Via KT6V 8x

Hi all ..
I have a via kt6v with 8x agp card support.
I have made the bios update with the MSI LiveUpdate..
after the bios update, in the list apears only 1x, 2x and 4x .. (8x no) ..
I have a GeForce 3 TI 200 what support 4x.
In the bios, apears only what the agp card support ? or is a problem whit the MainBoard ?
Thanks

8x will never appear unless you stick in an 8x vga card
And also have the latest chipset(Via Hyperion) drivers installed.

  • [VIA] KT6V...Windows XP installation won't load...

Hi all! I was building this new pc with a friend, we set everything up and after some work we got into the BIOS. We disabled the SATA drive 'cause it was giving some trouble. When we try booting with the XP cd, it seems to be reading it and then we get a message saying boot error, please insert BOOT diskette in A. That was also done but then the message "remove all disks and media from the drives and press any button to re-start" appears. I thought it was because that was not the diskette, so I put another one in (with word documents and maybe other stuff) but it never "read" it...it kept saying put in the BOOT diskette.
    These are the specs:
    KT6V MSI Motherboard
    Sempron 2400+
    cd-rw
WD 80gb HD (it's a slave with the jumper to the master cd)
    256 pc2700 (333) markvision memory
    floppy 1.44
I don't know if this matters but, I connected some chassis cables to the motherboard that lead to USB and sound ports at the front. I also have tried it with other memory sticks and the CPU seems to be running at 100MHz (that's what the BIOS says).
The PSU is of 400 w (is that the correct way to say it?).
Hope you can help me. PLEASE!

14a 3.3v says to me its a very poor psu
    28a is the norm
    12v is light as well
Just a thing to keep in mind. You may want to consider replacing this PSU, as it is really weak. It may continue operating for now, but when it goes out it may take your whole system with it.
    Good Luck

  • [VIA] KT6V sound & graphics problem. HELP!

I have a kt6v motherboard running windows XP, at first it was running fine, sound was working graphics etc...
but I discovered a lot of viruses on my PC and messed it up so I reinstalled windows - full format,
the sound at this point was working - but I have an ATI 9600se and the catalyast controls center now fails to load. 'Application initlialisation failed........'. Note before this, it worked fine.
I then bought a 250gb SATA hard drive and installed windows XP on that, now the sound does not work completely, it shows up under device manager so is not disabled - winamp shows files being played and so does win media player but I cannot hear anything - but my speakers are working I have tested them and they are the speakers i had before.
I have done a bios upgrade about 5/6 months ago and have now done it agian cos the sound was not working - no effect, tried clearing cmos; nothin.
Please man I need some help!
    My Pc spec are:
    AMD athlon XP 2500+
    NEC DVD-RW IDE
    Creative CD-ROM IDE
    250gb SATA HD
    80gb Western Digital HD
    Radeon 9600se

mmm, maybe not related, but in any case can we at least see your PSU specs, so we can rule that out if need be?
Is your problem caused by your PSU?
Possibly? But why was it working perfectly in the first place? Oh I know I will disconnect the CDROM and DVD and IDE HD and then try it
That is a good point cos the case is pretty old - but good.
Here is the URL for my case; its old but still going good:
    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=2640&GroupID=8
If it works (which I hope and pray cos I can't be bothered with th hassle of giving it back) then I will buy a new PSU.
One more thing I have XP media edition and when I click test hardware in audio properies it tests the hardware, the progress bar goes full (still can't hear anything though) and these 2 message boxes come up
    First this one:
    http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/mughalstores/untitled.jpg
Then I click OK and then this one:
    http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/mughalstores/untitled1.jpg
TRIED IT GUYS - disconnected 2 system fans, 1 IDE HD, DVD-RW and the CD-ROM and also the FDD.
    Still no effect.

And every now and then when i´m browsing on the internet, the screen goes black for a second an then it turns back to where I was, but sometimes with graphics out of place; I´m not doing any overclock to my card.
This hapens more often when I use internet epxlorer.
    Thankx

I have the same black screen problem..screen goes black for a second or two then comes back..normal..only when browsing w/either Firefox or Explorer ..It dosent seem to matter what video drivers i use ,still goes black screen , Thinking its somthing to do with modem irq ????? Device manager is clean ,no conflicts. Ocationaly when i boot up the system when its cold i get vertical scrambled lines, then if i hit the reset they go away...Hope this helps...also i have tryied different settings in the bios w/ no luck.. Teck support at Directron.com said he thought it was bad ram on the card and said to RMA it.

  • [VIA] MSI KT6V BIOS doesn't recognize my Maxtor 160GB SATA HD

I bought new Maxtor DiamondMax 160GB SATA 7200RPM harddisk (6L160M0). For being able to install Windows on the new harddisk, I used the SATA RAID driver (VT6420/VT8237) floppy, that came with the motherboard and everything went fine. Now I have installed Windows but BIOS doesn't recognize the new harddisk at all. When I check the properties of the harddisk in Windows the size is correct (~160GB).
System is working fine, but I don't dare to split the partition, before I'm positive it won't cause any problems.
Should I flash BIOS, install new sata drivers or nothing?
Motherboard MSI KT6V VIA KT600 chipset

I understand what you mean, kalasilma, but a SATA drive is not recognized by the BIOS in the same way as a PATA drive. In fact, you aren´t going to see any drive information in the BIOS at all. The situation is the same in Win XP. You can see the HD in My Computer, but despite that, you can´t get information about the HD in device manager as you would with a PATA drive. The SATA interface is much more like a software type of interface than the much older PATA interface. It´s a little bit like the old days, when you had to manually configure a HD even in BIOS in order to have it properly recognized. With that in mind, the situation is much more satisfying, as the HD is visible and the size is correctly recognized at least in Windows
In a near future the situation is most likely going to be much better when it comes to BIOS recognizing SATA drives, but with these "beta" testing motherboards of ours, the only thing we can do is to be satisfied with our drives beeing recognized by Windows, using software drivers loaded at bootup. In fact your system wouldn´t be booting at all if the drive wasn´t recognized, since the drivers are loaded from the same HD. I think you can feel completly safe with the situation, since I have seen PATA drives beeing incorrectly recognized by Windows at installation. I had one 200GB HD that appeared as only 130GB no matter what I would do. I finaly partitined it and formatted the boot partition and installed Win. I used Partition Magic to locate and format the "lost" partiton under Windows. I think you are ready to go...

  • [VIA] I have some problems with the KT6V motherboard...

This is what i have right now for that motherboard: i have an AMD Athlon XP 2800+, All-in-Wonder ATI Video Card, and recently bought a PC3200 512MB DDR ram for it
Well I installed everything that should be connected to the motherboard, when I turn it on, it comes up with this:
    Scan Devices, Please wait...
    Press<Tab> Key into User Window!
    Serial_Ch0 Master:No Device
    Serial_Ch1 Master:No Device.
then it does the load whats indicated in the BIOS, which is the hard drives I have in it. and does that, gets up to a part where it says the computer has been shut down improper and asks if you want to start in safe mode and such, so i hit enter on Start windows normally, and after that, it restarts it does that everytime and i have no clue how to fix it.
If you know how to fix it, that would be awesome.

I agree with STU.Use the WINXP CD to format.I usually go into BIOS and make CD rom first boot device.Put in WINXP CD and boot from the CD.Whan prompted to install WINDOWS,DELETE the partition that it already has and do a fresh format called "RAW".That way you ensure that every file was wiped off the drive.
Almost forgot.Leave it all underclocked. After installing WINXP,load the VIA 4 IN 1 drivers first.Do all you windows updates(I would not install SP2 though)Then you can procede to clock the board to the correct settings. From my experience,if you try to run FSB and RAM and correct speeds before loading WINXP it can and has caused the system to hang before finishing loading and also BSOD if you have to try to resume from where it hangs and continue the install. Not sure why this happens but it worked for me "EVERY" time on several machines with no problems.

  • [VIA] MSI-7021 (KT6V-LSR) and Sempron 2500 problem.

I bought a AMD Sempron 2500 1.75ghz and a MSI-7021 KTV6-LSR, I connected the Sempron to the motherboard and powered up, well I got power to the fans, but no activity and no sounds. I plugged in the LED diagnostic kit that came with the motherboard and all 4 red lights are on, according to the manual this means either a fault with the CPU or it aint seated properly. So I reset the CPU and the same 4 red LED's came on again.  I thought it could be a PSU supply problem, so I disconnected all the hard drives and the DVD-ROM drives and still the same problem occured.  So I decided to test my old Athlon 1.2gig CPU in the motherboard and the same problem occured again, no activity and all 4 red LEDS on the diagnostic.  I also disconnected the 2 DDR memory chips.
I dont have one of those 4 pin power connectors, do I need on of these.
I tested the new Sempron in my old PC motherboard, an ASUS A7V-E and it powered up without any problems, so obviously it cannot be the new Sempron CPU that is fauly.
Can someone point me in the right direction.  I hope I have supplied enough information.

I would need the 4 pin even for a old Athlon Socket A CPU too.  Why is this exactly, does the KTV6 use more watts than a normal older mobo.
You need the 4-pin because it is part of the mainboard's design power.  That 4-pin connector exclusively supplies your processor.  No 4-pin lead = no power to the processor.
And you are better off with the Antec than the Tagan.  Tom's Hardware, based in Germany where Tagan is prevalent, has had nothing but failures from Tagan power supplies.  Most recently THG chose a Tagan for their Intel and AMD Stress Test - the Tagan died.  To be fair, the Tagan was a pre-production test unit, but the authors did make a point of saying this was not the first Tagan that has died in their lab.

  • Upgrade to KT6V-LSR gone wrong, system freezes and BSOD's

    Hi guys!
I just recently bought a KT6V-LSR to replace and Asrock K7S41GX motherboard. After putting all together (specs on signature) installed windows from scratch in a new partition on the master drive. Installed VIA 4 in 1, DirectX 9.0c, Catalyst 5.03, Realtek sound driver, LAN driver, USB patch, all of them were the latest versions available from the corresponding site,  everything while the pc was not connected to the internet.. When I installed the Catalyst driver, rebooted the computer and it started testing the computer to find the "most stable settings" according to the installation said. The screen got all srambled but it seemed to bel going on, on the installation process it said that it'll take about 1 minute, waited about 5 an then restarted (it said that the test might cause the system not to respond anymore and that if it happened, restart it), it started all right. Then I installed NAV 2005. Installed acrobat reader. Then I tried to install Office 2003 and the system froze when it was about 15% of the copying files process. Restarted it and then the system crashed again the same way. If I leave the system running idle, it crashes randomly. It didn't show up with a BSOD at the beginning but now it shows
    kernel_stack_inpage_error
    0x00000077 (0xc000000E,0xc000000E,0xc00000000, 0x01b42000)
    and another one
    kernel_stack_inpage_error
    0x0000007A (0xE14F862c,0xc000000E,0xcBF97B704, 0x02c23860)
    (once each)
I'm thinking (from what I have read here) it might be the power supply, but since here in costa rica it's almost imposible to find a decent 400W PSU and I won't have the 100 bucks it costs for a couple of weeks more, is there anything I should try?
Temps on the system are 45-49 idle, 53-55 load. Applied thermal grease to the HS&F before installed it.
the 12+ (I've read is very important since the KT6V is very hungry on this rail) is showing up about 12 on the core center, but I've read that is not really representative...
Haven't updated to BIOS version 2.0 yet...
I checked the memory, ran only 1 stick and then the other one, on both slots.
I'm open to any advice, for sure I'll replace the PSU but that's gonna take a couple of weeks and I wanted to check if there's something I could try in the mean time.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey , Ford Tech , can you give an explanation of what  the setup with  the CD drive and the master  harddrive on IDE 1 will  do .
I have the same PSU  nazgoth has .
I'm just interested in the affect  that  setup will have with the  power in the system  .
If you have noticed my posts its more of a house electricity thing with my setup , the harddrive not getting enough power , temporarily I hope .
Not really a voltage concern. But I guess it could if both drives are running at the same time. With IDE, one is limited to two drives in a chain, and these drives cannot work at the same time. In essence, they must "take turns".So by putting 1 HDD as primary master and cd as slave, you will get the full performance of your drive. Most peeps only run CD roms for program installs and or CD burning or copying anways.
As far as the cable, yes there are 80 wire flat cables that work just fine. The only reason to go to the round cables is to improve air-flow and or the length of the cable itself.
I am sure many people use it the old fashion way with no problems.I just experienced a performance issue when I had HDD's on the same chain. It was mainly because I load all my games on my D drive. It also kept defaulting it to PIO mode which is the slowest mode.Since swaping the drives around on the chain(IDE1=HDD-Operating system-primary master and CD burner as Primary slave)(IDE2=HDD-Storage/gaming-secondary master and my DVD rom as secondary slave)Both drives run in UMDA-MODE-5 set up that way with no more problems

  • I can't install Windows 98 on a KT6V-LSR

I used to be able to dual boot Win98 and 2K from different partitions on a single 80Gb hard drive. Needed the Win98 only because my old Matrox capture card has no drivers for the newer OS’s. When I changed my mobo to an MSI KT6V-LSR (Via KT600) I couldn’t get the Win98 partition to work (I didn’t have to wipe it through 2 earlier mobo changes. I guess it couldn’t stand the 3rd)
The previous setup was like this, all on a 1-1/2 year old 80gb Maxtor:
    Primary partition, 753 mb, FAT32, Windows 98
1st logical partition, 11gb, NTFS, Windows 2K Pro
2nd logical partition, 25gb, FAT32, for video files
3rd logical partition, 40gb, FAT32, for all my data, downloads, etc
I could get the standard Windows OS selection page upon boot. This time whenever I try to install Windows 98 I get the above “serious error” message right after the partition check by scandisk. It's not the installer's fault, it's been with me for a long time. Worked flawlessly before.
I am able to install Win2K on NTFS or FAT32. It is only when I try to install Win98 that I get slammed with this error. I can’t use my capture card and that’s where I earn a little.
The drive passes both the Maxtor diagnostic software (full system scan) and the Seatools generic test (full system scan).
There are no viruses detected (my software may be faulty, though).
PartitionMagic 7 fails to create the small partition I need for Win98, saying “cannot create partition, anti-virus software may be running” But I have disabled any virus settings in BIOS and I am using PartitionMagic from the boot diskettes.
Really stumped here. Can’t afford to buy a new drive right now just so to transfer my files and wipe the current drive.
In summary, the drive allows me to install Win2K on either NTFS or FAT32. But it will not allow me to install Win 98, whether on a Primary partition or the first logical partition (i.e. after Win2K has already been installed)
I have since been able to install Win98. But I had to connect the Drive to a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller.
Question is, is the new hardware really incompatible with the old OS?
THEN...  On two consecutive nights, my registry in Windows 2000 got corrupted (hive corruption). And I have had to reformat and reinstall both times. I am worried now that the mobo I got may have serious faults.
Hope you can give me quick feedback on this.

    Hello,
You should be able to use windows 98 with this motherboard.
    Can you try this.
Format the drive with only 1 partition (80GB FAT32)
    Use maxblast to do this.
Remove the Ultra ATA66 PCI controller.
    Remove the sound card.
Plug the hard drive in IDE cable 1 (set it to master too)
Plug your CD drive to IDE cable 2, set it to master.
    Reset your CMOS
Now when you power up, enter the BIOS
    go to Frequency/voltage control
Set the CPU to 166Mhz FSB (it should be running at 1.667Ghz)
    CPU Ratio = Auto
go to advanced chipset configuration >DRAM settings
    Set the memory to 333Mhz(166Mhz)
    Go to Standard CMOS setup.
    Press on your Hard drive
    Set the mode to LBA
Also change your boot order to
    Floppy
    CD ROM
    Your hard drive
    Go to integrated peripherals
    Disable the onboard sound
    Now save and exit.
Boot from the windows 98 CD
    See what happens.

  • HALT detection on VIA KT600 when USB2 pen drive is connected

I have noticed that when an USB2 memory is connected to mainboards with VIA KT600 (such as MSI KT6 Delta and KT6V) the cpu HALT detection (enabled in the bios) stop to work and the CPU temperature rise up from 38°C to 49°C, in idle.
Instead, plugging an USB mouse the halt detection doesn't stop to work and the temperature doesn't rise.
I wish note this to MSI, hoping that they will issue a fix in the new bios for KT6 Delta and KT6V boards.
The operative system is Windows 2000 SP4. I have not tried on Windows XP and with USB 1.1 memories.
If someone else can test this, it may be useful.

Now I think I know it is Italian device.
Maybe, but this is a long shot, BIOS might think it is a booting device. What do you think? This is what gives me the idea: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/usbfaq.mspx
    Excerpt:
"Q: Can a USB storage device be the primary (and only) means of storage?
No. USB-based mass storage devices cannot be the primary hard disk storage solution on a regular system (Microsoft Windows Logo Program System and Device Requirements, B10.1.5.6). However, these devices might be expected to be a replacement for booting to load an operating system (for example using a CD-ROM drive over USB) on the primary boot drive or as a replacement for legacy floppy disk drives. Booting from an external USB CD-ROM or USB floppy disk drive requires BIOS support.
For more information and to review the latest WinHEC presentations for ideas see http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/default.mspx."

  • KT6V & Win XP Instabilty

    Hello,
I have just built my first AMD machine (spec below) and I have been having various stabilty issues along the way and would apprecaiate some advice.
The initial issues seemed to be video card driver and memory related. Loading 'only' the driver from the ATI CD (no other components) and then upating driver using the Win XP driver update facility semed to fixed the video issue he bad memory (failed memtest) was replaced the memory with Crucial and now seems OK (passes memtest).
However I am still getting some sytem freezes and the odd BSOD (cannot see details as system reboots (although I have this disabled in XP 'start up & recovery options). I do not have any additional software loaded as yet, just done a clean install of Win XP SP2 and want to get it stable before I do.
From what I have read it seems the PSU is seriously underpowered, although I have stripped a DVD burner and sound card from the syetm to see if that helps (still monitoring this one).
I did try installing the VIA 4-1 drivers from the MSI MB CD and the situation became very unstable (black screens every few minutes), reverted to previous configuration and now all OK (did not install in safe mode!)
What test could I do to check out the PSU situation to see if it this that is causing the issue (before I buy a new one), what other things should I do to track down the issue?
    My System:
    MSI KT6V-LSR
Athlon XP 3000+ - AMD Heatsink & Fan (out of the box)
    2x 512 Mb DDR PC 3200 (Crucial)
    Sapphire 9600SE 128 Mb
    On board sound
    HDD Maxtor 120Gb SATA
    Sony CD-RW CRX320E
    PSU Wintech 350W 3.3v/15A. 5v/25A. +12v/13A !!
    Floppy Drive
    PS2Mouse
    Win XP SP2

Thank you for your patience! And for your willingness to keep up with us! Yes, it has been a learning travel!
We have so three main possible culprits, g card, mboard and CPU. (G card was seated all the way, right, so the 'hook' took grip of the card.) It really could be either, so if things got sort of more stable with other RAM stick, that is a good way to... Maybe not 'start' but 'continue'.
However being able to run 100 MHz somewhat stable is a sign that it should be OK. And the mboard have responded to your measures, though the outcome have not been what you hoped for. In that line of thinking, that leaves g card and CPU. And frankly FSB problems can't have much to do with AGP. So reseating the CPU would be next step.
Do you have a store or a well equipped good friend around, where you might try out part by part? I reckon it might feel a waste to return all the hardware for not knowing which one is faulty.
As Sharp's feeling of loosing confidence have sailed over the oceans, I might suggest you contact ebuyer as well.
    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/help/index.html?rb=2458589915&action=Y29udGFjdF91cw==
Oh, and you posted a question earlier. 43C is where you land with everything working. System temps would normally be around 10 C less. What is the name of your case? (The optimal, but not always needed condition is an in-fan front low, and the out-fan rear high. If you want to overclock or constantly play heavy 3D games and applications, I suggest you add a side door fan. Then you might not need the rear fan - the PSU fan is sufficient - but must really have an active CPU fan.)

    Hello,
Sometimes a  clean reinstall of windows can help, you should try this.
Then you must install the VIA 4in1 drivers, restart.
Hopefully your winXP cd has SP2 integrated to it, if not then install SP2.

Install ATI catalyst drivers v4.11 then restart.
Now at this point try a game without the sound drivers.
    What happens?

  • KT6V install XP Sp2 Sata NO FLOPPY? nlite help?

I've been going nuts trying to install XP SP2 onto a SATA drive. Basically the XP2 install CD loads and says there are no hard drives found.
The floppy controller on my KT6V seems to be dead (never used it before).
So I've been trying to create a customized XP install using nlite with no luck.
I've created three CDs now but none of them see the hard drive.
The SATA hard drive was formatted and is visible in my Win2000 system. I power down, unplug the Win2K drive, and then boot from the CD to try to install XP on the new drive.
Can anyone walk me through what it takes to create an nlite customized install that includes the SATA drivers so I can install without a floppy? (I would love to meet the programmer that decided drivers could only be loaded from a floppy...)
    Thanks.

    That's where I started 3 days ago!
    Maybe some more specific questions.
Which specific drivers from the 5.30c Via drivers should I be integrating into my XP setup disk image?
    NT4? NT5?
    From which folder?
    DRVDISK?
    i386?

  • Kt6v+sata hangs on flying windows

hi just bought a new rig and the com hangs and restarts on flying windows. i'm using windows xp home ed.
    sys specs:
    HEC 385 silent op PSU
    athlon 2800
    msi kt6v
    2x corsair 256mb pc 400mhz
    tdk52w32rw52re 16xdvd
    sapphire radeon 9800 pro

i've tried reinstalling win xp home and win xp pro but it hangs on the blue screen just after you choose to install windows or repair or quit installation.
it hangs whether i choose restart or new install.
i've brought it back to the shop and i've changed every damn part except the PSU and the ethernet card.
funny thing was the guy at the shop showed me the com was working (he had flashed the bios updated all the driers and installed every damn thing), the minute i brought it home the com hung on flying windows.(first startup) damn!
    HELP??
    Thanks in advance!

Just because you dont't use RAID, I guess you still have to install the VIA Serial drivers.
    Quote from your motherboard manual:
    New Windows OS (2000/XP/NT4) Installation
The following details the installation of the drivers while installing Windows
    XP.
    1. Start the installation:
Boot from the CD-ROM. Press F6 when the message "Press F6 if you
need to install third party SCSI or RAID driver" appears.
    2. When the Windows Setup window is generated, press S to
    specify an Additional Device(s).
    3. Insert the driver diskette VIA VT6420/VT8237 Disk Driver into
    drive A: and press .
    4. Depending on your operation system, choose VIA Serial ATA RAID
Controller(Windows XP), VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller(Windows 2000)
or VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller(Windows NT4) from the list that appears
on Windows XP Setup screen, press the key.
    5. Press to continue with installation or if you need to specify
any additional devices to be installed, do so at this time. Once all devices are
specified, press to continue with installation.
    6. From the Windows XP Setup screen, press the key. Setup
will now load all device files and then continue the Windows XP installation
