VIC 1280 vs VIC 1240 + Port Expander

Hello,
What's the benefit of using VIC 1240 + Port Expander versus having a VIC 1280?? I don't see any.
Anybody has some inputs?

The port expander add-on will not be as costly as the 1280 VIC.  The  blades do not have 2 Mezz slots - they have a single Mezz slot and mLOM.  You can't install a 1280 into an M3 expecting this will leave one  additional slot available.   If you're purchasing M3's blades with the  1240 mLOM, it makes more sense to just add-on the expander rather than  add a full 1280 VIC on top of it. The expander also uses a fraction or  power as the 1280 VIC. The most important difference is how the BW is  aggregated
The mLOM + Expander can provide up to 40Gbps of aggregated/Port Channeled BW per fabric.
The 1280 VIC can provide up to 20 Gbps of aggregated/Port Channeled BW per fabric.
The mLOM + 1280 can provide up to 2 x 20Gbps aggregated/Port Channeld BW per fabric.
So you get no BW increase on the blade by using a 1240+1280 rather than the 1240+Expander.  You do however get 2 adaptors per device for the host to manage, rather than 1.
Keep in mind, to achieve the max BW capacity to the blades you require 2nd GEN I/O Modules (2204/2208).

Robert

    Hi Terry
When you run the lunlist, and lunmap commands, what exactly do you get? From the output you provided, looks like the adapter
can see the lun and is plogi into the storage.
Is this a new install or the server has been working before?
Is the storage connected directly to the fabric interconnects, or through a SAN switch?
If you don't see anything when running these commands most likely there is a configuration issue.
Can you see the adapter flogi?
Can you see the vhbas' wwpn on the stotage or the switch?

  • VOIP home lab with cisco 2620 and VIC-2FXO port

    Hi all,
I m considering building a home lab for studying CCVP, the lab would be based on the follow components :
    - CUCM 8.X (already installed)
    - A couple of soft phones running in VMWARE with IP Blue and CIPC (they are already in place and registered with the CUCM)
    - Cisco router 2620 with NM-2V and VIC-2FXO-M2 (for europe, I'm in France)
so here are my questions :
1/ it looks like the NM-2V comes with integrated DSP, so I should not need more DSP, I have got one PSTN analogic line only so I can make only one call at a time, please confirm
2/ my analog line comes via my home internet provider dsl box, i have already tried to connect an analog phone and it works, please confirm the router will be able to receive and place calls
thanks for your help, I m looking forward to begin my voice lab

    1. Yes, the NM-2V has built-in DSP resources for up to four calls (max voice port density with two 1st generation VICs). You cannot add further DSP chips to the NM-1V/2V, nor would you need to for what it does. You have one PSTN phone line, thus you can only make one call at a time. If you had a second line you could use the other FXO port for a second concurrent call.
    2. If the phone line works then it will work with the router to make and receive calls. As Gregory said, just configure dial peers for what you need to do.
Here is some info on the NM-2V:

  • Fabric Extender and Blade server connectivity(Cabling)

    Hi,
There is lot of information available about how a Fabric extender connects to the Fabric interconnect. e.g. SFP+ ports, cabling etc.
I am bit a confused, how does connectivity happen between the blade server and fabric extender inside the chassis.
The information available only gives us idea about the possible network cards in the blade servers.
I want to understand, how actual connectivity is done between the blade servers and fabric extenders.
Is it through some cables or anything else? Please help.
    Thanks,

  • Server Discovery - Discover Nic Presence Peer

    Hi,
I'm in the initial set up of 2 Fabric Interconnects 6248UP and 2 Chassis 5108 with B200-M3 servers. I'm getting the same error on all the servers in the discovery process, particularly in the "Discover Nic Presence Peer" process.
¿Can anyone tell me if there is a work around for this issue?
    Best regards!

    Victor,
Is that the only card installed in the server? or you also have a card installed in the Mezzanine slot? You will need to check physically cause that will not show up in the inventory.
How many CPUs do you have installed in these servers?  If there is only one, nothing can be installed in the Mezzanine slot but the 1240 port expander.
A reseat of the IOM might also help here since its interfaces are down, but before that, what is the exact firmware you are running and the CPUs model?  you need specific firmware to support the B200-M3s and specific firmware for some v2 CPUs too

  • VIC-1340 and 40G Ethernet

The datasheet for VIC-1340 is rather weird concerning support of 40G Ethernet
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/interfaces-modules/ucs-virtual-interface-card-1340/datasheet-c78-732517.html
The Cisco UCS Virtual Interface Card (VIC) 1340 (Figure 1) is a 2-port 40-Gbps Ethernet or dual 4 x 10-Gbps Ethernet, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)-capable modular LAN on motherboard (mLOM) designed exclusively for the M4 generation of Cisco UCS B-Series Blade Servers. When used in combination with an optional port expander, the Cisco UCS VIC 1340 capabilities is enabled for two ports of 40-Gbps Ethernet.
Means 40G ready ??? not available today ?
Confusion, port channel 4 x 10G is not equal 40G Ethernet. As long we don't have 40G support on IOM and FI, 40G I/O adaptor doesn't make sense.

    According to the support matrix
    http://www.cisco.com/web/techdoc/ucs/interoperability/matrix/matrix.html
    Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, 2012 and 2012 R2 are supported.
I assume your enic driver has below version ?
    Adapter Driver   = 2.1.0.27 (FNIC) / 2.4.0.19 (ENIC) / 2.1.0.12 (NIC Teaming Driver)
    Adapter Firmware = 4.0(1)
    Boot Code / BIOS =
Note 12: iSCSI Boot is supported. Both Appliance and Uplink ports are supported unless otherwise noted
Note 25: NIC Teaming driver is not currently supported with Hyper-V
Note 38: 6100 Series Fabric Interconnects and 2100 Series Fabric Extender is not supported

  • VNIC pinning to HW port channel

    Hi there,
    my question is the following:
given that you use the vic 1240 mLOM + 1280 mezz for "real" redundancy in a M3 blade + 2208 IOM, that creates 4 different port channels composed of 2 x 10GbE KR lanes each.
Then when creating a vNIC in your service profile and linking it to one specific fabric, this gives 2 port channel available per fabric. How is the vNIC pinned to the port-channel, round-robin or? Is there any way to identify those PC + pinning with the FI CLI or GUI?
    Cheers,
    Nicolas

I'm new to the UCS blade and chassis world and have the same setup as above, a 1240 and 1280 VIC in a B200 M3 blade. did you get an answer to your question?  how were able to build the vnic profiles with the mulitiple vics?

  • L550/010 USB port not working properly, non-standard USB ports

I wondering if anyone can shed some light on this strange problem I'm having with my laptop USB ports.
    Background.
I have a USB device (CED-M2 USB Chronograph). The device comes with Windows 7 software to upload fps readings.
The CED has a calculator style keyboard - so you can lookup data without the laptop.
My L550 PSLWSA-01000Q, is running Windows 7 professional.
    Problem.
When I connect the CED into the USB port the buttons on the CED no longer operate, As soon as the USB lead is disconnected the buttons work. Uploading the data doesn't work either. The buttons freeze occurs as soon as I plug into a powered USB port (even if user not logged into Windows and programs are not running).
I've installed the upload program onto two PC's at home (Vista Home and Windows 7 Home) and both PC's connect to the CED and upload fine. Furthermore, the CED push buttons works perfectly! So, this leads me to think that the hardware or signals from the laptop USB ports is not standard.
I've tried all three laptop ports (e-Sata/USB and normal USB ports), same problem.
Any ideas what could be causing this problem?

    Hi Jerry
    Firstly, thanks for repsonding.
All L550/010 USB ports appear to work well on other devices (Sierra Wirless card, HP optical mouse, HTC phone), doesn't matter which port (USB, Esata/USB) all works fine with these units.
I've tried connecting the Chrono via a USB 4 port expander - same problem, no comms, chrono buttons locks up. Connect to Home PC running Vista Home and Windows 7 Home and works fine 9 - just can't take those to the range.
The Chrono unit is self powered (9V Alkaline) and it's new, so USB supplied 5V is not a problem.
The buttons seize whenever the laptop is powered up. Also, if the chono unit is powered down, connecting the USB lead to the laptop turns it on (wakes up). This wake up functions on both home desktop PC's and laptop (good), however, with the laptop I can't power down the Chrono as the buttons don't work.
Whilst laptop connected, and rebooting the Laptop, the Chrono buttons will work just before the Press F2 for setup screen comes up - so could it be electrical.
I've downloaded the latest BIOS from Toshiba and Intel chipset too - no change.
I got the unit to connect once tonight - when I plugged my mouse in at the same time - USB configured for mouse, and whilst doing that the Chrono worked. Once mouse working, Chrono stopped. Can't repeat results.

  • Fried USB ports?

Hi - new user here. Wondering if anyone can shed light on a problem:
Just moved house, and have been setting up iMac. However, when I tried plugging in my Belkin USB port expander, and then plugging in applications to that device, the Mac told me the USB was overdrawing power (hadn't seen that message before).
Since then, none of my USB ports work, which means I can't use the keyboard or the mouse. Also, upon restarting the machine, it tried to find a Bluetooth mouse. Maybe it can't find the regular one, so figured it should look for a remote device.
Can anyone help? If I have fried my ports, if there any succour to be had?
    Thanks a million in advance....

Sorry to hear of your problem. I assume you unplugged the port expander and then tried plugging just the keyboard in to your Mac with the mouse plugged in to the keyboard? If so, did you try using different ports? Imacs have 2 or 3 USB ports depending on the model so you want to try each one. Make sure to just try just the keyboard and mouse with nothing else connected even if anything else connected is powered off. I don't know how it would automatically try to find a bluetooth mouse unless bluetooth was turned on so you might just want to turn bluetooth off for now until you figure out whether you fried your USB ports or not.

  • Usb port available amp

I have an HP Envy m6-k025dx. What is the avail amps from each USB port, 2.0, 3.0, and the charging 3.0?
Does the same DC power supply power all three ports?
I am asking because I have an Un-powered port expander . ON my previous HP laptop the USB port's power was blown because I had too many things plugged in, ( from 2005)
I could not find any USB power avail amp specs in the user manual.
    Thank You

    David Crabtree1...
When booted in 10.4.x launch Activity Monitor and see if anything "Epson" related, is in the list. (Applications-Utilities folder)
BTW- Command-1 (one) will Show Activity Monitor as a Text-List view or just go to the Monitors Menu and click on it.
If there is a Epson(process?).app running it may have the printer already tied up and may not let Chooser stake a claim to it because it sees the USB port busy. It may work after you quit or force quit anything related to your printer.
Don't forget that the printer may need a 30 second power off / reset anytime there some print bug. This is the most common issue with printers.

  • Support for Windows Server 2012R2 Hyper-V

Windows Server 2012 R2 is officially available from last week. What are the plans for 2012R2 Hyper-V Support on UCS platform /B200M3 servers/? Also Nexus1000V for SCVMM 2012R2?

    Hi,
We have Windows Server 2012 R2 (x64) configured as Hyper-V Servers running a Cisco UCS. We use Cisco UCS B200 M3 Blade Servers with a VIC 1240 (including a Port Expander). It works just fine. I have also succesfully tested VM-FEX and SR-IOV.
I must add that there are only 2012 drivers, although they work properly. In case you have a FlexPod and use iSCSI. NetApp does not have a DSM driver (MPIO) to support 2012 R2 yet, so you have to use the Microsoft DSM driver.
I am also waiting for Cisco and NetApp to release updated drivers that officially support Windows Server 2012 R2.
I hope this information is usefull to you. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • B200M3 and Vsphere 5.1 - Unable to set NIC speed to 10gb full duplex

    Hi,
    My first post here!
I got 4 B200M3 blades with VIC 1240 and 1280. I have installed vSphere 5.1 on them. The blades are configed with a number of NIC's.
The NIC's get a speed of 20gb full duplex(set on auto negotiation) and i would like to set them to 10gb full duplex. When i try to change it in vSphere i get an error message
"Call "HostNetworkSystem.UpdatePhysicalNicLinkSpeed" for object "networkSystem-1264" on vCenter Server "xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" failed.
Operation failed, diagnostics report: Forcing 1000Mbps or faster may not be supported on this network device, please use auto-negotiation instead"
After some searching it looks like you sometimes have to upgrade vSphere with new drivers to get these things to work?
Anyone got any ideas that can help me?
    // Fredrik

    Hi Fredrik,
    A few quick questions:
    1) What is the driver type and the version on the vnics? here is the HCL for the required driver versions:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/interoperability/matrix/r_hcl_B_rel2.04.pdf
    2) Did you install 5.1 direct or did you upgrade from 5.0? For this blade you need to use the CISCO OEM Custom ESXi image. We still do not have the 5.1 image published, however the 5.0 and 5.0 U1 are avaiable for use. Here is the download location:
    https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/details?downloadGroup=CISCO-ESXI-5.0.0-U1-28AUG2012&productId=229

  • Order of upgrade

I have a large ucsm 2.0(3c) infrastructure utilizing VMware 5.0 auto deploy.
Need to upgrade to 2.2(1d) and VMware 5.5 u1 still using auto deploy.
Any thoughts/documents on order of upgrade? Some of the components I am using: 6248 fi's, vCenter, esx, srm, heartbeat, ibm svc sra, fnic & enic driver with cisco custom image for auto deploy, ibm svc fiber channel san, b200 m3 vic 1240, b440 m2 vic 1280.
I was thinking the order would go:
    ucsm fi firmware
    heartbeat
    vcenter
    auto deploy
    srm
blade firmware one at a time along with new VMware image at re-boot. New fnic & enic driver as well.

Regarding UCS, the following document gives you all the details
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/upgrading/from2-0/to2-2/b_UpgradingCiscoUCSFrom2-0To2-2.html
Upgrading Cisco UCS from Release 2.0 to Release 2.2
Don't know the details; but if this is a operational environment, I would be very careful, do some tests first, and schedule a huge maintenance window.
UCS Update is the easiest step.
    Good luck
