[VIA Series] PT880 doesn't recognize SATA disk at first boot

Hello everybody,
I have an MSI PT880 that works fine since one year with a 40 Gb ATA Maxtor hard drive.
I have just bought a 80 Gb SATA hard drive (Maxtor model 6L080M0) and have a very annoying problem:
- when I power on the computer, the VIA Sata Bios tells me that it doesn't find any Sata disk (and WinXP doesn't boot...),
- then if I press Ctrl-Alt-Del or the Reset button to boot again, the Sata Bios find the Sata disk (and WinXP starts...),
- as long as the computer isn't power off, I can reboot many times, the Sata Bios will always find the Sata disk and boot WinXP,
- but if I power off the computer, then power on, the Sata disk is not recognized.
I'm sure that the hard disk is not defective, because I have tried with another one (same model), and the same problem occurs.
I also tried to flash the Bios to the latest release (1.9), same problem...
My Config:
- MSI PT880 Neo-LSR with latest BIOS available (V1.9)
- INTEL Pentium 4C 2.4 Ghz
- 2 x 256 Infineon PC3200 (Dual mode)
- SAPPHIRE 9800 Pro
- ATA Hard drive: 40 Gb Maxtor (6E030L0) on first IDE controller
- SATA Hard drive: 80 Gb Maxtor (6L080M0) on first SATA controller
- Yamaha CRW-F1E and PIONNER DRV-105 optical drive on second IDE controller
- Win XP SP2

By "booting outside the case", you mean: extracting the motherboard from the case, putting it on a table, and trying to boot with only the mobo, the cpu, a new memory module, a simple video card, and the Sata HDD
I can try that but it' not easy... and the mobo is out of warranty
Don't you think that it could be a Sata Bios bug that appears only with this Maxtor hard drive model
As I've just bought this hard drive, I think that I'm going to exchange it for a Western Digital or a Seagate...

  • Tecra M4 - DVD drive doesn't recognize any disk under Vista

    Hi,
after the installation of Vista my dvd drive doesn't recognize any disks !
No upgrade from XP! It was a clean Vista installation.
I found several links about the registry entries upper and lower filter this entries doesn't exist in my registry under the class CDROM.
I tested the drive under XP it works fine and recognizes everything.
Drivers are correctly installed no problems in the device manager is prompted.
So i have no idea how to get it working, seems to be a Vista problem
Could any one help me ? I'm really frustrated about this
    Thanks for your help

    Maybe this helps:
    - Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
    - Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    - Then reboot the notebook
But what happens exactly? What disks are not recognized?

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

    Hi,
Here's one option you could try as it will give a good indication whether the problem is with Windows or a Hardware issue with the optical drive itself.
    Create a bootable Ubuntu CD
The Ubuntu CD you create should run as you boot the notebook ( ie outside of Windows operating system ), so if this will not run, the problem is almost certainly a Hardware issue with the DVD drive
On another PC, follow the procedure on the link below to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if this OS will run from the CD.  The 'try it' option does not need to install on the Hard Drive, it just runs from the CD.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
Let me know if this will run.
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • My computer doesn't recognize a disk to upgrade to snow leopard

    Hi
I have macbook version 10.5.8 (model identifiner: MacBookPro5,3, i bought it in 2009) and bought a install DVD to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard (version 10.6.3). Before I bought the disk from apple store, I chatted with the costomer servise and they said it's the right disk to buy. But my computer doesn't read the disk and keep rejecting. Does anyone know why this happens or How I can solve this problem?

If it's the white Snow Leopard disc, then it's the correct one and any MacBook Pro can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Will your drive read other discs? It may be that your drive lens just needs a good cleaning - you can try one of the commerical CD/DVD lens cleaning kits sold at most electronics store and give that a try. If that doesn't work then I would take the disc back to the Apple Store along with your computer and let them have a go. If there's a mechanical problem with your SuperDrive they'll be able to diagnose that as well.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • K7N2 Delta2-LSR - SATA disk does not boot with IDE disk connected

I have K7N2 Delta2-LSR with SATA 160GB drive and CD burner connected as primary master.
When I'm connecting any IDE hard disk, the mainboard detects it corectly, but I'm not able to boot from SATA drive.
I tried to turn off IDE drive detection in BIOS (set [None] instead of [Auto]) and SATA boots!!! And Windows XP and Linux can see both disks!!!
Is it a BUG in BIOS?
    Maciek
    K7N2 Delta2-LSR (with latest BIOS Sep 18, 2004)
    Athlon XP (Barton) 2800+
    SATA drive WD 160GB
    GF4MX440
    FSB333, DDRAM 512MB/400
PSU 350W, works stable with 2 HDs and CDRW.

Strange my board boots fine from SATA with a PATA HDD connected. XP and Linux will see any disks connected to the motherboard and powered up in your system even if disabled in the bios apart from those connected to a separate raid controller which should be enabled. Both these operating systems address the hardware directly once their drivers are loaded so will ignore the settings you have in the bios. This behaviour is normal and not a bios bug. The main boot disk has of course to be enabled in the bios for the boot loader to operate. The boot priority with the new south bridge is PATA first followed by SATA and XP uses this too. To ensure that XP boots from SATA properly the PATA drive must be disconnected during the install process. You also need to ensure that the SATA disk is the only active partition connected to your system. If the PATA disk has been used to boot an operating system previously there may still be an active partition present on the drive. If that is the case removing the active partition should cure the problem but if the present arrangement works for you then fine.

maralv I had a similar problem recently. Everything LOOKED ok wrt IPs; the NIC could ping-and-be-pinged, but would not appear on the Windows network.
The problem went away when I uninstalled and reinstalled the NIC (VIA Rhine II) driver, reverting to the earlier MSI driver (sorry I don't recall if from the MSI disk or from the MSI website or from the VIA website--I will look).
EDIT: I'm now running the driver from viaarena.com. It's called Version 41 dated 06-May-05 and v3.44 shows-up in driver properties.
I had gotten an "updated" driver from the MS Windows website, and though it didn't fail right away, the only thing I can think is that it might be buggy in some way.

  • Snow Leopard install doesn't recognize system disk

I'm trying to upgrade a MacPro1,1 running Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard. The system has 3 hard drives, two striped RAID sets, each made with two physical drives and an external hard drive enclosure used for Time Machine.
When I run the SL installer, I agree to the license and get to the screen where I pick the hard drive to upgrade. Neither of the RAID sets is displayed, only the Time Machine disk.
Already tried repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility with no luck. Leopard boots and runs fine on this machine. What's going on?

I just re-ran the installer to look for the 'Show All Disk....' button. There is no such button in my installer.
The only actions available are to click on the displayed, Time Machine disk, which shows a message that the disk can't be used "because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme." If I have no disks selected, the "Customize..." button is active which brings up a dialog with no contents except for the text "0 bytes required for installation", a "Restore Defaults" button in the lower left and an "OK" button in the lower right. "Restore Defaults" does nothing and "OK" dismisses this dialog. Finally, I can click "Go Back" which just takes me to the initial screen.

  • [VIA Series] PT880 Overclocking Issue

Well i can't Overclock as high as i thought i could i can overclock to 3.6 but thats nearly stable any higher then i have to reboot i was thinking of a bios degrade from 1.9 - 1.7 i herad 1.7 unlocks multiplyers so im thinking that that could help my overclocking issue and plus on top of that i can't raise my CPU V Core only my DDR and AGP south Bridge and North Bridge and thats it i found out that overclocking on Factory settings got me a higher overclock and putting the divder and 6/5 166Mhz. Any Ideas on higher overclocking i have a Nice cooler Thermal Take Spark 7+ maybe artic silver 5 would help and well heres my specs-
    Intel Pentium 4 3.2E Prescott
    MSI PT880 FSR Board (7043)
1 Gigabyte Kingston Hyper X (Dual Channel)
    GeForce 4 MX 420 64 Meg (4X)
    60 Gigabyte Maxtor Sata
    and alot of case fans
    350 Watt Power Supply Stock

    Hi,
The Prescott is dynamic voltage, therefore you cannot "SET" volltage.
If you are going to "play" with North and South Bridge voltages..........get a heatsink for south bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should post in OVERCLOCKING part of Forum. You may receive better support there.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't recognize USB disk

I have a USB external hard drive that I've used for a number of years plugged directly into my Mac mini.  I'm trying to move it to the Airport Extreme as a shared hard drive, but the device is not recognizing it.  It won't show up in my Finder sidebar, nor will it appear in Airport Utility in the list of disks.
For contrast, I've got another drive that shows up fine whenever I plug it in.
    Things I've tried:
    - A USB hub plugged into the Airport Extreme.  If I plug both disks into the hub, the second one works just fine, while the first still won't appear in the Finder, and in Airport Utility it is displayed as a "0MB" capacity drive with no volumes.  If I don't plug in the second disk, I don't think the first disk shows up at all.
    - Different USB cable.  Same result.
    - Reformat the drive (via Disk Utility, as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)").  Same result.
    - Rollback the firmware.  Currently at 7.6.  I tried 7.5.2 and 7.4.1.  Same result.
    Any ideas?

Some older drives just won't work at a network USB location....probably a firmware limitation on the drive electronics.
Check to see if the firmware on the hard drive can be updated.
If you have checked your powered USB hub to verify that all ports are functional, and checked USB cables, I think you have to conclude that you....like me in the past....have found a drive just won't work where you want it to.

  • [VIA Series] PT880 Neo-FSR...SOOOO ANGRY!

    Hi all,
I bought my PT880 Neo-FSR around late January/early February and until recently I hadn't been doing anything too memory intensive. Recently I bought World of Warcraft and have had many crashes. First it was tolerable, then when it got really bad i thought it was Blizzard's fault. I checked their boards and went throught their steps to rectify. One of which was the memtest86.
I ran the memtest and found that my Corsair was bad, both sticks! So i tried some Kingston. All of it also bad. 7 sticks of memory. I thought, "There's no way that could be right." So I ran memtest on another computer, a cheapie eMachine. Every piece of memory i had was A-ok. I thought i'd get a third PC involved for a final say. I ran the memtest again (mulitple passes each time mind you) and again no errors.
I came here to see if anyone else had a similar problem, and yeah. But no solution for me. This is pretty much my hail-mary. I'd really like help from someone more knowledgeable than myself. I really do not want to buy a new mobo, but WoW is a subscription game...i'd really like to play it as well as edit video, or record stuff with my video card.
If you have any solutions for me PLEASE, I really need help. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

ConeJodc, it's not your memory.  Some will tell you it's your pwr supply, some will tell you to change your ddr voltage... it's none of that.  This mobo is crap in my opinion because it's got the VIA name on it.  Everything I've ever owned that had a VIA chipset eventually blew up (usually it was crap to begin with).
See my latest update in my post regarding this motherboard.

The same memory that tested bad in my PT880 Neo-FSR runs perfectly fine in my new 865PE Neo2.
Return it if you can and get the intel based 478 board.

  • Superdrive doesn't recognize blank disks

Was trying to burn some photo's to a disk today. When I inserted a blank disk into the superdrive, it would come up and ask what action to take. I would select open Finder. Then it would come back and say disk not recognized. I tried two brands of DVD's and one CD. I have used each of these in the drive before with no issue.
Then I moved the files to my MBP and burned the photo's to disk with no issue. After burning, I reinserted the disk into the iMac and it could read the disk with no issue.
Anyone seen this before and have advice before I call applecare ??

Are you by chance using a Western Digital external hard drive with your computer? I am having that same exact problem and I can't figure out what is causing it! I have reinstalled my os like 5 times and when I move my applications back I keep running into the same problem. I've tried just putting them back one at a time but I didn't run into the problem until I reboot my computer. I'm curious if my hard drive's software is what's causing the problem, because I had installed my hard drive's software about 3 days before it started doing this.

  • Disk Utility doesn't recognizes my disk brand

I'm trying to format my LaCie 500 GB USB. When I run disk utility it shows the disk as a Samsung HD501LJ. It's thefirst time that happens. I tried disconnecting, repairing disk, etc. Any thoughts on that?

Samsung or others. LaCie, like most other disk packagers, does not make the hard drive itself. There are only a very few companies in the entire world that make the actual drive; Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate, Hitachi and Fujitsu are about it. Everyone else just builds the case (or buys a case and puts their own label on it), buys the hard drive, and assembles and sells it as a complete unit.
