Video card suggestions for Mac Pro early 2007 (Rev a)
Hello,
I have a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core. I bought it in March of 2007 so it is a certain type of Mac Pro. I think they call it Rev A.
I want to put in a more up to date video card that is really nice and works with 3d and after effects.
What are my choices for video cards? Am I limited to certain cards because of the year I bought my Mac Pro? I don't have the money to go up to the really nice $1000 dollar cards but I'd like a real nice ATI card. I think I'm done with Nvidia. They keep burning up.
Thanks!

Hey Stephan,
One more question and this will be solved. I'll rep you again of course . I know that nVidia cards cannot do SLI in OS X. I have two and was super disappointed when I bought my first mac (this one) to learn that this option is not available.
Are ATI cards any different? They have the Crossfire capability and since they seem more supportive of Apple products, I was wondering if they also can support the Crossfire capability.
Thanks,
Spiral

Looking for advice on Mac Pro with a dying video card. This the early Xeon dual core 3.0Ghz with an ATI Radeon X1900. Maybe the Nvidia Quadro 4500. I know there is s Quadro 4800 which I don't know if will will work with this older Mac Pro. Links and advice is appreciated.
Both cards will work with your computer although that's not stated on Apple's website. I'm using a 5770 in a first generation Mac Pro and it works quite well. I can't get the best performance from it because my MP only has PCI Express 1.0 slots.

Hardware for Mac Pro early 2008
Hi there
We have very old Macs at our university. We will renew them next year, however we need to hook up our magnificent video monitors to Premiere Pro CC. There is only DVI and FireWire signal out, no thunderbolt. Inputs on the monitor are HD SDI and HDMI.
I´m sure there must be Hardware for this Mac Pro (2008) in order to connect to monitor digitally. I´m sure there were options when Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 was the current version back in 2008. Any ideas?
JonI have already connected two monitors via a DVI “hub”. So they are up and running fine.
The hub don´t have any more outputs of any kind. Also I´m not sure if the quality would be good enough for the monitor output.
Now I also realised that there is no HDMI input on the monitor, only HD SDI.
Please look at photo here for info on my current graphics card.
Best,
Jon

ESata card for Mac Pro (Early 2008)
I am looking for another two port eSata card for my Mac Pro (Early 2008) model. The card I ordered before Christmas from Amazon (UK) has just arrived but doesn't fit (Lacie eSATA PCI CARD)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LaCie-130823-eSATA-PCI-Card/dp/B001O9KEKM/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1294318895&sr=8-1
It's only for two drives I use from time to time to back up my HD Video (personal family stuff only).
Any recommendations?
Many thanks, MattI have the Sonnet E2P in my Mac Pro Early 2008. Also available in UK from here:
http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=421
And "Yes": that arrangement is the PCI-Express card connector - that's what you need.
It's definitely a Mac card - Sonnet product page here has latest drivers, etc.:
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae2p.html
(Currently = v 1.2.5)
Edit: you could always use one of these:
http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=511
!http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/images/466-img-main.jpg!
It extends the unused motherboard SATA ports to the back panel. Cheaper, but requires you to partially disassemble your Mac Pro to install it, and the drives thus attached are NOT swappable while your Mac Pro is powered on - necessitating a power-cycling of your Mac to mount/unmount drives connected to this card.
With the E2P you can mount/unmount drives without powering off your Mac. I'd go with the E2P! -
External graphic card for mac pro (early 2008)
I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) where the graphics card seems to be dead.
I have no replacement and a new one is a little too expensive for what I'm gonna use it for. (400$).
Also the harddrive died.
So now I have an unconfigured Mac Pro with no display.
I can't figure out if there is a way to boot it and have it somehow share its screen during a first install?
Is there an external USB/firewire graphics card that will act as a master display output already when plugged in?macvidcards on ebay can held on gpu, and disk drives are easy and shouldbe aregular yearly upgrade

Best graphics card for Mac Pro Early 2008?
I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 with the default graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600), and would like to make an upgrade to a better graphics card that will run games smoothly. I'm not an expert with computers at all, but all I know is I would like to buy a graphics card for around $200-$300 (If it's more expensive then that's ok, but preferrably this price range) that will get me the best performance possible. I play games like Minecraft, Skyrim, and Team Fortress 2. Thank you for any help/recommendations you can provide!
Also, I wasn't sure which section to post this in, but feel free to move this thread. Also, to provide more information (not sure if needed), I have dual monitors and the following specs:
Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
My two displays are LG ULTRAWIDE Display (2560 x 1080) and LED Cinema Display (24-inch, Late 2008, 1920 x 1200) -
Anyone adding USB 3 ports to the older Mac Pro desktop towers?
I looked at HighPoint, Orinico and StarTek but I'm leaning towards Inateck given their recent PCI-E board update specifically for Mac Pro.
Anyone have any USB 3 recommendations or horror stories? I've got all 4 internal drive bays taken so I don't think I can easily get power to the board, so I'm hoping the internal PCI-E power will be enough for most USB 3 devices.
thanks,
StephenThere is one that seems to be popular that works with 10.8.2 and above.

Is there any thunderbolt card available for mac pro?
I have a blackmagic intensity extreme, which has thunderbolt port. But I am unable to use it with Mac Pro as there is no thunderbolt port on it. Any suggestions?
Thanks!5kFilmGuy wrote:
Here's a clue at a Thunderbolt PCIe card that may be available for cpu's with an open 16x slot.
HP is now offering a Thunderbolt option for thier Z820 workstation model.
Actually, no. That computer was designed for thunderbolt from the start. It is a feature enabler card, not an expansion card.
I hope this will change soon, but not soon enough to hold my breath.
There will never be a thunderbolt card for Mac Pros.
Two reasons:
1- Even the 2012 Mac pro used 2 year old hardware, that means even the very last Mac Pro Apple sold last month used 3 year old technology. Its not economical to make new hardware for old technology in a very small market.
2- Thunderbolt communicates directly with the CPU, GPU and PCIe hardware. That means they have to be designed to communicate with the thunderbolt controller. Since thunderbolt was introduced in 2011, a full year after the last Mac Pro (5,1) was designed, its hardware has no possible way to communicate with it.
Thunderbolt is not "an extension of the PCIe bus" like eSATA is an extension of SATA, its an entirely different communication protocol.
If it were just an extension, it would be far cheaper and easier to implement and there would be more than just a handful of products on the market that support it. Right now thunderbolt is making Firewire look like a runaway success! -

Upgrading a Video Card for Mac Pro (Early 2008)
I have little experience upgrading systems hardware and I was hoping to get some input as I try to figure out a cost effective card for my 2008 mac.
What I have:
* 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel
* ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
* with OSX 10.10.2 Yosemite
. . . so far I am looking at the 5770 HD to be a likely replacement if I buy the right one (some, if I'm understanding correctly, aren't compatible because they were flashed for older systems or are simply defective and so require selective shopping— hence, they were not officially supported). Also, I am unsure if OS Yosemite runs the older cards.
I work with Photoshop, Illustrator, and play games like Starcraft2 and WoW.
My question is:
Which video cards are compatible with my system and what would be the best replacement? . . . and will I have to downgrade from OS Yosemite to run certain cards?
Thanks in advance!Hi there, welcome to the community.
My advice to you, to achieve cost effective performance, would be to use any vanilla NVIDIA graphics card. Newer versions of Mac OS X have drivers that should be compatible with the card out of the box. The only downside to using a non-mac specific card is that you wont see the boot up process, as the graphics card wont be initialized until the system is completely loaded. If this concerns you, leave your old card in one of the slower, unused slots if possible.
If you are worried about compatibility, I would recommend purchasing at Best Buy, where you can take advantage of their return policy.

Graphics card upgrade options for Mac Pro (early 2008) Model 3.1
Hi,
What are my options if I wish to upgrade the stock graphics card? I seem to remember there being one that was about £80 but I can no longer check as the site is only listing the 2009 mac pros now.
Any assistance would be gratefully received!Your current options are:
ATI 2600
Nvidia 8800
Nvidia 5600
Or third-party ATI 3870 Mac/PC Edition.
Presumably the new ATI 4870 will work in the Early 2008 MP, but requires OS X 10.5.7 which is not yet released. You can find benchmarks at Bare Feats. -
Apple Raid Card panic on Mac Pro Early 2008 after installing SSD as an enhanced JBOD.
I recently installed a SSD drive in my Mac Pro to replace an aging, original boot drive. I have an Apple raid card with 3 other hds attached - all in an enhanced JBOD configuration. After installing the SSD from OWC (3G Electra SATA II Compatible) everything appeared to work fine. But after 36 hours I received a apple raid card kernel panic alert. See below for diagnostic crash log. OWC support says that their drive should work fine - now I am not so sure. Anyone out there with suggestions/solutions is most welcomed.

Thunderbolt Bus:RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards" -
The Radeon X1900 XT video card went bad in my Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon. (I tried it with a good one at the office). I found one online that was $250. I don't need the gaming capacity of this card and was wondering if there were less expensive video cards that I could use in this machine. I run Adobe Creative Suites for graphics design and have a 23" Apply display. Thank you for any help that you can provide. -PretzelMcK
Then pick up the ATI 5770 AND upgrade to 10.6.8.
Same price for a good card that will work and helps to have 1GB VRAM.
There aren't any other real choices let alone less expensive.
Even the ebay links I had and not a lot of choices. -
Video Card and Video Card Configurations for MacBook Pro
Does anyone know where I look to confirm which video card is in my MacBook Pro and also examine the current configurations and possibly look at configuration values for the video card.
I'm kind of new to Mac, but on the Windows world I would right click on the screen and then navigate to the Advanced Video card configurations. Is there something analogous in the Mac world?
Thanks again.Hi Jason,
use the System Profiler app from the Applications/Utilities Folder to 'examine' the insides of your MBP.
You can also click on the Apple Icon in the Top Menu, choose About This Mac and the the More (Further) Informations button. (I have a german OSX...).
The only avaiable configuration options are found in the System Preferences (Display and Energy Savings).
Have Fun

Adding an additional video card to my Mac Pro 1,1
Hello all,
I've got an old Mac Pro 1,1 with a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT graphics card in it. I'd like to add another graphics card to my machine in order to run another display. I was looking at the ATI Radeon 5770 Graphics upgrade kit sold in the Apple store, but am wondering if I might as well just get another of the stock cards off of ebay. I'm not doing nay hard core video stuff with this computer. It runs all the multi-media for our church on Sunday mornings, so it simply does video playback. I've found a bunch of them on ebay, but I'm not sure if there are PC versions and MAC versions of this card. Does anyone know?
