VGA to HDTV

I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 with a VGA output (no SVideo) I want to send video to my Panasonic HDTV.  I have a VGA to RCA/Svideo adapter.  A signal goes to the TV but it is all static.  Is it not possible to connect them or am I missing some software?

these cable doesn't work terribly well. I would suggest you get a lenovo usb2dvi dongle to get the video sent to the lcd.

  • IMac VGA to HDTV via component video?

I would like to connect an iMac Snow to a HDTV to display photos. Will it work to simply connect the two with a VGA-to-component video cable (price: about $20), or does the process require a VGA-to-component converter box (price: about $180-380)?
And if a converter is required, a brief explanation of why (in laymen's terms) would be appreciated.
iMac Snow   Mac OS X (10.3.6)
    iBook

I have a sharp LCD TV (LC-45GD5U) and I am trying to hook the TV up to my apple cube with a nVidea GeForce FX 5200. The TV has a DVI in, S-Video in, HD component in, and a normal component in. I have tried all of the connections with the TV alone and I can get nothing to work. However, I was able to get the TV to display if I had the TV on the DVI connection and the monitor on the VGA connection and only at a select few square resolutions. The whole point of having the TV connected is to have a bigger monitor so I consider it a waste that I have to have my smaller monitor connected as well and I am about out of ideas. If anybody has any ideas please let me know.

  • EMac vs. HDTV

I've been trying to get my eMac to display on a 2nd monitor (my HDTV) for a couple weeks now. I'm hoping that someone can lend me sme help here!
The HDTV has both S-Video and Component (Y,Pr,Pb) inputs and supports 480i, 480p, and 1080i. It has a 16:9 aspect ratio. I have other devices displaying 480p properly and it looks great!
I have hooked up the S-Video with the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter
That adapter works ok but displays only up to 854x480 (or 640x480, but it looks funny)
NEXT, I tried the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter
Since the HDTV doesn't have a VGA input, I used ATI's VGA to HDTV Adapter
Which seemed like a logical solution to me, but I cannot get the display to work properly. I can get the TV to display a very garbled image, all pink and scrambled, but nothing legible or usable.
I thought perhaps I need more control over the resolution and monitor expansion. So I installed Screen Spanning Doctor to enable the use of an extended dektop with my eMac. This works perfectly with the S-Video adapter or any 2nd monitor I hookup. Marvelous little program. Then I installed SwitchResX to setup custom resolutions. Whichalso works great with the S-Video adapter or any 2nd monitor I hookup.
SO, am I totally wrong in these attempts? Is there something silly that I'm missing? Will my Mac (or ANY Mac) be able to do this? Do I need a different adapter? Does the TV need a different input (like VGA or HDMI)? Please help! Thanks in advance!

    I agree with PT 100%.
You seem to be doing everything correct here. My
only advice is to rule out either the computer, the
adapters, or the HDTV as the culprit of the problem.
If you have another computer/laptop around I would
try it with whatever connections available and
confirm that the tv properly accepts s-video
connections from a computer and not just from a dvd
    player.
You say that with SSD you can use a second monitor so
the computer and adapters seem ok.
I did try the VGA>HDTV Adapter with another computer with the same luck. Even tried a Windows computer, no luck. I get a good display on a 2nd regular VGA monitor too.
I got to talk to ATI tech support and they said that Macs don't have a driver for HDTV support. I don't know how true that my or may not be. There are a few ATI cards for Mac, but they say nothing of HDTV connectivity.
I am finding bit of info about using Firewire as the hookup if you have a Tuner or some other external device between the Mac and the HDTV.
    Suggestions anyone?
    Thanks!

  • Mac Mini as a Media Server

I'm debating between Mac Mini and Apple TV. My wife and I are making some final decisions about which we want to go with. And she wants my decision quickly so she can pick up an Apple TV before Christmas if that's what we're deciding on. However, I'm seriously leaning towards saving up for a Mac Mini as a home media server, to buy sometime next year.
But I have several final questions I need clarity on. Hopefully someone here can answer all or even just a few of these questions. I've been to three Apple stores, and they're all technologically clueless, not to mention trained to avoid discussing Mac Mini as a media server product.
    1. Can I get a Mini DVI to HDTV adapter, so I can use HDTV with the Mac Mini?
    2. Can I upgrade the hard drive of a Mac Mini through an authorized service center without voiding an Apple TV warranty? Apple says they won't do it.
    3. Anything Apple TV’s software can do, I can do directly with Front Row and iTunes using the Mac Mini, right? My understanding is that Apple TV is essentially a modified Front Row.
    4. NetFlix cannot be streamed with Apple TV without hacking it with Boxee or something, correct? (Which, presumably, also voids the warranty?) I know Mac Mini can stream Netflix through a Microsoft Silverlight component.
    5. I know I can always use screen sharing with the Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro so that I can control the mini without having to connect a keyboard and mouse. But can I also use the television (a 42” widescreen plasma) as a monitor if I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected to the Mini? Does the OS actually adapt to the TV screen correctly? The last time I hooked up my MBP to a TV, it would cut off my menu bar, blow up the size of fonts, or I'd have to reduce the resolution significantly, making the OS appear incredibly small on the huge TV!
    6. To use the TV as a monitor, I assume I would need an adapter that converts the Mini DisplayPort to VGA or HDTV or something or another?
    7. Is there any way I can use a Mac Mini as a DVR for something playing on the television, or will I still need to get a DVR box from my cable company or Tivo?
    8. With Mac Mini, can I stream music from iTunes libraries on another computer? (An iMac PowerPC G5 running Tiger, and a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard; both have separate iTunes libraries as they each have an iPod or iPhone that syncs with them; the MBP/iPhone is mine, and the iMac/iPod my wife's.)
    9. If Apple ever gets around to building a Blu-Ray DVD player for their systems, I assume the DVD player in the Mini is not replaceable?
    10. Is it my imagination, or does the $999 Mac Mini not actually include a *built-in* DVD player??
    11. Is there any meaningful performance difference in audio/video playback between a Mini vs. an Apple TV? Better or worse for either? I’m particularly concerned with bad/choppy playback of both streamed movies (from Netflix or the iTunes Store), and locally stored movies (purchased from iTunes Store).
    12. I currently don’t have any speakers or sound systems, but will probably add one some day. Sound currently just plays through the relatively decent built-in speakers of the television. With a Mac Mini, will volume be controlled through the Mini, or through my television?
    13. Lastly, are there any remote control options for the Mac Mini? Or, at the least, an app I can put on my iPhone to control the Mac Mini? i.e. remote for DVD control (accessing the DVD menu, changing chapters, rewind/ffwd, and so on.)
Many, many thanks and happy holidays to all...
    Dan

Hi- I'll have a go at your list...
    1. Yes. Belkin sells one. There are cheaper alternatives that work just as well.
    2. If you order from Apple online store, they can bump up the gigs for you, and keep the warranty intact.
    3. Yes, and perhaps better, with programs like Plex and VLC.
    4. Correct, but the 'hack' is easily removed, with no one knowing that you actually did it, should you need to send it in for service.
    5. Absolutely! I've got my mini connected to a 46' Sony Bravia TV, and am using it to write this post right now. Running at a full 1080p, and loving it.
6.The mini comes with a mini-dvi to dvi adaptor. You will need to buy a DVI to HDMI cable (as I mentioned in #1 above, Belkin makes one, and you can find alternatives for around $5 on the net.
7.I believe you will need some extra gear for this. The Apple TV also cant do this. It IS possible with a mini, though, and I believe impossible with an Apple TV,
    8. Yes. I am also doing that at this very moment- With home sharing turned on, I am streaming my itunes library from the iMac G5 in the other room.
    9. Not without voiding your warranty.
10.That is correct. The server version of the Mac Mini does NOT have a superdrive.
    11. No choppiness on my 2.26 gHz Mini with 4gb of ram, running a full 1080p on 46' TV
    12. If you connect via optical digital, sound volume is controlled by the equipment you have connected to it. If you connect via analog, the Mini controls the volume.
13.Air Mouse Pro is the iPhone app you should look at. There are others, but that will allow you to use your iPhone to control a whole lot. There are more advanced options like Jaadu as well
    Good luck

  • New MacBook containsa form of digital copy protection - TRUE?

I was told that Apple's new MacBook lines includes a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Among the connectors supported by the technology are the Mini DisplayPort found on Apple's latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, in addition to others such as Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF), and Unified Display Interface (UDI).
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its DisplayPort-enabled MacBook lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content to devices that don't include support for HDCP.
Will this mean that if I purchase legitimate Video/Movies form Apple I will no longer be able to play them on Windows OS, PS3, XBox etc?, I hope not?

Right you are guys, thank you so much for responding!
I found out today that if HDCP was my problem I would still be able to mirror my desktop onto my TV, ie my samsung LN32A450, but I can not. The adaptor works on many other things as I mentioned above but not my TV.
I have been speaking with Samsung today and they have no information about the issue other then sending a technician to my house to have a look and if it's not the TV's fault then I will be charged for the service.
    So summary;
    Apple = no advice
    Samsung = no advice
    MDP-VGA company = apple = no advice
Therefore I must trial and error it.
I checked for updated firmware for the TV, placed the file onto a flash drive and inserted into my TV driver was up to date .: no results also no updates for the macbook.
I went to futureshop and tried running my macbook on a samsung 450 series (same as mine) and a 550 series (next step up) and same thing, no video on the TV.
I then moved to a toshiba and it worked instantly, as well when I checked with tech support on campus they brought me to the campus computer store down the hall and we hooked it up to the toshiba in there and it worked right a way.
macbook +MDP-VGA + PC computer monitor = works
    macbook +MDP-VGA + projector = works
    macbook +MDP-VGA + toshiba HDTV = works
    macbook MDP-VGA LG HDTV= doesn't work
    macbook +MDP-VGA + samsung HDTV = doesn't work
I have been trying really hard to figure this out with no resolve and it's been terrible, If you guys can figure out this riddle you are doing better then me, Samsung, and Apple combined.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
oh and sorry for the comment about waiting for 10.6, I meant it would be brutal to have to wait for the next OS or replace my macbook again just to get this to work.
It might just be your Samsung TV being compliant to HDCP but not DPCP (Display Port Content Protection) which your Toshiba TV might be.

  • Macbook to Component YPbPr?

    Hello everyone,
I have a black macbook 4,1. I am wanting to connect it to my Really old Mitsubishi tv that only has a YPbPr component connection for HDTV. I wondering how i need to set this up.
from what it looks like, i need to connect it by Mini-DVI to VGA and run it through a VGA to component converter like this
    http://sewelldirect.com/VGA-to-HDTV-Converter.asp
and obviously component to the television.
i know the audio is separate.
    is this the best setup?

Probably the resolution is switching from a mirrored resolution to some other resolution that the TV can't work from. Try this; shut down the MacBook. Cable up the TV to the MB and also the external keyboard and mouse. Hold down the Shift key on the external keyboard, hit the start button on the MacBook and immediately close the lid on the MB after you've hit the start button. Continue holding the Shift key down on the external keyboard until you see the grey screen with the spinning gear at which time you can release the Shift key. The MB should now finish starting up in Safe mode with only the external screen being on. Hopefully the screen will not be rolling.
Once the MB finishes booting, go into System Preferences/Displays and set the resolution to the optimal/desired resolution for your TV. Hopefully this choice will stick through subsequent restarts and also correct the issue of the rolling screen under the conditions in the scenario you described.

  • Tv Out Question

I'm trying to hook up to my tv, Got a good deal on a second hand 36". and i have the tv out cable to s-video cause the vid card isnt s-video, thats why i have the adapter, so when i have the cable hooked from the comp to the tv, How do i know that it is connected, Is it thru display properties, CCC, cause i dont see anything in them indicating that i'm connected to the tv, Also i have rebooted to see if it gets activated, I'm stuck. Update found my answer at Ati knowledge Base, This is quoted from their website, "737-22077: How to Enable TV Out on Radeon X1000 Series Products
The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):
                * Radeon X1000 series products

  • Mini DVI to VGA issues w/ LCD HDTV

I have looked all over and I can't find a solution.
I recently purchased an LCD HDTV, Insignia Brand which is a Best Buy Brand, and I bought a DVI cable to hook up to my Powerbook G4 using the Mini DVI to VGA cable. When I hook it up to my tv it works, but the screen on my Powerbook looks magnified as does the LCD TV. When I launch Safari or any other program it doesn't fit on my screen or the LCD TV and I have to resize it.
After I look at displays in system prefernces it says my max resolution is 1024 x 768.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Jeremy

Just guessing - the TV's "VGA" input is limited to 1024x768, which is possible although some "VGA" inputs will work higher. Do the instructions mention a limitation like this?
I think if you turn off mirroring on the Powerbook, at least the Powerbook screen will have normal resolution, and the TV 1024x768. The TV apparently scales up image to fill the screen unless using HDMI, where is leaves the extra 342 pixels blank on the sides (1366-1024). Perhaps the TV has a mode for adjusting how the TV handles lesser resolutions (stretch, dot-by-dot, etc)

  • DVI to HDMI or VGA to connect to HDTV

Hi I am researching buying a 40-42" LCD or plasma TV and I would like to be able to connect my IMac to the tv. I will mostly be using the TV to watch sports and to watch videos from my IMac.
    1. Will 1080p videos played from the IMac produce good 1080p picture on the tv? I have ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory.
    2. Or would I be better off just going with a 720p tv and playing 720p videos from the IMac?
    3. Go with a DVI to HDMI or DVI to VGA cable? I understand I'll need to get a Mini DVI to DVI adapter also.
    Thank you!

1 and 2. It should work with either a 720p or 1080p HDTV.
    3. Mini DVI to (regular) DVI to HDMI. That will keep the signal digital all the way. VGA is analog. There are cables that have DVI on one end and HDMI on the other end. There are several types of DVI connectors, so be sure to get the right one.
NOTE: HDMI carries audio but DVI does not, so you will still have to run audio from the iMac headphones jack to the HDTV audio input separately.

  • Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter Having Issues with My Samsung 40" HDTV

So I ordered the brand new 15" i7 Macbook Pro along with the Apple wireless magic mouse and wireless keyboard after having bought my HDTV (went on a bit of a spree) with the intention of using the TV as a monitor for couch surfing. But, upon hooking up the adapter to the TV, my macbook's screen flickered between that blue transitionary screen and it's desktop screen. It did this for a few minutes. I jiggled the cable thinking that there was a loose connection somewhere as that was the problem with my previous mini DVI to VGA adapter from Apple. I did a little research and it turns out that they released a firmware update in 2009 for such a problem. I downloaded the update and attempted to install it but it did not determine that there was even an adapter connected. So, I proceeded to call Apple, they man was very calming to talk to and make all of my problems seem to melt away, but there were no solutions reached. He thought that maybe my TV either had a problem or was incompatible with the adapter (incompatible with a VGA connection? can you get any more analoge that that?). So, here I am, the adapter seems not to have a problem with regular monitors but I am still experiencing intermittent disconnects from my TV. I still, superstitiously jiggle the connection whenever I have dropouts but that really doesn't seem to be the issue here (or at least I hope not because that could mean port issues with my new laptop). Any suggestions? I noticed, after changing some settings on my TV, in an attempt to remedy this, that the TV was displaying the picture funny, I turned the TV off and then on again and it fixed the problem. That being said, perhaps I just need to turn my TV completely off when I'm not using it, as I have been just letting it go into standby. Maybe it needs a restart every so often much like my computer. I don't currently have data to support that theory as I just recently tried turning it off, but, since then have not had dropouts.

You may have the screen refresh rate set higher than the TV is generally able to track reliably. It may be able to get there most times, but occasionally loses sync because it is out of its nominal range.
I suggest you sit down with the manual for the TV and find out what resolutions at what refresh rates it intends to support through VGA, and make sure your screen settings are near (or below) those limits.
