Vide playback on G5 choppy

Video playback on my G5 is really choppy and lags.
I've got 2GB RAM.
Any ideas on how to speed things up?
Andy

Is your Quicktime up to date (7.6.2)? Are you trying to play an HD video?
Here are the iTunes hardware requirements for video playback.
-Playing videos purchased on the iTunes Store requires a Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or 1.0GHz PowerPC G4 or faster processor
-Playing HD-quality videos purchased on the iTunes Store requires a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor
-512MB of RAM; 1GB is required to play HD-quality videos
-Playing videos also requires at least 16MB of video RAM

You'll need to transcode teh H.264 to a more stable and useful editing codec. It's in the manuals and we see several H.264 questions every day around here so it's pretty easy to research.

  • IMovie 09 playback(full-screen) choppy during titles and transitions.

When I insert someting like a moving title, or a fading transition into my movie: the full-screen playback (and not the playback on the viewer) gets choppy or skips a movement. It specifically happens where the screen should be fading/transitioning or when a title should be moving/fading onto the screen. I have all the updates for 09 and I'm pretty sure that if this is the case on a full-scree, it would defenitely happen on a published exported version.

  • Video playback is still choppy....

I've tried the settings suggestions from Apple and nothing seems to be helping the choppy video playback. When downloading music, or video I can't even watch the video at all-- it just freeze frames, but will still play audio. I also tried to watch mpeg4's in Quicktime, with iTunes minimized and it still doesn't work. Anyone have any fixes or suggestions for this problem, or is it just my computer?

    Finally, My video display return!
    Please refer to this
Troubleshooting iTunes for Windows video playback perfomance issues
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303706
    My steps:
    1. Disable Direct3D video acceleration in QuickTime
2.Increase Display screen resolution(not color quality)
I increased the display to the highest resolution from 1024X768 to 1280X1024. Video works! But the characters for highest resoution is too small,I return to original resolution 1024X768. Solve my problem.

  • Cuda playback mode is choppy but software playback is not ?

Hi everyone, I'm having choppy playback only when on CUDA playback mode. if I choose software only playback is fine.
any idea what can i do to fix it? it starts happens since I update to mavericks.
only 1 layer video will do drop frames and freeze at 1080p 24fps
I really want to use Cuda I used to do lots of AE stuff links and I used to playback lots of video layers with no problem,
    thanks!

Just want to report that I fixed the problem.
the choppy issue starts after mavericks installation. at the time of the osx installation I download and install the cuda drivers that adds the CUDA icon on system preferences. That was enough for premiere to show cuda options as playback. But today I also did the installation of the Nvidia Driver manager from the nvidia website and that fixed the problem.

  • Itunes playback over airport choppy when anything else running

    Hi,
I have my iTunes library stored on a Lacie Big Disk connected by USB to my Airport Extreme 802.11n. My speakers are wirelessly connected to an Airport Express used as an extender. The setup works fine if nothing else is running, but if I turn on bittorrent, for example, it chops up and becomes unusable. This happens even when monitoring the speed of bittorrent shows less than 100k combined up and down. Any suggestions for why my 300 Mbit/s gets clogged by 100k of traffic? Thanks a lot.

Some additional information, perhaps: the Time Capsule icon remains on my MacBook's desktop after the hourly backup is made. When I manually eject it, the interruptions are fewer and only happen when either my MacBook or my iMac are backed up.
So perhaps question #2: why does the TC icon remain on my MacBook's desktop, while it doesn't on my iMac's?

  • Choppy playback with mxf files...

Hello.  I have been working with Premiere Pro CS3 for quite sometime until just recently.  Then last week I installed Windows 7, then Premiere Pro CS5.5 along with various updates.  I usually work with DVCProHD (Panasonic), 720p, 60p.  I just started working on a new project and playback is very choppy, whether the footage is rendered or not.  Everything else works fine.  My computer (purchased in 2008) has Dual Intel Xeon 5150 (10.64 Ghz total), 4GB DDR2-667 FBDIMM RAM (4x1GB), and an ATI FireGL V3350 256MB PCIe Video Card.  I am using a dual monitor set up as I used to do with Premiere Pro CS3 and Windows XP (with no problem before I went to CS5.5).   I checked the settings for the Mecury Playback and it seems to show that it is selected but also grayed out (can't be changed to anything else).  Anyone have thoughts on why the choppy playback?  Even Premiere 6.0 never gave me choppy playback  like this.  Thanks in advance.

    > Exactly how much RAM is Premiere Pro CS5.5 able to use at maximum?
All of it. That's one of the reasons that we ported Premiere Pro to be 64-bit.
Are all files of all types giving you choppy playback, or just some? If it's only some files, then tell us as much as you can about those files.

  • Playback in edit window of PE8 is bad quality and slow/choppy

I just bought a new PC (yesterday!)  so I could use this software and make movies.
It's running windows 7, on HP pavilion p6310, 64 bit, quad-core processor,1 T hard drive, NVIDIA geforce 9100 graphics, 15-1 memory card reader.
My camera is a Canon ZR 850 mini DV.
    Project setting: NTSC-DV-standard 48kHz
i ran msconfig and shut down what I could.
I updated quicktime and new drivers from NVIDIA
My clips are beautiful in Photoshop's organizer. They're great when i preview them in premiere. When i bring them into the edit window playback is terribly, choppy, and grainy and just plain bad. Will this change when my project is complete? or is this the quality of my finished project. What have I done wrong? What more can I do?
I've heard people talk of "rendering" on this forum. Not sure if that is something that I have to do, or if it is done automatically.
    Please advise.
    Thanks so much.

    Hunt,
    Yes, I capture with firewire.
    I updated PrE8
read that article, it was very helpful,
I do have another hard drive I use to back up all my pics and videos,
I don't know what particians and controller type is,
I changed the monitor to 100% instead of fit. It doesn't look any different to me, just smaller. I don't have the quality settings, just as you thought
I'm not sure what GPU accelleration and Open GL settings are?
I'll look over the OS optimization tips too. Don;t know how i missed that.
Thanks so much for your help.
    Neale,
Thanks for your advice. The one thing on my old PC I hated to give up was Nero. It was installedon my old PC by someone in my husbands office and i don't have the original disc to put it on my new PC

  • Choppy playback in Premiere CC2014

After upgrading from CC to CC2014 playback is very choppy and inaccurate. Same project worked great in CC. Also cannot get Directlink to AE to work ( greyed out).

I have finished the project mentioned and actually started a new project - but that one does not even play back altogether now ( this morning it did)  and it only has audio and jpg - stills... but since I did not change anything else on my machine since the upgrade ( except for also installing Speedgrade, which is why i wanted to upgrade ), I wonder what the possible problem could be?
Did you Direct Link the new project to SpeedGrade? That can cause sluggishness with certain GPUs.
What are the frame dimensions of the stills? Stills over 4000 pixels in either dimension can cause performance issues.
Is CC different in regard to CUDA/graphic card use?
As time goes by, the weaker and older GPUs tend not to work very well, especially if VRAM is less than 768 MB. There are two 5870s, one has 1 GB VRAM which is OK and the other only 500 MB, so not so good.
I do not see my 5870 listed for CUDA support ( neither for CC ) but does that mean CC2014 may not be working altogether?
Well, it's an OpenCL card so that's why it's not under CUDA. It should work, just not with GPU acceleration if the GPU is not supported.
    Thanks,

  • Choppy Playback after 7.2 Upgrade

I also upgraded my Final Cut Studio to 2.0
Now when I open up DVCPROHD files in Quicktime, the playback is terribly choppy (and vertical resolution is jaggy) at all window sizes. If I open it up in Final Cut, it plays back fine as usual and the resolution is great.
I had no issues before this upgrade. What's the deal?

    I've experienced something similar.
I was watching an HD music video in 720p and it looked fine; played smoothly and had a crisp picture.
But after installing Quicktime 7.2, the same video now plays choppy when put in fullscreen, and the video looks a little jagged. However, if I watch the same video in Front Row, it plays perfectly and looks great.

  • Playing files over a network - choppy & stuttering playback

I have all my movies on a Maxtor external hard drive connected to my iMac. This is shared out over AFP so my powerbook can see all the files.
I can play mp3s no problem, but if I play any AVI files in Quicktime, the playback is extremely choppy. When the Maxtor drive was connected to my Windows PC and I connected using SMB, there was no problem.
Is this a AFP vs SMB issue? Is there some way I can tweak Quicktime to cache the files before playing them? Should I be using a different player (e.g. VLC)?

1: probably an obvious one, but the house is wired with CAT5 wire. is the CAT5 that much faster than the airport?
Category 5 cable includes four twisted pairs in a single cable jacket. It is most commonly used for 100 Mbps networks, such as 100BASE-TX Ethernet. (If you're using CAT5e, it will handle data rates up to 1000 Mbps.)
The AirPort, like most 802.11g standard routers, has a max data rate of 54 Mbps, and is distance/interference dependant...so achieving the max rate is questionable. On the other hand, the newer routers, based on 802.11n, have a design max data rate of 540 Mbps.
2: is the airport just not able to stream the data fast enough for movie play? i know i'm asking for a ton of data to fly through the air.
Basically, that's correct, the AirPort will not be able to stream the data fast enough for movie play.
3: any DVD player apps that have a streaming-buffer that would help?
Not really. Most folks who are attempting to do the same thing you're trying to do, have resorted to wired connections for streaming video content.
4: what are the optimal setting on the airport to ensure the highest throughput of data? jiggering the multicast rate (... what does that do anyway)? interference robustness enabled or disabled? does the channel or b/g or g-only matter?
Removal of all sources of WiFi interference; Interference Robustness disabled; set g-only. Channel will only matter if there are other forms of interference or other WiFis present.
... or am i just trying to suck a watermellon through a sodastraw here?
    Yep! Pretty good analogy...

  • Choppy Flash Playback on MacBook Pro 15"

    Hi everyone!
We're having problems on two brand new MacBook Pros with Flash presentations. Basically, when you play a Flash movie on these devices the playback stutters, gets choppy (audio is almost unbearable), and is otherwise unusable at all. Has anyone else experienced this? The same presentations work fine on older G4 PowerBooks. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I finally figured this out. It was the version our client embedded into the movie. Turns out it was all rolled into one. newer Flash player bundling worked fine!

  • Why do I get choppy playback in Adobe Premiere Pro cs6?

    The playback is really choppy.
    What I am using:
    (Brand New) iMac
Processor  3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024 MB
    Nikon D5100 DSLR
    Shot in 1080i 30 fps
    Thanks

I cannot believe how bad the playback is in Premiere Pro CC, and, how little help there is out there. Raw MOVs from a 5D plays back like garbage on my laptop or 8 core Mac Pro. Its ridiculous. I'm better off transcoding to ProRes and using FCP which works, or God forbid, go back to using Avid like its 1999. Unfortunately It has nothing to do with the two graphic cards or 32 gigs of memory I have either, it just plays back like garbage. Using the JKL keys is completely awkward because the lag between hitting the key and playback is excruciating. I'm at 1/2 resolution and it cant play back footage without being choppy. no FX, and the footage and hardrive is on a 6g SSD. This should be screaming.
Adobe, seriously, live up to your other products standards, they are so good, why does this one just bomb?
