[VIA Series] PT880 Neo - 2 dead PCI slots?

Scanning through the forums, I didn't see anything relevant so here goes.
I bought my board not too long ago and have been slowly adding peripherals to my system.  I try to spread things out when choosing a PCI slot for a new card.  Well, looking at my sig, I have discovered that two of my PCI slots are dead.
When I say dead, I mean that I'll install a card there (previously never installed), boot up to Windows, and wait for the Found New Hardware dialog.  I think that this is slightly broken, so I go to the Device Manager and none of my new items show up with uninstalled or installed drivers.  I crack my case, move the card to one of the working slots, and everything is dandy.
For the record, I refer to PCI 1 as the closest PCI slot to the AGP slot (most central physically on the motherboard).  Inheritently, PCI 5 is the slot closest to the corner of the motherboard.  I am having problems with slots 2 and 3.
I am hoping that there is a dip switch or a rule similar to memory slot usage that will fix this problem.  I have not found a solution yet and am hoping that someone here can help.
Thanks.

Update the BIOS, clear the CMOS, if ur problem is not solved, RMA the mainboard.

  • [VIA Series] PT880 Neo-FSR...SOOOO ANGRY!

    Hi all,
I bought my PT880 Neo-FSR around late January/early February and until recently I hadn't been doing anything too memory intensive. Recently I bought World of Warcraft and have had many crashes. First it was tolerable, then when it got really bad i thought it was Blizzard's fault. I checked their boards and went throught their steps to rectify. One of which was the memtest86.
I ran the memtest and found that my Corsair was bad, both sticks! So i tried some Kingston. All of it also bad. 7 sticks of memory. I thought, "There's no way that could be right." So I ran memtest on another computer, a cheapie eMachine. Every piece of memory i had was A-ok. I thought i'd get a third PC involved for a final say. I ran the memtest again (mulitple passes each time mind you) and again no errors.
I came here to see if anyone else had a similar problem, and yeah. But no solution for me. This is pretty much my hail-mary. I'd really like help from someone more knowledgeable than myself. I really do not want to buy a new mobo, but WoW is a subscription game...i'd really like to play it as well as edit video, or record stuff with my video card.
If you have any solutions for me PLEASE, I really need help. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

ConeJodc, it's not your memory.  Some will tell you it's your pwr supply, some will tell you to change your ddr voltage... it's none of that.  This mobo is crap in my opinion because it's got the VIA name on it.  Everything I've ever owned that had a VIA chipset eventually blew up (usually it was crap to begin with).
See my latest update in my post regarding this motherboard.

The same memory that tested bad in my PT880 Neo-FSR runs perfectly fine in my new 865PE Neo2.
Return it if you can and get the intel based 478 board.

  • [VIA Series] PT880 Neo-FSR hangs during POST after connecting USB device

I "successfully" built a new machine from scratch for the first time.  Windows 2000 was installed and working with updates.  I connected an iPod to a USB port (during the iTunes software installation) and the machine froze.  After a power cycle, the machine will not successfully boot.  After the fact, I discovered that the grounding wires on the USB2 connector were no longer connected.  I'm not 100% sure that I plugged the iPod into the USB ports connected to USB2, but that's a good assumption.
On reboot, the screen starts normally.  When the line "DEL: Setup  F11: Boot Menu F12:Network Boot TAB: Logo  F10: Flash Recovery" appears, the machine stops.  The next line reads "Flash Recovery".  The D-Bracket2 indicator lights stop at "Testing Base and Extended Memory".
I'm unable to select any of the options to enter the BIOS setup, etc.  I tried clearing the CMOS data using the jumper and I now get the logo screen, but the system still hangs with the same D-Bracket2 lights.
I do not have any spare memory, so if I need to swap it out for diagnostics, I'll have to go shopping.
Is there any way to salvage this board or did I permanently fry it?

No luck on entering BIOS or getting graphic screen to clear.
To clarify, I cleared the CMOS in despiration after the system hung and I couldn't get into BIOS.  I don't remember all the details from the original screen (before it was obscured by the graphic!), but I know that there was no "error message" per se.  Everything appeared normal except that "Flash Recovery" appeared an additional time below the "DEL: Setup..." line.  Before clearing the CMOS, I had no apparent response from any key.  (DEL, F10, F11, F12, etc.)
I'm inclined to assume that I managed to actually fry something on the board, but I'm hoping to get that confirmed before buying a replacement.

...loaded the newest driver my pc come up fine my os see the nic card with no trouble no error it gets a ip but is unable to communicate in the network...
maralv I had a similar problem recently. Everything LOOKED ok wrt IPs; the NIC could ping-and-be-pinged, but would not appear on the Windows network.
The problem went away when I uninstalled and reinstalled the NIC (VIA Rhine II) driver, reverting to the earlier MSI driver (sorry I don't recall if from the MSI disk or from the MSI website or from the VIA website--I will look).
EDIT: I'm now running the driver from viaarena.com. It's called Version 41 dated 06-May-05 and v3.44 shows-up in driver properties.
I had gotten an "updated" driver from the MS Windows website, and though it didn't fail right away, the only thing I can think is that it might be buggy in some way.

  • Dead PCI Slots

The problem started when my onboard sound mysteriously stopped working.  I don't know what happened, I just noticed that the onboard sound was not listed in windows.  I looked in the BIOS settings and couldn’t find any options to make it work.  I tried putting in a PCI sound card and it also did not work.  I then tried putting in other PCI devices such as a TV card, a network card, etc.  None worked!  It appears that my PCI slots are dead.  I assume the onboard sound is due to the same problem.  It also appears that the problem isn't a Windows problem, but actually a BIOS problem since none of these devices are listed in the PCI device list during boot.  There used to be a BIOS option to turn the onboard SoundBlaster sound enabled or disabled but this option is not present now (although I'm not sure if this was just removed with the latest BIOS 3.6 or if it is a matter of the BIOS being unable to detect the sound at all so not displaying the option).  Here is my Rig:
    MSI K8N Neo4 SLI/Platinum (MS-7100 BIOS Version 3.6)
    AMD 64 3000+ (Venice Core)
Dual Channel 2x 1 GB PC3200 Memory (2 GB Total)
    BFG Geforce 6600 GT
    Antec NeoPower 480 Watt PSU
2 DVD Burners, USB Card Reader, Floppy Drive, Wireless Mouse and Keyboard
Any Ideas about this?  Thanks for any help!

I had this same problem with 2 Asus nforce4 boards. My PCI slots, Sil SATA RAID and firewire controllers all stopped working. I suspect something goes wrong with the PCIE clock generator and as a result the PCI bus is severely overclocked/underclocked. Get a copy of clockgen for nforce4 boards (www.cpuid.org/clockgen.php) and see what speed your PCI bus is running at. It should be 33 mhz.
However, barring an accidentially overclocking your PCIE slot in bios, I don't think there is anything you can do to fix this. I simply had to RMA both of my Asus boards and finally go with an MSI Neo4.

  • [VIA Series] PT880 doesn't recognize SATA disk at first boot

    Hello everybody,
I have an MSI PT880 that works fine since one year with a 40 Gb ATA Maxtor hard drive.
I have just bought a 80 Gb SATA hard drive (Maxtor model 6L080M0) and have a very annoying problem:
    - when I power on the computer, the VIA Sata Bios tells me that it doesn't find any Sata disk (and WinXP doesn't boot...),
    - then if I press Ctrl-Alt-Del or the Reset button to boot again, the Sata Bios find the Sata disk (and WinXP starts...),
    - as long as the computer isn't power off, I can reboot many times, the Sata Bios will always find the Sata disk and boot WinXP,
    - but if I power off the computer, then power on, the Sata disk is not recognized.
I'm sure that the hard disk is not defective, because I have tried with another one (same model), and the same problem occurs.
I also tried to flash the Bios to the latest release (1.9), same problem...
    My Config:
    - MSI PT880 Neo-LSR with latest BIOS available (V1.9)
    - INTEL Pentium 4C 2.4 Ghz
    - 2 x 256 Infineon PC3200 (Dual mode)
    - SAPPHIRE 9800 Pro
    - ATA Hard drive: 40 Gb Maxtor (6E030L0) on first IDE controller
    - SATA Hard drive: 80 Gb Maxtor (6L080M0) on first SATA controller
    - Yamaha CRW-F1E and PIONNER DRV-105 optical drive on second IDE controller
    - Win XP SP2

By "booting outside the case", you mean: extracting the motherboard from the case, putting it on a table, and trying to boot with only the mobo, the cpu, a new memory module, a simple video card, and the Sata HDD
I can try that but it' not easy... and the mobo is out of warranty
Don't you think that it could be a Sata Bios bug that appears only with this Maxtor hard drive model
As I've just bought this hard drive, I think that I'm going to exchange it for a Western Digital or a Seagate...

  • [VIA Series] PT8 Neo-V JBAT1 pin positions - stupid question

Which end to count from - can't tell from the manuals. Is 1 at the end nearest the IDE connectors?
In one position (shorting pins farthest from the IDE connectors) nothing at all happens, in the other position I get through the bios to a blinking cursor on a blank screen.

    Okay - her's my spec:
    MSI PT8 Neo-V
    Pentium 4 2.53 533fsb Northwood
    Samsung 256MB DDR PC2100
    ATAPI DVDROM 16X
    TOSHIBA DVD-R-/DVD-RW-
    Seagate ST380021A 80GB 7200RPM
    NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440SE
Seasonic SS 300FS 300W Power Supply
    {+12v=15A,+3.3v=28A,+5.0v=30A}
All I did was change the motherboard from a VIA P4PB400 after an overheating problem (the processor fan broke due to build-up of dust - since then the PC was 'okay' but was cutting out after about 30 minutes use). I then tried a CPU upgrade on the VIA but it didn't support the Precott 2.4GHz I'd bought - so I went for the MSI board. I get the same symptoms with the MSI board using the Prescott - went back to the Northwood after seeing the power issues on your forum.
So - even if I unplug the DVDs and floppy - I get either nothing at all, or no hard drive boot (depending on the JBAT1 jumpers - hence I'd like to know which jumper is number 1).

  • Dead PCI slots in K8N motherboard? Help!

???-)I am putting together a new AMD 3500+ computer with the Platinum 2 motherboard and when XP is loaded it tells me I have a PCI Device with no drivers.  First off, I don't have any PCI cards in the slots so I'm not sure what it is referencing.  Second, when I try to add PCI cards I know are functional, it doesn't recognize them when XP boots.  I have the most recent BIOS and everything else seems functional.
I really think I have a bad motherboard.  Please let me know if you've experienced this before.

Sorry about the missing hardware requirements.
Yeah, I've tried loading the Nforce drivers that came with the board.  Regardless, everytime I reboot XP (home) it pops up the dialogue box indicating I have a unknown PCI device in slot 8.  Once again, I don't have any PCI devices in the machine.  Everything else appears to work correctly.  I have nextwork ability and the machine runs smooth.  Do you think I have somehow shorted the board?

    Hi,
The Prescott is dynamic voltage, therefore you cannot "SET" volltage.
If you are going to "play" with North and South Bridge voltages..........get a heatsink for south bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should post in OVERCLOCKING part of Forum. You may receive better support there.

  • [VIA Series] PT8 Neo Vmod???

Tried googling to no result... anyone know of any droop mods for these boards?? thanks

1.648V -> 1.584V, 64mV. Anyway, Vcore is designed to vary with loads. Since you said that's not even load, and it fluctuates, that means there is a serious instability on your board and this can kill your CPU sooner than you have thought. 1.648V is VERY VERY high for Northwood, and KILLING for Prescott. Even if you managed to mod it higher, the fluctuation will become greater and will yield your system unbootable, not to mention burn your CPU. This is not worth it. Go and get a faster processor and start from a lower Vcore again. What sort of cooling you have?

  • PCIE Slot saying "Empty"

I recently upgraded my pc with a GTX 970 card. It worked fine for a few days and now my PCIE slot says that it's empty. But my old AMD card is fine. I don't understand as this happened after installing  anew ssd drive and restarting my pc.
the card lights up fine and the fans spin as they should.
could it be a dead pci slot?
    my specs are
    intel i5 4690k
    8gb corsair vengeance
    gtx 970 :( kinda
    2 x 240gb ssd drives
    tb hard drive
    windows 8.1

nope, before the pc would black screen after plugging in the SSD, turned on AHCPI (i think) in bios and it all worked fine. restarted pc. nothing. i just plugged my old amd card back in and it seems all drivers are installed still. even though i removed the software, could this have something to do with it.
and yeah i reset the cmos and that didn't do anything. Starting to think it might be my board because the gtx didnt sit as comfortable as my amd r9 270x.
but it worked,  i was literally gaming 2 hours ago.
i doubt its the card as I checked the pins on the pci connection bit on the card and they are all fine , they match my amd card. the card powers up fine. etc. just in bios it says empty.
updated to latest mobo firmware. I've just ordered a new MOBO and hope that sorts it, otherwise its £285 for a dud card which was purchased in a shop about 150 miles away.
    any suggestions would be helpful.

  • [VIA Series] Can't get dual channel on P4 3.2 HT MSI PT880 Neo ?????

When I boot up it says 64 bit single channel, this is confirmed by CPU-Z.
    I bought  2 PQI 3200 512 DAH Dual channel memory sticks (Identical) bought in a single package ($159.00) when I got this Mobo and  machine ,  originally Fry's installed them in slot 1 and 2,javascript:void(0);
    noidea
I've moved them to slot 2 and 3 which accordinhg to the hand book and what I've seen in forums  should enable the dual channel mode. Still single channel.  I've set the bios to force dual mode and still I'm in single mode. I don't know if this is related but anytime I've ever tried to use top perfromance or best performance settings in BIOs it won't reboot and I have to clear the CMOS so no overclocking for me...... I have the latest Bios version 2.0,   just updated that from 1.90 todayand all the latest VIA drivers etc.

Other question, sitting here typing this and my CPU temp is 46 C.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm not sure what I've missed and I'm a noob at this stuff, would increasing the voltaqe help????

The online manual for the PT880 NEO-FSR says slots 1 and 3 are used for dual channel.
I don't know about the Via chipsets, but the Intel chipsets need the DDR voltage set to at least 2.65 for stable operation.
