Video behaving badly on macs and windows7

I have an interactive PDF I'm working on, which I've uploaded here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5075782/Interactive%20PDF/Sample%20ebook%20new.pdf
The mp4 video was made in Premier pro at a size of 1920x1080, (I wanted to use the built-in media player in acrobat 9, but it doesn't respect the aspect ratio strictly enough, and looks much better using QuickTime, so I adopted for the legacy option v6 to embed the video)
I maintain the "original H264 encoding" and "snap content to proportions"
To fit the video on all screens, I opted to resize the video to 960x540 in a floating window, allowing the user to resize (respect aspect ratio turned on)
On XP all is great
On a mac, the window looks fine at 960x540 but resizing is very tricky as the window won't let you resize to any size you want, also it allows you to disregard the aspect ratio
On vista and Windows 7, resizing is fine but the player controls disappear, the work around is to set the theme to basic, but this is not ideal.
Has anyone else come across this problem and resolved it?

Trying to get video chat working between mac and pc

im trying to get video chat working between a mac and pc
pc-running xp with aim 6.0
will updating to aim 6.1 fix this ?
we can text chat with no problem
we can not audio or video chat

Hi Z,
Lets check the Port Forwarding at your end.
Does this Zyxel have UPnP at all ?
If so use that and disable the Port Forwarding.
If not then these ports need to be forwarded.
I will list with Protocols as some device need these.
TCP 5190 for AIM Login and text chats (can be substituted for 443)
TCP 5220, 5222 and 5223 for Jabber (the last is for OS X servers and GoogleTalk)
TCP 5298 this is part of the Bonjour set up for iChat if you have other Macs
UDP 5060 this is for the SIP negotiation that iChat needs
UDP 5678 this is where the visible invites come and go out on.
UDP 5190 for AIM file sending and Group chats
UDP 16384-16403 This group of 20 ports is where any Audio or Video chat takes place.
As the 443 port is below 1024 (the NAT threshold) you should not have to Forward this.

Photoshop CS5 Video Render Never Finishes; Mac and Windows

Hello,
I've tried rendering a video using Photoshop CS5 and it never finishes. The progress bar reaches the end but the process never completes. The video is only three seconds long (it's the video rendering exercise in Adobe Photoshop CS5: Classroom in a Book, Lesson 12). A 3D postcard is being rendered. First, I tried the settings in the book, H.264, Medium (quality), 15 FPS, 700 x 700, one-pass. That is only 150 frames! It never finished. Since then, I've tried all sorts of output formats from a 70 x 70 pixel WMV file to standard-def DV/DVCPRO NTSC. Nothing finishes. My Mac Pro has 12 GB of RAM with over 8 GB free. Photoshop is at the latest update.
Now, here is the kicker. I had my students try the exercise in the lab at the university where I teach. We have very up-to-date Windows PCs in our lab and Photoshop CS5. The exact same thing happened on the PCs with six of six students, the render never finished.
I've searched to no avail for a posting about this problem. I'm stumped. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

The serial number is platform specific. So your current serial number will only work on the Mac platform. You will want to purchase an additional license for Windows. Alternately once the Creative Cloud is available you can subscribe have one install under Mac OS and another under Windows of the soon to be current version, CS6, if you would like. I have made the switch to MAC from PC and I use Sony cameras/video recorders. I used the Sony PMB program to store all photos and videos. Now I need to transfer my photos and videos over to my MAC and I do not know how to do this as PMB is not supported

I need to transfer all my photos and videos from my old PC stored in the SONY PMB program to my new fabulous MAC desktop. I do not know how I can do this. Plus for future photos/videos, how can I upload them from Sony products ?

When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Do you know where the actual photo files are located on your laptop? If so, you can transfer them to the Mac over a LAN or by saving them to an external HDD, thumb drive or burning them to a disk. Then you can import the photos to the iPhoto app that came on your new Mac.
It would be the same process for the videos, however, it would depend what type of video files they are, as to which Mac app might allow you to view them.
BTW, since your Mac is new you need to Accept the iLife apps; iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie into your Mac App Store/iTunes account. Open the MAS, sign into you account, go to the Purchased pane and accept the apps.

This may look like SPAM or unsolicited ad, but let me say that I have no other interests that avoiding people hours of research and tries I did, the software is open source.
That said, I finally managed to create a set of scripts to easily convert video from avi files or even mkv, to .mp4 files iTunes compliant that you can load on your iPhone.
The great news about this, for us, non-english people, is that it takes subtitles and burn them into the movie, so you can watch your favorites divx movies with subtitles.
This is mainly intended to run on Linux, but works nice on Mac OS X too.

Apple licensed ActiveSync from Microsoft for accessing an Exchange account via ActiveSync with the Exchange Server, which provides Push access for recieved messages, and over the air syncing for Exchange contacts and calendar events with the Exchange Server.

CS5 Mac and Windows7 Compatibility?

What is the compatibility of CS5.5 or earlier files created on a Mac to CS5.5 on Windows 7? We are changing suppliers and need to move a large number of files from Mac to Windows 7. Will we be able to read/edit them easility? Anything we need to do to ensure this goes smoothly?

The issue, unfortunately, is not the compatibililty of the InDesign documents themselves cross-platform, but rather, the fonts!
If you used OpenType fonts (either OpenType CFF such as those licensed by Adobe and others or OpenType TrueType) or Windows-format TrueType fonts with your InDesign documents on the Mac, then you should have no real problems going from Macintosh to Windows. If, however, your documents used Macintosh format Type 1, TrueType, or .dfont fonts, you will have issues to deal with since Macintosh Type 1 and TrueType fonts are stored in a Mac file's resource fork (as opposed to the data fork which is visible under Windows) and .dfonts are simply not supported under Windows at all.
For any such Macintosh Type 1, TrueType, or .dfonts, you will need to substitute the equivalent Windows format Type 1 or TrueType font or reformat the document preferably using OpenType fonts for the fonts that don't “cross over” directly. If you have such Type 1 or TrueType fonts, check your font vendor to see whether they can provide the equivalent Windows versions (same font name, same font outlines, same metrics although obviously a different format and file name); often they do and if you can get them, you could save quite a bit of reformatting work, albeit at the possible cost of relicensing the font(s).

Best video format for mac and pc

Hello,
I recently embeded an mpeg video, flv, mp4, and swf video file to my web page. I then asked several pc users to go to my page and see if they could view the animation clips. They were were able to view all clips, but the mpeg and flv clips automatically downloaded to their computer. I don't want that to happen. The mp4 did not download, and it worked as well.
How do I stop this from happening? I ask becuase it seems flv is used by mac and pc users alike, and I think I may use said format.
What is the most widely used video format by both mac and pc users?
... should I just stick with mp4 since it worked without down loading?

Colin has pointed you in the correct direction.
I'll bet you're using just plain text "links" to your files. That method by-passes the browser plug-in and can cause issues (especially on Windows).
You need solid html code that gives the browser plug-in all of the needed instructions.
Another thing that may have happened is that your fast start files have lost their fast start abilities. This happens with any fast start file that is then edited and uses a regular "save". Save As will restore the fast start feature (even in files that do not normally have it).
AVI is dead. Do not use it.
Many WMP formats (codecs) are not yet ported to the Mac OS so that delivery container should also be ruled out.
H.264 Video codec (default in most Tiger app exports) also requires the viewing machine (Mac or PC) have QuickTime version 7 installed.
Since not all machines can install QT version 7 (requires 10.3.9 or Win 2000 or XP) maybe you should rule it out, too.
So.
What are we left with?
Maybe QuickTime format using MPEG-4 Video codec and AAC audio?
They would only require QuickTime version 6 be installed. Since version 6 has been around for over 5 years it may be your best option.
But you're still going to get complaints from PC viewers.

What is the best practice for formatting ext drives to be used by both Mac and PC users?

I have scanned what is available in the community about this issue and wondering if anyone has anything new to add. I need to create backup drives of department files (large photo and video) that both we Mac and the other PC users can access. The only consistent rec I see is FAT32, but that seems to have size limitations. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

The problem with FAT32 is that 4 GB or bigger files can't be stored. In this case, and as you have a Mac OS X version that supports it (10.6.5), you can use exFAT, compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and Mac OS X (10.6.5 and later).
To format a drive with exFAT, do this on a PC. If you do it on a Mac, a PC won't be able to read it. Apart from this, you will be able to store the files you need onto external drives, as exFAT hasn't got the limitations that FAT32 has.
Another option is to use NTFS, but you will need a third-party application on your Mac to be able to write on your external drives

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

I have recently purchased an ipod video, i have two computers, one mac and one windows, the mac has my music on and the windows has ripped dvd's on which can be converted to ipod video compatible files. can i connect my ipod to both computers and add the files i wish from each one???

Yes.
There's two ways you can do this.
1. Format the iPod using the iPod Updater on the Windows XP machine. This will make the iPod Windows-formatted, and it can be used on a Mac or a Windows machine.
The downside to this is that performance will suffer on your Mac. Transfers and mounting times will be slower and longer.
2. Keep the iPod formatted for Mac. Since Windows cannot read an HFS+ volume natively, you'll install third-party software on the Windows machine (such as MacDrive) which will allow a Windows machine to read/write to a Mac formatted volume.
The downside to this option is cost and stability. MacDrive is not free, and who knows how Windows will behave in the long run.

Video display issues with Mac Pro and GeForce 7300?

I'm just wondering whether anyone else has experienced any video strangeness with their Mac Pros with GeForce 7300 cards? Basically, twice now I've had the mouse cursor stop responding and the entire screen turn black, then a second later everything's back to normal (with the cursor moving and the display back). I seem to recall a similar issue on my Windows PC with a Quadro FX 1100 card, so I'm hoping it's just a video driver issue.

I am not sure if its the monitor, the MP, or the video card, but, I have had my computer completely replaced after reporting to my local Apple Store about my G5 fans over heating and my monitor either not being able to wake or refusing to sleep. I called AppleCare and did all the normal trouble shooting but they said take it in to store. But now that I have a brand new MP 3.0 I am getting the same issue but no fan noise. I have a 23Cinima HD (the strore said it was fine when they had both my computer and monitor in) but last night after hours of inactivity the monitor had the screen saver on but didn't got to sleep. I then put in to sleep but when I got up this morning I couldn't wake it up. When I got my new computer (3 days ago) I didn't migraite any of my old stuff. I have been slowly reinstalling all my software and updated anything before I install anything else as an added attempt to not have any bad files. I have 2 gig of ram and 500 hd with the 7300 card. I am at a lost I checked and rechecked all my setting. The only other thing I have connected is my airport extreme base.
Any idea's anyone?
Ops one last issue, I have blown my apartment circut breaker three time while attempting to start the new PM and once it did it when I was trying to wake it just by tapping the space bar. Is it the computer being more power hunger?

Mac and iPhone4 contact searches behave differently

I have ~1000 contacts. One of them has an email address beginning with "c.s". Searching my mac address book for "c.s" narrows it down to that one contact. Searching iPhone contact for "c.s" gives a list of dozens of names that start with "c" and "s". Is it treating the period as a wild card?

The mac version CAN play videos inside PPT right on a slide. They are linked, but they still play ON the slide. Basically anything the QT player can play, ppt can play right on the slide. I assumed PPT for windows could do this with formats OTHER than QT.
You're saying that NO VIDEO FORMAT IN EXISTANCE can play ON a slide in PPT for windows? I find that hard to believe.
I've seen many folks post here suggesting AVI works just fine and can be played right on the slide in PPT for Windows. Mpeg1 is normally 320x240 and well, honestly it looks like crap on a 1024x768 screen (and most people these days do NOT want to show a 320x240 movie at regular size on a large slide), so I stand by my comments made previously, unless someone can post that they tested an AVI and PTT for windows actually bumps you OUT of ppt and into a player (full screen or not). I just can't imagine that's what it's doing. QT on the other hand, is pretty much broken except in the way you described, playing it in the QT player, which is why no one wants to do that.
