VGA Video display on a new Mac Air?

Dear Apple Techies ~
I would like to take VGA video from a video camera or other source, and show it full screen on my new (Sept 2013) Mac Air 13".
If this is possible, what software/adaptors do I need to make this happen?
Thank You for any assistance you may be able to provide

Allan,
I think that adapter only works as an output device, not an input adapter, such as the OP's post suggests.
The OP will need a video capture device to perform the task of taking VGA input and encoding to the Air.

  • New Mac Air and HP monitor.  The monitor only displays the background.  How Can I get both to display the same thing?

I have a new Mac Air and want to use my HP Monitor HPLP2475w to save $$.  I attached it to the Mac Air but all I get is the background of my laptop.  How do I get this to match or use in the dual mode.
    Thanks,

    Hi Jackie,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  How did you attach the Macbook Air to your HP Monitor?  What cable did you use?  The article below will explain how to setup the display.  Video Mirroring is the option that will allow you to see your computer's display on your HP.
OS X Yosemite: Connect a display
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19035?viewlocale=en_US
You can easily view the contents of your Mac on a display, like an Apple Thunderbolt Display, or on your TV.
    Connect an Apple Thunderbolt Display:
Plug the display’s cable directly into the Thunderbolt port  on your Mac.
Connect an Apple LED Cinema Display:
Plug the display’s cable directly into the Thunderbolt port  on your Mac.
Connect a TV or display with an HDMI connector:
Plug the cable directly into the HDMI port on your Mac. For more information about using a TV, see Use your TV as a display.
Connect a display with a VGA connector:
Use a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to connect the display to the Thunderbolt port  on your Mac.
Connect a display with a Mini DisplayPort:
Plug the display’s cable directly into the Mini Display port  on your Mac.
After you connect your Mac, the contents of your screen automatically appear on the display or TV.
If your display uses a video port that’s not available on your Mac, you may be able to use an adapter to connect your display. For example, If your Mac doesn’t include an HDMI port, you can use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI video adapter with the Thunderbolt port on your Mac.
OS X Yosemite: Connect multiple displays to your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19039
Set up the displays for video mirroring
Video mirroring shows the entire desktop on each connected display.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
Set both displays to the same resolution.
Click Arrangement, then select Mirror Displays.
    Enjoy your new Mac!

  • Can I daisy chain two Thunderbolt displays to the new MacBook Airs (July 2011)?

I have last year's MacBook Air -- probably the best Mac I've ever had and I've had a few. I looked at using multiple displays last year, but the reviews for the major 3rd-party solutions really demonstrate how little is possible.
I see Apple says you can double up on displays for the MacBook Pro (I have a pre-Thunderbolt one unfortunately), what about the new (July 2011) MacBook Airs?
    Anyone tried? Anyone know?
(I have a 30" Dell display, but it is, and always has been, very flakey when it comes to connecting to a Mac laptop).

You can thank Intel for that.
The sandy bridge chips all have integrated graphics, and before they were released -- they took nvidia to court claiming they didn't have a "license" to make GPU chipsets for the sandy bridge line.  Intel won, and consumers lost.
The solution most manufacturers are using for notebooks is graphics switching (nvidia optimus like technology) -- which basically uses a discreet GPU along side the intel integrated GPU, and switches between the two instantaenously based on the workload and \ or battery life -- this is how the macbook pro's with the ATI gpus work.
Since there isn't enough space physically inside a macbook air for a discreet GPU, and since no company in the world is allowed to make a shared GPU for intel's sandy bridge chipsets -- the only solution is to use the integrated graphics that is in the processors -- Intel HD 3000.  Intel basically has the monopoly here...there is no legal solution in the world another company can provide thanks to our wonderful court system
Wanna know the really sad part about the Intel HD 3000 GPU?  The Nvidia 320M (the GPU used in the previous model 2010 macbook air -- chip was released to the market in April of last year) actually out performs it in some benchmarks -- that's right, a 1+ year old shared gpu from nvidia outperforms Intel's 2011 integrated graphics.
    Intel ***** at graphics, period.
The only other solution I can think of is for you to get the "Echo Express" product from Sonnet:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/thunderbolt/index.html
It's basically an external bay that will allow you to put a PCIe GPU inside it, and it would then connect via thunderbolt to the macbook air.
You would then use the minidisplayport connectors on the PCIe GPU to connect to the apple displays -- I believe any modern ATI or Nvidia GPU can support up to 3 or 4 external displays.
Unfortunately, sonnet's bay is not released yet, and you'd also have to make sure the PCIe GPU you get supports both thunderbolt AND os x....so yeah, kind of slim pickens right now
    EDIT:
So apparently the macbook pros can daisy chain two thunderbolt displays -- Apple has a picture of it on their site:
    http://storeimages.apple.com/1867/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/MC914_AV 7?wid=1200&hei=1200&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0, 0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp
I just bought a new mac air too...I was gonna get a mbpro but they are just too expensive -- the one I configured was at around 3000$
Wanna know what's lame about using the thunderbolt display with the mac air?  So the new mac air has the magsafe connector on one side and the thunderbolt connector on the other -- they're not on the same side like the macbook pro is (see picture) -- so basically the cable is going to have to slack around the back of the macbook air -- who designed that?  Must have been smoking some good meth ;p

  • Iweb on the new mac air ??

    Hi all,
I'm going to buy the new mac AIR , but I knew that the application IWEB doesnt come with the new OSx LION.
Do you know if IWEB is available on the apple store and how much does it cost ?
Do you know if OSx LION will support IWEB?
Thanks a lot for your help

Here's some information on using iWeb after June 30th, 2012, when the MMe servers are taken off line:  iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published the site directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
Apple has announced that iLife is now an unsupported product and those iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.  However, the boxed iLife 11 at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.  Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought. Personally, if I already didn't have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

The new computer doesn't show anything but when I pull the USB flashdrive out, a message prompts me with an improper eject notice. Any ideas on why no icon (a disc) appears and how can I get it to?

Open Finder preferences, click on the General icon in the toolbar. Check the boxes for what you want displayed on the Desktop. Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar and do the same for what you want displayed in the sidebar.

  • I have moved my music to my new mac air but now it won't sync with my ipod or my iphone 4s

I have transferred mymusic to my new mac air from an acer laptop via an external hard drive and it's all there on the mac but now itunes won't sync with my ipod touch or my iphone 4s.
With the ipod it says 'iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. Could not connect to the device " It also doesn't show up at all in the devices section.
With the iphone it says there isn't enough space to sync even though I have experimented and unticked various things including photos which takes up a lot of space. It seems like it wants to sync with the empty space on the iphone (very small!) and not with the whole thing. I have tried various things suggested on this forum but have had no luck.

  • I'm trying to connect my 30" Cinema Display to my new Mac Pro along with a new Apple 23'" monitor.  The new Apple monitor is fine.  On the cinema monitor everything is blown up pretty large.  Any ideas on how to solve this?

    The 30" display needs a DUAL-LINK adapter.

  • Using An ASD LCD display with a new Mac Mini

I want to utilize a 17" Apple Studio Display with my new Mac Mini.
Does HDMI support the 35-pin Apple Display Connector (ADC)?
It would require an adapter with female 35-pin on one side and a male HDMI (DVI) on the other. The Apple DVI to ADC adapter doesn't work with the Mac Mini HDMI port.
If two adapters are needed they must have the correct gender connections.
    Thanks.

Your correct, you would need an Apple DVI to ADC adapter, And ether mini display port to DVI OR HDMI to DVI adapter. (just a question of witch port you want to use)
Apple DVI to ADC adapter when they were first released cost about 120; now they're kind of rare and harder to find. Online they can go for 200 dollars. so 120 to 200 dollars to make your display work; and displays don't last for ever they have parts that will break down. Older displays have a light bulb inside them; witch burn out just like all the other light bulbs in your house.
Also DVI to ADC adapters can some times give you blurry images and or text.
For 120 dollars you can buy a generic brand 19" LCD. That 19" LCD would have better contrast ratio, brightness, and refresh rate then the old 17" monitor. (and it would have a warranty) Or for 200 dollars you could buy 23" monitor.
