VHS to MPEG2 for DVDSP

I have over 50 hours of VHS to program to menu DVD.
I have FCP and DVDSP.
Is there a proven method to bypass capture into FCP and export via Compressor by capturing directly to MPEG2 realtime via a MPEG2 encoder card and import these files into DVDSP?
Thanks

I would buy a (domestic) DVD recorder, and connect the VHS direct to that using an S-VHS lead, and the audio line input/outputs. Record to DVD-R for real-time MPEG2 encoding. Then put the resulting disc in your Mac. You can extract the .mp2 s & ac3 s using Cinematize or various free tools. Import the files into DVD SP, drop onto the timeline, and trim the IN and OUT times as required. Custom build your own menu, and you are done.
Note that - for VHS transfers - a DVD recorder is likely to be perfectly adequate quality, and a much cheaper real-time encoder than a hardware card for a computer.

  • Export from final cut pro for DVDsp

I was following the DVD step by step web page create a menu for DVDsp, and it say to export the movie from FCP as a background. How do I do this?
It also says "remember make it an m2v outside of DVD SP". What is this and how do I do it?
    Thank you

When you expert from FCP the video can be used as a menu background. There are two things to consider:
    1) IF you are going to composite the text for the buttons within FCP then add a simple overlay for the highlights (using Photoshop or similar to create the overlay) then you canencode the footage to MPEG2 using Compressor and place it as a menu background with no worries.
    2) If on the other hand you are going to use the footage as a background in DVDSP and then add buttons from the palette (or anything else from the palette for that matter) then DVDSP will encode it when it gets built. If you use MPEG2 as the background it gets encoded twice and loses quality, so it is better in this case to use a normal .mov from FCP.
Encoding outside of DVDSP - you should use Compressor or a better encoder for this. DVDSP can encode video, but it doesn't give you much control. The settings are there and will apply to any unencoded asset when you build (generally menu graphics), but you get a much better quality when you use BitVice, MegaPEG.X or just about any thing else to encode the video with. You also have the added advantage that the build time in DVDSP is reduced.

  • I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

  • Roxio Easy VHS To DVD For Mac work on a MacBook Pro version 10.6.8?

I want to convert some VHS tapes to DVD and I found out that there's a software that can do that with a Mac: the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac.
However, when I looked some reviews and it says that this software doesn't work on Mac version 10.6.
Has anyone tried this software? Did it work well with your notebook? (Not a desktop!!)
    Thanks!!

    Why not ask Roxio?

  • How to make template for DVDSP?

I used to make my templates for DVDSP with Photoshop, but now I do not have this program anymore. Is there any other way to build templates? On the DVDSP webside it says that you can build them with Motion 4, but how do you do the layering?
And does anyone know, whether Photoshop elements (since this is effortable for me) could do the job?
I am very thankful for some help!
    Yours Swantje

Photoshop Elements does a great job. I use it all of the time.

  • Newby needs basic tutorial for dvdsp

I'm sorry for this question but I am new to DVDSP. I was using Idvd which was pretty straight forward but now that I have studio pro I am lost. I bought the Martin Sitter and Adrian Ramseier book but I can't make head nor tails of it.
I looked for DVDSP for Dummies but I guess they don't have one.
Can anyone recommend a simple, basic book on how I can get started? (Or can someone explain to me, like I was a four year old, how I can simply just export my project from FCP to DVDSP-Burn it on to a disc? I can't even figure that out!
If I can just get started I know I can get going with all of the good stuff later.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Compressing for DVDSP

    Hi,
I am having a lot of trouble encoding a coupe of fcp movies for DVDSP. I have tried compressor and DVDSP to no avail.
Both are DV movies; one of them very complex, the other not so much. The very complex one is 72min, the other is an 8min trailer. I am using FCP Studio 5.1.1 on a PowerPC G4, OS 10.4.7.
The main problem: artifacts when played using a regular DVD player. It does not happen using simulator (with and without background encoding) or my computers' DVD players.
I have tried changing field dominance, using self-contained movies instead of experting directly to compressor; using DVDSP's compression, etc. I have read a lot on the subject already and cannot figure out what is going on. My understanding is that compressor is not the way to go. Is DVDSP the best option? If so, what would be the best settings to use?
In sum, what is the best way to compress this kind of projects (complex, lots of movement, stills and speed changes) for DVDSP?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
    Best,
    Mabel

So you've tried exporting from FCS to QT movie, directly to compressor, and you've tried compressing the QT movie asset in DVDSP, and you have artifacts in each case, right?
First, I don't think that letting DVDSP do your compression is a good way to go for the longer, complicated project. Maybe for the short one if you must.
I'd go back to FCS and place compression markers at frames that are the beginning of big movement segments. I think FCS will automatically place markers at transitions. Then with the markers in place I'd export to QT movie (doesn't have to be self-contained) and then drag that movie file into compressor. In compressor choose MPEG-2 preset appropriate for the time, probably 90 minutes best quality, at the same time encode a Dolby AC3 audio file, and this may give you better results.
    good luck.

  • Mpeg2 for Lion

I purchased mpeg2 for quicktime but it doesn't install on Lion. Anyone knows a solution?
    Thanks. renzo

This is the solution from always adopted to uniform the different video codec http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian

  • "VTS ID in Sector Header is Invalid" for DVDSP

When my DVD went to the replicator they returned an error message that read:
“VTS ID in Sector Header is Invalid” for DVDSP They rejected my project and the possible solution read requires re-authoring. Could this happen during the creation of the DLT or is this more likely a mistake I made in authoring? I'm dying for someone elses insight because I am stumped. It would be most appreciated.

    Are they mastering on Eclipse?
Full error something like the folllowing?
"The rule (VTS id in sector header is invalid) that is marked error is quite severe actually since the VTS (ID) is used to indicate which encryption key will be used during mastering. If this is incorrect then the wrong encryption key can be used for mastering a VTS with the wrong encryption key."
Long story short is that Apple and Eclipse never seemed to agree where the problem comes from.
Anyway, I have had that message from time to time and the DVDs replicated fine, you may want to note the following on this issue with respect to who is doing your mastering:
"One additional thought on this is to actually check the information in the VTS ID and CP_SEC see if the values are invalid. You might check a few of them and verify what information is there. A lot of times these errors/warning are produced by an authoring package or even a FIRMWARE level in a DVD writer and it will not cause issues."

  • Progressive footage for DVDSP

I've been doing some experimental encodes from compressor as a result of 'white papers' on a few forums. I imported interlaced footage into compressor and using encoding options exported it as a 'progressive' mpeg2. Opened DVDSP and added a track. Never noticed it before but DVDSP reports the track as interlaced even without placing the footage on it. When I place the 'progressive' footage on the interlaced track DVDSP still reports the track as interlaced in the inspector?
There is no option in DVDSP to change the track from interlaced to progressive.
    Whats's going on here?
Is 'interlaced' an unchangeable default format in DVDSP.
Is it therefore a waste of time DE-interlacing footage with compressor before importing it into DVDSP.
    Is DVDSP RE-interlacing the footage?
    Peter

Thanks for the response. Here's the whole story. I bought a Sony HVRV1 shooting Pal 25fps, as it boasted 'Progressive' but it also shoots Interlaced. The short story is that it turns out to be 'progressive segmented frames, laid to tape as interlaced' I had a load of problems finding this out. FCP treats it as interlaced, won't recognise it as progressive.
So I abandoned the 'Progressive segmented frames' and shot Interlaced.
As a result of 'authoritative' articles on a well known forum everyone was advised that we 'must' deinterlace. More red herrings. I took this advice at its word and I'm at this juncture now having wasted over a week encoding interlaced footage to progressive to find out from yourself that the DVD spec is by default, interlaced. I'm grateful for the heads up,thanks.
    One more thing you say
"Material converted to progressive with Compressor will look better on progressive displays (such as computers) because you're scrubbing away the interlacing, so there is some benefit to that"
All computer media players that I use will deinterlace footage for viewing anyway so any encoding is pointless. Picture the process. The footage is interlaced, encoded as progressive by compressor, reinterlaced by DVDSP? I couldn't see how this would improve how it looks, seems it might be why I'm so disappointed in the quality of my DVDs.
I think you've solved my question and I'm one step closer to getting a 'clean' workflow.
    Thanks
    Peter

  • What is best export in FCP for DVDSP?

    hello,
i am just looking for the optimum settings for a one hour movie to take into DVDSP from FCP?
i have been using an MPEG2 export setting with 6.8 bit rate from FCP then taking that file directly into DVDSP and burning...results are pretty good but text looks to flicker a bit at times...
is this the correct method? or is a QT source file best?
    thanks,
    steven

A maximum bit rate of 6.8 together with dolby2/AC3 audio works well for that length movie.
Text flickers could be attributable to just about anything including choosing the wrong font and font size.
And if you are working in NTSC DV footage, you also may have issues with that.

  • How to: export 4:2:0 MPEG2 for Visual Circuits Firefly MC

I am trying to make a series of videos for a multi-channel media player called FireFly MC by Visual Circuits. It plays on 3 monitors and I am trying to make a multi screen presentation to give the illusion that it spans all 3 at times and the goes back to individual montors and back or whatever.
Every time i export and MPEG2 from Premiere Pro and play it on the system, there are tons of artifacts. and color changes to B & W and back to color.
There is a manual online, but the encoding requirements are not really something i am altogether familiar with.
    Here are some:
    1. Files must be program stream MPEG2 or system stream
MPEG1 of audio/video, or elementary stream MPEG2 or
MPEG1 of video only or audio only.
    2. Use 4:2:0, not 4:2:2 encoding.
    3. In MPEG-2, both audio and video fields should be encoded.
    This is the normal default.
    4. Audio only (Dolby Digital or MPEG Layer 2) files cannot be
mixed with files containing videos (MPEG, MPEG2 program
    stream, video only).
    5. Firefly – Standard IDE Hard Drive): The total bit rate of a
Firefly player must not exceed 40 mbps across four channels
(i.e. averaging 10 mbps per channel). Channels may be
encoded at different bit rates (up to 15 mbps on a given
channel) as long as 40 mbps is not exceeded across a single
    hard drive (4-channel player).
    6. The presentation time stamp (PTS) values contained in the
audio and video streams in a file must be continuous and
increasing. In particular, the PTS values should not reset to 0 at
any point in the file. The time between the first and last time
stamps in a file should reflect the actual duration of the file.
    7. Files should be no less than 4 megabytes in size. If some of
your files are smaller than 4 megabytes, use an editor to
combine the files to create a single file at least 4 megabytes in
    size.
    8. Files should be no larger than 2 gigabytes in size.
Anyone ever work with this system or know how to export this type of file?
    Thx in advance.

Hi Jim, I too am confused!
Why should the video codec for Option 1 be V210? Isn't this reserved for 10-bit video?
    http://www.fourcc.org/yuv.php#V210
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS398C372B-B748-4ef6-BA0D-396D2E360707.ht ml
I would have thought that the UYVY option was the correct choice for 8-bit video.
    http://www.fourcc.org/yuv.php#UYVY
Videos exported using Option 2 definately do not play correctly in Windows Media Player - I get no video, just audio. I have tried many different computers running different versions of Windows and Windows Media Player. I'm running Premiere CS5 v5.03 if that makes any difference.
I don't understand why videos from Option 1 play fine in Windows Media Player even though the systems don't have AJA hardware installed (or any video I/O device) - they are just plain vanilla office PCs

  • Which compressor preset should I use for dvdsp "2hour movie".

Which compressor preset & settings should I use to fit a 2 hour QT movie from fcp onto 4.7gb single layer dvd in dvdsp.

The 120 Minute preset is for two hours, but you may want to bring the average down and the high rate also.
Take a look here for some info (make use to use AC3 and not aif audio)

  • Creating motion menus for DVDSP

Does anyone know of a good book or video (online is fine too) that really goes into the hows of creating moving menus in Motion to be used in DVDSP?

There are a number of problems with the script.  To see them for yourself, open the script with the UCCX script editor, Select Tools>Validate.  This will show you all of the consistency errors with the script in a new windows on the bottom right-hand side of the script editor.  You can select an error for it to take you to the problem in the script.
Here are the main problems I see:
    1. You have many "GoTo" steps pointing to the "Menu" label, but there is no "Menu" label.  You need to create specific Labels for the English and Spanish Menus, then point to those as needed.  You can label a menu step by going to the properties of the step, selecting the label tab on the left-hand side, and enter the text of the label.
    2.  There are several Call Redirect steps to the variable "Front Desk", but that variable doesn't exist.
    3.  You have many Play Prompt steps playing the "Busy" prompt.  The script is case-sensitive, and your variable is named "busy".

  • Save as Disc Image option or technique for DVDSP?

one thing about iDVD I miss since beginning to learn DVDSP is its "Save As Disc Image" feature.
I don't see such a command, menu item or mention of anything like this in the manual.
Build seems to come close by producing a virtual DVD, but I don't see a path to enable me to use that virtual DVD to then produce actual physical DVDs.
Can someone please shed light on this for me?
    thank you!
    r

At the bottom of the Build and Format dialog, in the section marked Destination, you will see a button labelled Output Device. It will normally show your DVD burner. Click it and change to Hard Drive.
The Output Format button will jump to the .img (Disk Image) setting.
