Vibration From HDD / Whirling Noise

I have used my 2.4/250 macbook since december and the hard drive is getting louder and louder. The sound is coming from the vibration of the hard drive I guess and the sound is muted when you rest your hand on the lower right corner of the macbook.
Does anyone have a quick fix since apple states this is a normal noise?

It is normal for it to do it starting at 3:00 am but not at 10 or 11 pm. At 3 am it starts its daily maintenance which only should take a minute or less. On the weekend it does weekly maintenance and once a moth it does monthly maintenance, all starting at 3 am.

I submitted a question last night but wasn't specific enough-- My MacBook Pro is suddenly making a whirling noise when it's on.  Sometimes it's  not too loud-- but other times it almost sounds like a tweeting--  there is nothing in the DVD/CD drive--   Is this something I should have looked at?

This is not normal. It is better to have it checked. Take it to the Apple Store.

  • T400 palmrest vibration from hard disk

Just took delivery of a new Thinkpad T400 and notice that I can feel the vibration from the hard disk drive on the palm rest, especially the right side.  I can't hear the HDD and the vibration is subtle, but just wondering if this is normal.  The disk is the 160 GB 7200 rpm drive.  Thanks, Dave S.

I'm sorry to tell you, but in may case, I had to send notebook to authorized service provider. They replaced mainboard and hard drive (!?). Now everything works fine, but puts shame on Thinkpad T series notebook.

    hi aLEXrara,
    Welcome to Lenovo Forums!
Im not sure if you will agree on me but the HDD should not exhibit a clicking sound,  but clicking HDD does not mean that it is bad and it is the HDD's fault.
If the clicking sound start just right after you press the power and the computer starts detecting your HDD,
First verify it is the HDD that is making the sound.
Try Removing the HDD and start the computer again, if there is not clicking sound that definitely is the HDD.
If you have another computer you can try checking the HDD status by plugging it in and using a scan like HDtune.
or Try using Software like HDD regenerator or the like.
If the HDD plugged in to another computer and still show detection problem, I believe it really has to be replaced.
    Regards
    Solid Cruver

  • SSD vs. HDD (especially noise issues)

I'm hoping for some expert feedback on how the new Macbook Pro works with the SSD as compared to the older versions with HDD.
I have a 2006 15" MBP. While gaming or running other video intensive applications the fan runs full bore, full time, and it loud.
I'm planning to upgrade to a new 17" MBP, and am considering drives.
Any experience with the SSD in these new MBP's and whether or not switching from HDD to SSD impacts the frequency the fan is needed?
I've read several reviews and opinions on SSDs. Many say that drives in general (SSD or HDD) produce very low heat compared to processor or video card. Thus, switching drives shouldn't impact overall heat much, or the fan. Others say the exact opposite, noting that switching to SSD cut heat and fan noise.

Any experience with the SSD in these new MBP's and whether or not switching from HDD to SSD impacts the frequency the fan is needed?
No personal experience with SSDs here, but no hard drive can safely operate at any temperature that would cause the fan(s) in a MBP to speed up. The hard drive is typically the coolest internal part of the machine because it is isolated from all the major heat-producing components. It's very unlikely that either a HDD or a SSD would ever affect fan speeds at all in any MBP.

  • HT203176 i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities and said I need to repair disk from a cd. did that, I got volume repaired from the external disk. when I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

    PLEASE HELP ME

    > When i log in bios hdd was detected but not available in boot priority menu. Just network adapter was there & now i cannot boot from hdd nither cd/dvd.
Does this means that neither HDD nor CD/DVD drive appears in the BIOS boot option?
Strange what notebook model do you have?
Did you try to set BIOS to default?
If not do this (press F9 and save the changes in BIOS)

  • How to create recovery media from HDD recovery image?

When I tried to recover a fresh Windows from HDD recovery my little son stopped the proccedure by accident.
When I tried to restart I get the message bootmgr is missing. I have a copy from HDD recovery file but din not create a recover DVD.
The question is if I can make a bootable recover DVD or USB file file from the HDD recovey file?
    Thanks!!!

There is a method to create bootable USB stick from recovery DVDs or ISO file - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD4103KB0000R01.htm but I dont think this will help you.
Problem is that such back-up is actually useless. There is also option to order original recovery installation disc. You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

  • Dvd won't eject, only repeatedly makes whirling noises as if loading

    I don't understand!
I put in a DVD into my laptop to watch. Granted, it's a burned one and so I thought initially the whirling noises of loading were necessary. Until finally I realized it was ongoing, without any stop! Now, the sound repeats if I attempt to eject the DVD, and otherwise it will not come out.
I don't know what to do, help!

In the Apple stores in the US, you need an appointment. If you just show up, they will schedule an appointment for you, but it may be a long wait. Bring your accessories such a power adapter as well.
No charge for an evaluation or minor repair at an Apple store, in warranty or out. These sorts of things are usually repaired free, while you wait, as long as no parts are required. If dis-assembly is needed, the Apple store will not charge you for minor repairs, but Authorized Service providers may charge a small fee.

  • H330 wont boot windows 7 from hdd or dvd

When booting from HDD the pc recgonises a fault in windows and says insert boot disc and repair computer.
when i change bios to boot from disc freeDos appears asking for time and date. when entered A:\> appears and anything typed is bad filename or bad command.
    Can anyone Help

    hi Bradders16,
If your system is booting in a free DOS then the HDD is fine, Beacuse the freedos is technically in the HDD.
One question though.. That WIndows 7 you're trying to bot from is that an installation CD or a HDD with WIndows 7 in it?
Also you system might be configure on a UEFI / Secureboot settings where you need to change these inside BIOS
TAP F2 while powering up the computer to boot into BIOS
    Under
       Exit TAB
Look for Os Optimization set it to disabled
       Start up TAB
Look for CSM and set it to enabled
You should now see Boot mode and Boot priority where you should change those to Legacy and legacy first.
        Security TAB
Look for Secure boot and disable it.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers!

Turn the Mac on (or reboot it) and press command-option-R as soon as you hear the startup chime. Hold the keys down until you see a globe, then release. When the Recovery Menu appears you choose Disk Utility and format the SSD for use in a Mac (Erase>Set Format to MacOS Extended (Journaled), then exit Disk Utility and choose Install OSX
You will need to be connected to the Internet and your Mac should detect your network and ask for a password automatically when Recovery Starts.

  • Q190 from HDD to SSD?

    Hi,
Can I upgrade my Q190 (57312246) from HDD to SSD?
I am looking to purchase the following SSD: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MZ-7TD250BW-Series-Solid-2-5-Inch/dp/B009NHAEXE/
    Thanks
    Solved!

    hi filippo,
Yes you can use that SSD Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch as the Q190 uses a standard SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide HDD as per this pdf data sheet.
You may also want to check Crucial's SSD Upgrade for the Ideacentre Q190.

  • Problem installing ArchLinux from hdd partition

I have a SATA drive mounted on a VIA Epia motherboard, but no CD drive, which is why I install directly from hdd.
Currently I have Zenwalk running, which only has Lilo (no grub even in the repos!!!). I copied to contents of the install ISO to a new ext3 partition and used the following entry in lilo (taken from this guide):
    image=/root/tmp/isolinux/vmlinuz
    label=ArchInstall
    initrd=/root/tmp/isolinux/initrd.img
    append="root=/dev/sda4 BOOTMEDIA=cd"
But it doesn't boot properly. It says:
::Initramfs Completed - control passing to kinit
    IP-config: no devices to configure
kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
kinit: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
    kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init
..and before all that it complains that it doesn't find anything new in /config and /packages, but these directories aren't suppose to exist, I guess, because they don't on the original iso?
Anyways, it looks like it's mounting /dev/sda4, but then dies because the init part isn't found. I had a problem with lilo warning me that the init ram image was too large, but then I added the "large-memory" option to lilo.conf and it stopped complaining.
    Thanks for reading,
    Benjamin

    I found a solution!
Aparently syslinux is very good for booting anything made with isolinux. I think it's pretty universal. So what you do is simply to mount the iso, copy the contents to a fat 16 partition, rename the isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg and then run syslinux on the partition. It's described on this blog:

  • Going from HDD to SSD+HDD

I have a 2010 First Gen i7 desktop iMac computer and am looking rather fondly at SSD drives to run alongside my 1TB Internal HDD. Boot and Apps on SSD, everything else on Internal, the usual set-up.
I know I can change the location of my home folder via System Prefs > Users & Groups > Ctrl+Click User > Advanced Options
What would be the best way to deal with the migration from HDD to SSD+HDD?
Do I do a fresh install onto the SSD and then point to the home folder left over on the HDD and delete the old system files around it?
Does restoring from Time Machine via the Lion install process give me the option of choosing a different disk to send my personal files to? (this would be proffered).
Do I wipe everything clean, restore the OS from time machine, then use Time Machine from the temperary user account to restore my personal files to the HDD?
I do have two external HDDs (time machine and "junk" drive) - do I use the terminal to copy my files to the junk drive (preserving structure and timestamps using the -pR flag), then copy them back onto the HDD once everything is wiped and continue from there?
The last options seems like the most realistic, but the second would be the most proffered (if possible).
What is the best way to do this? Anyone done it before? Anything I should be careful of?
    Thanks!

A clone of a HDD will have loads of empty blocks, all those blocks would be written to the SSD...
Incorrect.  Most backup programs don't do a block-for-block copy (though some have such an option on very restricted conditions).  They copy the files (like cp -rp).  So blank space on the source won't be the same blank space on the destination.
But serious question for a moment, do these Carbon Copy Clone drive 3rd party softwares have some kind of special function? Some people have crazy devotion to them and its peaked my interest as to why.
If you want to go through the "exercise" of creating lauchagents or cron tasks for constructing and easily changing scheduling backups, more power to you.  I for one just want to schedule the stuff, possibly change the schedule if need be, and move on to more important things like doing the work that actually needs to be backed up!   If you don't believe in scheduling periodic backups, well, that's another story.
Though, to be honest, I still question its usefulness when Disk utility does the same thing; select a hard disk ( "TOSHIBA MK2561GSYN Media" on my MacBook Pro), click "new image" and then click go. Then use restore in Disk Ulitity to restore the disk from the image - carbon copy goodness!
So do most other people that do backups, i.e., creating a .dmg (what you get from DU's New Image) is not the way to do backups.  DU's Restore, maybe, but I've never used DU for backups.
