in the past few weeks:  replaced the stock ATI cooling with a VGA Silencer, flashed my Pro to XT status, and overclocked it mildly.
Just a few days ago I replaced the boxed CPU cooler with a Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition A1715 CPU Cooler.  Here's where I ran into my first snag:  It didn't reduce my temperatures much.  At idle my Prescott 2.8 ran at 48 or 49C with the box cooler, and runs exactly the same under load.  However, with the stock cooler under load it would get all the way up to 69-71, whereas with this new cooler it only reaches 65-67.  Still not what I was expecting with this cooler though.
I decided to delve into a bit of CPU overclocking.  I increased the FSB 1MHz at a time, testing after each increase.
Except, I didn't get very far.  I was using Call of Duty multiplayer to test, and I get visual errors starting at 203MHz.  They're thin vertical white lines that flash for a second and then disappear.  Also jagged polygons strewn throughout the screen, usually white or a pale color.  When I clock back down to 202MHz, they disappear.
Using CPU-Z I get these values for my RAM modules:
    http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ISBop/cpuz1.JPG
In case that picture doesn't work, they are:
    FSB:DRAM = 1:1
    CAS Latency = 3.0 clocks
RAS to CAS = 3 clocks
    RAS Precharge = 3 clocks
    Cycle Time = 3 clocks
Bank Cycle Time, DRAM Idle Timer, Total CAS, and Row To Column are all blank and greyed out.
I know that increasing the FSB also increases the memory frequency, so basically I'm trying to figure out if these artifacts are caused by the CPU or the memory.  My CPU cooler has manual fan control and when the system is under load I run the fan at high speed, and the temperatures aren't getting that high, so it doesn't seem like the CPU is the problem.
I looked around for specific information about my RAM modules' overclocking abilities, but found little.  I found the datasheet for my memory here(PDF format).  I was thinking that maybe tightening the timings would enable me to push up my FSB higher.  202 as a limit is a little disappointing, to say the least.
My BIOS settings are as follows:
    Performance Mode = Turbo(MAT)
    DOT = Disabled
    CPU Ratio Selection = Locked
    DRAM Frequency = 400
    Spread Spectrum = Enabled
    CPU Bus Clock = 202
    DDR Clock = 404
    AGP/PCI Clock = 66.66/33.33
    CPU Voltage = 1.3875
    DDR Voltage = 2.60
    AGP Voltage = 1.65V
    System Readings:
    System Temperature = 35C
    Vcore:
    3.3V = 3.184 - 3.248
    5.0V = 5.088 - 5.167
    12.0V = 12.081 - 12.408

By card voltage I assume you mean AGP voltage.  Its at 2.65V.  Vcore is at the lowest setting, 1.3875.  I tried 1.4000 and 1.4150 but neither affected the overclocking ability either way.  Still produced artifacts at 203.
How did you get to 220?  What happened when you went higher than that?

  • RX9800 extreme heat problems

I have an MSI RX9800 TD-128 (Radeon 9800) and the problem is the card gets EXTREMELY hot; by that I mean so hot I can barely touch the heatsink for more than a few seconds. There are no problems regarding stability or image quality (like rendering errors), though. So I'd like to know if temperatures that high are normal for this card (remember, I can barely touch the heatsink, it's that hot).
It is definitely not the result of an insufficiently ventilated case, since the results are the same even with the case open. Also the case is very well ventilated (4 fans), with the CPU (Pentium 4 3GHz) barely reaching 45 degrees centigrade during highest load and all metal parts inside the case, including the harddrive being virtually cold to the touch.

does that VGA silencer cool the ram chips too ? what about those on the back of the card ? as I said, there are no stability problems, even when overclocking, so the temperatures don't seem to be that much over the top; but it still seems waaay too hot for me.
btw, you can't touch the ram chips on this card (not that you'd want to; it would probably help if you wanted to remove your fingerprints permanently... ) because the heatsink covers them on the front and a simple heatsink (read: metal plate) on the back of the card.
