Victim of ID theft

Long story short I had a room mate that stole my debit card, gained access to my online banking, and subsequently drained my account.  I pay my verizon bill through this account and I always have a payment setup on the 1st..  I've called verizon several times, spoken to numerous people, including supervisors (before my services were suspended), now that my phone is turned off I've had to resort to your crappy chat function thus getting no where.  I would like to thank verizon wireless for turning off my phone when I need it the most.  I will be terminating my services and writing a letter to your board.
-Dean

Well your bank will refund your roomates theft if you filed a police report. You did file a police report?
This will put money back in your account and your room mate in jail. Why would you give a password to your debit card to your roommate ? very strange.
I don't even give my wife my banking password or pin numbers. And I don't need hers either.
Once the money is pkaced back in your account, usually within hours if you go to the bank with a police report you can pay your bill. 800-922-0204 from any phone will get you through to customer service.
And yes its not a valid reason to be angry at verizon. Tbey didn't steal your debit card.

  • Was recently a victim of ID Theft.  Had my iTunes account and store hacked.

Realized that my ATT account was hacked and the hacker set up a new phone/bought a new phone and was in the process of trying to divert everything to another address.  Then received charges on my iTunes account that my bank was successful in reversing charges forsoftware/other items that I did not order over the internet.  Set up an Apple ID while moving earlier this summer and discovered now that a second one exists.  I own an iPad2, OS X Mac and iPhone.  Was hoping to avoid security issues like this and go totally Apple, but am now questioning it. How do I consolidate all info into one Apple ID and get back in control of this situation to keep things simple?  The person who hacked the account bought and downloaded apps that I did not want or need (only use the "free" apps) plus some music.  It was only by "wiping" my payment info that I was able to stop them.  Thank you for any guidance you can provide.

Did you create a completely new account or update the existing one ? If you created a new account then any
content bought/downloaded via the old one will remain tied to that old account, and it can't be copied or transferred to a new account, so you will need to get your old account re-enabled in order to download updates to its apps.
You might be able to get it re-enabled it via this page : http://iforgot.apple.com
Or you might need to contact Apple : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
If you've changed the password on the old account but the iPad isn't recognising it, then try logging out of your account on it by tapping on your id in Settings > Store and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' it on the iPad.

  • Can I ensure that I am not victim of identity theft when I sell my laptop?

I am selling my old macbook and I have install CDs from my new macbook pro (but not, I think, from my old macbook). The only personal information I have entered is when buying stuff from iTunes or generally online using credit card info. Is there a way I can ensure this info is not found - is it even possible?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Again, the Mac OS license requires that you include the discs with your Mac when you sell it. (And I can't tell you how many people post to these boards and say "I bought this used and I didn't get the discs ..." Ugh.)
Regardless of how little you think you did on the Mac, you left three or four years of your life's history on the machine, which can be a lot for someone nefarious who knows what he's doing. Plus, a legitimate perspective buyer will probably be happy to find a clean, like-new Mac when she opens it for the first time.

  • How can I see the IP address of somone who used my iPad that was stolen to log into my app-store?

I recently fell victim to a theft of my iPad. Albeit it was an old one, it was mine.
Logging on to app-store with my iPhone, I have been prompted many times for "confirmation" of my password and for security questions. Clearly, someone has been trying to log on and has failed. My only guess is that they intend to keep the iPad and download music or whatever. But being prompted for security questions, leads me to suspect that somone has my apple ID but has been plugging away at passwords to buy stuff.
If I was able to locate the IP address (as the unit is only Wi-Fi), I can pass this onto the authorities and perhaps retreive the unit.
Is it possible to load a location app remotely from here and have it load up when the stolen unit is online again?
    Many thanks y'all

Did you have 'find my iPhone' activated on it? Because if you go to iCloud.com you can log in there and you can remotely lock or wipe your device.  From what I hear, the police won't do anything about going and fetching stolen iPads and iPhones, but if you have find my iphone/ipad/ipod/mac turned on then it will give you a map of where it is.
Just keep in mind that sometimes iTunes does ask you for your password regardless, and only a few weeks ago apple brought in security questions, so everyone had to fill in security questions for their iTunes account to make it more secure If all else fails, ring Apple cusomer support and they might be able to bar your account or something, however you may have to make a new account (the might be able to set it up so you have all your previous information on a new account)
    Hope this helps!

  • When Firefox first loads, there is threatening script which quickly comes up and disappears, but I want to freeze and read it; but how?

I am the victim of Identity Theft. The perpetrator has taken over as Roaming Administrator of my PC's. I once had 7 of them, but she has stolen/destroyed all but 2. She is taking online classes at college from Microsoft, and puts her class notes on one of the 2 surviving ones, which was returned to me by law enforcement. She has denied me access even to my "My Documents" subdirectory, &, in an ASUS AMD 8-core PC w/16GB of RAM, with a 3D blu-ray DVD reader/writer & 52-memory card reader/writer built in & a 2TB Western Digital eSATA HDD, all of which I designed & built, she has hidden the entire directory tree on the hard drive & rendered all of the other devices disabled so that the system is kaput; all because I was amassing evidence against her for law enforcement & the FTC.
The question at-hand is how I screen-freeze Firefox as it is loading so that I can read the JavaScript she has written at the bottom of the banner. It is something about how she has accessed my Norton Identity Safe Vault, changed the password on me, & shut off & denied me access to my 2 Facebook accounts & others I am not quick enough to read. I need to screen-capture this message for law enforcement, because they STILL, after a year & losing a total of $223,000 from my bank account to her, don't have a case file with them! PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME! Katrina has actually hired a hit-man whom we have captured on surveillance video trying to shoot me in the head! She has also hacked her way into my router, changed my password & disabled the reset capability of the router so that even my ISP can't reset it! Imagine what YOU could do with $223,000! I am elderly, broke, and have lost almost 250 pounds because of her! If I live long enough, I want to see her in federal prison. If I die, I want her to die by lethal injection in Washington State for First Degree Murder!
FYI...I have used Firefox since its creation. The last time she wiped it off one of my systems & I reinstalled it, she caused it to install in Swedish. She has stolen the keys to all of my paid programs, & the companies now believe they actually belong to her, instead of myself. Norton 360 Premiere thinks I'm an intruder on my own machines, and Symanted has disabled my account, and will not communicate with me anymore. They gave her my Vault with more than 200 usernames and passwords! With GoDaddy, I had 17 non-profit SSL domains, for which I paid in excess of $8,000 to secure for 10 years with 21 email accounts. She obtained my SSN, impersonated me, demanded back the money I had paid, and they sent it to her. She stole the phone on which I had 2-step authentication, and now they won't let me near my accounts! I've had the same Gmail account for 8 years. Google opened up my password-secured YouTube account to 70,000+ strangers and pornography, and, after being LinkedIn's nominee for International Businesswoman of the Year, 2013, Google opened up my Wallet account to 2 other Identity Thieves to make purchases in my name, and they say I don't exist.
Lastly, she has poisoned our indoor spa with bio-terroristic flesh-eating parasites in the form of hybridized, skin-burrowing arthropods that killed our dog, cats, and dozens of birds in our special-needs avian sanctuary. I barely survived an 8-day stay in the hospital in June in, in "grave condition with toxic encephalopathy" because the parasites are immune to all parasiticides, and had crossed my blood-brain barrier. My husband has heart attacks, strokes and seizures constantly from them. I can no longer walk.
It is but one question I have asked, but your answer could be the key to stopping her from destroying what is left of our lives. With that JavaScripted message, she has cut me off from thousands of friends and family who have no idea what has happened to me. I live in a desolate, isolated corner of rural America without so much as phone or text service. All I have is the Internet and Firefox to keep me alive. If I can freeze that message and show it to the Whitman County Sheriff's Office, for whom I am the volunteer computer expert, they will accept their first-ever case of Identity Theft, and pursue her. It's bad enough that I lost the family fortune that my parents worked their whole lives to amass; I've lost my credibility, my self-esteem, and my will to live.
If you can help me, I plan on writing a book about the whole traumatic experience so that innocent others won't have to suffer the devastating nightmares as we have. Ours has been called, by the experts who should know, the worst case of Identity Theft in the history of the crime.

    Hi,
Troubleshooting a start up script can be difficult. There are some third party programs that also keep logs of start up programs, however for Firefox this may be different.
Is Firefox a startup program? [http://www.winxptutor.com/msinfo32.htm]
Its also possible to check the Web developer tools for any scripts in a page: [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Debugger]

  • How to restore/retrieve my files from external HD backed up by Time Machine

I'm recently a victim of car theft and my MacBook Pro, iPad 2 and external hard drive was stolen from the car. A friend of mine is lending me his MacBook Air to temporary use until I get a new MBP. I use Time Machine and Time Capsule to do frequent back up of all my files. I am attempting to restore my files on this MacBook Air, but I need assistance in trying to retrieve files/information from the external hard drive that I have attached to my MacBook Pro. My previous research on Time Machine/Time Capsule is that it will also back up external hard drive as long as they are attached/mounted to my MacBook Pro during back-ups.
How do I restore/retrieve the files or folders from my external hard drive using Migration Assistant. Do I need to get another external hard drive? Should I get the same exact brand and type of external hard drive?
I hope that someone can help me with this? Like most of us, my entire life's work in on my computer and hard drive. I need to be able to retrieve this valuable information.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to help m

Sorry you had such an experience.. not the first I have heard..
Having your entire life on the laptop is a concern!!
The pondini knowledgebase will give you an excellent starting point. as recovery is not necessarily simple in this scenario.. as the external drive might or might not have been backed up depending on the settings..
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Look at Q14-20
Particularly 16 to restore to alternative location.
You will probably need another disk, just because the disk in the air is small. It does not have to be the same size or model.. just get one big enough to restore everything.

  • Personal information

Bought new iphone. At sign up AT&T demanded my social security number. Called them about this but they refuse to accept bank, trade vendor or any other references but my personal SS number. Am returning the phone to your store tonight. No one should ever have to give out information like this, especially to a company who is already known for abusing customer private information.

Thanks Matt, for one of the few polite replies to my question. I was surprised at the number of rude responses. I've been the victim of identity theft and can tell you it's very unpleasant and costly. Currently, At&T is being sued by the EFF for giving others access to terrabytes of customer information and I can't see where something as trivial as a cellphone is worth the risk. I did ask if there was any way around their policy and two different reps said no but the store I buy from was very nice and said no problem with returning the product,
    Regards,
    Scott

  • Poor Customer service unauth charges iTunes over Paypal

I just thought I would share this exchange with the community. Do yourself a favor and remove your billing method from iTunes. You can expect this treatment when it occurs. Not only does it say that iTunes takes no responsibility for your account being insecure, it also displays a singular lack of understanding on their customer service rep's part. Again, this transaction occured with Paypal as the method, not a credit card. I've since changed all my information.

    Dear ****,
It’s Abhi here again and I hope this message finds you doing well.
I completely understand your frustration with the unauthorized purchases that were made with your iTunes Store account.
Dealing with unauthorized purchases is not something Apple takes lightly. I'm sorry that I can't resolve this for you myself, but under the circumstances the iTunes Store can't reverse the charges for those purchases without chargeback orders from your payment card issuer.
Please ask your card issuer to cancel the card, investigate the security of your account, and send chargeback orders to the iTunes Store. If you have any more questions about this, please don't hesitate to let me know.
    Sincerely,
    Abhi,

    Hi Abhi,
Thank you but you haven't answered my question regarding the charge. Will iTunes be responsible for this or do I have to approach Paypal?

    Dear ************,
It’s Abhi here again and I hope this message finds you doing well.
Thank you for submitting the requested information. We verified your account information and reenabled your iTunes account.
Please change your account password and security question immediately. Changing the password and security question will help to prevent anyone else from using your iTunes Store account to place orders without your knowledge. You can change your password using this website:
    https://appleid.apple.com
To update your security question, click "Return to My Apple ID" after resetting your password. Then click Manage Your Account, sign in, and choose the "ID and Password" tab. Be sure to enter a security question to which only you would know the answer.
To create a strong password and increase your account's security, I highly recommend that you follow the suggestions outlined in the following article:

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you.
    **** Abhi,
I have already changed the password. I would like to reactivate the account. However, this does not fix the fact that I had a 30 dollar illicit charge. This was done through paypal which my account was previously set up for and not a credit card - are you suggesting I contact them about refunding the money? I would expect that since the agreement is through your Apple that your company would cancel the gift certificate and refund the money. By the way... I have not put my iTunes information in any other account other than iTunes itself and purchases for giftcards cannot occur through anything other than iTunes with . I have no idea how someone could have gotten my information.
My information is as follows to your questions below:
    1) Old billing address: *****************
    2) Previous purchase information (from my personal e-mail); I believe this was my last purchase:

    Dear Shannon,
Thank you for contacting iTunes Store Support. My name is Abhi and I am glad to assist you today.
I understand that you are concerned about the unauthorized purchases that were charged to your credit card. I can certainly realize how disappointing it can be when something unusual happens like this and I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
To prevent further purchasing, I have disabled your account and have disallowed your credit card from being used on the iTunes Store. Please note that you can enable your iTunes Store account in the future by providing specific information to iTunes Store support as described at the end of this email.
I urge you to contact your card issuer as soon as possible to inquire about canceling the card or account and removing the unauthorized transactions. You should also ask them to launch an investigation into the security of your account. Under the circumstances, the iTunes Store cannot reverse the charges for those purchases without your card issuer initiating the refund request.
I strongly recommend you change your account password immediately. Changing the password will help to prevent anyone else from using your iTunes Store account to place orders without your knowledge. To increase the security of your account I highly recommend that you follow the suggestions outlined in the following article:
iTunes Store: Best practices for protecting the security of your account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4156
If you suspect you are the victim of identity theft, consider following these recommendations:
    - Contact the fraud departments of any consumer reporting company to place a fraud alert on your credit report.
    - Close the accounts that you believe have been used without your knowledge.
If you would like your iTunes Store account to be enabled, please reply to this email with the following information:
    1) The billing address listed on the account, and
    2) One of the following:
    - the order number of your most recent purchase
    - the name of any item you've purchased using this account
I will use the information you provide to investigate the possibility of enabling your account. Please note this investigation could take several days.
Thank you for the patience and understanding. Have a great day!

I have had a similar issue with Customer service and am still trying to get it resolved. I had unauthed charges on one of my 2 iTunes accounts but it was credit left over from a redeemed gift card. I have no credit card attached to my account. I let iTunes know and they disabled the wrong account. After 2 weeks of emails with customer service it appears that I will be getting the money added back to my account. They said it would take 3 to 5 business days. The account that was disabled is still disabled with no updates from iTunes. From what I see in your post the responses I got are the same. They must be working from a script.

  • Mystery account

I recently tried to add a third line to my account and was denied. The Verizon CS Rep said I had an account that had a $647 charge off. This is also being reported on my credit report. My current account is over 7 years old and has always been paid on time. I have never had a Verizon account other than my current account. The mystery account was opened around the same time my current account was opened. I called the number the CS Rep gave me and they transferred my call to another department who then transferred me to the fraud department. No one in any of these department's can give me any information on this account other than when it was opened and when it was closed. The fraud department told me that in order to get this resolved I have to file a police report and the report has to state that I am a victim of identity theft. I do not want to file a police report for something that is over 7 years old Also, was this identity theft or a mistake on Verizon's part? I'm not sure who to contact now to resolve this and have it removed from my credit report.

If Verizon ever thought you were in default they would have or a collection agency would have tried to collect.
The third line is not the issue now, it is the erroneous information on your credit report and why did you not check the reports for this harmful information? The credit bureaus allow you a free report every year.
You will need a load of assistance to get this off your credit bureau reports.

  • Airport loses signal every few days

Hi there, I have an airport express which I love, but recently it keeps losing its signal. My ibook and both my mom and dad's ibooks will not detect our airport. I tried changing our channel so it doesn't interfere with our neighbor's networks, which usually works too, but basicallly every 2-3 days, our signal dies. I usually just unplug the airport, and plug it back in after 30 sec. and that works, but its getting annoying. Any thoughts? I'm really tired of our signal being interrupted.
    ibook Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This has started happening to me on a daily basis.
I would like some help/answers too.
    Hi Jeffrey Eddy!
So far during 2007 there have already been one major OS X update and several Security Updates that may have closed holes that might have existed in wireless operations/configurations, or may have made other changes. We don't know for sure, as most of that infomation is typically not made public.
To conform your system to these changes, you will want your base station's firmware to be up-to-date, and your OS X version to be up-to-date. It sounds as if your AirPort Express firmware might not be up-to-date. As anything older will lead to a problem of some sort, it should have the current version 6.3, linked HERE. You can check what your current version is by opening the utility "AirPort Admin Utility" and it will be listed below the Express photo, at the bottom right, as "Apple Base Station V."
Using the Network panel of System Preferences, it also wouldn't hurt to delete and block access to all other wireless networks other than your own that are listed on the AirPort/AirPort pane in the "By default, join:" selector which is located in the middle of the pane.
Rename and reconfigure your own network while you're at it. For that, use "Network Setup Assistant" which is opened at the bottom of the Network panel by using the "Assist me..." button followed by the blue "Assistant..." button. First name your network configuration - you're not naming the network, but the new configuration name that will be displayed on the Network panel's "Location:" selector. Continue on, and in response to "How Do You Connect to the Internet?" activate the radio button for "I use AirPort to connect to the Internet wirelessly." And continue on until you've completed setup of the new network configuration.
Before I switched my setting it woud just randomly
jump to a weaker network signal in the middle of
    work.
The default setting of your AirPort is: "If no recent networks are found: Ask before joining an open network." Therefore, your AirPort could only have jumped to another network signal if you had edited the default setting, or due to your willingness to trespass onto the wireless networks of others, which has the same effect. Using someone else's unencrypted network to make online purchases is a good way of becoming a victim of identity theft, if you like that sort of thing.
I always get the warning "connection to base station
not found" so I think it's either the Express itself
    or the Airport.
It's probably neither, but a faulty configuration on your part, or due to lack of current firmware in the Express.
I also have an Xbox360 logged into
Live constantly (direct wired through a gateway) and
I never have a service interuption.
This would have nothing to do with your wireless issues.
I have heard a rumor that air traffic can disrupt
wireless service. Is this true? I live about 5 mi.
    from Port Columbus.
No, not true. Since most of the population of the country, if not the world, is within 5 mi. of an airport or air traffic, how would all the wireless cell phones work?
Kindly refer to the Apple Support article: AirPort: Potential sources of interference

  • Funny Things going on

My computer HAS been compromised and I also believe I am a victim of Identity Theft.  I would like to know, however what this oneindex S-1-5-21-777828251-2651864509-2973719067-1000 means...why it is on my computer as a temp user account and what all
I can do??  Can anyone help or believe me on this??
As far as the being compromised, I went to a website to do some browsing.  I knew an employee that worked at that particular place, so I typed their name in before the website and noticed I was being tracked.  I had my friend do the same thing
and they weren't tracked.  Now here's the thing....if you go under this particular website by their name only, there is NO TRACKING....but if you use this person's name...there IS TRACKING but ONLY when I use MY Computer!!!!  Can anyone explain to
me what is going on here???

Well "S-1-5-21-777828251-2651864509-2973719067-1000" would be an unresolvable security identifier (or SID), which generally relate to permissions which have been granted to a user on the system, but the user account has since been removed (or where the machine
was previously on another network/domain, had permissions assigned for users on that network, and has since been removed from there so it's no longer able to resolve the user details from the network).
While it might indicate an issue relating to the compromise it could also simply be a permission setup previously for a user who's since been deleted (the permissions don't automatically get removed).
There's a discussion relating to finding old permissions like these here
http://helgeklein.com/blog/2012/07/finding-removing-orphaned-sids-in-file-permissions-or-busting-the-ghosts-built-into-windows-7/ and if I'm following the details listed here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243330 it looks like from the "S-1-5-21-" beginning that it would relate to a domain user account.

  • Will be away from my Time Capsule for 2+ Months

I'm going to be away from my Time Capsule for 2+ months starting next month.  Unfortunately it isn't an option to take the Time Capsule with me as it also funcitons as a broadband server for my home security system.  What I'd like to know is, if I purchase a 3rd party external hard drive, can I use TIme Machine to back up to that drive while traveling and then resume back-ups with Time Capsule upon my return?
If so, what do I have to do to start backing up to the new drive and what will I have to do when I come back (beside be ready for really long back-ups in both cases)??
    Thanks!
Oh, and BTW, I'm not too keen on going the iCloud route as I prefer whole machine back-ups (I've been the victim of laptop theft and Time Capsule SAVED MY SKIN!!!) versus just file back-ups and I haven't made the jump to Lion yet either.

If there are files on the TC.. do a back up of those to USB drive.. you can do a direct archive via the airport utility of the TC.. Then you might be able to use the same USB drive for backups on the move if you partition it beforehand.. but I am not sure having one point of backup is good idea.
You are very calm.. accepting almost.. of a fairly intolerable situation.
I hope you can still afford to insure your home and contents.
Insurance companies are great at taking your money but they don't hand any back with too much glee and vigour or timeliness.

  • Bad server response

I have Safari 1.3. I used to never have any problems with Safari. Then, i started having sites that i can't open. I get an error message that says "Safari can't open this page. Bad server response." At first it was just an occasional site. Now, i encounter them fairly often. For example I can't use wikipedia, I can't use Photobucket. I can't open purevolume.com. The pages open fine in Netscape.
Safari doesn't have this problem on my iBook--just the Powerbook.
Does anyone know what is causing this? It started before I updated to OX 10.3.9. Is there any way of fixing this?
    thanks

thanks for the suggestion. However, this has been going on for months. I clear the cache several times a day because i was a victim of identity theft where someone got information from my computer somehow, i don't know how, but at the time i didn't have a firewall or ecryption or anything. Now i have all that stuff but since then, i empty the cache frequently as a security measure.
I also manually threw away the safari cache and icons. apparently clearing the cache doesn't get rid of those. I threw away my safari prefs. i reinstalled 10.3.9 and java, repaired permissions repeatedly.
I don't have a clue what's wrong, what it is about these particular pages that safari can't open on this computer. For a long time, it was just one or two sites where it happened. Now, it's happening much more, since i installed 10.3.9. I don't know if there's any relationship to that. I also installed 10.3.9 on the iBook and Safari doesn't have this issue on the iBook.
I wonder what these pages have in common.
I have Safari Enhancer on the powerbook and not on the iBook. I wonder if it could cause this problem.

  • Is it possible to hack an iPhone 4 remotely using only a laptop?

My fiance' had a strange interaction with a person at McDonalds today.  She was on her iPhone 4, on Facebook, and a person came and sat near her, opened a laptop and started to hit on her.  He had no food, and proceeded to pester her for a few minutes before he finally got the message and left.  He got right up, closed his laptop, went to his car and left.
Can an iPhone be hacked in a scenario like that?  There has been no unusual activity, but having already been the victim of identity theft, I'm very paranoid.
So, what do you think?  Creep or crook?

There is a possible explanation for what he was doing. McDonalds hotspots are not secure. There is software available that can record the traffic going over the hotspot. If you record a few minutes worth of packets you can find the user IDs and passwords for the email accounts of anyone using the hotspot to check or send email if they have not set up SSL or TLS for their email accounts. Likewise for logging in to web sites. Just about all banks and other financial institutions require SSL to log in, but many smaller retail sites many not. So this is another source of data that can be used for identity theft.
