VHDX Support for W2008R2 Guest

I'm a little confused about the support for guest o/s's using the VHDx format. I have seen quotes on this forum saying that any supported guest o/s can be run using VHDx, yet when I create a virtual HD using W2012R2 Hyper-V, it says that W2012 is the
oldest o/s to support VHDx.
Currently, I have a pre-production environment running on a Hyper-V W2012R2 platform. All the guest VM's are (Gen 1) W2008R2 servers. Currently I am using the VHDx format for the boot and data disks on these VM's. Everything seems to be running OK now, but
I am concerned that if this is not a supported configuration that I may have trouble in the future.
Can someone clarify if my environment would be supported by Microsoft going forward, and if not, can I simply convert the existing VHDx volumes into VHD's using the Hyper-V Manager GUI?
Thanks!

...well surprise surprise!
After creating the above forum posts, I decided to submit my question to Microsoft Support via email. It took a few email exchanges until I was relatively confident that Microsoft fully understood my question. In the end they claim that the restriction of
VHDx to W2012 or newer systems is based upon the "host" o/s, NOT the "guest". The following is an excerpt from my last email to them:
"Given the fact that my environment is not taking advantage of any “advanced features” of the VHDx format and that it appears to be
working fine with my W2008R2 guests in my testing, will Microsoft support us if we run a production environment with W2008R2 guest VM’s using the VHDx format?"
And this is their reply:
"For what you saw, I’d like to explain that it is aimed at Hyper-V host while not Guest VM. That’s to say no matter which OS version has been installed on guest VM, as long as the hyper-v
host OS is windows server 2012 or later version, you can use VHDx format and take advantage of it. What’s more, for your environment, it is absolutely supported by Microsoft."

In the part about "for what you saw...", the Microsoft rep is refering to the "New Virtual Hard Disk Wizard" dialog box that warns "This format is not supported in operating systems earlier than Windows
2012." Although not clearly identified in this dialog box, the warning refers to the host o/s. (I really wish they would reword this warning in a service pack, etc.)
Once again, I thank everyone who has provided me with feedback on this topic. I hope this thread helps to clarify the issue for other IT professionals because previously I could not find a straight answer to this question

  • VHDX support for guest OS query

Hopefully someone can point me in the direction of an MS document that can answer this, or provide an answer here.
Is it an MS supported configuration to use the VHDX hard disk file format for a drive assigned to a 2008 R2 guest VM running on a server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host?
I've found info that states (correctly) that VHDX is only supported in server 2012 Hyper-V (at the hypervisor level) and that it isnt supported in 2008 R2 Hyper-V but nothing as to whether it is supported to use VHDX files with 2008 R2 guest VM's on 2012
    Hyper-V......
Fingers crossed someone can give me a definitive answer!
    Thanks
    Matt

The OS running the VM has know knowledge if a VHD, VHDX, VDI, VMDK, virtual block disk format or other file is backing its virtual disk.  And it really has no reason to know.
These virtual disk formats are only about the hypervisor and its storage layer.
They have absolutely zero impact on the OS in the VM.
They only mean anything to the hypervisor - and thus impact portability between hypervisors.
This is not documented in a clear way anyplace that I have ever seen.  But you are not the first to ask.

  • HTTP Probe support for ISE guest service

    Hi all,
I am currently trying out the guest feature of the ISE and I noticed that clients won't get probed via HTTP when accessing the guest portal and I am curious why? The WLC is currently running version 7.0.116.0 and thus is only able to support Local Web Authentication.
I configured the Layer 3 authentication of the SSID to use External Web Authentication with the link https://ISE:8443/guestportal/Login.action where ISE is the domain name of the appliance. I also ensured to use the MAC address as the Calling-Station-ID.
I successfully get to the portal, but when I check on the endpoint afterwards, no user agent is recorded.
Is there any way to instruct the ISE to fetch this information via local web auth?
    Thanks in advance!

  • I want to integrate SMS gateway to Cisco ISE 1.2 and my question is SMS notifications are supported for Guest self−registration

I want to integrate SMS gateway to Cisco ISE 1.2 and my question is
SMS notifications are supported for Guest self−registration Services ? or it should be done by Sponsor

I'm not sure I understand the question.  Do you want to log in to the Sponsor Portal using AD credentials?
Create an Identity Source Sequence using AD as an Authentication Source.  Go to Administration > Identity Management > Identity Source Sequences.  Either Edit or +Add a Sequence and choose from the Authentication Sources shown.
Then choose that Identity Source Sequence by going to Administration > Web Portal Management > Settings.  Double-click Sponsor from the Left Menu and click Authentication Source.  Choose the Identity Source Sequence.  Click Save.
    I hope this helps.

  • Support for 8-bit pseudocolor visuals on Solaris 10 u8 Virtualbox guest

    Hello,
I am running Solaris 10 u8 x86 as a Virtualbox (3.0.8) guest on a WinXP host with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500 vcard. I use JDS for the Solaris guest, and only 24-bit truecolor visuals are available for the desktop. I desperately need to run Xnest in 8-bit pseudocolor mode for an application. The video driver supplied with the Vbox Solaris guest additions has limited capability, and I think that until that driver is upgraded, I am out of luck. Does anyone have any different thoughts about that?
Is there a way to edit xorg.conf to get support for 8-bit pseudocolor overlay graphics? Wouldchanging the video driver in that file from vboxvideo to either VGA or VESA help? Any advice from an X expert would be GREATLY appreciated.
I've also tried to use svcadm to get the guest to open in 8-bit mode (default depth), but I think that the Vbox video driver (standard and VESA) only support 16- and 32-bit color modes. Is there some other way to get JDS or CDE in the guest to run in 8-bit color?
    Thanks.....

Regarding expense, I was referring to the dual-headed card you suggested, not Xming.ah. my bad. Though most cards nowadays have dual outputs.
Here is a Vbox report documenting the whole situation, including Sun's replies regarding DirectColor:

it looks like you guys were talking past each other.
    >
Note my outputs of xdpyinfo in there: no Pseudocolor visuals in 24-bit mode in the guest (the cause of my problem). My host NVIDIA card has dual DVI outputs, and I have two monitors; are you saying that I set one monitor in Windows to run in 8-bit, and then run Xming on that monitor, and then set up a remote display for my guest, and try and get the guest to display to that remote display? If so, that could be worth a try. If not, maybe I did not fully understand the idea from your first post. I'd rather not have to go out and buy a new dual-headed card unless absolutely necessary. The problem you have is that virtualbox needs a 8 bit display somewhere to send the output to. Send your end display is a windows display in 24 bit mode, it's a lose since windows won't (at least the last time I looked) allow an 8 bit window in a 24 bit desktop. You could try running the main windows display in 8 bit mode and then starting virtual box, but odds of things going in your favor is not great.
Your new idea of running a vnc server in 8-bit mode within Solaris is very interesting indeed. I am unfamiliar with vnc. I saw this page:
    http://www.softpanorama.org/Xwindows/VNC/vnc_on_solaris.shtml
It says that VNC comes with Solaris 10 u5, on the companion CD. I assume that u8 has it also.Somewhere along the line, sun began do bundle vnc as a part of solaris proper. It should be in /bin/vncserver.
I'll look into that. If you know of any other source of info on vnc, please let me know. Thank you VERY MUCH for the suggestion!!!Here's more or less what you should do:
    1) login to your virtual solaris box
    2) Start up a 8 bit vnc server by typing "vncserver -depth 8 :1"
    3) After the setup questions (if I remember, you need to at least set a password), you can connect to the vncserver by
typing "vncviewer :1" and entring the password.
You could also get a windows VNC viewer and connect to the solaris vnc server. This may render faster, since you aren't running the vncviewer in a virtual session.
    4) In the vnc viewer display (which may look funny because the default setup is usually a horriffic twm session), start your Xnest.
If you want cde, edit your .vnc/xstartup to look like:
    #!/bin/sh
    xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    xsetroot -solid grey
dtterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
    dtwm &
If you want jds, replace the dttterm/dtwm with gnome-panel.

  • VMWare support for guest OS

    Hello all,
please could anyone suggest what MAC OS are supported on VMWare guest OS.
i've checked the supported guest OS list in vmware fusion, they menitoned about 150 OS which include Snow Leapord but mac desktop OS is not specifically mentioned.
i am looking to have something similar
mac mini with vmware fusion installed and would like to have mac desktop OS as guest OS
please could anyone clarify if this is supported.
    regards
    ravi

    Hi,
currently no Mac OSX client version is supported as guest in any virtualization apps, not in VMWare nor in Parallels.
Only the OSX Snow Leopard Server is supported as guest.
Apple does not allow virtualization of OSX client version and VMWare and Parallels abide by that rule.

  • Airport Utility 6.0.0 breaks support for my Airport Express

Computer updated to Airport Utility 6.0 but that breaks support for my Airport Express.  When I try to access the Airport Express it tells me I have to download Airport Utility 5.6 - but I can't find that anywhere on the Apple sites to download!

My catch-all list of Airport 6.0 & Firmware 7.6.1 problems:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I've compiled a catch-all list of problems and changes with Airport Utility version 6.0 and FW 7.6.1. Some of the items may be relevant to this thread.
    THE PROBLEMS WITH AIRPORT UTILITY 6 AND FIRMWARE 7.6.1:
    Introduction: If you find AirPort Utility v6.0 too limiting or strange, you can ALSO install AirPort Utility v5.6, released alongside v6.0, to maintain all your previous capabilities. It works fine with both Airport g and n devices.
    PLEASE NOTE: According to Apple you must FIRST install Airport Utility v6.0 in order to access and install Firmware upgrade 7.6.1. Do that first. THEN install Airport Utility v5.6 and use it instead if you prefer. HOWEVER: Another user has informed me that they were able to use Airport Utility v5.6 to install Firmware v7.6.1 without any problems! This would mean anyone can avoid Airport Utility 6.0 entirely if they chose.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    1) According to Apple's documentation, Airport Utility version 6.0 is ONLY for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. It is NOT for 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you accidentally installed v6, you'll have to dig around in Apple - Support - Downloads for the previous relevant version for your devices and OS version. Here is the relevant page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1483
    2) The HELP for Airport Utility has been updated. When you first access it you may well be looking at the old Help. It is supposed to update itself spontaneously over the Internet. It took a couple minutes in my case. Be sure you are looking at the NEW Help before you start using it. One way to tell is that the list of help topics essentially doubles from what there used to be. Also, the very first topic in the NEW Help should read:
"Set up an AirPort device > Set up a new AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule"
    3) The HELP has some WRONG information. Here we go:
3a) There is NO "Enable Guest Network" setting. You CANNOT create a guest network or name it or give it any settings. Why this is still listed in Help, I have no idea. Why the setting is gone: This is most likely because the technology behind guest networks, WPS, has been thoroughly CRACKED in the wild. Google "WPS cracked" for lots of documentation of the situation. It won't be resolved soon.
3b) I can't find any 'Setup Assistant". Everything is now manual. This is not to say that there isn't a setup assistant that appears when you FIRST set up your Airport device. I don't know.
    4) After installing Airport Utility v6.0, there is no indication of the accompanying firmware update until you decide to run the new version. Even then, you have to click on the big icon of your Airport device and notice an 'Update' button about halfway down the popup window. You then have to assume that this button is telling you to update your firmware.
    5) After you update your Airport device's firmware, you may well discover an ERROR subwindow popping up inside Airport Utility that says:
"An error occurred while updating the firmware. -6721"
Don't panic! All you need to do is go into your Wi-Fi settings, either in your menubar or the Network preferences, and turn OFF Wi-Fi, then turn ON Wi-Fi again. This is part of a long standing bug in Lion's Wi-Fi with which I bet you are already familiar, certainly up through Lion version 10.7.2.
    6) Miscellaneous changes in Airport Utility 6:
6a) The keyboard command to manually change your Airport devices settings is GONE. You have to click the little 'Edit' button after clicking on the big icon for your device.
6b) There is no longer any summary window for your Airport device. You have to instead click on the big "Internet" icon for related data, then click on the big icon for your Airport device for local settings data.
6c) There is no longer any HELP advising users to EXPORT their settings. (The Help only talks about Import of settings). BE SURE TO EXPORT YOUR NEW SETTINGS! I did this immediately after both updates.
6d) MAC address filtering for Airport devices is GONE.
6e) All references to IPV6 anywhere are GONE. I have to assume the IPV6 settings are now entirely working and entirely automatic. Let's hope so.
6f) Signal and Noise data and graphs are GONE. Use Apple's Wi-Fi Diagnostics app instead. Apple have hidden it here in Lion:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/W-Fi Diagnostics
6g) In order to access the menu items in Airport Utility, you have to first click on the big icon for your Airport device.
--> No doubt there are other changes, oddities or bugs related to these changes. But this is what I came up with during a cursory strafing of the software.

  • Dell Equallogic SAN HIT Kit support for SAP in Linux 11.2

    Hello Everyone,
I would like to use an Equallogic SAN as storage in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.2. Is the Equallogic SAN supported in Linux when using the HIT Kit to provide MPIO and snapshot support? The article from thorsten.staerk describes Equallogic SAN + Linux + native iSCSI (no mention of the HIT Kit). I understand that there are restrictions on using third party kernel modules.
My understanding is that the Equallogic MPIO driver will provide a faster, more efficient, connection to the SAN along with additional features.

The Dell EqualLogic HIT/Linux MPIO software consists of two components:
    1. The EqualLogic Host Connection Manager daemon, ehcmd, which monitors the iSCSI session state and the configuration of the Linux server and PS Series group. Running in the background, the ehcmd daemon uses the Open-iSCSI management tool (iscsiadm) to add, remove, or modify iSCSI sessions to maintain an optimal number of iSCSI sessions. It also gathers information on the volume layout from the PS Series group.
    2. A loadable kernel module, dm-switch, which implements a new Device Mapper target to the multipath devices. Based on the volume layout on the array members, the dm-switch module routes each I/O to the optimal path within the PS Series group.

I'll take a moment to provide an update on the solution. There were some issues with the initial configuration of the in guest iSCSI volumes. If I had to start from scratch, I would run all the storage through VMware. The last round of software updates appears to have resolved a potentially serious issue with iSCSI disconnects. iSCSI has run perfectly for two months now. I'll consider the issue resolved once I have six months without any iSCSI issues.
One remaining issue is that LVM won't initialize properly without implementing a custom init script. The init script work-around is simple and it works.

  • LWA Support for Provisioning

    My Desired flow is:
    Guest SSID - Open Access.
If WebAuths as a Guest User, apply ACL-GUEST-ACCESS and stop
If webauth's as a user that is a member of AD group X, go to client provisioning portal.
I've tried using CWA, and I get "We are unable to determine access privileges in order to access the network. Please contact your administrator."
Since the 4400 and 2100 WLCs are supported for ISE using LWA only (no  CWA support), I think this is why.
The below log appears in the authentications screen: (not very helpful is it)
So I think I need to do a AuthZ rule resulting in a profile using webauth against the provisioning portal, not CWA? If so, I can't seem to wrap my head around a workable rule to match this. Any hints on making this work? All  the TrustSec 2.0 and 2.1 docs center around CWA only.

When you use LWA (Local Web Authentication) the NAD device (Switch, wireless lan controller, etc) is providing the Web Authentication Services. For example, on the WLC clients get redirected to the built-in WebAuth Guest page. As a result, the clients will never reach ISE for them to utilize the web services (web auth, device registration, provisioning etc). You will need to run version 7.2 and above on your WLC and use CWA. I hope this makes sense.
    Thank you for rating!

  • WLC 2500 and WCCP for Wireless Guest Users

    Hi there
I would like to redirect web traffic from WLANs on a Wireless LAN Controller 2500 to a proxy server in a remote site. I'm using ironport proxy server and Cisco 3560 Layer 3 switch. Basically current scenario is:
Wireless Guest Users get authenticated by web-auth through Access Point 3501 HREAP configured. Guest client gets an IP address on VLAN 100 in remote site. Once they connect to VLAN 100, I want all web traffic to be redirected to the proxy server. I know PAC file may be the easier solution however our guest clients want seamless solution for internet. I am not sure whether WCCP is supported for this.
You advice will be highly appreciated.

  • Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?

I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

I think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.
