Video blacked out in disk image

hi the movie looks good in idvd preview. but the burned disk video plays black, only sound and subtitles.
the media is .avi
what is the fix?

Good morning, Robert.
The video format .avi can cause complications, but it's a good sign that iDVD preview can handle it.  In burning a disc, iDVD only burns a single video layer and normally cannot handle subtitles unless they are combined with the video itself.
Can you provide more details about the source video?  (in the source video can you turn the subtitles on and off?  when you use Quicktime to view the video, what are the video properties -- eg, more than one video track/video format/etc? have you previously burned a DVD from this source?)

We can hear audio, but video blacks out every few seconds; picture comes back when we hit the tv's volume button. Everything seems to be plugged in well. The picture even starts out being sort of dim. And it goes through phases of working fine but then will randomly start blacking out again.  Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Have you tried turning the TV off and on again.

  • Yet again YouTube videos blacked out in Safari but not in Firefox

    Hello,
Is anyone else suddenly experiencing the same problem, which is that videos suddenly won't run in YouTube on Safari.   The video frame is just blacked out.
Copy and past the URL into Firefox and it runs without any problems.  I understand this is a recurring thing with YouTube on Safari, but is there a quick solution or do we just have to wait for YouTube (or Apple) to sort it out?
    Thanks...BC

One of the following steps should help.
    1. Install Adobe Flash Player.

        Restart
    2.  Enable Plug-ins
        Safari > Preferences > Security
        Web Content:
Click in the box for "Enable Plug-ins".
    3. Check  whether you are currently  in  YouTube HTML 5 trial.
         http://www.youtube.com/html5
At the bottom  left of the page  uncheck the box for
"You are currently in the HTML5 trial".
    4. Reset Safari.
Click Safari in the menu bar.
From the drop down select "Reset Safari".
Uncheck the boxes next to all items.
Check the box next to "Remove all website data".
        Click "Reset".
    5. Turn off Extensions/Plug-ins if any that may interfere with Flash working properly.
        Safari > Preferences > Extensions
    Best.

Just got it up and running after getting TV working after lightning strike...   Did the new update and Apple TV blinks/blacks out for just a second (during video or on dashboard) every 5 - 7 min...   Internet speed is strong and connection seems fine.

    1. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
    2. Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • Half of any video blacks out.

This has never happened to me until now, and I don't know why (which is why I'm on the forums). Pictured below is how it looks in After Effects.
Both the selection thumbnail and the video is half blacked out. However, the picture below shows the thumbnail for the video outside AE and
    it's perfectly fine.

There was a thread on this problem just two days ago. A search for black video would have given you the thread. It is the first one.
This is a problem acknowledged by Microsoft. It's their fault. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2803821 You'll have to either use a different codec or wait for Microsoft to solve the problem with an update.

  • Legal requirement to black out eyes of images of people on web site

A new web site which encourages people to report bad situations and other crappy aspects of modern life has a legal requirement that any photos of people posting or alleged bad guys have their eyes blacked out.
I understand that TV stations use AVID for blurring, and that Photoshop could easily be  used for a quick mask in a less dynamic environment, but is there a proven technique that be implemented in a web site? They have a fifteen minute posting lag time for editing out unacceptable material, ideally, but they may have to use a twice a day posting.

  • Captivate Video Blacks out while Audio continues

We are having problems with the video cutting out while the
audio continues. We have ran the captivate file from our web server
as well as downloading the files to our desktop and we experience
    the same problem.
We updated to the latest Java v1.42, cleared the cache,
history, updated flash player V8, cookies and changed the proxy
    settings.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

I actually figured out a fix myself.  When I compared the 3 clips in detail, I noticed that the 2 that were having problems were not converted.  All I had to do was to open the Clip inspector and click on the "Convert Entire Clip" button under the Speed section. Now my movie is playing fine.

  • Images and text blacked out upon joining pdfs and saving

    Hola all,
Let me preface this by saying I'm a complete noob to Acrobat, so sorry if this will be a stupid question.
Currently I'm attempting to join two pdfs together for a product on a few of my websites, upon doing so certain sections of the PDF are blacked out and the images are scrambled... I didn't have this issue with the Acrobat Pro 8 that was on my old system, but the most recent release (11.0.07) is causing issues.  Am I missing a setting somewhere?  It was pretty random doing this prior to today, now it seems to do it every time.  The blacked out areas are fine prior to saving, but as soon as I save, close, reopen it does this.
Original on the right, final product on the left...
    Thanks in advance

    Tools -> insert from file
But it doesn't matter, actually I can just save the larger of the 2 files and it creates the same issue, worked with support yesterday and they had me print to PDF the PDF causing an issue and it was fine after that.
No answer on why exactly.  Just an extra step I guess I'll have to take...

  • Snow Leopard makes FCP 6.0.6 wipes black out main video

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard I have found FCP 6.0.6 will not show the viewer window output properly on my 2nd screen via the View > VideoPlayback option, it just shows the first frame, if I scrub the viewer window it updates but not when I play it. But the canvas window does play back correctly in the 2nd screen.
Also getting very odd side effects if I use wipes like the QuickTime > Gradient Wipe on a 2nd video over the main video blacking out the canvas window while the wipe animates and then once complete the underlying video returns. Even when I render it out to a seperate QuickTime file it does this.
    Anyone else experienced this?

It was just an upgrade from the standard DVD of Snow Leopard.
What I have also noticed is that both the new designed QuickTime interface and the old QuickTime 7 app are co-existing. I'm wondering whether that is part of the problem?

  • When choose video, but black out, try restart ipad2 but to no avail, help

When choosing video app to watch podcast video, black out, restart tried, but still no response, help.

Try searching for the name of one of your videos on the iPad's spotlight search screen - swipe your first homescreen to the right, type in it's name, and if it finds it tap on it to see if it plays.
If that doesn't work then try closing the Videos app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Videos app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Videos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option if the two above don't work is another reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • How to make iMovie 09 recognize a mounted disk image?

I'm trying to store video clips in a disk image (Mac OS Extended - Journaled, single Apple Partition Map). Previously in iMovie 08 all I had to do was mount the image, start iMovie and it would recognize it as an additional drive. Then I could drag events to it and store them there. In 09 this does not work. It sees the image but has the yellow triangle/exclamation point in it. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it recognize the image! I've tried all variations in disk utility to create the image to no avail. Is iMovie 09 looking for a certain file on the disk image to recognize it? Maybe something in the DS_Store file or the .localized? Very frustrating.
    Hoping someone can help. Thanks.

    Try the following:
Mount the disk image so that there is a disk icon on the Desktop, and then launch Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities).  Copy-paste the following line into the Terminal window, and then type a single space. Do not type <Return> yet:
    sudo mdutil -i on
After typing the single space, drag the mounted disk image icon from the Desktop into the Terminal window, click inside the Terminal window, and then type <Return>.  Enter your admin password at the prompt (it will not echo on the screen),  and again type <Return>.
Hopefully that will enable Spotlght indexing on the mounted image. It might take some time to complete depending on the contents.
The result for this for me, three times, was "Indexing disabled."

  • Using disk images for learning games?

Hello, I've 2 g3 imacs running 9.2.2, and they are for the grandkids to use learning games on.
The kids are very hard on the software disks. When I found out about disk images I made them up, now to install them properly. The games are installed, but where to store the disk images? The desk top icons for the games will work after the disk images have been double clicked and the mounted disk image appears on the desktop, but when the imacs are turned off the mounted disk image is lost. How or where does one put the disk images in a safe place so the kids don't get at them, and the disks are mounted every time, without actually starting, when the Mac is started? Start up menu?
I'm planning on multiple accounts with them having a standard account with game privileges so they don't mess the whole thing up. If their accounts get too messed up for me to repair I figured on maybe deleting the account and opening up a new one? Any Ideas are very welcome.
    Thank you,
    EZ

    Hi, EZ -
    You're quite welcome.
I had a thought with regard to the disk image files. Are they in a .smi format, or are they in a .img format?
The .img format requires the assistance of the Disk Copy utility in order to mount the image. This is the standard format generated by the user version of Disk Copy. It requires that Disk Copy be available to Finder to act as a helper app in order to mount the image.
The .smi format does not - .smi stands for Self-Mounting Image. The user version of Disk Copy can not make this format; but I have seen a utility to convert .img format to .smi format. The slight advantage with this format is that Disk Copy does not need to be available to Finder.
In both cases the default is to run a checksum verification before the image is finally mounted. The delay caused by this verification can be inconvenient - verification is intended to confirm the integrity of the image after it has been copied, transported, or downloaded, but is usually not necessary when the image resides on a hard drive.
The checksum verification for .img file types can be removed. With the image not mounted, open Disk Copy. In Disk Copy's Preferences (Edit menu), uncheck the Verify Checksum item. Save the Preferences window. Then select Convert Image from the Image menu, navigate to the disk imge file from which you want to remove the verifiaction, select it and click the Open button. A new window will appear, similar to a Save As type window. Leave everything in that window untouched (unless you want to change the base name of the file - the extension .img should be left intact) and click the Save button. The image will be mounted, the original disk image file will be deleted, and a new disk image file created. Unfortunately creating the new image file takes quite a while since it is creating a new one, not actually modifying the old one - but it does get rid of the intrusion of the checksum verification requirement.
I verified on my G4/500 running OS 9.1 that a .img file (one I had made from a game CD years ago) dropped into the Startup Items folder will be mounted automatically at the end of the startup sequence. I also tested with an alias to the .img file, and it, too, worked fine - the disk image was mounted automatically at the conclusion of the startup sequence.
When you make the alias to the disk image file (the .img one), be sure you are placing it into the Startup Items folder, and not the Startup Items (disabled) folder.
If you have the machine set to use Simple Finder (which removes Finder's keyboard commands and many menu options for Finder), that may interfere with items in the Startup Items folder being run at startup. Or, it may not - I have not checked that.
    *** Edit ***
I have verified that the alias to a .img file will mount the disk image even when the machine is booted using Simple Finder.
Another thought, related to Multiple Users - if you do decide to set up Multiple Users, and the disk images are of type .img, be sure to authorize Disk Copy for each of the accounts for which the disk images are to be mounted. If you have the disk image files in a .smi format, since Finder views that file type as being an application, you would need to authorize each of those disk image files for each account which is to have access to them.

  • Missing video on Disk Image

    Hi,
I have had problems burning a movie from iDVD. The Promo, the Menues and half the movie were there but half way through the full length movie the video went to black. The audio is still there though. It plays fine in iMovie and iDVD. I tried creating a disk image and it has the same problem as the DVD. I moved lots of stuff onto an external hard drive so that there is 71GB of free space. Can anyone help please? I have spent two whole days trying to sort this out and I need to burn this promo.
    Thanks
    Annabel

    Hi,
thanks for all your feedback. I have deleted the preference files, I have yet to test if that made a difference. But yes the movie is on my external hardrive. I moved the main movie (where the problem is) to the hard drive before I made the iDVD and I moved the promo (which is fine) after I made it, and then put it back in so that file conection was still there. I needed to move them to create space on the computer as they were by far the biggest files as they have heaps of editing in them. It is the first time I've really used iMovie so I don't know if there is some way of making them smaller. Yes the footage came from a mini-DV camcorder, from a few different ones actually. Some directly from the camera and some from DV tape. I have no idea what the camera was set to and I have no way of checking as the camera wasn't mine.
    Thanks
    Annabel

  • Unable to burn AUDIO to DVD or Disk image, video is fine

As many other posts have stated; I am unable to burn the Audio portion of an iDVD nor does "save as disk image" transfer the audio of my iDVD. Transferred an iMovie, (an iPhoto set of photos with iTunes audio imported into iMovie) to iDVD. Audio plays on iMovie, audio plays on iDVD preview. Tried removing recommended ~com.apple.iXXX.plist, no help. Tried different encoding methods: i.e. Best/High/Professional. Tried saving to different sizes HD/Large/etc. Tried Share Media in iTunes, Media Browser, etc. Checked Main Audio, volume slider bar in iDVD. Tried importing audio into iDVD rather than transferring from iMovie. It doesn't seem to matter how I build the iDVD it works, until I go to Save As Disk Image or Burn DVD. Video works great (better in Large than HD) Audio doesn't transfer.
21 total minutes, 1.15GB of final iDVD using a default theme.

    Hi
(an iPhoto set of photos with iTunes audio imported into iMovie) to iDVD
Yes this is the problem - in iTunes there is a copy-protection that moves over
    Result
    • Plays well in iMovie
    • Plays well in iDVD preview
    • Silent on DVD
Only way around this is to in iTunes collect needed audio into a play-list
Burn this out as an Audio-CD and .aiff (NOT .mp3)
Use the audio on this CD in Your iMovie project.

  • Black Out Certain Portion Of The Video

I am super new to the Final Cut Pro X. I have a very simple question. I want to black out or remove a certain portion of the video without cropping that part. Below is an example image from the video:
You can see a blue text on the left top corner. I want it gone without cropping it. It should be black like the area behind it. Can somebody guide me how i can acheive that. Thanks!

Add  a black custom generator above the clip.
Adjust the shape and size and then move it over the date.
