Video Card Help

Here is the system i am running now. I wanted to pump one last breath into this thing before i upgraded so i went and purchased.
1. Leopard
2. Two sticks of 1gb Patriot ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220058
3. And... EVGA GeForce 7600GS graphics card (AGP)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130076
I basically want to run World of Warcraft as best as possible (to up my framerates from 5 fps). Installed Leopard last night, works fine. I plugged in the Video Card and am beginning to think i made a purchasing error. I am really novice when it comes to hardware. I asked a few friends of mine and they recommended this card, but i am wondering if they were not totally informed on what is Apple compatible.
I used to run an old 17" ACD but this card doesnt have the ACD slot, so i tried using a temporary sony 12" LCD monitor. I got no response. I followed the instructions in the little G5 handbook for installation.
Will this video card work on my tower? If not can someone please recommend a good solution for the same price range ($90-$125 ish). Nearest Apple store is 3 hours away and the local apple provider is extremely unhelpful.
Thanks in advance

That card won't be compatible with your computer. Unfortunately, video cards need to be Mac-specific cards in order to run. The ROM on the card needs to be designed to work with the Mac's Open Firmware, whereas a the ROM on the standard PC card is designed to work with the PC's BIOS.
There aren't many options out there any more for Mac AGP cards. The only one that's still readily available is ATi's 9600, but it's not significantly faster than your existing card (although pretty much anything is faster than your existing card). For some info on considering a flashed PC card (a PC card that's had its ROM contents replaced with Mac compatible code) see japamac's posts on the following thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7026831&#7026831

  • Building a new computer.. video card help?

im building a new system, planning to use after effects CS5 on it, and these are the specs.
    Intel Core i7 930 2.8 GHz w/ 8mb cache
    Asus P6T SE Motherboard
2 x 500GB Caviar Black 7200 RPM SATA HD (linked somehow.. raid, maybe? he said it's show up as one drive and be faster)
2 TB 5400 RPM Additional storage drive.
    Patriot Extreme Performance Viper II Series DDR3 12GB (6 x 2GB)
    GeForce GTS 250 512MB PCI-E w/ DVI, HDMI
    and a 24" Samsung Display.
This has run me 2200, already a little over over my budget?
My question is, is it worth the upgrade to a 285 (or maybe a Quadro)? This'll cost probably 300-400 more dollars. How different will it really be with this Mercury Playback Engine?

If you build the PC and it has RAID you can use a RAID 0 (striping).  It
reads and writes faster but if one drive fails all is lost as each drive only contains half of
the data.  I run an ICor7 920 2.66 that boots from a Western Digital 10K hard drive and runs two 500 GB drives in a RAID 0 for data drive.  I didn't get the boost I expected from the RAID 0.  I run two monitors with a 512 MB NVidia 8400 video card running my editing screen and a 1 GB NVidia 9500 running my display monitor.  It works pretty well.  The CS5 x64 really made it better but if I have too many layered sequences I have to reduce the monitoring to 1/4 res.  I run Windows7 x64.

  • Do pci slot coolers for video cards help alot?

simple, read the title, I want a better oc without ruining the warranty

I am using the Vantec PCI 2 fans thinggy that blows air to the video card from below and from changing slow to max fan speed my 9800XT shows a 3 or 4º C improvement.
I also installed a fan on top pulling air out and it also lowered the radeon's temperature at least 2º C more.
Was I able to overclock more? Probably, but just a little probably... what it really did was mantain the pc case cooler, as these new video cards are hotter than hell. My case temperature when overclocked was reduced almost 5º C because of this.

  • Think i have a problem with my Video card help ???

    Hi Guys
Ok reason why i think this i currently have a black screen
I can still use the mac via screen share from my G5 so i know all is ok & i am currently making sure i'm backing up
I have tried to connect it to an external monitor but the mac doesn't register that there is one there
One other strange problem i can type ok but i cannot use my trackpad while i am in screen sharing mode
    Any help would be great
    Thank You

Well it's either your graphics card or the inverter for the screen I'd guess - either way the only people who can fix this for you are Apple.
The fact that it doesn't see an external monitor would suggest it's the card ...
I know this might sound like a dumb question but you have turned the brightness up fully and tried a PRAM reset haven't you ?
Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.

  • Genius needs to help! problems with my video card and system

Hey guys! I'm going to post my specs first so that you get a good idea of what I'm running on:
    MSI Neo2 LS 865PE.....MAT=Slow
    Pentium4 2.4C.....FSB=233=2.8C hyperthreading enabled ~>1.55V
Corsair TwinX 1gig PC3700.....memory on "AUTO" in BIOS with timings at 3,4,4,8 ~> 2.7V
    Radeon 9700NP.....stock speeds ~>1.7V
AlienX case with 2 fan400 watt power supply and 6 case fans
    Zalman Alum/Copper heatsink fan
1:I've had this motherboard for a few months now. I upgraded my video card from a nVidia Ti4200(128meg) to a Radeon 9800 a month ago, but I couldn't get it working at 8X AGP, no matter what voltages I threw at it. I returned it for a Radeon 9700NP hoping that it would work, but it still won't.
I'm using BIOS 1.9 and since there is no option to select your AGP speed, I could only try using ATI's drivers. Once booted into Windows, there is a slider you can move to select you AGP speed. On my machine It says that It has performed some tests and has concluded that AGP 4x is the best for my system....but my system supports AGP 8X!
I've moved the slider over to 8x (which requires a reboot) at least 5 times with each card but the slider refuses to move past 4xAGP after the reboot.
2: My second problem: I had an old stick of KingMax PC3200 and decided to buy 3 more sticks. Unfortunatly, the 3 I bought did not match the one I had, so I only put 2 of the new sticks I bought into my system. Immediatly, My system would crash, lock up, files were corrupt, and I got PLENTY of blue screens of death with a long message containing: 0x0000007  with all these other numbers and "0"s. I did a search online and found out I had a hardware incompatibility problem. I never got this with my old stick of ram.
I returned the 3 sticks of Ram and replaced them with the Corsair. Put my new Radeon 9700 in, formatted my hard drive....and within 24 hours, my system locked up 3 times, rebooted itself 5 times, and gave me the same BSOD as mentioned above with the same long message.
I didn't change anything except for the memory and the video card. I've been wanting to overclock, (thats why i bought the faster memory   ) but I'm not sure what to do at this point.
I have my FSB at 233 but I'm scared to go any higher because of previous system instability at stock speeds. My RAM was running on 400 and MAT=Turbo with the most relaxed timings at 3,4,4,8.
I've given myself hours of sleepless nights formatting when my system wouldnt boot into windows; overclocking....etc. I NEED HELP. PLEASE. PLEASE. Anything could work at this point.
I'm trying to get more info on how to run my system at a 5:4 ratio, also.
If anyone has problems like me or knows what could be the problem with my system, please reply to this post, it would help me a lot. I've been trying to fix these problems for a few months now so anything is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot to you guys that responded. I brought my computer home this past holiday and I want to let you know where I stand as of now. I guess this thread is like my blog for my computer. I want to clear some things before my first post makes everyone confused.
1- I have only 2 sticks of memory in my system: the Corsair PC3700 TwinX 512x2
I returned the 3 KingMax I bought, and still keep my old stick just in case.
2- I am using the 400 watt power supply that came with the case. I read some reviews of the case and I know the reviewer did not have problems with the power supply. In my BIOS, there are some voltages it is weak on. Lets say: it it should be 5.00+, my power supply will be feeding it 4.96v or something like that, but I dont know, or think, that is a major problem...
3- My computer will refuse to boot if memory speeds are set at anything below 400. SO....if I want to use a 5:4 ratio and have to set my memory speeds to "333" in BIOS, my system refuses to boot.
4- This morning, I did manage to overclock my FSB to 250. Specs are as follow:
Memory Timing @3,4,4,8,4.....speed set at "AUTO".....MAT at "SLOW"
    MY 2.4C's FSB was raised to 250 = 3.0gig
AGP/PCI frequency: 67.xx/3x.xx (cant go any lower)
    CPU voltage: 1.5500
    Memory voltage: 2.75
    Video Card voltage: 1.7
Everything was fine for the whole day until I heard something click in my computer around midnight, and then seconds later, my computer froze and made a continuous beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. (you can imagine)
This "click" and system crash has been plaguing me for months now. I dont know whay it happens. I was just using AIM when I heard the click and my heart stopped.
My memory speeds have been set to "AUTO" even at the FSB of 250. But I don't know if this still means my system is at a 1:1 ratio. I know the BIOS then adjusts the memory to work at 500 if my FSB is 250...so I assume it is?    I love 3gig, but somehow I feel that 2.8 is faster, since the FSB=233 running parallel to my memory, also at 233
A FSB of 250 is good enough for me, that's what I've been waiting 6 months for. If anyone knows how to set other ratios to achieve a FSB of 250+, please let me know, but as I said, my memory won't boot if its set at "333"

  • Graphics/Video Card [REPLACEMENT / UPGRADE] on HP Pavilion Desktop - Help

    I have the following:
    HP Pavilion Elite m9152p Desktop
Upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (upgraded 11-2009)
The video card seems to have gone out and I have tried the following:
    Reinstalling Operating system
Uninstalled & Reinstalled & Rollback drivers
Prior to the above attempts, no changes had been made to software or hardware only leading to the same result: The video seems to be fine and then it freezes and crashes and ultimately has to have a hard-restart at which point, the computer loads the onboard video/graphics.
I need to purchase a replacement video/graphics card, but I am unsure what specs I need to be aware of or what my computer can handle as far as a replacement and maybe a possible upgrade (not necessary) - any help in this regard would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I think it is a good choice.
The reviews seem positive for the most part including that the fan appears to be quiet.
I don't know if your previous card had HDMI.
When you install your new video card, it may disable your onboard audio due to the HDMI audio chip on the video card.
If you do lose your onboard audio, after you install the video drivers, reboot the machine, go into the BIOS, find the onboard audio setting. It may be set to Auto or Disabled. Change the setting to Enabled. Save the setting where you made the change and again when you exit the BIOS.
Upon reboot you will have your onboard audio back.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

  • Help with running OS X 10.5 with a GMA X3100 video card

I am trying to boot Mac OS X 10.5 on my iPod. I kept booting, and every time it came up with a kernel panic. I ran it in Verbose mode, and it said that the video card was not supported. The updaters said that my iPod didn't meet the requirements, which I think that Leopard needs to be succsessfully booted to be able to update. I need help booting into Leopard so I can do some things.

I have been able to run Cheetah and Tiger on it. Also, the partition is Mac OS Extended (Jounaled) and the disk has the GUID Partition Table. The iPod is a 2nd gen "Touch Wheel" iPod, 20 GB. The HD on my MacBook is just about full, so what other way can I use Leopard without using an external drive?

  • Need help with video card for my dual 1.8 G5

Ok, I've spent the last hour and a half searching around and really haven't found what I was looking for, although, it's probably right under my nose and I'm a moron. Anyways, here goes...
I have a dual 1.8 G5 and I'd like to add an extra video card. From what I've read, the "stock" location for the video card is AGP, but all three of the other expansion slots are all PCI-X, is that correct? I also, thought I had read that a Radeon 9200 PCI or a Sonnet Sonata SD will work in the PCI-X slot, is that true for just those particular video cards or will any PCI card work? If that's not the case, does any body know what options I have? I've spent a lot of time lurking on these forums and you guys have helped tremendously in the past, so I thank you in advance for any help you guys can give.
    Aaron

    Hi,
That G5 Mac will accommodate 66/33MHz Mac Edition PCI cards.
•The Sonnet Sonata is a 16MB VRAM card and will work in either a 33 or 66MHz slot, so it's okay. Slow, but okay.
•The ATI RADEON 9200 PRO 128MB MAC EDITION PCI card is a better choice because it has 128MB VRAM and is much faster. Unfortunately it's difficult to find new ones at the moment. There are several used ones on Fleabay right now for under $89.
•There are other PCI cards that will work too, like the ATI Radeon 7000 Mac Edition 32MB PCI model as seen on Fleabay as item # 200046086081. That's probably your cheapest choice.
Just make SURE you get a Mac Edition, a PC type will not work.
Adding another PCI card will have zero effect on graphic performance of the AGP video card. Each AGP or PCI slot stands alone, and will only affect the monitor it's attached to. PCI slots are much slower than AGP slots (8X slower) in G5's.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • [SOLVED] Help diagnosing nVidia video card

I've got a nVidia GT 240 that is producing some glitches on video playback.
Frames that become stuck and have to wait until a full refresh and sometimes, complete freezes.
    Also, this happened yesterday:
    http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/9318/d3zs.jpg
I use it only for video playback over HDMI to a 47" TV via XBMC.
I would need help troubleshooting it... I tested my ram with memtest86+ and it's fine, so there's nothing else that comes to mind that could be the problem. I don't know how to test a video card, though.
What would you suggest me to do?

OK: I meant, the problem is not related to the video card, it has nothing to do with the video card, th video card is fine,... if you want to know about what I have been through, you can see it in this thread:

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
    Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future.

  • Need help on MS8808 video card

I have a Vanta / TNT2M64 video card (MS8808 Ver 1A) purchased from Techtronics here in western Canada. I accidentally shorted the card against my metal computer case while re-installing the card ..and now its dead. I put the old video card back in my computer, so I know the computer is still working fine, so I apparently caused an electrical problem on the MS8808 card. Can anyone suggest which component I may have fried, and if it can be replaced? Does anyone have a detailed component schematic for this card ..one that lists the details of each component? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Im running Hybrid SLI (Geforce Boost) on my Acer Aspire X1200 SFF with a Geforce 8200 (integrated) and a Geforce 8400 GS (add in) and notice no instability issues. (230 watt psu)

  • Please help in selecting video card

I have an older 500 MHZ (single cpu) G4. I just bought a 23" Apple display. I use the comp. for graphics applications (photoshop, illustrator, etc)
The video card I have in the G4 currently is an ATI Rage 128 Pro. I need to upgrade for the new monitor. I need an AGP card with at least 128 MB and a DVI connection for the new Apple display.
Also, right out of the box, the display does not work. I had it all hooked up and plugged in and the display never turns on. The LED light doesnt even light up. Is this a bad transformer or a video card problem.
I am sending the display back.
Please help me pick out the correct video card. All of the ones I have seen are either for the G5 or not for certain generation G4. I will be upgrading to G5 sometime next year but I have to work with this one for now.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Help!  Video card issues- Slow during games

Hey everyone, so heres my problem. I just got a brand new mbp 13" with 4 gigs ram with the new battery and everything. I have the game monkey island and spore on my mac. I also have windows xp installed on the other partition of my hard drive. I just need windows for one piece of software I use that I accidentally bought for my pc that died so now I'm stuck running it on my mac in windows. I also have modern warfare 2 on the windows side. Up until a couple days ago all the games were running really great, however yesterday something popped up on my windows saying something about malware (ughhh) and then call of duty on the windows side was running completely sluggish and when I restarted the computer in mac and tried to run spore or monkey island both of them are running slow too. What is weird is that it is only sluggish when running these games, never when watching movies or anything else that requires a video card. Could I have got a virus thats also affecting my mac os. Could this be a hardware issue? I'm just not sure. Would appreciate any help

If you got a virus on your Windows partition, that in itself wouldn't affect Mac OS X partition directly. If you have a Windows partition you should take all the usual Windows related measures to ensure your system is protected against Virus/ Trojans/ Malware etc by installing Anti Virus software.
Have you reset your PRAM (and/or Permissions)? Did this have any effect?
Since your MBP is so new, if a PRAM (& permissions) reset didn't help, I'd make an appointment to see a Genius at your local Apple Store and get them to check your MacBook Pro over.
