[VIA] Cannot Boot From SATA PCI Controller With On Board RAID Enabled

Hi.
I have a KT3 ULTRA 2 with onboard RAID controller. I have installed a SUNIX 2 port SATA PCI Controller which works perfectly & appears in the selectable boot devices.  This is not a problem except for the fact that I have 4 devices on the On-Board Raid Controller.  When the on-board raid controller is enabled, the SATA device dissapears from the boot options & I can no longer boot from the SATA controller.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks

I had already tried that....
I set the boot sequence to use the SATA card & then renabled the on-board raid, but after reboot the sata card is not available as a possible boot device & asks me to insert system disk...even if the boot sequence is set to boot from other devices.
Really annoyying this, looks like I am going to have to get a different motherboard for something so silly.  I am already at the latest bios release.

  • Mainboard PM8M-V cannot boot from SATA

Mainboard PM8M-V does not have BOOT FROM SATA in the BIOS settings. In fact nowhere in the entire bios SATA is mentioned.
The SATA HDD is properly partitioned. Windows is installed on it, but it boots from an IDE HDD and then continues to load from the SATA.
I tried to set the bios to boot from SCSI, but in vain.
I checked if there is a bios update, but the MSI website linked me to Live Update 5, which even cannot find drivers for the mainboard, not to speak for a bios update.
The version of the BIOS is
    Manufacturer : Phoenix Technologies, LTD
    Version : 6.00 PG
    Date : 03/23/2005 (mm/dd/yyyy)
    HELP!

    The boot options are:
    Floppy, LS120, IDE0,SCSI,CDROM,IDE1,IDE2,IDE3,ZIP100,USB-FDD,USB-CDROM,USB-HDD,LAN,DISABLED
I tried to remove the IDE HDD (also no USB drives were connected) while installing windows, it won't boot anyway.
Even if windows did not write correctly the MBR (well, I used the repair console to with FIXMBR and FIXBOOT), the BIOS should probably say something like "No boot sector", but it just hangs.
After that I installed with an IDE HDD connected.
Presuming that "as i recall boards of yours age listed all drives as ide" is true, shouldn't I have IDE5, since there are 4 IDE channels anyway? I will try all the IDE options, anyway.
I did not understand this question "is the make and size of the sata in that list"?

It should ID the drive by model number or at least by brand & size as Wonkanoby said, at least it does on newer MBs.
Some options of the device are shown during boot (some RAID adjustments), but it is not displayed anywhere in the BIOS setup.
Also, on most bioses during oot a message is displayed "Press key XXX for boot options", but this one does not display something like this. Any clue if there could be such a key? F1 and F8 do not work.

  • Suggestions for a good SATA PCI controller with RAID support

I would like to know what the best mac version is for the price, but I would also like to know if there is any way to use a MUCH cheaper made for the PC side. Many of them even say they support Linux but not Mac?!

    Hi-
The following has a bunch of choices for you:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Criteria=SATA%20High%2DSpeed%20Contr oller%20Mac%20Cards&sort=a
The Sonnet 2 channel is currently the most economical.
As for the PC side, you can buy one and try, fail, buy another, etc., or just accept that you have a Mac, and that you need Mac compatible hardware.

I have a brand new Macbook pro 17" - shipped with Lion, cannot boot from snow-lopard disk - tech said I would be able to downgrade. I cant because if I try to boot from the CD it just beeps 3 times. Boots just fine from a Lion startup disk I created first. What the heck is going on here? Very upset that i cannot reach apple support in the evening any longer. If anyone can help it would be awsome. Tnx good prople.

    Hi Paul,
Just a quick question, are your Fn keys working properly and the 2 fingered scrolling?
I've done much the same with the help of 2 Apple Geniuses who found me an original 10.6.7 install disk for a my new macbook pro.
It installed OK but... Fn keys don't work apart from F3 and F12, the rest give an error sound. 2 fingered scrolling on the trackpad doesn't work either.
Mine was a custom build 15" with hi res glossy screen - I wonder if they've put in the newer wired keyboard mentioned here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4809
or, if my problem relates to being on 10.6.7...
Any info would be gratefully received.

  • [solved] cannot boot from dd usb and cannot install 64 with unetbootin

    hi,
been trying to install arch for almost 24 hours now. i just cannot manage to setup USBs to boot from.
first i was using unetbootin, but when the device not found error came up i tried using the methods recommended in the wiki. however, my hp elitebook 2540p cannot boot from the usb created using dd or imagewriter. so i went back to unetbootin and figured out the error was that the syslinux.cfg file needed to have ../../ replaced by archisobasedir=arch archisolabel=KINGSTON. now however, i cannot seem to figure out how to install a 64 bit system. when i run pacstrap all packages have i686 at the end, which i assume means its the 32 bit one.
    help
EDIT: ok i have now used 3 different USB sticks and run
    sudo dd if=~/Downloads/archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso of=/dev/sdd
on them. plugging them into the 2540p the laptop just wont boot. it wont get past the first hp screen, where i normally press esc to enter the menu so i can choose boot options. the usb just blinks and nothing happens. this same problem happens with imagewriter in windows.

as mentioned in the edit above, the computer wont get past the hp screen where one gets the option to press the esc key... the usb just blinks and nothing happens...
    EDIT:
no the usb was not mounted...
the image was checked with both sha1sum and md5sum...
    EDIT2:
ok so i think i am in... i reformatted the usb with fat filesystem, and then went through the second instructions from the wiki, ie installing "Without overwriting the USB stick"... But i am still wondering why i couldnt just do the normal dd method. Is it that the hp bios cannot read certain filesystems?

  • Help: Cannot boot from leopard disc anymore, everything else fine

I was working on an ibook and messing with it in firewire mode and was going to install leopard on it that way from my macpro. (just letting you know the context)
I tried to restart my machine(mac pro) and boot leopard both by pushing C and by running the installer.
I get the "You need to hold the power button panic message" everytime I do this. I unplugged external devices and tried this also and it has the same problem.
I cannot boot from the dvd anymore. If I eject the disc, osx loads normally.
Any ideas what I can do? (I have tried safe boot, pram clearing and hold option on boot to check options)

    I really appreciate everyone's help.
I am certainly not above taking the machine in but I will say this.....
I have been building and working on PC's for 15-20 years. I have never once used or had the need for a repair shop. It is my hobby. I recently switched to osx to give the mac a try and I love it.
I will say that vista/xp has four times as many problems but at least i can fix whatever comes my way hardware or software.
Any more ideas how to settle this without making my first trip to the repair shop ever?...

  • How can i get my Powerpc to boot from a PCIe drive

Hi, I just upgraded my PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 with 16GB of ram & two 1.8 tyrabite drives. My problem is, I also installed a Velocity solo x2 PCIe card
for a solid state drive. the system recogizes the drive but I'm having a problem with getting my system to boot from that PCIe card drive. Please if anyone
can help me I greatly appreciate it.

If you cannot get the ssd to boot, you can move folders to the ssd.
Unix command ln  -- The Unix make link command. I have a copy of virtual PC.  It insists on using a folder in my documents folder for saving all of the virtual machine information.  This folder is rather large.  I used the terminal command ln to move the folder to my external hard drive.  Virtual PC had no problem with this move.  I do not think that Mac applications notice the ln redirects.
You can use the Unix command ln to redirect a reference to folder on your small partition to a folder on  your larger partition. You need to be careful when you pick the folder. You best avoid any system folder, those folders needed at startup. You could pick some user data folder.   Home folders, that is folders in /Users, are a good choice.  Please try this when you have a full backup.
mac harddrive > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    man ln
    ln -s target source
    example:
let's make like my Christmas card folder is on my desktop and make like the names is cards.
    mac $ ls /Volumes
    GREEN/          Macintosh-HD@
    mac $ ls /Volumes/GREEN/Christmas\ Cards/
    10 - NeoOffice Writer.pdf*      christmasLabels.odt*
    AddressList.ods*                env - NeoOffice Writer.pdf*
    ChristmasAddressList.xls*       env.odt*
    ChristmasAddressList0.odb*      getLabels.odt*
    al.odb*
    mac $ cd ~/Desktop/
    mac $ pwd
    /Users/mac/Desktop
    mac $ ln -s /Volumes/GREEN/Christmas\ Cards/  cards
    mac $ cd cards/
    mac $ pwd
    /Users/mac/Desktop/cards
    mac $ ls
    10 - NeoOffice Writer.pdf*      christmasLabels.odt*
    AddressList.ods*                env - NeoOffice Writer.pdf*
    ChristmasAddressList.xls*       env.odt*
    ChristmasAddressList0.odb*      getLabels.odt*
    al.odb*
    mac $

  • Cannot boot from DVD since 10.4.6 update.

My Quad cannot boot from the Superdrive at all.Upon updating I decided to repair permissions from the DVD but everytime I got to the Apple logo the fans powered up,full tilt. I had to turn the Quad off from the power button and start up holding down the mouse, in order to eject the DVD.
As far as I remember, I allowed the computer to start up twice, and disconnected all peripherals whilst updating.
I've tried zapping the pram and resetting the nvram to no avail.I've inserted Disk Warrior and that will not boot. The computer runs fine from the HD (although there was one occasion when, briefly, a small OS9-style Mac monitor appeared with a question mark, then made way for a proper boot), but I'm really concerned at this problem. I do not want to wipe the system drive and start from scratch, since I've only just finished migrating a whole buch of software from another G5, and I have TV job looming.
Incidentally, both my other G5's and Mac Mini updated with no perceptable problems. Can anyone shed any light on this and, perhaps, offer a solution (other than a wipe ! ).
    Thank you.

Any installation can theoretically cause harm. If you aren't backed up, you may be forced to use Target Disk Mode if you can't boot a DVD, or an external DVD burner that supports booting. Both LaCie and Otherworld Computing have external Firewire DVD drives that support booting. Target Disk Mode is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Fortunately when you boot via Firewire or use Target Disk Mode, you bypass the hard drive's bootloading software, which you don't when you use the internal optical drive.

  • Boot from external firewire HD with ibook G4

I have installed a copy of my tiger OS on a passport studio portable HD. I then upgraded it to leopard using my installer disk. I am able to boot my desktop imac with it but I cannot do the same for my ibook which is what I want it for. I used the "universal method" of installing to the drive. It is partitioned using APM as instructed. The drive shows up on my desktop and the software is there but I cannot boot from it using system preferences, holding the option key or even restarting from the installer disk. I am open to any suggestions at this point.

    The Passport Studio?
    I'm not familiar with that devices specifications;
but if it sports USB 2.0 and not FireWire400,
and does not have the equivalent of an Oxford
chipset, it won't support booting PPC Macs.
Or it may, but sometimes a brand of hard disk
within some enclosures don't boot Mac well.
Anyway, you could see if the OS X Installer's
version of Disk Utility can repair the disk drive
or see if there are any error reports from there.
Apple Partition Map is the forma; HFS+ should
work, if it isn't the same and there is no option.
But Intel Macs use a different format scheme.
{Is the installer disc a suitable one for the
computer you have, or is it from a different
Mac model and version? Is it older than
the computer, or is it the as-shipped disc?
It would have to be a machine specific or
    retail disc newer than the as-shipped OS.}
Newer Macs with Intel processor can boot from
a properly formatted USB 2.0 externally powered
hard disk drive and enclosure. Or in some cases
a USB powered device... Or, a reduced version
of OS X on a specially-prepared USB Flash drive.
Was the system on an external FW HD put
there via a clone utility, as taken from a full
normal installed system, from a computer?
Or was the external FW HD the recipient
of a full new installation to the attached drive
from the host computer, as an optional place
to install the OSX version you have?
There are some rules, of those a few can be
found in the home page, Carbon Copy Cloner.
The basics for cloning vary with the software
utilities used and it is possible to make a bad
clone which cannot boot a computer in FW.
Or one so corrupted, that an hour's wait and
time spent fixing bad permissions is needed.
In the meantime, I am set to go a few hundred
miles and won't be taking a computer; no net
    and too cold of weather.
Hopefully someone will see this thread and
add some thoughts on the topic. Sorry I was
    not of more help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • K7N2G-ILSR: How to boot from SATA when a raid card is installed

    The situation:
    1. I have a separate raid controller (Silicon chip) with 2 drives on raid 0.
    2. I have another drive (my boot drive) that I want to place on the onboard Promise SATA raid controller.
    The problem:
The bios doesn't include an option to specifically boot from SATA, only SCSI. So when I place my boot drive to the onboard Promise SATA raid controller, the system won't boot because it's looking for system files on the raid 0 drive.
Is there a workaround for this?

Well, all my drives are IDE. I did try the SATA RAID using lumberjacker's bios but it isn't stable.
Aside from 3 IDE drives, I also have 2 atapi drives (cdr-w, dvd).
    Here's my current setup:
ide 0 - boot drive (master), DVD (slave)
    ide 1 - cdr-w (master)
onboard ide (sata controller) - (vacant)
    SATA 1 - (vacant)
    SATA 2 - (vacant)
promise raid card (2 ide ports)- 2 hard drives on raid 0 (both as master)
What I really want to do is place my boot drive on the SATA port (using a pata to sata converter), or on the onboard promise parallel port. So that it can have it's own port.

  • Cannot boot from osx or cd, help

    Hi,
I have a problem. My macbook 5.1 boots only to windows, not to cd or osx. I am not sure what has happened but I think I installed the latest security update. I have a backup with time machine (osx) and vista with windows backup. I can wipe the whole disk clean (I do this only if I am absolutely sure it will work, CD is now unresponsive, what about if network fails...).
However, I cannot boot from CD, to verbose mode or to single user mode. None of the keys work (eject, c, s, v, cmd+c, cmd+v, cmd+s) anymore at startup. My installation dvd is stuck into the cd-rom. The eject button does not work in windows (otherwise the vista works perfectly). Also the refit screen has disappeared.
This problem is caused (to my knowlege) due to following actions:
    1. security updade => failure to boot osx (hangs to apple-logo and shuts down)
    2. recovery from time machine to 2 days old configuration (last known working)
    3. current status, no cd, osx or startup buttons
This is my work computer and I need the linux (osx) part on monday. Please help.
    Juha
    Technical details:
    - refit
    - osx leopard
    - macbook 5.1
    - vista created with bootcamp
    - timemachine 500Gb

I got the problem worked out. Now that I have the possibility to boot from cd I used the recovery from timecapsule again. Now it worked more properly. There is some issues with some programs and data (missing), but thats another story.
Last time I left the recovery program calculating the space needed (step 1) overnight, as takes a lot of time. I finished the step 2 (choose recovery date and copy the files) in the morning. I was not at the computer when it did the thing and I only saw the text 'recovery complete'.
Apparently there is a 'feature' that if you lose the connection between steps 1 and 2, the recovery program copies the network path that is empty (connection lost -> empty path). The program thinks everything is copied and gives 'recovery complete' message.
The problem is now mostly solved, some programs are not recovered. This is seen as question mark icons in the tray. Overall I have succesfully recovered from the latest security update.

P.S. My original login name has disappeared from this forum. I am the same guy as Dv3. Could some admin mark this as solved.

  • I can't boot from the windows cd with boot camp

I got Vista up and running via boot camp but now I have a problem that could cause some issues. How the **** do you boot from a windows cd with boot camp!?!? When I stick in the windows based CD (could be the vista install CD -after vista's been installed of course- or a Windows home server restore cd) and hold down the option key I chose to boot from the CD in the menu then the screen goes black as it should and then it says press any key to boot from cd or dvd..... It gives me 5 seconds to press a key and then it conintues to boot into Vista. The thing is when it asks me to press any key I press any and all keys on the keyboard and I get no response and it just boots into vista. This can be quite a problem, what if I need to restore vista via the install CD? I can't chose to boot from it cause everytime it asks me to none of my key presses register. So everytime I have a problem I won't be able to restore or even diagnose it, I'll just have to reinstall vista? I don't think I can even bring up the safe mode or anything like this. The keyboard won't work until I reach the password screen of Vista. I've also tried plugging in a USB keyboard to it and it still doesn't work. So basically I need to know how to make the keyboard work before Vista loads.

Ok, well I just tried booting from the windows cd and it seems that I lied to ya It seems that you can boot from it. Although I only took it to the point I was comfortable with. The boot resulted in it asking me to install windows and I didn't see any partitions listed or anything, so I chickened out (so to speak) not wanting to take the chance of my Leopard installation getting screwed up.
It's been a quite some time since I used the Vista boot disc and can't really remember how it went when I used it in conjunction with boot camp beta. Sorry can't give you anymore information.

Note: I had to delete all partitions on the PC before doing a fresh installation of Win 7 pro as Premium can not joing domain.

    Hello,
So, you installed Window 7 Pro with a DVD, you boot with it to install the O.S, and now it does not work?
Have you tried to load the BIOS default values or even updating the BIOS?
If it had work before, cant understand why it does not work now...
    Let me know.

  • Cannot boot from Superdrives on my Mac Pro!!

    Hello,
So I tried to boot last night from my Disk Warrior CD in order to do a maintenance check.
I hold C key but in vain after a couple of minutes I get the black screen/freeze with the message to restart holding power button.
Today, I tried to install Leopard on my external firewire drive and when the Mac restarted I got the same result.......freeze.
I tried both Superdrives.......same result, verified connections etc..... no dice.
I run the latest Leopard 10.5.3 in a first edition Mac Pro Dual 2.66 with 13GB RAM and 3 hard drives.
What bugs me is the fact that while holding or not the C key, after a couple of minuted I hear the ''click'' that you hear when you shut down the Mac Pro. It is like the Mac is shutting off but still runs for a few minutes before giving me the black screen.
This means I cannot boot anything anymore on my Mac Pro.
Please help me, any deas, what should I try doing.
The 2 Superdrives are Pioneer 111D and 112D......one is master the other on cable select.
    Thank you.

Another Surprise: I tried to boot from the original Mac Pro Install Discs, result: it crashes even faster.
Well that's a BUMMER You've got a hardware problem somewhere and it's time for 'Hit or Miss' Tactics to find it
First things First. Follow Theses Steps ...
Step 1) Can you boot from the hard drive with both 'Superdrives' plug in and empty?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 2) Check the 'Superdrives' from the 'System Profiler' -> 'Hardware' -> 'ATA Bus'. Does it list BOTH Drives?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 3) Is the TOP drive 'Unit Number: 0' (Zero) and the BOTTOM drive 'Unit Number: 1'.
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 4) Can you 'Mount' a CD/DVD to the 'Desktop' from both drives?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 5) Can you 'REBOOT' the 'Install DVD' from the 'Desktop'?
If your answer is NO Goto Step 7.
Step 6) Happy Days Are Here Again. Stop Here.
    Step 7) 'DON'T PANIC!
Step 8) Open case and remove the 'Superdrive' bay. The 'Original' drive should be in the TOP bay with the END OF the 'Ribbon' cable plugged in to it. This 'Ribbon' cable and the 'Superdrive' should have a 'NOTCH' and can ONLY be plugged in a certain way. Set the 'Drive Select' jumper to 'Master'. Unplug the 'Ribbon' and 'Power' cable from the 'BOTTOM Superdrive'.
Step 9) Repeat Steps 1 thru 5 and if you make it to Step 6, Repeat Step 8 using the 'BOTTOM Superdrive'.
Step 10) Hmm, both 'Superdrives' WORK by themselves but NOT together So connect the TOP drive back as in Step 8 and connect the BOTTOM drive but change the BOTTOM drive's 'Jumper' to 'Slave'. Leave the TOP drive set to 'Master'.
Step 11) Repeat Steps 1 thru 5 and if you DO NOT make it to Step 6 then I'll need more information from your 'Console Error Logs'.
    End Of Steps ............................................................................... .................................
Not relevant to you problem BUT did you change your VIDEO CARD?
