Video auto play in safari

I'm using an iPad 2 and have upgraded to ios6. Now, when I open a web page that has embedded video, it auto-plays and then I have to search all over the page to find the video to stop it. It's extremely annoying. Is there some setting that I need to change to make it stop?
Thanks

I confirmed that the inclusion of the autoplay attribute in the HTML5 video tag does indeed cause autoplay in iOS 6 (I went to the nearby Apple Store and tried a test page on the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 and the new iPod Touch eschewing the iPads since mine are already upgraded to iOS 6).
HOWEVER, the latest version of the Safari Developers Guide I could find in Apple's development sites still clearly states that this should not be possible in Mobile Safari as a safeguard against eating up users' data without their permission.
Thus, I'm curious whether this was an intentional change on Apple's part or some bug that got through the QA process for iOS 6.
Has anyone been able to find official documentation from Apple clearly stating that autoplay should now work in Mobile Safari?
Thanks!

  • Videos auto play in safari

    Hi,
I am facing an issue on ios7 in safari, if I open any website that as video embedded in the page, it starts automatically without  even clicking it. say money.cnn.com any article that has video it starts playing the video first covering the whole screen. How to stop this behaviour.
Its an iphone5 with 7.0.2 ios version.
    Thanks

    Hey there iosamitg,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like any webpage you go to that has a video, starts the video automatically without you first tapping it to play it. I have a few recommendations for you here:
First I would start by closing all the running apps on the phone:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
From: iOS: Force an app to close
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
When you have done that, next I would restart your iPhone.
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists after that, I would try backing up your phone to iTunes, then restore your phone.
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Before you restore your phone from your backup, try setting it up as new, and verify the Safari app works as expected. Then restore from your backup, and test the issue again.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Facebook iOS App - Video Auto-Play Interrupts Airplay Stream

Has anyone else noticed that since Facebook implemented video auto-play that if you are on wi-fi, have the FB app open, and are streaming over Airplay, that when the app encounters a video and plays, the Airplay stream drops, requiring you to restart Airplay manually?
I am guessing this was an unintended result of Facebook implementing this feature, but it's annoying. The only workarounds that I'm aware of are to change the FB app setting to only allow videos to play over wi-fi and then shutting off wi-fi on the phone, or just simply using one iDevice just for streaming and another for checking the app, but it is darned inconvenient. I reported this to FB as a bug, but I doubt that they will reverse their decision about it, unless Apple tells FB to change this.
Can Apple require Facebook to add the ability to turn off auto-play completely in the app, since the app's behavior is technically interfering with an Apple-specific system service (Airplay) in iOS?

Just as an addendum: the behavior of the FB app technically violates Apple's Human Interface Guidelines for managing audio interruptions:
    https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/userexperience/conceptual/ mobilehig/Sound.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40006556-CH44-SW1
Specifically, the app does not display audio controls when the video plays, nor does it resume the existing audio stream (the Airplay stream)  when the video finishes: "If your app doesn’t display any media playback controls that people can use to play or pause audio, your app should always resume previously playing audio when an audio interruption ends, regardless of whether the Should Resume flag is present."
I'm surprised that Apple didn't enforce this guideline when FB submitted the app.

  • Why do some videos opened/played from Safari only open to about a 2" square. Can't get a full screen view?

Why do some videos opened/played from Safari only open to about a 2" square. Can't get a full screen view? I have Safari 5.0.6 and QuickTime Player 7.7. Thanks

    Hi, Daryl -
If you moved the G4 around to make room for the new machine, that could have jarred the processor loose. It's not unusual for that to happen to an older machine, though it usually happens to RAM or cables, not to the processor.
Years of heating and cooling can loosen a connection and cause some oxidation of the contacts; subsequent moving of the machine, coupled with just a bit of thumping or torquing of the chassis, can cause the connection to fail. Reseating the connection not only makes it secure again, it usually wipes the oxidation off of the contacts.

  • I can't get iOS Development Videos to play in Safari or iTunes

If I go to https://developer.apple.com/videos/ios/ and try to play any of the videos listed, they will not play. I am using Safari 6.0.1 on my MacBook Pro which is running OS X 10.8.2.
When I click the "Watch now" link for the video I want to see, the player is show at the top of the page. If I click the "Play" button, nothing happens.
If I try to download it in iTunes (11.0), the video appears to download without any problem but, there is no indication that the video downloaded in the video list (the little button still reads "Get" for the video I downloaded). If I click the video in the list, and hit the play button, nothing happens.
It's hard to believe I am having problems with both sources...what am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Well, I guess those videos are not supported by the current version of iTunes.
I originally had iTunes set to "Open in 32-bit mode" so I could watch these videos. But apparently, since I upgraded iTunes (and OS X), that setting no longer enables those videos to play. When that selection was enabled (Open in 32-bit mode), I experienced the behavior above. Once I de-selected that setting, and re-opened iTunes to try the video again, I recieved a message that stated "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes."
So, I guess I am out of luck?
    This is hard to believe.
here is the issue, described again, in a question that has gone unanswered since October:
Unable to play developer video in iTunes

  • I can't get videos to play on safari on my IPad without adobe flash player

I can't get my iPad to play videos on safari without using adobe flash player?

Flash is not supported on the iPad - and as Adobe have announced that they are stopping development on all mobile versions of it, it probably never will be.
Browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter, Puffin and Photon 'work' on some sites, but judging by their reviews not all sites. Also some websites, especially news sites, have their own apps in the App Store.

I would love some assistance on this. thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Getting videos to play in Safari

I haven't been able to get Safari to play videos anymore. Here's some stuff that may be helpful:
Sites that won't seem to work include youTube and Apple's own trailers page.
I have begun to use a new ISP that says I should use Explorer or Netscape.
    I'm using a Wi-Fi connection.
Also, some pages will not fully load. The bar on the top where the address is show that it is no longer loading, but I often find that I cannot view the entire page.
Could these just be problems with compatability? If so, where can I get Explorer or Netscape on the net that is free for my Mac?

Do you have Adobe Flash Player for Mac OS X installed? If not, you need to download and install it. If you want Netscape, download it from Netscape.com. You can try to download Internet Explorer 5.2.3 from here.

  • Embedded YouTube videos not playing in Safari OS X

    Hello
Recently, I've had trouble playing embedded videos (for example on tumblr or on Laughing Squid).  I can see the space the YouTube box is meant to be in, but it's blank.  I can play them on YouTube though.  This started before the Yosemite update.
I use AdBlock but it happens whether it's on or off.  I've updated my Flash, cleared my Flash and Safari cache but to no avail.
This happens both on my MacBook Air and on my desktop, both running Yosemite and fully updated Flash etc.
Does anyone know if this is a widespread bug or if I can fix it easily?
    Thank you!

Ok, I fixed it. Go to some embedded Flash video, click to run and then right click to get Global Settings for Flash. Go into Storage and make sure you aren't blocking any data from being stored on your computer. At the very least choose the "ask me" setting. (For good measure I also went into Advanced and clicked to Delete All Data associated with Flash. But when I restored Block for data storage the videos stopped working, so that seems to be the answer.) I'd be interested to hear if this works for others.

  • Vine videos auto-playing fullscreen in browser

    Hi all-
Has anyone else had issues with embedded videos (such as Vine) opening up in fullscreen when visiting a website? There's a blog that I frequently visit (that has a mobile-responsive format) that occasionally posts Vine videos. When the page loads, the Vine will start playing in fullscreen and loop/repeat. Even if I pause it and/or hit the "back" arrow to go back to the website, it keeps opening the same video in fullscreen. Very frustrating and there's no way to stop it!
    -KC

I can not find an option to allow videos to be played IN my browsers. Every time i click onto a page with an embedded video it opens and plays in a new quicktime window. I do not wish it to do so, i wish to be able to watch them within the browser.
This is beyond your control. The person who programmed the web site coded the page the way he or she wanted the content viewed. Had the page been programmed to display the content in the browser, then there are scripts to intercept display and open them in the QT Player. But as it is, there is nothing you can do here.

  • Facebook videos not playing in safari

    Hi guys.
I have had an issue with safari for a while where facebook videos (i.e. flash) won't load. there's just a black space where the video should be. I tried uninstalling flash, resetting safari etc. to no avail. I gave up and used chrome instead which works fine.
Yesterday I bought a nice shiny new retina macbook pro and when I first booted it as it was downloading yosemite, the videos worked fine in facebook once I downloaded flash. Now I have transfered all my settings/apps/files etc from the time machine backup, the videos have stopped working. I have uninstalled everything adobe, reinstalled flash only, gone into the library and deleted the safari files etc. and this has had no effect (other than my frustration levels).
I have tried the delete all option in the flash settings, and the videos didn't work when I didn't have chrome installed.
Can any one help? It's pretty irritating....

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

  • Video auto-play error

I have a video that will play when you touch anywhere on the screen. It's set to play full screen in the video overlay panel and I have a button to turn it on.
I'm really puzzled because I have other videos that work fine. It's just this one page with the one video that is being weird.
    Thank you!
    Maryanne

The button is set to play the video. The video is in a small frame (with no preview) but set to play full screen. That's how I have it set up on the other pages, but that might not be correct?
    Thank you Bob!
