VHS to computer

What type of software do I need once I transfer my tapes to my computer?

Things worth noting....
Some DV cameras will not record content that is copy protected, meaning that if these are commercial VHS tapes and they are copy protected, you camera will refuse to record it.
Second, DV tapes don't have the same capacity as a VHS tape, so remember that. Whatever you do, DO NOT, record the content in extended or long play mode to make it fit. Non-linear editors only import standard play mode content (typically) and recording in on those other two modes actually degrades the quality of the recording once transcoded back into standard play mode on your computer.
Also, MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE that your camera is recording it's audio in 16-bit, many cameras default to 12-bit. 12-bit audio will cause audio-sync issues.
And lastly, your camera will capture the overscan area that you would not normally see on a TV. This area runs along the edges of your footage and shows up as noise like garbage. You will know what I mean when you see it. You will need to mask this area out if you plan on viewing your captured content primarily on a computer. A TV will overscan this out. Note that future digital only sets may not overscan the image as much as a standard analog TV does... things to note for the future. LCD TVs still overscan the picture, just not as much as an analog TV does.

  • Transfer vhs to computer

I would like to connect my macbook pro to my vcr to move video from a vhs tape onto my computer.  Does anyone know what cables I need to connect so that both video and volume can be transferred??

You would need an analog-digital converter http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc110 . You then connect your VCR's video and audio outputs to the converter and connect the converter to your Mac via Firewire. Then play the video in your VCR and capture it in iMovie.

  • Getting VHS onto computer...

    Hey everyone,
I was told that I could get footage from VHS onto the computer by going through my video camera.
I have a Panasonic 3CCD NV-GS150 and I have tried a few different possibilities but it doesn't seem to be designed to import.
Can anyone give me anylight on the subject.

To be up front, it depends on what you consider to be "reasonable" LOL.

  • Copying VHS tapes to Hard Drive for editing in iMovie

OK, so I have old home videos on VHS tapes; I was going to burn them all to DVD, but found that they cannot be edited and I understand ripping them will degrade the quality (and we're working with VHS -- not the best quality to begin with!) So, I learned there is a way "analog digital capture" where I can transfer the VHS tapes onto a hard drive, then edit in iMovie.
I know I could pay for a transfer house to do it, but I think it would be wiser financially to invest in the device I need to do it myself.
I don't entirely understand what I need to buy, or how to do it, does anyone know what I am asking and what to do? Thank you so much!

I am using a JVC DR MV-150 VHS DVD recorder which dubs directly.
The results look better than the originals.
Some problems with "finalizing" the DVDs, but I managed to push a series of buttons and got there. It is not what JVC says in their manual and found something on line which was wrong as well, but a combination got me there.
It is one touch, load in tape, load in blank DVD and push dubbing. Machine initializes the DVD and then transfers, at the end you go through a process to "finalize" the DVD and done.
Cost me $200 at Sma's Club.
You can also take semi full tapes and pause the dubbing and put in a new VHS tape and record a "New" chapter.
All in all I like it. It has better quality than going from VHS to computer, I assume they have some sort of a chip in the machine to make this better.

  • How do I use my HDV camera to capture VCR video into Premiere Elements?

Hello all, I am trying to put VHS video into my computer. I have read that my Canon HV30 can act as an interface between my VCR and my computer. I am supposed to connect my VCR to my HV30 and my HV30 to the computer through firewire. My question is this, how do I connect my VCR to my HV30? Which port on my HV30 is a video input? It has a yellow connection named "AV/(headphones logo)", and one called "component" that looks like a mini firewire port. It also has a red connection named "mic". The other connections are the typical firewire port and such, so it cant be those.? Thanks

I'm not sure if your camcorder can work as a pass-through between your VHS and computer. Fewer and fewer camcorders have this feature.
Is your camcorder able to record input from another video source? That's kind of the test. If you camcorder can record from your VCR then it can likely also serve as a pass-through.
But, sadly, this is one of the features that camcorder manufacturers have stopped including with their cams.

  • My video in is driving me crazy!!!

a friend asked my to copy an video material from vhs to computer... i said why not. i've got na msi gf3 ti 200 VIVO card and id should not be a problem...
    what a mistake...
lately i did a fresh insatal of my os (winxp) so i had to instal both the wdm drivers fot my video in and some software (the wincoder application bundlet with the card works great couse it can capture a full PAL with no interlace)
i've instaled the driver (1.16) ... restart.... all drivers have ben instales with no problems... ok check with virtual dub... everythink is ok but in B&W (cards defult is SECAM (SIC!) a nd VD has no option to switch to PAL)
ok lets install win coder. i've instaled the application... restart... ok lets run it...
and after i run wincoder it generates a fatal error ant shutes it's self... ok i've had problems with it ealier so...
i;ve tryed other wdm drivers (1.13/1.22) other video drivers (20.70/30.30/42.86) still no good... i eaven tryed all vsynch setings... still on good... i even tryed instalind a fresh win98 still no good...
    HELP!!!

I know seqeunce preset is set to dv pal, but that doesn't say anything about the state of the current sequence....
Command-0 (zero) for sequence settings: is the 'anamorphic'- checkbox accidently set?
Probably oldfashioned enough to have thought of that yourself but I give it a shot...

  • Vhs direct to computer

I have recently been trying to copy some old vhs tapes to dvd's by recording them to my camcorder, then capturing them on my computer software. My camcorder stops recording some of the tapes due to copy restrictions on the tape. Will using a analog to digital converter to bypass the camcorder solve my problem or will the software on the computer do the same thing? (Capturing on Final Cut Espress) If this is an option, what reliable and inexpensive converters ar there available. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Scott,
You may want to take a look at Sony's DVDirect VRD-VC20.
    http://reviews.designtechnica.com/review2700.html
I just purchased one and i love it! Don't know how i got along w/o it for so long. Works just like a standard VCR when used with DVD or DVD-RW media (in plus or minus). I recently transferred several family VHS and SVHS tapes to DVD in real time! Works like a charm.
However, you won't find all the elaborate selection of menus & chapters like iMovie>iDVD or FCP>DVDSP. DVDirect does create chapters and menus but they are very basic.
I can also capture to DVD in real time from a Sony 3 chip (TRV-900) via FW. Works great and I can fit up to 6 hrs of playback on a single layer DVD or 12 hrs. on DL.
I also work with a Sony media converter box
    http://dv411.com/sondvmcda2dv.html
that allows me to capture analog directly to my mac. Works well (but it will not bypass copy protection to the best of my knowledge nor will the DVDirect).

  • After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

    Grahamster, welcome to the forum.
I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's.  I have been using it for years without a glitch.  I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types.  Please let us know if it works or not.

  • Rip old VHS tapes onto Computer (possible?)

I wanted to know if it is possible to take old home movies, say from the 80's and somehow get this VHS footage onto my computer. Is there a firewire/usb device I could buy just for this function?
    I don't have a video camera.

Seeing as my parents have a horrible DVD player, couldn't I just buy a decent DVD recorder/player (I can find some for about $100) and just record my vhs tapes onto DVD and then rip the DVD content onto my computer? It would involve a purchase of the recorder but I could justify it as a xmas gift to my parents.
I would call that a Hattrick!
I do own such a device, some Pioneer HD/DVDstandalone corder... excellent! it offers some basic editing, even import via firewire (camcorders); ok, the DVDmenus look horrible! ("design" is a cultural determined thing...); and I do record my TVprogram for a week and watch later, no ads... or, I use excessively that time-shift feature: my favorite show (CSI) starts exactly, when it's nighty-nighty time for my son... so, daddy watches 20min later
as often said here: imports from DVD are lossy, a process of high computation (=time), less convenient... but.. for a "private" project? and a new, state-of-the-art dvd player as a gift? perfect!

Sorry for this question. Can you use this device with Vlc or QuickTime? Does skype support it? Is this device supported only by its own software?
I need a device that can work with my own software. My software can work only with a QuickTime supported device.

  • How can I convert VHS movies to DVD so I can watch on my computer

I have a set of James Dean movies I want to convert from VSH to DVD.  How can I do this without too much trouble or expense?

It would be cheaper to just buy the DVD set.

and you will get much better video quality than any VHS conversion.

  • Solutions to importing VHS and Hi8 video to iMovie6?

I would like to import into my G4 tower with OS10.5 my old VHS and Hi8 videos for editing in iMovie 06. I've tried creating a DVD first but iMovie doesn't recognize it from the internal DVD player or as a file. I tried shareware Rippers but not able to import the results into iMovie.
I've looked at the PYRO Analog/DV Mac Video Capture - In & Out device at $210. This looks like it may be the only thing that works. It converts any signal to DV and then connects via Firewire to the computer. Thus I assume is readable by iMovie and may even create clips at the appropriate places.
What solutions have you found that work? Ease of use is nice but not essential. Modest price would also be nice but what do I have to do to make this work. I anticipate having additional Hi8 tapes in the future to edit then make into DVDs as well as what I have now. All help appreciated. Thanks, Ken
