Video Capture on New iMac
I have 4 aluminum iMacs in my school's TV studio and am ready to buy 2 more. I also have to get two Firewire-DV Video Capture boxes (like the Canopus AVDC300) to capture video in to Final Cut Express. With the new iMacs you only get Firewire 800 and all of these video convertors only have firewire 400. I hear that the firewire convertors and adaptor cables will not work for this purpose. Any ideas on a solution would be welcome.

According to Canopus none of their DV Capture/Converters will work with the new iMac with an adaptor. Their tech support person said that they are looking to include USB with their next gen products and will not likely issue a short term fix.

Hi. Not quite a computer nerd so bear with me please
I purchased a Kaiser Baas VHS to DVD video capture thingo the other day and really wanted to use it on my 20" iMac (at the time with Mac OS X Leopard) with my PS2. It's a Empia USB 2861 device? Am I right?
So I installed the driver it came with connected it to my iMac, connected the PS2, opened up Empia capture (that it came with) and I got some nice video capture BUT NO SOUND! When I go into the sound settings of Empia capture, the device doesn't even come up in the source list. So went through a million forums on the net and discussions and couldn't find anything to help me.
So then.... I looked at my beautiful new 13" MacBook with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Plugged in the Kaiser Baas video capture device, installed it, connected my PS2, opened up Empia Capture and found some nice video capture AS WELL AS SOUND TO GO WITH IT! Perfect exactly what I wanted.... BUT on a 13" MacBook.
I really want this all on my 20" iMac. So then I thought... maybe it was to do with Leopard and Snow Leopard, so thought I might as well upgrade to Snow Leopard on the iMac tisn't thaaaaaat expensive.
But still doesn't work.....

I just purchased one of the new iMac 24" 2.4GHz. After purchasing, I upgraded from 1Gb to 4Gb of RAM. I purchased this machine solely to use for video editing. I'm a professional graphic designer, and I have owned several eMacs and iMacs over the past 5-6 years. I've always been impressed with the performance and price point of these "non-pro" machines.
Up until this latest purchase, I have been doing most of my work on a 20" white iMac 2Ghz Intel with 1Gb of RAM. I have been very impressed with this 20" machine. It runs all the pro apps very well, with great speed and performance, and super stability. I guess I could say that this 20" 2GHz machine is the best Mac I have ever owned.
Because I was so impressed with the 20" 2GHz model, is why I decided to invest in another. I really needed another machine to use as a standalone video editing machine, to run Apple Motion, Final Cut, and Cinema 4D.
So, far this newest 24" 2.4GHz 4Gb RAM model has not overly impressed me. It is a very nice looking machine, and it runs Illustrator, Photoshop and the other graphics programs great, with no lag. But, for video production using Apple Motion, it has not been as stable as my previous 20" (with only 1Gb RAM!). I thought with the addition of added processor speed, quadruple the the amount of RAM, and a so called "better graphics card" that this new machine would run Motion like a dream. I do want to note that my video projects are not HUGE. Most of them are under 3 minutes in length, and standard resolution.
As I read through discussion forums, I am slowly learning that the new graphics card may be a bit lacking in these new iMacs. For this reason I ask, is there any way to upgrade the video cards in these new machines?? If so, please advise, I have many video projects coming up in the future and I need a good solution. If it is not upgradable, what Mac machine would be the best, (cost effective) route to running motion graphics software?jalapi, Welcome to the discussion area!

No the video capability is part of the motherboard and therefore not changeable nor upgradeable. -
No video chat on new iMac but ok on iBook
I have a new iMac and just tried to have a video chat with a PC user, but kept receiving a "failure to respond" error (apparently I failed to respond). I tried a chat with the same PC user using my iBook and had no problem. (I can only video chat with a PC user if I initiate the chat).
- Both the iBook and iMac are running Tiger
- Both are using iChat 3.1.4
- My firewall is off on the iMac
- Both are connected to the internet through my Airport
- Both are on the same desk (so it can't be a location issue)
- I can't invite the iMac to join a 3-way conference using the iBook (the video chat isn't an option). Although I've read that PC's can't be used in multiconference, so maybe that's the problem on this point.
- I can video chat between the iBook and iMac using different accounts, so I know my camera's working fine.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?Hi allnew2me,

Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab.
In the drop down set the speed to match your download or a max of 1.5 meg if you are faster.

Video capture solutions for iMac?
Back when I was a PC sufferer, I used to capture video of video games and other stuff via a video capture card. Now that I have better applications for editing footage on my iMac, I'd like to be able to capture footage again. The guy at the Apple Store told me that there are firewire devices that can capture video footage, unfortunately I forgot which company's products he recommended! Anyone here know of any such devices and which is the best brand to use? Thanks.
Do you want to capture videos of the games you're playing on your Mac? If I understood it correctly, then you might try Snapz Pro X, and even if it's not a UB app, it runs smoothly on my iMac.

Troubleshoot video out on new iMac
I'm trying to connect a mid-2011 iMac to my TV. I have a MDP/HDMI dongle and an HDMI cable. I hook everything up and the iMac doesn't detect the TV as a display. I checked the cables and rebooted the iMac. Anything else to check?
I've done video out with older iMacs (pre-MDP) and never had a problem. I have no way of knowing if it is a cable or a port problem.
The MDP (actually Thunderbolt) port seems loose. Is this just the nature of the port?Try connecting the cable and adapter only to the TV and turn on the TV. Then hot connect the adapter to the iMac. If the iMac still cannot read the EDID from the TV I would call Apple about warranty repair/replacement.

Video capture on new computer not working
Recently I got computer from ADK which has a 6 pin firewire connection on back. I
cannot get CS5 to recognise my Canon HV20.
In the past I used a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire and CS3 to capture HV20 from laptop
without problems.
On the computer company's quality assurance page there is a check mark next to
"capture/render test completed", however there was a small metal "buckle" that was supposed to
pulled back away from the firewire port where the cable goes which blocked any firewire cable from
entering. I had to bend it out of the way myself. Could they have done the capture test without
a firewire port? I have to wait until Monday to contact them.Thanks, under IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers it says "Texas Instruments 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller".
I'll have to change that to legacy somehow. I'm not sure how to do that at the moment.
With my video capture it has been saying offline like it doesn't recognise it at all.
I may have to end up going with HDV split but at present am concerned as to whether or not the port
is bad. -
Quartz Extreme or video card freezed new iMac every few minutes
Hi, I recently bought a refurbished iMac because I wanted the ATI video card instead of the new nvidia ones. So it was great, I set it up in less then 5 minutes with zero prior knowledge of macs, and began to do stuff like the commercials, moving videos, playing music, etc. After about 10 minutes or so, the screen just froze. Weird thing is, the mouse still moves, but that's it. The whole screen is frozen, but the mouse still works. You can still SSH in, etc, but everything else is just frozen still. I waited a few hours, same thing. So I restarted it thinking it was a one-time thing. About another 10 minutes passed of doing stuff, and it froze again. So I thought maybe software updates would fix it. After 2 hours of waiting for the combo updates and other updates to download and install (this I would like to point out, when the computer is idle, it doesn't freeze, it freezes only when I'm "doing stuff"). Same problem, EFI updates, same problem. So I began to troubleshoot. First, I ran memtest and the apple hardware test (extended), no problem. Next, Disk Util, Verify + Repair, no problems found, but freezing still occurs. I googled and found it was either a RAM or VRAM problem, I know it isn't RAM because memtest didn't return any errors, so I figured it has something to do with video. I tried lower resolutions still doesn't work. Finally, I went hard-core and disabled Quartz Extreme (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040724190553112) and it doesn't freeze anymore. So my question is:
1) Is this a software problem (can it be fixed via software), or more likely a hardware problem (defected video card?)
2) If it's a hardware problem, can Apple fix it for free or do I have to return it?
P.S: It's kinda ironic that I switched to a Mac to escape all the computer issues I face daily with a PC and all I get is more but I gotta admit, it was easy to set up and the interface is lovely.Ok, there's two crash logs, but I think they're unrelated:

Not sure where else to put this. I've tried several times over the course of the last 2 days to play the video on the iMac page but all I get is a blank window. No video, audio or controls. Just a blank window. Is this a known problem ?

Within Apple’s slim new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, based on our new Kepler-class architecture, which helps make them up to 60 percent faster than last year’s models. This follows news in June that Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses Kepler GeForce GPUs.
The new 27-inch iMac offers the GeForce GTX 660M as its base GPU, with even faster GeForce GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680MX GPUs available. The 21.5-inch model comes with the GeForce GT 640M GPU, with an available upgrade to the GeForce GT 650M GPU.

How to do simple video capture on my iMac?
This seemed like the best place to ask about this.
Basically, I want to use my iMac to record videos from my Xbox 360. I just want to make short clips every now and then that I can post on youtube. I was looking at some devices such Elgato's EyeTV at the Apple store. However, it can do so many things I do not need, but all those extras make it $150.
I saw the mini DVI to S Video adapter but those only allow you to use your TV as a monitory right? Those are only $19 bucks because they do a very specific job. Is there a device or cable that will allow whatever is on my TV to be projected on my iMac so I can record it? I dont need all the extras that the EyeTV does.If you don't have a digital video camera you can record with before transferring into the iMac, you will need to buy something like EyeTV Hybrid. Your iMac doesn't have a video input, only output. EyeTV Hybrid in an inexpensive route to owning one.

VIDEO IN on new Quad Core iMac?
Hello FOlks.
I have a Digital Night Vision Monocular I need to connect video in on my Quad Core iMac.
Can anyone tell me WHICH CABLE is the cheapest and best for this?
I need a standard video like from a camcorder plug, I've seen converters with multiple video input sources even.
I already read discussions about it, I just need to know WHICH MODELS work with the new video input feature of the newest iMac's like mine.

You will not be able to use RCA input (or any other composite input such as S-Video) on the new 27-inch iMac's Mini DisplayPort. The only input that works there is DisplayPort, which can be from regular DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output. There are some costly adapters that convert DVI to DisplayPort, but I do not know of any other type. One issue is going probably going from an analog signal to digital.
You may instead find success using a USB video input interface device. The most popular are by Miglia and Elgato. Such devices usually come with software that allows you to display and capture video input from various sources. -
Comparing focus of new iMac's internal iSight video
I have a new iMac. When I view iSight's live feed in, say, Photo Booth or iMovie, it seems like the focus is not very sharp.
I've tried the suggestions in Apple's tech note on iSight.
Here are a few shots (posted to Picasa) I took. This is with artificial light, as it is late at night:

Daytime/natural light results are, to me, similarly blurry.
Maybe I'm expecting too much? Could I ask new iMac users to check out the photos above and compare with your iSight video quality.
Could you also post examples of your built-in iSight image quality? (To capture an image, I used utilities/Grab and did Capture>Selection, then saved to disk and uploaded to Picasa.

I can see that image quality for your viewers is important to you.
For uploads of images whose quality is particularly important to you, you may want consider using PNG format, TIFF format, or some other low/no compression image file format rather than the JPEG image format that you chose for your upload in this topic.
You noted the "dithered/pixelated quality" of the gif format sample image I had uploaded in another thread. While highly compressed GIF images certainly suffer more quality loss than moderately compressed JPGs, PNG or TIFF can reduce compression loss even further.
JPEG can offer control over how much compression you apply when saving your image. However, other file formats like PNG or TIFF can further reduce quality loss by not applying as much compression for those image where you consider quality to be critical in your viewed images.

New imac to tv help: mDVI to DVI cable, DVI to component video adapter?
I am getting my new imac tomorrow, very excited. I would love to be able to hook it up to my HD tv which has component video inputs.
It has two by the way, one says component video, one says component video HD. (that's the one my xbox is hooked up to.)
I think I'm getting like 1020p or something like that?
am aware of the lack of sound, but will have the imac hooked up to speakers so no worries on that.
will this chain work? mDVI-DVI cable, DVI to component video adapter? then what? component video cable to tv?
so I will need to buy two adapters and one cable right? Also, the cable is gonna need to be about 30ft long so will I be able to daisy chain cables?
PS, what kind of resolution will I be getting with the standard (none component HD) inputs?

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac? I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder. Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable. I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer. My camcarder is still not recognized.
I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.
