VHS import (via Sony DVcam), some tapes display video only in fast forward

I, like many others, have been copying my VHS tapes to iMovie. This has been going fine, but I have part of one tape and all of another where no video displays when the tape is played on the VCR, UNLESS that is, one is fast forwarding or reversing, when it looks fine (though a bit faster than desirable for capture).
My old VCR died, and I picked up a nice used Panasonic at Goodwill (couldn't even find one at the local electronic store except as dedicated VHS to DVD). It seems to work fine (much better than my old one in fact).
Any idea on what my problem is? My old VHS camera was an Olympus that could also record SVHS (I think that was what the higher-quality mode was called). Is that something that requires an SVHS VCR to play? I did use to know this stuff, but it's lost in the distant-past memory cells.

It sounds as if the questionable tapes may have been recorded in LP (Long Play) mode. This gives a much narrower recording band on the tape, which may not match up with other tape decks unless the head alignment exactly matches the original.
Maybe your new, er 'used', Panasonic doesn't have an LP playback speed, or - as it's a 'used' machine - the heads aren't quite as properly aligned as they should be ..or perhaps that was the case with your old VHS camera.
S-VHS video won't play back at all on normal VHS equipment - although the sound should be OK if it was recorded on the normal lower-quality 'longitudinal' track (..S-VHS also embeds higher quality audio on an audio track within the video, just like digital video).
So yes; S-VHS does need an S-VHS machine to play it.
LP recordings need an LP-capable VHS player (..most are..) but tolerances between the original equipment, on which the tape was recorded, and the playback device need to be fairly tight.
Have you tried adjusting the Tracking control? ..or try playing the tapes on a JVC player which has a 'BEST' facility, and which tries to adjust the tracking for you.
Otherwise, as Bengt suggests, try to play the tapes on various other machines till you find one which gives a decent picture!

    I cannot get the timeline to display video. This happens randomly when insert new clips into the timeline or change the length of current clips in the timeline. I'm working w/ .mp4 video and about half of the footage is SD, but I'm working on an 1080p timeline since I will have 1080p footage. Any thoughts? I'm working w/ a discrete graphics chip so I don't think this is the problem. The canvas works great on my other projects, it's just this one project. I'm lead to believe its the SD, but Ive tried switch the project to an SD timeline and it didn't solve the problem.

  • Mpv stopped displaying video, only plays audio

    Suddenly mpv stopped opening my video files, it didn't open its screen and just played the audio, forcing me to kill the process. I ran mpv on a terminal and got the following output:

    That never happened and I didn't change anything on my config file, here's the `vo` option:

    I thought the error happened because I had tried to fix my HDMI audio issues and set a kernel parameter (radeon.audio=1), but upon its removal the issues on mpv persisted. Video ran fine on mplayer, though, but I never made a config file for it.
    Anyone has a clue what's wrong?

  • Trouble importing from Sony HDV HC1, I link already turned to off

    I have had success importing some of my tapes to imovie, but on some tapes imovie will only control the camcorder but will not play it on the computer screen or import the video. It just rewinds it, starts and then immediately stops. Sony support says it is a problem with the tape. I think I may have changed a setting on the tape halfway through recording it.The tape plays fine on the camcorder. Any ideas anyone?

    c. Camera set in it's menu to send out as DV

  • Can't see some Business Rules after running the Import via LCM

    I am trying to migrate our Business Rules down from Prod to Dev to get them back in sync. Here is the steps I have run:
    Export ALL Business Rules and Sequences from Prod via LCM
    I confirmed the export directory contains an .xml file for EACH Rule.
    copied the export directory down to Dev Shared Services server
    Turned on DEBUG for Shared Services
    Deleted ALL Business Rules and Sequences from Dev EAS BR repository
    I confirmed that ALL BUsiness Rules are listed and checked in LCM Import.
    run the Import from Dev Shared Services via LCM
    I get a Completed successfully message. No Errors.
    I Refresh Rules in Dev EAS and I only see 25% of the Business Rules listed.
    I have tried to Stop/Restart the EAS services and still nothing.
    I confirmed that the ID I am using to Export / Import has access on each Business Rule either directly or via a Group that has access.
    Any thoughts??

    I was really trying to get it done via LCM since I have all other migrations being done there. but I ended up taking your advice and doing it the old fashion way via EAS export.
    To answer your questions:
    We are on 11.1.1.3
    I did not see any problems in the Services logs for EAS. Nothing that stood out.
    We are migratiing 66 Rules and 15 Sequences.
    We are using Weblogic instead of Tomcat.
    Even though I have a workaround for the issue I am still interested in understanding why some of them did not import via LCM. You mentioned that you might consider adjusting some config settings. What settings would you recommend looking at?

  • Importing a movie works with Sony digital 8 tape but no other tape will import

    I can import movies from Sony Digital 8 tapes, but any other 8mm metal tapes will not import. Any Ideas why and how can I import other tapes. It shows on the playback screen but no data from device.

    Try importing your iMovie project into FCP as follows:
    In FCP:
    1. > File >Open
    2. Select the iMovie project you want to open
    (the FCP Browser should then show the individual iMovie clips)
    3. double-click the iMovie clips to open them in the FCP timeline
    4. >File >Save Project As (to save your imported iMovie project as a FCP project)
    5. Render the clips: because iMovie uses a different DV encoding method to FCP, so rendering iMovie media in FCP converts them to the FCP-compatible format.

  • Cannot import from Sony DSR-25 DVCAM player

    Final Cut pro will not import from Sony DSR-25 DVCam rocorder/player. Video apperars in the imprort window and plays but nothing in the event window.

    A lot of problems with the Tunderbolt to FW adapters for DV ca[ture and with the rocketfish cables.

  • Some iPhone 4S photos imported via Photo Stream are black

    I'm seeing a whole bunch of iPhone 4S photos imported via Photo Stream as black images in latest iPhoto '11.  When I look at the original file in finder, it is intact, however the modified one is just a black image (which is what shows up in iPhoto).
    This is very concerning.  I'm now manually re-importing all my 4S photos.
    Strangely, the same photos that appear black in iPhoto Photo Stream are fine on my iPad and iPhone Photo Stream view.
    So it seems that iPhoto is breaking them when it imports them.

    There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
    Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
    Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Importing of Analog Hi-8 tape and then editing.  How?

    I'm really confused by video editing. My son is turning 16 in two weeks. I want to create a movie of scenes from him growing up. Everything is stored on anaglog hi-8 video tape. Here's my questions:
    1. I have an external dvd burner. I can hook my Sony camera up via RCA components (it doesn't have firewire) and burn a dvd of each tape. If I do that, will the dvd be something I can edit in iMovie 09?
    2. Elgato has a video converter box which allows me to plug my camera directly into my Mac. Would that be a better (but not cheaper) solution?
    3. How much disk space is required to import a 2 hour movie on tape?
    4. Will iMovie work well to take selected segments from the tapes, DVD's, or direct imports or do I need something more powerful.

    This will work, but you are adding another generation of data loss to the process. iMovie will not directly edit DVDs, which are encoded in MPEG2 format. So after burning the DVD, you have to convert the MPEG2 files on the DVD to a format that iMovie can edit, like DV or Apple Intermediate Codec. You could do this by using MPEG Streamclip (free) and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2Component ($20)

    I have an EyeTV Hybrid from ElGato, and it works well. ElGato EyeTV allows you to export the file to iMovie in either DV or AIC as appropriate.
    Another way would be to get a digital 8 camera from EBAY. Most digital 8 cameras will convert hi 8 to DV, and you can import via firewire. Check this before you buy to make sure it has the conversion feature.

    It will take about 8GB to import into EyeTV. When you export from EyeTV to iMovie it will get bigger.

    iMovie does well at this. I have imported events from VHS, hi8, 8MM film (via VHS), DV, and AVCHD and combined them into one movie.

    Can someone recommend a Sony mini dv camera that will work with iMovie '11 ?  I have an old Sony DCR-TRV17 and iMovie does not recognize the camera when connected.

    Yes. My Sony DCR-TRV20E is the PAL model (hence the E in the model number). I believe there was also an NTSC model. I purchased mine in December 2000, so over 12 years old now, but still works fine. Although, as I mentioned earlier, I rarely use this camcorder now - really only for importing old tapes.
    Just on that note, I will shortly be doing an import of a wedding I shot, edited and archived back to miniDV tape in 2002 (using iMovie version 2). The project was originally copied to VHS tape. The bride would now like some copies on DVD, so I'm going to add chapter markers and author the DVD in iDVD (and perhaps do some other tidy ups). I'll also provide some USB memory sticks.
    In a few days, I will report back as to how this works out. I will be importing to iMovie HD 6, not iMovie '11, in this particular instance. With iMovie '11, importing archived edited tapes causes some of the media to be out of sequence, including titles and transitions and some clips. They seem to import in chronological order rather than edited order. I'm pretty sure that iMovie HD 6 imports in edited order.
    Regarding the problem you are having with importing, can you provide some information about your method. For example:
    is the camera connected to power rather than being just battery powered;
    what cable and/or adaptor are you using;
    has the camera worked with other versions of iMovie;
    have you set the camera to VCR (playback) mode;
    have you tried connecting then starting things in a different sequence;
    have you waited long enough before aborting the import process (it sometimes takes a while before iMovie recognizes the camera)?
    Answers to all these things, and any other information you can provide, may help us to provide a solution.
    So don't look at buying a new camcorder just yet - hang in there!

  • Strange digital artifacts at the end of each song importing via iTunes

    I've tried a few variations on archive searches and wasn't able to find an answer to this: In ripping some of my CD's into iTunes (either Apple Lossless or WAV) I've been getting some very odd, brief digital artifacts at the end of each songs on a CD. This sounds like two or three seconds of an audio tape on fast forward. It only seems to happen on new releases (I cannot think of any older CD's it's occurred on). I just got a copy of Mary Gauthier's new album (great CD by the way) and it happened on that one, for example. I tried ripping it multiple times in Apple Lossless, and WAV (always in iTunes) and each and every time it created files where this strange artifact existed at the end of every song. I play the CD I ripped the files from and the artifact is not there. I have several CD's, most of them recent releases over the past five years, that do the exact same thing. Otherwise everything else functions perfectly an the bulk of my 700+ CD library has imported without a hiccup. Is this some kind of anti-piracy technology...or do I simply have some setting off in my itunes preferences (Error-Correction is on, WAV or Apple Lossless is always set to Automatic, have experimented with importing to startup disk and external disk-same results). The artifacts seem to always sound the same too...they never vary, except that they sound different from song-to-song, but the same if say, the first cut is played over again. They are always 2 seconds plus or minus, and always at the end of a cut (the final 2 seconds or so). They do transfer verbatim to my iPod, and also play via iTunes through my stereo.
    Anyone have any clues what this might be?

    As a follow up, I went to the Genius Bar for a bowl of Mensa Stew, but only got some tepid broth. Here's what transpired:
    The girl I was speaking with suggested that the artifact was the software misinterpreting information between the cuts. It was only a theory. She had not heard of any other incidents to relay. First she suggested I rip as MP3's. I explained that wasn't an option for me. She listened to a few cuts on a CD I'd brought with, or rather the ends of the cuts and confirmed there was a problem with the rip. She went through my settings, and asked if I'd tried it with Error Correction turned off. I explained I hadn't and that I preferred to use it. She suggested attempting to rip one of the cuts with it turned off just to see how it did. We did that and no artifact was there. So her 'solution' was to either leave error-correction turned off always, or turn it off for those problem CD's that produce the artifact (I'd estimate about 5% do on my laptop). This did not explain why it was doing it, nor why my g5 tower, which is running a carbon-copied system with all the same iTunes settings, does not produce the artifact with Error-Correction turned on.
    I'd be interested to hear of anyone else who's been having problems importing hi-rez files in iTunes. I know of at least one other instance where the artifact produced (on a MacBook) is dis-similar to mine in that it takes the form of brief electronic beeps moving from channel to channel.
    Anyone else?

  • Importing directly from Dvcam didn't work

    I have a few cameras that go to a switcher, which is plugged into a Sony Dvcam (records to tapes).  I stopped using the tapes a while ago and recorded live to iMovie with Fire wire. 
    I recently got a new MacBook Pro with Final Cut Pro, so I connected the Dvcam to it with the fire wire and a thunder bolt adapter.
    Anyway, Final Cut Pro did not record directly from the Dvcam.  On iMovie, I would just click Import and it would record.  But I clicked import on Final Cut pro, and it looked like it was importing.  After an hour, I clicked Stop Importing and I realized that nothing was recorded and I lost everything.
    After messing with the Dvcam and FCP, I noticed that it does import if I have a tape playing.  But it doesn't import if there's no tape??? I don't get it, why can iMovie do this but not FCP?
    Another thing I notice is that FCP gives control to the Dvcam and vice versa, which I don't want.  For example, if I click import while there's a tape in it, it will play whatever was on the tape and starts importing that.  Or if I stop recording on the tape, the importing will end.  Overall though, I don't even want to use tapes if I don't have to.  But I use the Dvcam because I have the Fire wire output (which I now connect with the thunder bolt adapter).

    So is there any way I can still record live from dvcam to FCP?
    I would just record in iMovie and edit in FCP, but importing dv iMovie projects = no audio in FCP apparently.

  • Can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6

    I can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6.01 HD. Am using Macbook Pro, 2 gig of RAM. This is my first time NOT using tape. I can copy the files off the memory card onto an external drive (to free up the card for pro crew's next day's shoot), but can't import either to FCP. Do I need to convert the files in some way before FCP can read them? Need to fix this problem fast as the crew are off to Nepal for 2 week shoot.

    First, I'm assuming that you're referring to the XDCAM EX. You'll need to install the FCP 6.0.2 upgrade, which contains the XDCAM EX codecs.
    Second, You'll need to install the PDZK-P1 Transfer Application, and use that to import your EX clips into FCP. I just noticed that there is a new version available, 2.5.1 which is labeled specifically for Tiger/Leopard. I haven't tested this version yet, and will report back on any stability issues. We're currently running version 2.1.1, without many issues.

  • Import miniDV (Sony DCR-TRV33E) leads to artifacts in the video

    Hi,
    I hope there is someone who might help solving my issue.
    I am using
    Mac OS X
    Premiere Elements 11
    Sony DCR-TRV33E (miniDV Camcorder)
    The import from a miniDV with add media functionality from DV is loading the video from the tape.
    However, on the Apple screen there are disturbing artifacts in the video like shifted columns. The material is not useable at all.
    Importing the same material into iMovie is leading to correct results.
    Using the iMovie imports via add media from file into Premiere Elements leads again to the artifacts mentioned.
    The import into Premiere Elements shows also a warning message stating that for certain listed items the file type is not supported or a different codec is required.
    It looks like that the artifacts are caused by the rendereing of the miniDV formated video in Premiere Elements.
    Is there anything missing I need to configure or install?
    Do I need to install a Codec? If yes, where do I get it from and how to install?

    The material was recorded using the same camera and connection was with FireWire (otherwise capture miniDV vide owouldn't work).

  • Importing from Sony TRV18E DV camera has stopped working

    I have been happily using my Sony TRV18E and importing footage to imovie 6.0.3 on my imac until this morning. Now when I try to import, it still allows me to control the camera via the firewire connection (ie I can start, stop, rewind, fast forward), but if I hit the import button, all that happens on the screen is that it states that the "camera playing", with a blue background. The camera plays but no clips are captured.
    FYI, it works fine on my macbook, so it is not the camera or the cable that are at fault. I have rebooted my imac and the camera a number of times, searched through the other focum topics and tried all of the suggestions on the apple imovie site. Firewire recognises the camera correctly (as per another post on this site), so it is not a firewire 600 / 800 issue.
    I installed the following software updates this morning, which is the only thing I can think of that has changed since yesterday:

    I had the same thing happen this morning after installing QuickTime 7.1.5 and the other items you installed. Like you, I could control the camera but not import successfully.
    With the camera turned on and hooked up to iMovie, I shut off the camera, then turned it back on. Shazam! Everything started working again.
    This isn't the first time I've seen this happen. It's happened once in a while all the way back to iMovie 1. It seems to happen after I do something major, like upgrade QuickTime. It's as if the parts have to re-discover each other — iMovie, QuickTime, FireWire and the camera. Once they do, everything starts working again.
    The only suggestion I can make is to keep fiddling with it. Start up things in a different order until you hit the magic combination. Then breathe a sign of relief.
