Video but no audio for *some* .avi files

I had to reinstall QT v.10 from Install disk and since, I have had a problem w/ most of my .avi files playing no audio--tho they are fine in VLC. I checked the streams w/ VLC and here's what I found:
This plays fine:
Video:
Codec: MPEG-4 Video (XVID)
Resolution: 704x288
Frame rate: 25 fps
Audio:
Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Channels: 6
Bit Rate: 192 kb/s
This plays w/ no audio:
Video:
Codec: MPEG-4 Video (XVID)
Resolution: 624x352
Frame rate: 23.976024 fps
Audio:
Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga)
Sample Rate: 44100 Hz
Channels: 2 Channels Stereo
Bit Rate: 128 kb/s
I have other examples, but VLC showed no "Codec Details" for those. Does this make sense to anyone? I'm, duh, new. Please help!

Download and install Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

    Why doesn't QuickTime play audio for some avi videos? Is there a download to help resovle this.
    I am running Mountain Lion, I have also installed flipformac, divx, and vlc. They are working fine.
    Appreciate your answers.

    You can only use QuickTime Player 7 to play that 12 year old format.

  • Hi, my mac has stopped playing some avi files (that used to work). I can see the video. Does anyone know why and what i can do? My version of quicktime is 7.6.9.

    Hi i have avi files saved in iphoto that i used to be able to play through quicktime. However in the last few weeks i cannot play many of these files. I can see the videos and click on them but nothing happens (i have version 7.6.9 of quicktime). Does anyone know why this has happened and what i can do about this?
    Thanks.

    What do you mean by what audio/video formats are involved? These are all files from several digital cameras.
    As previously stated, AVI is a file container. It is somewhat old and its originator, Microsoft, dropped official support of it over a decade ago. However, it remains popular with PC users since almost any valid audio and/or video compression format can be stuffed to the file which synchronizes the content by interleaving the individual audio and video frames. The compression format is the specific manner in which the audio and video data are encoded as it is placed in the AVI container. You can find the compression format by inspecting the file in the Finder "Info" window, or in the "Inspector" window of the QT player (or other media player) if the file can be opened.
    For instance, one popular compression combination would be to place DivX encoded video and MP3 audio in an AVI file container. However, neither DivX nor MP3 is natively supported by the QT player. (Although iTunes will natively support the MP3 audio.) Therefore, people who wish to play such files in the QT 7 Player would normally install either the DivX component or Perian but not both. Either installation will independently play such files in the QT Player, but if both are installed, the file will usually stop working since these two codecs can create a playback conflict.
    However, the AVI container could just as easily contain DV along with DV audio. In this case, the file should play correctly in QT since this compression format is natively supported by the basic component configuration that comes in every current OS installation. Therefore, if such files suddenly stopped playing, this could be an indication that a component has been moved or deleted or that your system or QT embedded structure has become corrupted.

  • (Some AVI files not working with PlayVideo.java)Java Doctors - NEEDED

    Hi ,
    I m working on JMF, I m not getting video output while I run some
    .AVI files 1999 version and some movie clips which are .dat files
    Is there any solution for this.?
    I think JMF should give proper solution for all videos and audios.
    Thanks for all who are working in this wonderfull API
    Thanks for SUN also for their work in Java and JMF ....

    Thank you very much.
    But AVI and .mov will take much size than .dat files.
    so its better to concentrate in .dat files also for JMF I think.
    Is it true.
    I have a file of avi takes - 100mb for 3 min play of video
    if u convert to .mov takes - 60-70mb for the same time of video.
    I think you you have .dat files , for a movie of 2hours it takes only 1gb of size and can be shipped in two 500mb cds.
    Please if you have any solution to reduce the avi file sizes please let me know.
    Thank you,
    Kiran

  • Photoshop Video has no audio when playing WMV files, please help.

    Hello.  My Photoshop video editor works great with MOV files after installing Apple Quicktime the other day.
    Today I tried to load a WMV file into Photoshop's video editor.  I get the video, but no audio.  (The subject file plays perfectly in Windows Media Player.)  The master audio mute at the left end of the timeline window says the audio is not muted (and I test toggled while running the video).  And the video properties dialog that is accessible on the video clip icon itself shows the audio is not muted, and that the volume is set at 100%.   I see no other place where the audio could be killed.
    QUESTIONS:
    1) Is this another file type compatability issue, and if so, how can this be fixed?
    2) Would Apple Quicktime PRO be appropriate to convert the WMV file into a MOV file, so that I could then work with all of my WMV files?
    Thank you for your assistance, Chuck

    Load the movie into QuickTime Player, open the Movie Inspector (Window menu), and look at the Format section. That will show the codecs used for the video and audio, the audio being the second one listed. Post that information here and someone can probably tell you what you'll need.
    Regards.

    First, back up all data and then uninstall "DivX" according to the developer's instructions.
    Then try this:
    VideoLAN - Download official VLC media player for Mac OS X

    Basically your player is telling you that you need to install the codecs that will play the compressed data within the AVI file.
    AVI is a legacy file container in which the tracks of data are interleaved to maintain synchronization. This data can be encoded using many different audio and video codecs. Your problem is to determine which codecs you need for the player you are trying to use and install them if they are available. Failing that, your will either have to play the files in a different player which has the codec support your require built into the app or convert the content to a compression format that is natively compatible with the player you wish to use.
    Since you have not stated what platform, operating system, and particular player you are targeting for playback, it is difficult to provide precise instructions for fixing your specific problem at this point. Suggest you try alternative players compatible with your system and platform to see if they will play the files, use a dedicated media information utility to determine the codecs needed for playback, or post a sample file for analysis.

  • How can I cut some video but keep audio running?

    Hello
    I once knew how to do this but forgot, and can't find it in any discussions or help files.
    I have some shaky, crummy video but the audio in it is good.
    I am editing the video, but I want to keep a running audio track from the original DV import.
    "Paste over at playhead" is not the answer (unless I got it wrong).
    I doubt this is the best way to do it but I am presently copying a clip; extracting the audio; placing that audio back into the timeline under the video; hacking up the video...and hoping the length is close to perfect. (Surely not the way to do it).
    Tips? Thanks

    David
    You know, somehow your explanation made more sense than the iMovie Help file explanation. (Though it has some additional info that touches on what remains a bit of a problem for me).
    In any case, thanks. I am using this technique right now. The difficulty that remains for me is how to deal with a short segment of video (to paste) over a 2 or 3 times longer segment of audio. The help info and my own experimentation show that the remaining space gets filled with black. Not very pretty or smooth.
    Which leads me to my response to the other person who replied to my post...
    *Glo H*
    Yes. I am copying the clip so I can have needed video to fill the space as the audio plays. But I'm pretty sure this is not the smart, most efficient way.
    (See David's reply).
    I am continuing experimentation but am very much open to any other suggestions.
    Thanks again.

  • Some avi-files not playing on QuickTime Pro 7.0.4

    I tried to play a few avi-file movies using QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 on my Mac OS X 10.4.4, but unfortunately, I keep getting the message: "Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site." After going on that site, I downloaded some of the available free software, but the problem remains. Playing the movies with a third-application like the VLC, works fine. I wish QuickTime Pro would have the same capabilities in playing avi files like other Players. Do you have an idea how I can solve the problem?
    Thanks for your support!

    Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I will remain with the VLC for playing AVI files that donnot play on the QT Player as the VLC plays almost any movie file. I came across an interesting article regarding the subject:
    QuickTime: About Playing .AVI Files
    Learn why an .AVI file may not play as expected in QuickTime Player.
    AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. The .AVI format is what is known as a container format. It specifies a way in which a file may contain audio and video data. It does not specify how that data is encoded. The encoding of audio and video data is specified in what are known as codecs. A codec (short for COmpressor/DECompressor) tells the computer how to decode the audio and video tracks that have been encoded within the .AVI file. QuickTime Player can use numerous codecs by default. You can also add additional codecs to extend QuickTime's features using plug-ins or third-party installations.
    When QuickTime opens an .AVI file, it checks to see which codecs were used to encode the audio and video tracks within it. For example, an .AVI file may contain a video track encoded in the Cinepak codec and an audio track encoded with the ALaw 2:1 codec. If both the audio and the video were compressed using a codec that QuickTime can use, the file will play normally. If the audio or video or both were created using codecs that QuickTime cannot use, you may see a message like the following:
    "QuickTime is missing the software needed to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server"
    or
    "You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename.avi" because the required compressor could not be found."
    These messages are not an indication that anything is wrong with QuickTime Player.
    Lists of audio and video codecs included with and supported by QuickTime are available from the QuickTime specifications page.
    Using QuickTime Player, you may be able to determine which codec was used to compress an audio or video track:
    QuickTime 6 and earlier
    Open the file in QuickTime Player.
    From the Movie menu, choose Get Movie Properties.
    From the left pop-up menu in the Properties window, choose Sound Track or Video Track.
    From the right pop-up menu, choose Format. The Format section shows the codec.
    QuickTime 7
    Open the file in QuickTime Player.
    From the Window menu, choose Show Movie Info. The codec is listed next to Format.
    If the .AVI file is encoded using a codec that is not included with QuickTime, you might be able to find and add that codec so QuickTime can play media encoded with it. Contact the party that publishes or distributes the codec to see if a QuickTime version is available. Many third-party QuickTime components are available on the QuickTime components page.

  • In v.11, how can I capture video but not audio from a camera?

    In v.11, how can I capture video but not audio from a camera?

    Rodney
    I see what you mean....Premiere Elements 10 appears to be the last version that had options for the user to select Capture Video and/or Audio in the its Capture Window.
    If you are doing DV data capture firewire into the Premiere Elements 11 Capture Windows and want a final file without audio and you cannot do this at the camera level, then consider....
    1. Do the Capture "to the Timeline" - video linked to audio result on the project's Video Track 1
    a. Right click the Timeline DV AVl and select Delete Audio and then edit accordingly.
    or
    b. Import the DV AVI but, when you go to export it, in the export settings, remove the check mark next to Audio so that the export contains only the video portion.
    Publish+Share/Computer/AVI with Presets = DV NTSC Standard
    Please let us know if any of that worked for you.
    Thank you.

  • FLVPlayback - Video but no Audio

    I'm building a flash projector who's main purpose is to play video.
    Everything was working great, but occaisionally the video player showed video but no audio. It did this inconsistently - sometimes it would work, sometimes it didn't, and the volume always reported back as "1"
    Here is some of the excerpted as3 I've written:
    flv_player.height = 720;
    flv_player.width = 1280;
    flv_player.x = 0;
    flv_player.y = 0;
    flv_player.fullScreenTakeOver = false;
    flv_player.source = my_source; // (variable string containing path to f4v file)
    addChild(flv_player);
    // ======= //
    flv_player.play();
    flv_player.seek(desired_s); // number
    for now, I've fixed the problem by throwing in a half second wait using setInterval, after adding the child and starting the player (where // ===== // appears above
    What bothers me about this fix is:
    A) there's a half second of sitting on black and
    B) I don't know why it's not working or why a wait fixes it.
    I tried waiting to play until the fl.video.VideoEvent.READY event fired from the the FLVPlayback object, but no dice.
    Any ideas out there?

    I did come up with a solution, and it seems to work, though it's not as elegant as I'd like. I now add the FLVPlayback component (set to auto start playing), and set an interval to check if it's started playing every 33 ms (or roughly every frame). Once it/s 200ms in, I presume the video and audio are muxed and I can seek. Here's some excerpted code from my MovieClip class:
    //adding flvplayback
                                  flv_player.height = 720;
                                  flv_player.width = 1280;
                                  flv_player.x = 0;
                                  flv_player.y = 0;
                                  flv_player.fullScreenTakeOver = false;
                                  flv_player.source = my_source;
                                  flv_player.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, on_complete);
                                  addChild(flv_player);
                                  // right now, it's going to check to see if the video is playing.
                                  my_interval = setInterval(start_playing,33);
    private function start_playing():void
                                  // if the video is 200ms in, we'll presume the audio is muxed and will start the show!
                                  if (flv_player.playheadTime > 0.2) {
                                            clearInterval(my_interval);
                                            my_interval = new uint();
                                            flv_player.seek(my_in_point);

    I get great video but the audio is very choppy and the spoken words are indistinguishable.

    Ive also tried Skype but cant get the video to work, I did get it to work once but again the audio was indistinguishable or not even there when the video was.
    If people can help me on the iChat first as that is what i will be using to talk to my parents.

    HI Adrian,
    The original specs did say
    iSight, Any Firewire DV Ouput Camcorder and Firewire web Cams
    Eccam gave the option of External USB cams
    Most of these are Web cams but the utility works for some camcorders that don't export in DV as well as those that use USB.

  • Video, but no audio? - one solution

    I have a 20" Intel iMac, and am running all the latest software updates, including QuickTime. I have been very frustrated trying to watch the keynote today and have been getting video but no audio. After trying many different things, including downloading and installing QuickTime again, I was getting nowhere. I called my son-in-law, who is an ex-PC guy and is now HUGE into all things Apple, suggested that I start up GarageBand, open a file, then quit the application and try the keynote again.
    It worked ! So I thought I would share this solution on the forum and maybe help others.

    Hy,
    I had the same problem has you had.
    Then I followed your clue, installed garage band, opened a new project and quicktime started singing again
    It seems to me like it's a windows's like behavior!!!
    Now I have garage band installed, and I really didn't want it to fill up my hard drive
    But thanks for the head's up!
    Cheers.
