Video Card not sure if it's dying

Hello
I'm not sure if this problem is my video card or a power supply issue.
I get vertical rows all across the screen of glitches before I log in & 70% of the glitches go away once logged in. I can still use my system. If I open a folder up & move it around the screen, some small glitches will follow the folder. I have a photo of the screen but don't know how to attach it with this post. The video card is a AGP Radeon Mac Pro Special Edition which is about 5 years old.
This system is the very first G5 Dual 2 IBM chip set.
Any clues?
Thanks

Steve, It would appear that I have the same green/yellow vertical lines with my Dual 2Ghz Power PC G5. I'm using the same video card connected to two 17" apple displays. Have you had any luck and figuring out the cause?

  • GeForce4 TI Video Card Not Recognized Anymore?

For about almost a year, the fan on the GeForce4 TI video card would occasionally make a grinding noise, although it has always been easily fixed by lightly sticking a finger on the fan to stop it for a second and it would go back to normal.
However, about a month ago this little fix stopped working. The grinding noise was unbearable. After searching the Internet for a few minutes, I found out that I wasn't the only one suffering from this problem, and some even offered tips on how to replace the fan.
I followed the steps very carefully and made sure the card was not harmed. After installing the new fan, which was very easy, I stuck it back into the Power Mac and boot it up. However the monitor didn't find a signal.
I was glad that I installed Remote Desktop on the Power Mac so I was able to connect to it and see what's going on. I opened Apple System Profiler and noticed that the computer isn't properly recognizing the graphics card anymore! Instead of the very detailed information I'm used to seeing, this is what I saw below:
    pci10de,a:
    Type: VGA-Compatible Controller
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x252
    Revision ID: 0x00a3
I have no clue what this means as it seems like the computer still recognizes A video card. Also this also gave me the impression that the Power Mac is missing the drivers, but that's impossible as I haven't touched the software on the hard drive and nVidia drivers are part of OS X.
If the card is broken then fine, I'll take my losses and buy a new one as I would hate to just throw the computer away since it still more than fulfill my needs. But I just hope the AGP slot isn't broken.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Just for clarification:
You have two systems based on the same MS-7008 mainboard, correct? Both use the same BIOS Version?
In one system, the card is functioning, running in AGP 3.0 Mode x8 and in the other, same mainboard model, what are the symptoms of "video card not recognized" besides the AGP 2.0 Mode x4 limitation?
I mean, if you can see the BIOS Setup, the card is putting something out on the screen, right?

  • Video card not working

hi, im haveing some problems with my coputer its an hp compaq dc7800 sff PC. i got a new video card for it its a msi navida geforce gt610 i installed it and it worked fine then it started blue screening after it finished the windows xp loading screen it works fine when it loads fine and works ok with the coputer. im not sure whats causing the problems hope someone has a clue what im taking about. thank you

Hi: Did you uninstall the onboard Intel graphics adapter in the device manager before installing your new video card? If not, the Intel graphics drivers may be in conflict with the nVidia drivers causing blue screens, etc. If you did not uninstall the onboard Intel graphics, shut down and unplug the PC, remove your new video card, power on the PC and uninstall the Intel graphics adapter. Do not reboot as requested by Windows.  Shut down, unplug the PC reinstall your video card and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, or you had already uninstalled the Intel graphics adapter, then I do not have any other suggestions for you to try.

  • Video card not quite dead yet?

Had something interesting happen to my late 2009 27" i5 iMac. I've worked on Macs for years and never saw a case quite like this, but it's my machine this time, so maybe I need an outside perspective.
This weekend I watched an HD stream for 3 hours and you know how that get's the heat up and the fans spinning. Shortly after the stream was over, the screen froze and there was a lot of artifacting on the screen. I'd describe it as random little gray markings all over the screen.
Usually I see something like this and assume the video card is gone or on its way out. I tried rebooting and the screen froze with artifacts about half-way through startup. Then I booted to the recovery partition and the same thing. Booted to an external drive - same thing.
Eventually I just put it in Target Disk Mode and made a clone of the hard drive (went well, although there were pretty vertical bands on the screen). After that I left it alone.
Turned it on the next day and was surprised to see it boot up normally. It's been working for a couple of days now, so I assume the video card overheated and that was the issue. However, it's not 100%. Now when I watch Netflix, there a really strange choppy motion effect (making it unwatchable), but only when I watch non-HD stuff. HD streams fine. Weird, right?
I also tried running Dragon Age 2 as a test. Where it previously ran fine, now it has a seriously choppy look to it.
Has anyone seen something like this before? It's really odd to me that it works fine, but performance is diminished when pushed. There's another site I stream 1080p videos from and they look really choppy now, but if I download the video in 1080p, they play fine.
I don't know if I have a specific question and I think the writing is on the wall, but I guess I'd just like to hear from other techies for some perspective.

In case anyone finds this and is interesting, the video card indeed was faulty, but not quite dead. Replaced it and it worked fine after.

  • Do video cards not supported on Mac, work in bootcamp under windows?

I have recently purchased and installed Battlefield 3 on my 2006 Mac Pro1,1, on the windows partition and it plays okay on extremely low settings. I am using the ATI 4870 card I purchase from apple a year ago. I want to play the game at higher settings and found a video card "Sapphire radeon 6970 hd" that can run the game at great settings and great frame per second. The problem is that the card doesnt work on Macs (like my ati 4870 does), so I was wondering if the card would work on my windows partition, even if it doesn't work on OS X.  I would rather not have to buy a new PC. Thanks

I had already seen that site while googling, however I could not find information relating tom that specific card in my specific Mac. They had information about getting that card to work on OS x, bit it didn't mention if that worked with Mac 1,1. Also, I am only concned with whether it would work with the windows partition.

  • HP 6120n Sound won't work bought replacement sound card not sure of what to do

    HP 6120n  - Using win 7  - Sound won't work
Tried restarting and Troubleshooter and it not not solve the problem
Bought used replacement sound card (30 day warranty) but not sure of what to do to install it or even if it is necessary

    Hello @4u2bu,
I understand that the audio is not working on your HP Pavilion a6120n Desktop PC running Windows 7 and you are wondering it you should install the new audio card you purchased. I would recommend that you first try the steps set out in the HP Support document: No Sound from the Speakers or Headphones (Windows 7), which has been designed to address audio issues with computers running Windows 7.
Now if the above document does not work I would suspect a driver issue and since HP does not have audio drivers for your computer running Windows 7 I would suggest you go ahead and install the new audio card as it will have the needed drivers.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Charge of 2.99 appears on my credit card - not sure what was ordered?

I need to know what the $2.99 charge is for that appeared on my credit card statement.

You can check the purchase history on your account via the Store > View My Account (Store > View My Apple ID on iTunes 11) menu option on your computer's iTunes - I'm not sure whether that shows in-app purchases and/or auto-renewing subscriptions ). If it doesn't show  then you can try contacting iTunes support via this page and ask them if they can see what it was for : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Fan broke on my MSI HD4890 Cyclone card- not sure what to do...

I bought my card only a few months ago and it worked fine. However, I tried rearranging the slots in my case and placed a pci card next to the cyclone two slots away.
However, due to the weight of the heatpipe cooler on the 4890, the fan apparently tilted down a tiny bit into the area of the pci card and the fan hit a pin on the back of the card stripping off the fins while spinning at a high speed.
The card now cannot be used without having a fan on it cooling the heatsink, but Im stuck on what to do. The card is still in warranty, though Im not sure if this would be considered damage or not? I tried finding the manufacturer of the fan, Everflow, but their website does not give you any method of contacting them to get a replacement.
I called MSI and they stating I would need to send it in first, but if they consider it physical damage they will charge me ~$50 or more to fix it and return the card. The fan itself cant cost more than a couple dollars, and if theyre going to charge me to fix it I might as well buy an aftermarket cooler myself.
Anyone know what I should do or if this would fall into warranty because the heatsink is so heavy it makes the card tilt down?

Quote from: Svet on 24-May-10, 23:43:20
You have to contact reseller or MSI about it
I did contact MSI and theyre not being very helpful. They just said to send it in and if they determine it to be damaged theyre going to charge me a lot of money to fix it which I cant really afford and they dont want to sell me a replacement fan outright. The fix is simple, all you do is place the new fan on and screw it back on. I can try talking to newegg though Im not sure if they would be much help.

  • Video Card not working right.

Ok, I had a issue after I flashed my bios on my non reference 6950. Now my graphics are not working as they should. In Fear, I am running 20 FPS and it is pitiful looking. Any chance that someone has a non reference bios I can flash since apparently the saved bios I had sucks?

I apologize for not posting my specs, Below is what I have. I have also noticed something in AMD Vision Center. My GPU Clock speed and Memory speed go from 250 MHZ on the GPU and 100 MHZ on the memory and they will change between those and 840 MHZ on the GPU and 1250 on the memory.

  • Not sure if thread is dying

I have a small chat application passing sockets to seperate threads. The application is set to be a daemon thread so I can close the application that launches it.
I added small checks throughout the application to see the number of active threads.
There are two things happenning that I don't understand:
    1. When I first start the application there are always 61 (including newly created daemon) threads running. I assume these are necessary background threads running in the servlet container (Tomcat 5) and the JVM.
    2. When I log in with one client (creating a new socket and therefore new thread on the server's end) the thread count goes to 62. As I log in with other clients the thread count increases accordingly. The strange thing is that when I exit the client application therefore ending the run() method of that thread the first client to exit always seems to have its thread stay alive. By that I mean if I add 3 clients taking the thread count from 61 to 64, then close one client the thread count stays at 64. But then if I close another client then the thread count goes down to 63. The other strange thing is that if I close all clients the thread count remains at 62 (instead of 61 where it should be) and if I then log in another client the thread count remains at 62 but increases with every new client after that. It seems that the first client thread stays active and somehow new sockets can just replace that thread. Since none of the code is different if it's the first socket or the 20th....how can this first one not die and then even get replaced.
Sorry for the long description....I really am not that well versed in threads. If anyone could shine some light on this problem (or even offer a suggestion as how to better monitor whether the threads are dying or not) I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

You should experiment/test a little more. Dig around until you can find out what's going on. It's not hard.
For example, try naming all of your threads. This will allow you to see which threads are yours and which belong to the system. Then, print out the names of only the threads you created, from time to time. You might do this by matching on the name, or perhaps by assigning all of your threads to a single thread group. You also might want to print a message when your thread terminates (that is, at the very bottom of its run() method), for each thread.
By the way, jconsole is a very useful JVM monitoring tool. It allows you to connect to your application and see which threads are running and what they are doing (among other things). It comes with the Sun JDK.

  • Using ATV2/3 with non-HDMI Receiver and theater projector and also need iTunes downloaded movies to work.   I'm thinking to use the Toslink digital out for surround sound and an HDMI to RGB converter for video but not sure the iTunes DRM will prevent?

I have a theater with a Runco projector but non HDMI. alas, my receiver is non HDMI. Changing electronics and projector is a non-starter.
I would like to be able to buy HD movies on iTunes and watch them by streaming via Apple TV3. My plan is to capture surround sound from the TosLink digital out, which my preamp/receiver can handle. For the video, I need to convert the HDMI to RGB component to feed my receiver.
This is where iTunes DRM and HDCP issues might arise. I am under the impression that I need an non-HDMI compliant converter so that ATV3 can even talk to my receiver. It is my understanding that this is possible and takes care of the HDCP issue. But what about the DRM issue? All I want to do is buy and watch HD movies, no bad intentions. I find it incredible that iit might not be possible.
Anyways, is there a 100% certain approach even if it costs up to $300-400. Again, changing hardware is a non-starter so please avoid the obvious "buy an HDMI amp and projector".
    Thanks

  • 80G Video iPod - Not sure what the problem is

So this problem just randomly started occuring. What will happen is my iPod will freeze completely, and then it will go to this screen which has a warning i have never seen before. It is an iPod with a triangular warning sign on it (with exclamation mark on it). There is text under the warning sign saying "www.apple.com/support/ipod". If anyone has had this problem before and/or know how to fix it, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks a ton.

    See if these help.
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point after disconnecting.

  • New video card and now my computer wont sync the majority of my songs

My computer just got a new video card(not a motherboard i was wrong on my last question) and ever since they shipped it back whenever i plug in my ipod it says that most of my songs were not copied to my ipod because i am not authorized to play them on this computer. 700 of my 800 songs will not transfer to my ipod. i tried deauthorizing and reauthorizing several times and i deleted the sc folder too as suggested.
    help please????
i dont know what to do. and i want my songs back.

Are you sure it meets all the requirements.. like at least 2 gb of ram and at least an intel core 2 duo proccesor?
