VHS (C) settings in Elements 11

Hello
I have recently download a VHS (C) tape onto my PC with the free software that came with the hardware. The tape is saved as .mpg. There is a qualitative difference in the VHS tape when played via a VCR connected to my TV and the .mpg file when viewed through Windows Media Player. That is secondary, but the .mpg file was saved to the PC with the following settings:
MPEG2 format/codec with a resolution of 720x480 and an aspect ratio of 16.9. It is a UK camcorder tape so there are 25fps and a video bit rape of 8.0Mbps. The audio format has a MPA Codec and a audio sample rate of 48KHz. The audio channel is 2 and the bit rate is 192Kbps.
I attemped to emulate this in Elements 11 - that is the application I have bought - to see if I could obtain a similar quality. In Elements 11, I firstly went to File | New | Project and in 'Change Settings' I clicked on PAL (under Available Presets), the DV, then Standard 48KhZ (see _Settings screenshot).
I then added the movie. Then, to export it, I used the following settings (Settings4Elements screenshot).
The result, also an .mpg file and also played through Windows Media Player, is of a significantly lower quality. Most noticeable is that there are soldiers with trumpets (during a Disneyland parade) and, unlike the movie I can see when the VHS tape is played via a VCR connected to my TV, and unlike the finished movie from the free software that came with my VHS (C) tape hardware, I cannot hear the band AT ALL in the finished Elements 11 .mpg file. Moreover, the figures move a little like something out of the Keystone cops.
How may I improve the quality of the Elements 11 .mpg file, please?

Steve,
Since a fair number of people have posted here about this same issue, would it be fair to say that Elements 11 is more geared to the demands of camcorder (whatever their guise) owners who use Elements 11 to capture and edit their work, as opposed to those who may have boxes of old VHS tapes stored somewhere and wish to burn them to DVD?
Not really. PrE works perfectly fine with digitized analog footage, BUT will only do so directly from an A-D Bridge, like the GrassValley/Canopus, hooked up to the computer via FireWire. When using many other digitizing devices and cards, thre can be issues, and usually with the software that they use. Before my Canopus, I had a high-end Turtle Beach card, but had to use it's software, since it was PCIe, and not FireWire. I always ended up with OOS of 12 Frames, even though that software could capture to DV-AVI Type II files - just a common problem with the software, that comes with most of those devices/cards.
With the Canopus units, one just basically plugs in the composite cables from the VCR deck, to the Canopus, and then use the FireWire to connect to the computer. The beauty of that arrangement is that one can then Capture directly into PrE. The only limitation is that one does not have Device Control, since the VCR deck is hooked up via its composite cables, which are one-way. With but a bit of practice, one will soon learn to hold the VCR remote in one hand, and the mouse in the other - start Capture with the mouse, then hit Play on the remote. You will get a few blank Frames, but those are easily Trimmed out of the Clips.
Good luck, and if John T. did not link to it above, please see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3748554#3748554

  • Language settings in elements 10?

How do I change the language settings in elements 10? It started out in English the first time I used it but now it opens in Czech.  I put in the right region for English.  Please help, very frustrating.

Mac or windows? If mac, try this (it's for German but the same things should work for other language problems):

  • Problems capturing VHS video - help please (Elements 11)

I've tried without success trying to capture a VHS tape into Elements 11 for two hours now and really need some guidance please.
The hardware is a Win 7 64 bit desptop and my VCR player is connected to the PC via a Canopus ADVC55 firewire connection, through an S-video and L/R audio inputs. The VHS tape is a Japanese one whihc plays fine through the VCR when it is connected directly to my TV.
The capture process I'm trying to use is "DV Camcorder" but I keep getting an error message in the capture window stating that "Camera settings do not agree with project settings" and that the capture process may not work properly.
To solve this I've tried almost all the NTSC settings in the New Project dialogue box. Sometimes the Canopus isn't recognised, sometimes it is but I get the above error message but nothing gets captured.
I would have thought the correct project setting would be NTSC/DV/Standard 48kHz but i just get the error message. When I ticked the "force these settings for the project" box I got an immediate blue screen of death!
I'm obviously doing something - or several things - that aren't right. I'd be very grateful if somebody could put me straight. All over the internet are articles saying how easy this VHS to DVD transfer is!!
    TIA. John.

Thank you very much gentlemen for your help and advice. I've had a whale of a time this afternoon trying to make some sense of the problem.
I've downloaded WinDV and updated the Firewire drivers. I've checked Device Manager and there is nothing there about dropped frames or timcodes. I've also tried every combination of the Canopus dipswitches making sure that I reboot bewteen setting changes. I've tried 2 different VHS players and also swapped out the cables. I've also found an old Miglia capture device and tried that as well in case the problem lies with the Canopus.
    The conclusions so far:-
    1. Using WinDV with the Canopus set to NTSC I get a picture straight away no problem and audio works as well. BUT the pictures are in black & white not colour.
    2. The Canopus doesn't pass the video through to WinDV with the dipswitches set to PAL - the status light stays red.
    3. So going back to elements 11 I've tried both dipswitch settings. With PAL the Canopus doesn't pass the signal through as for WinDV.
    4. With Elements 11 with the dipswitch set to NTSC and the New Project settings at PAL/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the error message about "Camera settings and Project settings being different" and my PC hangs completely.
    5. With Elements 11 with the dipswitches set to NTSC and the New Project settings at NTSC/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the message as above but if I close it then the "record" button is inactive and no video is recorded.
    6. And those results are the same for both VHS players.
    7. With The Miglia device I get no picture or sound with either WinDV or Elements 11 no matter what type of VHS tape I try to record.
And that's as far as I've got.
Are there any other Project settings I should try? Can anybody help with the Black and White issue with WinDV?
I just want to get the VHS recorded via any piece of software now!
    Thanks again.

  • Where are audio settings in Elements 9 organizer

I use Phtoshop Elements 9 on a Mac running Snow Lion (10.6.8)  I am trying to boot up Supercollider, but I get a message that the localhost won't initialize because of a sample rate mismatch. The error notice shows only the Mac built in inputs and outputs and "Elements Organizer 9.0"  So the organizer is using sample rate 48000 and the system is running 44100.
How can I change the audio sample rate to match the system? I can't find the settings in the organizer preferences.
Can I somehow uninstall the Organizer which I don't like or use and continue to run Photoshop Elements 9?

I'm not at all sure what your problem is, but PSE organizer has nothing to do with other programs on your mac.
Uninstalling organizer is unwise and likely to destabilze the editor. If you can still return it, you could opt for the app store version instead, which doesn't include organizer, but I really don't think this has any bearing on your problem. I would try uninstalling PSE completely for the moment and see if your audio troubles go away. If not, then it's not that.
You could also try going to activity monitor and killing any organize processes you see there, but again I don't think it would make any difference.

  • "Audio Mix" volume settings premiere elements 10 not "sticking"

The "Audio Mix" volume settings that I set after adding a soundtrack to video in premiere elements 10 have stopped working and are no longer "sticky". I am running premiere elements on a Macbook pro with about 100GB free disc space and 8MB RAM. The volume settings adjusted using "Audio Mix" would previously "stick" as adjusted. I have not altered anything in how I adjust the volumes but "Audio Mix" has suddenly stopped functioning.  Both the soundtrack and main captured audio track maintain full volume despite adjustment. I have tried to restart the computer and reload the program to no avail.

    Correct.
I used to be able to adjust the volume with the Audio Mixer "on the fly" with the video playing and it would stay adjusted (as depicted in the tutorials). This no longer happens. The Mixer used to generate keyframes automatically. It no longer appears to generate keyframes and the volume remains at baseline for all the tracks.
I have not tried to manually set the volume level by dragging it and creating audio keyframes on it yet. I will try this but the videos are long with multiple fade ins and fade outs and this would likely be too laborious to accomplish.

  • Best Youtube upload settings? Elements 11

Hi, I uploaded a video to Youtube straight from elements 11. I put the pre settings as 1080p HD, and it uploaded successfully, but the first part of the video is really poor quality, even after changing the youtube video settings to 1080p. After about 45 seconds it goes back to better quality.  Does anyone know why it's done this? Or is it an issue with my computer? Here's the link to the video, I don't know if it goes from good to bad quality with anyone else...

oh ok that's great then, didn't want people watching my videos thinking "what, this girl shot her video with a potato?" :'D

  • Hi-8 / VHS ARCHIVE Settings?

    Hello -
    I archived a Hi-8 tape into FCPX.
Now when I play back the footage, on the bottom of the frame, it looks like it's playing just a tiny bit of the next frame. This happens on the entire tape.
But when I play it back on the camcorder's LCD screen, it looks fine ... none of that stuff on the bottom is showing.
    My setup:
    - MBP-RD
    - Canopus ADVC 110
    - Sony TRV99 (Hi-8 Camcorder; no Firewire)
The TRV99 is connected to the ADVC 110 (via S-Video and RCA (audio only) cables) which is connected via FW to the MBP-RD (via a FW to TB adapter).
    My questions are:
    - Why is this happening and what is the cause of this?
    - Is there a setting that I should be utilizing to help eliminate this?

    Hi Tom -
Thanks for the reply and insight.
Here's the screen shots of what I'm referring to.
The first one is the entire frame.
The second one is just the bottom of the (same) frame.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 and 'Save for Web' problem

    Hi everyone,
I have used Photoshop Elements 2 for some time with absolutely no problems. However when I try to use the save for the web option I get an 'export could not be completed due to a program error' message.
Nothing relevant is mentioned on Adobe's support site. After having gone through the usual 9 troubleshooting procedure I suspect that there is a problem with the 'Save for Web EL' plugin located in the PE 2 plugins folder. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way I can somehow find a functional plugin?
Thank you for reading this post.
    PowerBook G4 DVI 667   Mac OS 9.2.x

I don't use Photoshop elements myself, but from Photoshop CS it works fine. I use JPG compression and optimization. First of all - make sure the file format extensions are all available. Applications/adobe/photoshop elements/file formats AND ALSO Applications/adobe/photoshop elements/photoshop elements only/file formats (here I am assuming the paths are the same or similar to Photoshop). Also, check the extensions disabled folder (Control click on Photoshop and go to package contents). If it's none of these, I suggest you check the settings in Elements when trying to save and make sure you are not using an option that conflicts.
Also, check the Adobe forum. http://www.adobeforums.com
    Check for software upgrades also.
You do have enough hard drive space and RAM I assume. If you are using PS Elements and virtual memory is on, you may not have enough phsyical space to save the file (but not likely)
P.S. I see (after i wrote) that you are running 9.2.2 - so the paths will not be the same as if it was on OS X - but they will be similar.

  • I cannot get my pics on Elements 12 to upload to my revel Revel account.

Two weeks ago I upgraded from the trial version of Elements to the purchased Elements product and paid for a Revel subscription. Since then my pics stopped uploading to Revel. I have spent hours reading forums, been on two chats with adobe cust. service and I cannot get this problem solved.  According to customer service the settings in Elements are correct and the problem is with Revel. My Element program was signed in to Revel until 2 days ago even though pics were still not uploading. It was suggested that I sign out and sign back in but now that option is greyest out and I cannot select. I really need some technical help as it has been 2 weeks of trying to fix this problem. I have created mobile albums in Elements and the album covers exist in Revel--there are just not any pics I. The albums on Revel. I am ready to request a refund and find another way to back my photos up If I cannot get this resolved quickly. I have had problem after problem with both Elements and Revel. Please help!

    Morning rzayas59,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.
You can sign in to another iTunes Store account on your iOS device by following these steps.

  • How to set the  text size on Photoshop elements 8

    Am new at this!
Where are the settings for elements 8 ?   I have to enlarge my type to read.  the titles and instructions on the  photoshop elements are much too small.
I tried what I do with my compu......ctrl +......that doesn't work.  It probably is a simple thing but I can't find it.
    Please, I need help.
    thanks,

In general it’s not possible to change the UI display. But you could try the Windows settings.
Go to the control panel and check dpi scaling under Appearance or Display.
It’s not uncommon to see a setting of 125% or higher to improve screen readability but PSE9 requires a dpi of 96 or 100%
Whilst the Editor Menu will appear at 120% the Organizer Menu (and the advanced button in downloader) won’t. Sometimes the mouse or tool cursors are distorted.
Try a setting of 115% or 116% otherwise 100%. A common display resolution, notably for notebooks/laptops, and netbooks is 1024 x 768 but PSE9 requires a screen height of 800 for full functionality.
Unfortunately you may need to keep changeing back and forth. It's not perfect.

  • Photoshop Elements 4 crashing

Ok I have a new install of Photoshop Elements 4, I am running 10.4.11 on a MacBook 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo 2 with 2Gb of ram and a 250Gb hard drive. while working in Elements when I try random commands, I get the dialog box that Photoshop Elements quit unexpectedly. I reset the settings in Elements, but this did not help. Thanks for taking the time to help.
    Kevin

No, nobody from the adobe forum sent you here. I don't know where you were but I can find no posts from you or unresolved posts on this subject in the past week or two at the adobe PE forum. If you were at elements village, that has nothing at all to do with adobe.
Now then. First thing to do: go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist
    PE 4.0 preferences folder
    PE 4.0 paths folder
    Opera preferences
    repair permissions and try again
If that doesn't do it, go to applications>PE 4>plug-ins>import/export and delete the adobe twain driver.
I am assuming that you have installed the patch to PE 4.01, of course.

  • Anyway to set ProPhotoRGB as output space in ACR hosted by Elements?

Is there anyway to set ProPhoto RGB as the output space in ACR 4.4.1 hosted by Ps Elements 6 on a Windows Vista Home Premium laptop?
The images will be properly corrected using the full version of Photoshop 10.0.1 on my Mac, but I'm used to seeing the ACR preview window with ProPhoto RGB 16-bit set as the output space.
Or do the limitations of Ps Elements cripple ACR in this regard too?

    > I'm assuming the choices of sRGB and AdobeRGB in Element's ACR is strictly output and working space. Regardless of which is chosen the preview stays the same in ACR. Correct?
    > Does Elements ACR embed the sRGB or AdobeRGB working space after saving to tiff and can you save in 16bit tiff as well?
The way things work in Elements is that you have four choices for colour management:
None - This means any file you open will have any embedded profile ignored, the working space is effectively the same as your monitor, when you save a file any existing profile is removed.
Optimize for Web - This sets the working space to sRGB, so any file without a profile will be edited in that space. When you save such a file you can embed sRGB as it's profile on saving.
Optimize for Print - This sets the working space to Adobe RGB, and then behaves as for optimze for web but using Adobe RGB.
Let me choose - For files with no embedded profile, you can choose between sRGB or Adobe RGB and that will be the working space profile for that file. You can then save it with that profile.
For the latter three options, Elemenets always preserves the embedded profile if a file has one. So, if you have Elements set to optimze for web, but open a file with Adobe RGB, it will use Adobe RGB. Unlike full PS, you can't force sRGB working space on an Adobe RGB file. It will also preserve ProPhoto RGB too it seems, even though it's not a profile you can use in Elements to create files with.
Elements also provides the ability to convert (not assign) between sRGB and Adobe RGB. You can effectively do an assign by saving a file without the embedded profile, and then setting Elements colour settings to let me choose and then selecting the profile you wanted at that point...
As for ACR, I believe the preview works no differently than it does in full PS other than there is no option to select the output space in the ACR window (along with other restricted options). This is effectively set by the Elements color settings above, so you will get sRGB for optimse for web or Adobe RGB for optimise for print. When it's set to let me choose, I think it defaults to using whatever your camera's default colour space is set to as this is still in the EXIF info, but am not sure there. ACR does let you specify 16 bit output though, so depending on the base colour settings in Elements you can create a 16-bit AdobeRGB TIFF file, save it with the correct profile, and also easily create a correct 8-bit sRGB JPEG from it for web use.
So, no, Elements is not as flexible as full PS, but, if you want to stick with Adobe RGB and sRGB, then I reckon it's all there and it's not quite as pathetic as Ramon says. If you want ProPhoto RGB, then to be fair, Elements is probably not for you anyway.

  • Printing Problems with Elements 11

I have just started with Elements 11. At first it printed ok. but when I tried to set it up with Elements to control the printer ( Epson SX400 ) I keep getting a message saying that ICC Profile is invalid, and the program will not let me print at all. My computer O/S is Windows 7, 64 bit.  the Printer driver is one supplied by Epson EU to run the O/S.
I have tried returning to Printer controls settings, this has not worked. I have tried to print on a different printer (Brother HL-2250DN Laser Printer) this will not print either.
I have tried to print on my old Serif PhotoPlus program this is OK. So the problem is in my settings for Elements 11,
Do I Need to Reinstall the programme
    Andy H

I would explain you the steps you need to follow if you are giving control to Photoshop Elements to manages color.
Step 1- Select your printer and then Click More Options at the bottom left of the Print window.
Step 2- No click on Color Management tab.
Step 3- Now from "Color Handling" drop down select Photoshop Elements Manages color. As you select this option "Printer Profile" drop down will become enable.
Step 4- If Image Space is sRGB then select sRGB profile from Printer Profile drop down else select Adobe RGB.
Step 5- Click On Printer Preferences button. It will open your printer's preferences dialog.
step 6- Now click on "Main" tab and then click Advanced button.
step 7- Now under "Color Management" section please select No Color Management here.
step 8- Click OK and come back to main Print dialog of Photoshop Elements.  Now click Print.
Note -If you choose Photoshop Elements manages color, it is very important that you disable color management in your printer driver.Letting the application and the printer driver simultaneously manage colors during printing results in unpredictable color.
Try with above written steps I hope it would help.
    Cheers !!!

  • Elements 11 - not responding

I'm constantly receiving messages that Photoshop Elements is running, but not responding - prompting me to either wait for the program to respond or shut down.  I've called my technician and verified that I've got enough free disk space and video card reader is good.  Is it possible I need updates that I'm unaware of?

Try resetting the PSE preferences by
       1. Close Elements.
       2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Edit.
       3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.
    OR
GO to Edit->Preferences and you will see Reset Preferences on next launch
Click this button to ensure that all product preferences are reset to default settings when Elements Editor is restarted next. Available at Preferences > General.
    OR
Try with normal JPEG image also.
