[VIA] Which VIA 4-in-1's are best for a KT333

I just got a MSI 6380E (KT3 Ultra) with the VIA KT333 chipset.  I was looking at VIA's site, and wasn't sure which would be the best drivers for my system.  Since I don't have an SATA controller onboard, I don't want the HyperionPro package.  So that leaves the retro and Hyperion.  Which one would be best for my system?
Thanks,
James

from Viaarena.com:
VIA Hyperion 4in1 drivers are suitable for ANY VIA chipset - but they are particularly recommended for KT4## series, P4X4## series and newer, for example:
K7 chipsets: KT400, KT400A, KT600, KT880, KM400, KN400
K8 chipsets: K8T800, K8T800Pro, K8M800, K8T890, K8T890Pro
P4 chipsets: P4X400, P4X400A, PT800, PT880, PM800, PM880, PT880Pro, PT894
VIA Hyperion 4in1 drivers are compatible with any VIA chipset. Performance, however, is optimized for the more recent and the latest chipsets. Therefore some users of slightly older or legacy chipsets report that using the older 4.43 drivers they experience a more responsive system.
The driver package below is recommended for use with the following chipsets: MVP#, Apollo Pro## series, KT1##, KN1##, KM1##, KT2##, KN2##, KM2##, P4X2##, P4X3##, P4M2##
funny they don't mention the KT333, but i think 4.43 will be fine for you

  • Which computer screen and video card are best for editing photo's with CS6?

I edit my photos with Photoshop CS6, and want to buy a new windows computer and screen. What are good screens and do I also have to purchase a special video card? Greetings, Wil.
    [ email signature removed - see http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-3731 ]

I'm personally fond of a new Dell Ultrasharp U3014 monitor I got several months ago.  I have a video card a couple of years old - an ATI Radeon HD 7850 with 2GB VRAM, and it drives the big 30" monitor as well as my two older 20" monitors turned up sideways perfectly, to make a Photoshop editing station that's potent.  All the various Photoshop panels are on the sides, and the entire central monitor is available for the actual editing.
As far as computers go, I've yet to find a machine better for Photoshop work than a Dell Precision Workstation.  Others will of course have their own opinions.
It's possible to find off-lease workstations, such as the Precision T5500 system shown above, being sold used on eBay by refurbishers.  Depending on who you choose you might even get a Dell warranty (I did).  Their newer T5600 line is current, which makes the just off cutting edge systems cheaper.  You can score a good deal this way, but you need to educate yourself very well on the options before choosing a model with particular set of features.  Another member on here (JJMack) got a good deal on a Precision T5600 refurbed from Dell direct.  I hope he chimes in and describes his experience with his T5600.
    Some things to think about:
SSD storage is greatly preferable over HDD storage, and is well worth the additional cost.  Do not skimp here.  Get more than you need.  Consider building a RAID array of them.
More RAM is better, and much more is much better.
A good balance between individual core speed and core count is needed.  Too much of one and not enough of the other isn't as good.
If you want multiple monitors, a single modern video card that can drive multiple monitors is essential; don't try to run Photoshop with multiple video cards.

  • What compressor settings settings are best for 1080i  to output to DVD using DVD Studio pro?

What compressor settings settings are best for 1080i  to output to DVD using DVD Studio pro? I used FCP 6, exported using Quick Time.

DVDs are only SD. There was at one time HD-DVDs, which DVD SP and Compressor can make, but HD-DVDs will only play in Macs and, now obsolete HD-DVD players. HD-DVDs will not play back in standard DVD players or Blu-Ray players. If you want to make a "DVD will be played on DVD player for TV" disc, your only choice is SD.
If you want HD video on a disc, then you want Blu-Ray. You will need a Blu-Ray burner (Apple does not make a Blu-Ray burner so you will have to buy a third-party Blu-Ray burner), Blu-Ray discs and software that will make a Blu-Ray disc. That could be the latest version of Compressor, or FCPX, or Toast, or Encore.

  • What anti-theft solutions are best for the ipad?

    Hello,
I would like to know which anti-theft solutions are best for the IPad. I am ordering several for work and I would like to know. Thanks.

It depends upon how far you are willing to go.  Keeping it locked in a bank vault comes to mind but I suppose you want more flexibility.  Are you talking about physical attachment or just something to discourage a thief, or something to protect data integrity in case of theft? Realize that in many situations somebody may steal something and only later check if it has any value.  If it doesn't they will toss it in the nearest river, but you've still lost it.  As for iPads, a thief can reset one and it's like new.
Find My iPad - http://www.apple.com/ipad/icloud/#find - has to be enabled before device is lost.  It also requires the device be on and connected to registered WiFi network or data service, and not having been restored by the finder (if it was really stolen then the thief has probably restored it).  If you have activated the "Find My" feature, go to https://www.icloud.com or use the Find My iPhone app - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8
Setting up iCloud (requires iOS5) - http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/ios.html - includes activating the 'Find My' feature.

What do I need to up grade my computer? Which displays and or HDTV's might be the most cost effective to get?

Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

  • Which IE Tab extension is the latest/best for FF 14+?

The Add-Ons library contains several IE Tab extensions. Their names and version numbers provide no clue as to which is the latest or best for current versions of FF. I just discovered that I have 3 IE Tab extensions. Shouldn't I need only one? Which one?

Seems to have the best user reviews as of late.
BTW, not the best idea to have multiple similar add-ons installed, even if only one is enabled at a time. If you are looking to test and compare similar add-ons you are better using separate Firefox Profiles for each.

  • Which of these two hard drives is best for SD-only video editing?

Before I begin, I will start by saying that I realize the BEST hard drive is generally one's internal drive... but, ignoring that, my question is this:
I have 2 external drives available, and can't afford to buy a new one yet. Which of them is best:
    1. 7200RPM drive, connected via FW400.
    2. 5400RPM drive, connected via FW800.
I guess another way to phrase this question is, which is the more important factor, rotational speed, or connection method?
Just wondered, as I do not have a 7200RPM drive that can use FW800. I want to use the best of these two until I can afford to get a 7200RPM FW800 drive.
Thanks for any insight, and happy new year!

    William,
A few people had chimed in great advise, but I like to add my own. Perhaps you will find this useful.
The speed of the hard drive these days are hardly measured by the spindle numbers anymore. 7200 or even 5400 means really nothing other when it was made. That's the same as saying that my old 2.4Ghz Macbook is going to be slightly slower than a new 2.4Ghz Macbook or Macbook Pro. So just looking at the spindle rate is one thing. You need to look at drive generation, link speed, cache size, platter size and platter amount. For example, today's Seagate 7200 RPM drive is at 7200.12 and last year was 7200.11 (a disaster year for them as the drives would click themselves to death!)
Let's start with link speed. The reason why internal drives are faster (at least with the all in one iMac, Mac Mini and Macbooks) is the fact that even at SATA I, it can operate up to 1.5Gbps, which is fast. FW800 is no match against SATA II at 3Gbps and SATA III at 6Gbps. Secondly, the throughput is well sustained with the help of DUAL PROC (Dual Processors) available on 2 Western Digital Blacks (one in SATA II and the other in SATA III flavours!). Digital Blacks come in 500, 640 and 1Tb. BUT, there is a Seagate most fastest drive in the 7200RPM category that is a 2Tb Barracuda XT which has a SATA III interface, though I doubt mechanical drives will achieve such high rates. These drives will simply saturate a FW800 interface port easily.
When we are taking about throughputs, the 60-70MB/s the 5400RPM puts out is only good for the first 30 to 40% of its capacity, because they lie on the outer platter. As the head moves in, the throughput drops. This is a problem with a single drive. However, if you RAID 2 small drives together, then not only your throughput will more than doubled (saturate the FW800), it can be sustained for more than 40% of its stored capacity. Which is why RAID drives are used by professionals. It's easy to built a RAID drive. You can even buy one from the store. So if you want to buy a 1Tb drive, then you will be buying a 1Tb drive in 2 500Gb hard drive sizes RAIDed together.
Another method I use if I only plan to have 1 drive is to "Short Stroke" it. Short stroking is very popular in the PC gaming world. Basically, what they do is run a program like HD Tune to determine what the best sweet spot that would give maximum throughput before it drops. Say a 500Gb gives the best speed for 140Gb, then they would go into BIOS and force format the drive to 140Gb. For
yourself, you can partition 2 drives. First partition would be the smallest and that can be your "render" drive. The second partition would be for storage. It's quasi short stroking, but this will give you the most throughput if you need maximum speed for real time SD video editing.
And Tom is right, always have a separate drive for rendering and never rely on your internal. However, if your internal happens to be 2.5" laptop drive, you can stick in a Seagate Momentus XT drive with its 4Gb SSD cache, it's enough to reduce disk access to the main drive so that's what I use for my Macbook. That's my read and OS drive and the Firewire 400 as my render drive and it's barely doable. FW800 would be nice!
    Good luck on your purchase!

  • Which MBP do you think would be best for me (read inside)?

    Hello, thanks for helping!
I'm a current high school junior who has been avidly using mac products since I was 8 years old thanks to various hand me downs from my older brother over the years. About 6 years ago I got my first "new" laptop, a standard 13" macbook. Unfortunately, it's beginning to die. I've had lots of issues with it in the past for some reason, it just seems to have weird quirks such as issues with the DVD drive and some SERIOUS slowness that are minor enough I don't need to go pay to have them fixed but they're quite annoying.
Anyway, I've been looking into purchasing a macbook pro that would last me at least through college and hopefully part of the way into graduate school, because I know that student debt will make it really hard to purchase a new one until at least then. I use my laptop a lot, probably too much for my own good. My main things are searching the internet, writing papers, watching movies, ect.. but until my mac started failing on me I used to LOVE graphic design and playing games (the sims in particular) but I've had to give that up because my computer can't handle the huge graphics strain. However, because I've been away from it for so long I'm not so sure I'd be able to get back into it to the degree where I absolutely NEEDED the graphic ability (For instance, I doubt I'll be pursuing a career in graphic design)... but it would be nice to have.
So I'm wondering- which model should I get? Is the graphic capabilities of the 15" worth the extra bulk/decreased easy transportation ability? Are the graphic capabilities of the 13" enough so I don't have to shell out the extra $$?
Please help me out- I really appreciate your time!
    -Bria

If money is an option get the 13". If not get the 15". In 2 years you'll be wanting a new one because of all the latest and greatest features that will have come out. Get what you can use adequately now.

  • What Mac Pro specs are best for Photoshop and Lightroom?

I'm about to cross over from PC to Mac. I've got up to 4 grand to blow on it and would like to spend it as wisely as possible. I've decided to take the Mac Pro route, but am unsure what configuration I should go for to keep Photoshop and Lightroom working smoothly. My image file sizes are usually around the 300 Mb mark but they often rise to 700 Mb or more when layers are involved. My so-called powerful Dell PC struggled with these sizes.
Should I do the obvious and go for bucket loads of RAM and as powerful a processor as possible, or are there more effective moves? For example, would 8 core be a worthy improvement over quad core?
My image library is stored on separate drives so I could hold back on hard disc space. If any wiser head can advise I would be grateful. Just don't make the answers too techy. I'm no computer boffin.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Don't buy a MAC PRO now. New ones are to be released in the next weeks (maybe already today as today is Apples WWDC Opening)
    2. Lightroom and Photoshop can use all processor cores you have. So I would go with the cheapest two CPU Model. As an upgrade by example from 2.26 to 2.66 Ghz (current Model) will cost you more then 1400$ for only 15% more processor power which results in maybe 7--10% faster application perfromance.
    3. Don't buy extras at the Apple store.
    4. For the saved 1400$:
4a. get from a third party provider a total of 10-16 GB of RAM (10 are normally sufficient)
4b. Additionally I would suggest to get 2 fast SSD Disks with 128 GB (or if you can afford it) 256 GB . Put them in a RAID 0 Array. Put your OSX Files and Lightroom Catalog, Caches and current work files on it.
4c. Get two 2 Terabyte Drives and run them as RAID 1 for your pictures.  And an additional 2 GB Extra External Firewire 800 or Better eSata Drive for Backup purposes.
Have fun with a very fast machine.
Additional question: How are your current storage devices connected to you computer: USB, eSATA , Ethernet or Firewire?
If you don't know what some things mean, go to a good 3rd Party Apple Seller who gives you fair prices for upgrades.
