HELLO I HAVE A PC WITH INTEGRATED CARD 1 : NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 740M AND 2 : INTEL HD GRAPHICS FAMILY , I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW AND ' POSSIBLE WHILE THE CARD GAME ISOLATE INTEL , WHY ' IS ELIMINATE THE SCREEN TURNS BLACK THANKS

Hi @HP64 ,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a dynamite  place to find answers and information!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
It is my understanding that your notebook has switchable graphics and when you launch the card game it utilizes the Intel graphics and the  display will go black or blank.
Have you ran the HP Support Assistant  to aid with any HP updates and help resolve issues.
Here are  documents that should help you overcome this difficulty.
Overview of Switchable Graphics or Dual GPUs
Switchable Graphics on Notebooks Configured with Intel and ATI GPUs
If you would like further assistance please provide your exact model of HP notebook and your Operating System
I hope this helps!

  • K8N Neo2-- IRQ Sharing of Network and Video Card

With the Giga onboard network card enabled it is using the same IRQ as my MSI 6800GT video card (16).  i know that IRQ sharing is "okay" but i also know that the two devices will still have to "take turns" then.  i'd rather not have this.  i disabled my comm ports, sata1/2 ports, paralell ports, and 1394 ports.  many irq's are available.  for the time being i disabled the giga card and i'm using the nvidia card instead as that seems to use its own irq (23).  i could only find one other thread about this and the solution was to use the nvidia card.  i'd rather use the giga card unless someone knows that the nvidia is better.

No cards installed except for the video card.  I am using onboard sound and network.
    IRQ 0   System timer   OK
IRQ 1   Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard   OK
IRQ 6   Standard floppy disk controller   OK
IRQ 8   System CMOS/real time clock   OK
IRQ 9   Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System   OK
IRQ 10   NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management   OK
IRQ 13   Numeric data processor   OK
IRQ 14   Primary IDE Channel   OK
IRQ 15   Secondary IDE Channel   OK
IRQ 16   NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT by www.TweaksRUs.com   OK
IRQ 21   Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller   OK
IRQ 21   Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller   OK
IRQ 22   Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller   OK
IRQ 22   Realtek AC'97 Audio   OK
IRQ 23   Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller   OK
IRQ 23   NVIDIA Network Bus Enumerator   OK
This is with the Giga card disabled.  When it is enabled it uses IRQ 16 (even with the nvidia disabled). 11, 12, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 are free.

  • Onboard video card with shared memory??

Congratulations Apple on the new Intel-based Mac Mini! I was patiently waiting the arrival of a faster version of the Mini.
However, I've noticed one horrible mistake. The Intel GMA950 graphics card is attached to the motherboard? What? Apple has decided to make there affordable systems even less gamer-friendly?
So what you're saying is that if you want to play World of Warcraft or any of the few powerful games designed for the Mac, you must purchase a system that is at least $1,300?
I just bought a Dell for $250 that runs World of Warcraft and other games rather smoothly. Hmm, lets see, $200 or $1,300? Which would you rather spend?
Seriously though, Apple needs to sit down and rethink there strategy for the gamers industry.
How about offering a system that has at least a 64MB video card (at least meet the MINIMUM latest game requirements) and is affordable (say under $1,000 even)?
The Apple Macintosh is indeed the Cadillac or Mercedes of personal computing when it comes to looks. But PCs are readily becoming more attractive (especially when comparing performance rating and prices).
    Thanks,
    James

I've never heard of this before. Is it documented
anyplace, or on any Mac web site?
You can read about it in this Thinksecret article: http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0509macmini2.html . Also, if you look at the user comments on Amazon, you'll see a number of references by recipients of the silent upgrade machines.

  • NVIDIA Issues; hitting the video card hangs the machine

Hello everybody, this could easily be placed under the Kernel and Hardware forum, but this one suits my experience level better.  I tried
searching for some similar issues to what I am having, but wasn't able to come up with anything. (Perhaps I was an unknown keyword off in my searches. )
Additionally, thanks in advance for any help! I'm pretty much out of ideas short of replacing some hardware.
My problem is that whenever my desktop displays anything that is graphically intensive, it freezes. I first experienced this while I had Slackware 13.1 installed when trying to run Minecraft. I had been running it successfully for a month or two when it hung while I was playing. I switched over to Arch in the hopes that it would be easier for me to troubleshoot the problem. This was a few months ago, and I've not been able to figure it out.
I'm running with an i7 930 CPU, GTX 480 video card, and six gigs of RAM. My xorg.conf is below:

I dug through my logs and the only strange thing I found was in kernel.log:

For what it's worth, here is my Xorg.0.conf (but the only error is related to my keyboard, which actually works fine):

The more I investigate, the more I feel like this could be a hardware problem. I checked the CPU temp first, but it only reaches ~32 degrees celsius when the system hangs, so I doubt that's the cause. I've checked the cables (power and otherwise) between everything in my box, and it's all solid. I've also taken the sides off, thinking it my be an air flow issue, but that didn't solve it either.
On the software side of things, I've got nvidia, nvidia-utils, and lib32-nvidia-utils installed and they aren't popping any errors that I can see. When I run glxinfor or glxgears, nothing happens, the terminal just prompts me for input (which is actually an improvement, in Slackware, they hung the machine).
Again, any help on this issue is greatly appreciated, I'm at my wit's end about it.

I had a similar problem that turned out to be the graphics card working itself loose. So, if you haven't already, try taking it out, cleaning the contacts and plugging it back in. Worth a try and worked for me
Also, Xorg 1.10.2 & the nvidia proprietary driver don't seem to be in conflict for me so I think williewillus is mistaken.

  • Matrox M9138 video card doesn't like system update

Hi thanks to all who helped me get this video card working about 18 months ago! https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=89108&p=1
Unfortunately updating with pacman -Syu has stopped the video card from working at all. I now write to you using the VESA driver and everything looks way to big! 1024x768 on a 30" monitor when I normally use 1920x1200.
This is what I get if I try to startx with the m9x Matrox driver:

I understand from reading around that Linux users from many distros have problems with Matrox graphics cards when they update Xorg, and the only solution mentioned is to downgrade to a previous version of Xorg. I'm not sure if this applies to me because the error messages when I try to startx don't seem relevant, but anyway I've tried downgrading the following packages from my pacman cache:
    pacman -U xorg-server-utils-7.6-2-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-apps-7.6-1-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xrdb-1.0.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-fonts-encodings-1.0.4-1-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xauth-1.0.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xcmsdb-1.0.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xkbutils-1.0.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-fonts-75dpi-1.0.1-3-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xmodmap-1.0.5-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xbacklight-1.1.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xset-1.2.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xrandr-1.3.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-docs-1.6-1-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xkbcomp-1.2.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xprop-1.2.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-smproxy-1.0.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xkb-utils-7.6-1-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xhost-1.0.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xev-1.1.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-twm-1.0.6-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xlsatoms-1.1.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-mkfontdir-1.0.6-2-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xkill-1.0.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-x11perf-1.5.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-bdftopcf-1.0.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xsetroot-1.1.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xkbevd-1.1.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-luit-1.1.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xcursorgen-1.0.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xgamma-1.0.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xdriinfo-1.0.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-res-utils-1.0.3-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz xorg-xvinfo-1.1.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xinit-1.3.0-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xwd-1.0.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-fonts-alias-1.0.2-1-any.pkg.tar.gz xorg-fonts-100dpi-1.0.1-3-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-utils-7.6-7-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-server-1.10.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-setxkbmap-1.2.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-sessreg-1.0.6-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-font-utils-7.6-2-any.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xinput-1.5.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-fonts-misc-1.0.0-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz xorg-iceauth-1.0.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xwininfo-1.1.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xrefresh-1.0.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-font-util-1.2.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xpr-1.0.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xdpyinfo-1.2.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xwud-1.0.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-xlsclients-1.1.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-mkfontscale-1.0.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-server-common-1.10.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

Do you want to skip the above packages for this upgrade? [y/N]
When I try to downgrade the dependants first they also seem to have dependants, and then I try the same trick and it turns out some files are mutually dependant! Is there any way to force a downgrade of all packages, completely ignoring dependancies? In theory this should bring my system back to how it was a couple of days ago before I did the update that stopped my graphics card working.

  • How or Can I upgrade my laptop's video card?

is it possible? First of all I don't know if my laptop video card is intergrated, i heard if it is, you cant upgrade...here are my specs for my Toshiba Satelite L675D
    AMD Phenom™ II dual-core processor N640*
    4GB DDR3 memory
500GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics
    Windows 7
    Processor Platform VISION Premium
    Video Memory256-1917MB (dynamically allocated shared)
thank you..and if it is upgradable..can you please tell me a good graphics card that can probably run Starcraft 2 on high maybe ultra? something i can buy from best buy or wal mart, not online...thanks

Graphics Memory* 128MB-1759MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory
But in my specs it says that i have one free PCI-E slot.  I have no idea how to access it nor do i have any intention. (I'm very un-tech savy )  Anyway, is there anyway i could have someone that knows there way around a computer open it up and see if its possible to add another graphics card?  Or would i be better off just getting a High-Def monitor (this is an option)?
See above - if you have a laptop, then it is almost guaranteed that you cannot upgrade the graphics.  It is 100% guaranteed in the case of laptops with Intel integrated graphics, which you have.
I have no idea why a laptop would advertise a PCI-e slot - Perhaps it has a Mini-PCIe slot that a mobile broadband card can be installed into?  Or do you mean the ExpressCard expansion slot?
If you don't have a laptop and instead have a desktop, you probably should have posted a new thread rather than to a laptop thread to avoid confusion.

  • New video card for HP Pavillion Elite HPE-170t

Hi, I'm starting to get some screen artifacts sporadically, Ithink my video card is starting to go bad. i want to get a new one, but I am not sure what will fit. My computer  HP Pavillion Elite HPE-170t:
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-860 quad-core processor [2.8GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache]
    8GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM
    1TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
1GB ATI Radeon HD 4850 [2 DVI, HDMI and VGA adapters]
    Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner
15-in-1 memory card reader, 1 USB, 1394, audio
    No TV Tuner
    Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium
I see by some other questions here several video cards suggested, but those replies were a few years old and those video cards are no longer available.
So, any suggestions on newer video cards under $200 that will pretty much fit and work as easily as possible? Thanks!
    This question was solved.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I don't have another monitor to try, but the artifacts seem to sometimes move along with the mouse cursor. Sometimes I can scrill the artifacts away, other times the screen freezes.
I do have room for a double width card,  but I was looking at the XFX R7 250E 800MHz 1GB DDR5 DP HDMI DVI Graphics Card, which seems to be a newer model of the XFX AMD Radeon HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 . Both are single wide and don't need an extra power connection.

  • 24" iMac--latest models. Which video card option to choose?

I am going to buy a new iMac 24" with 4 GB RAM. There is a $300 difference between two of the models, based mainly, so far as I can tell, on a processor speed difference of 2.6 to 2.9 Ghz, but mainly on the video card.
The lower priced iMac has a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
The higher priced iMac has NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
I use my current iMac (mid-2007 version, 4 GB, Radeon 2600 HD with 256 MB VRAM) for all the usual things like email, word processing and web surfing, but also for watching movies, high def streamed TV, including sports events. I do not do video editing nor do I play games on the computer. I am using approx 1 GB of RAM all the time for Fusion to run Windows, since I have a couple of programs that have no Mac equivalent.
Am I losing 256 MB of system RAM with the GeForce 9400M since it doesn't have its own memory like the Radeon 2600 HD, and will I miss the memory? Is the GeForce still a better video card than the Radeon, even with the shared memory?
The only real question is, should I spend the extra $300 to get the video card with its own memory, assuming I don't need the faster processor speed?

_+The only real question is, should I spend the extra $300 to get the video card with its own memory, assuming I don't need the faster processor speed?+_
I see from your new thread today that you have not yet made this purchase.
To get the upgraded hardware you really want, and for only $50 (not $300) above the cost you're willing to pay for the new 2.66, you can buy the refurbished 2.93 current 4GB RAM model direct from Apple, and it will have exact same warranty (and be treated by Apple) as a new one.
While it is not in today's list of refurbs at the online Store, it was there Monday - simply call now and they will put you on the waiting list for a refurbed MB419LL/A @ $1,549 w/ free shipping, and you will have it in a week or two. Just a few days extra wait for the model of your dreams, and yes it will come with Snow Leopard:D

  • Displays no longer recognised, it is my video card?

I have two Dell 22" widescreen monitors, and two computers plugged into both them via the DVI and VGA inputs. One is a 2x3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro and the other is an older G5 PowerPC, both are running Leopard, the G5 is on 10.5.4, the Mac Pro is on 10.5.8.
I have them set so that the DVI input on the left monitor and the VGA input on the right monitor is for the Mac Pro and the remaining inputs are for the G5.
This has worked perfectly for the last year, and allows me to switch views between our loading station (the G5) and are encoding and graphics station (Mac Pro, got to love multi-tasking staff).
Unfortunately this morning, the Mac Pro is not showing on the monitors. I can hear it power up fine, and the monitors work fine for the G5.
I have screen sharing on the Mac Pro so that I can check on rendering status from other rooms. Usually it defaults to the dual screen view but this morning, the desktop picture has reverted to the standard blue background and the display is set to 1280x1024, but at least I know the computer is working.
Going to About My Mac, more info, Graphics/Displays shows

Kernel Extension Info: No Kext Loaded
    Displays:
    *Display Connector*
And then there is nothing listed (whereas on the G5 this lists the Dell monitors)
Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions? Or better yet, answers? Is it the video card?

Same issue here, My Mac Pro will not wake monitors from sleep (intermittent). This is a huge pain in the rear. I use my Mac Pro as my alarm clock. System wakes at 6:45, Apple Script kicks off from iCal at 7:00 and starts iTunes and pull up the weather and news. As the speakers are integrated with the display when they do not wake from sleep, I wake up late.
I can connect via ARD when the Mac Pro is in this state, System profiler says there is no Kext loaded. When quit system profiler then enter the shell and do a "sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/ATI2600Controller.kext" and then restart system profiler it is the same result No Kext Loaded.
This all screams Firmware or Booter issue to me. The system does not cast any Blinking Power Led Errors (or tones), The System Chimes Normally but does not go to a happy gray screen that is the booter loading critical Kexts.
Below is my System Profiler from when the Kext does load correctly. Please include your System profiler report when your Mac Pro is in a working state as well.
I still love My Mac pro... but I cant afford to be late to work any more...

  • My 27" imac won't boot in normal mode. The screen stays white. I have upgraded to Yosemite. However, the computer does boot in safe mode. Could this be a virus related issue or possibly a video card issue?

My 27" iMac will not boot in normal mode. The screen stays white. The computer will boot in safe mode. Could this be virus related or is it possibly an issue with my video card. Before this happened, my computer screen was flashing weird things and the computer would unexpectedly power down.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Video card failure?

My old iMac G5 is about to lose its graphic card. The image on the screen jitters and has vertical bands, some color distortion and blocks of patterns replacing some of the desktop. Eventually the whole thing lo Is there any way that I can migrate to my new iMac.

    Hello,
Assuming the worst happens this shouldn't be an impediment to moving to a new Mac.
You can boot the iMac into Target Disk Mode (by holding the T key down during the startup of the old iMac) with the Macs connected by Firewire then the old Mac appears as a hard disk drive on the other Mac. You can the using Migration Assistant or manually transfer your files across.
    Alternatives:
    1.     To look at setting up screen sharing on the old iMac if you already have another computer on the same network
    2.     Using an external monitor/flat screen TV via the MiniVGA port on the Mac (this might not work though if the fault is with the video card rather than the display).

  • Mid 2007 24" imac only boots without video card installed

, do i need a new one or is it something else?
one day it decided to not boot. No chime, black screen. Can hear fans and cd/dvd spin.  Diag. leds 1,2&3 lit 4 is not.  Did some googling, and eventually found out that if i take the MMX ATI 2600HD video card out of the computer and turn it on, it boots up fine (still no chime however) and i am able to use screen sharing from my other mac to access it. Everything looks and works as normal, only there is no screen of its own. the keyboard wors fine, mouse, cd/dvd drive etc.  I have already purchased and installed a new PSU at $120 which did not fix a thing, so i am hesitant to just assume that buying a new video card will solve my problem. so my first question is, will buying and installing a new video card fix it? and if so can i purchase an upgraded video card other than the stock ATI 2600HD? i have heard that there is an NVIDIA card that is compatible a GeForce 8800 GS 512MB i believe. and third, if it is compatible, will it work with the Heatsink for the ATI 2600HD or do i need to buy that as well??
I am trying to avoid the BS canned answer that apple loves to give as a solution, which is replace the logic Board. At nearly $1,000 I'll spend my time and effort it may take to actually find the reason it broke and attempt to fix it rather than just replace the whole thing with a new one. any suggestions or advice graetly appreciated.

so, a strange development on my imac problem. I have ordered a new video card for it, a 2600hd pro. today out of curiosity i punched the numbers i could find from the card that was in there and it comes up as a ati 2400xt card. that card was the one for the 20" model not my 24". whats up with that? does that mean that when my new 2600hd pro gets here it will not work in my system? I sure hope so or apple has some splaining to do!

  • PS CS5 workaround to non compliant Shader3.x/OpenGL 2.0 video cards

Stumbled upon a possible workaround for those who want to use some of the latest CS5 PhotoShop enhancements such as 3D effects and Repoussee which is worth sharing.  Background.... home workstation is a i7-920 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit o/s with modest NVidia GTS250 which is fully hardware compliant Shader 3.x and OpenGL 2.0 however my company issued laptop used for traveling demo's is a standard Dell Latitude D620 with non compliant Intel GPU which was unable to create simple 3D effects with any invoked PhotoShop graphic.  Each of the 3D effects from the PhotoShop CS5 pull downs were grayed out and verified as a non compliant via Edit --> Preferences -->Performance on the Dell D620.  Finally had time to create a simple "down and dirty" 3D graphic using either the predefined hat or can 3D effect composed on the i7-920 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit o/s then saved as a file type PSD to a flash drive.
Open the same created file on my Dell D620, got a warning message the built in GPU on the Dell D620 was non compliant hardware hence rendering would be via software (versus video hardware).  The 3D can opened on the Dell but more importantly I was able to successfully perform edits.  Long story short you might be able to circumvent non compliant video card issues by opening a saved 3D PSD file which will render/edit on non-compliant GPU's.  BTW, my D620 is 32-bit Windows XP Professional SP3.  If others can try my premise and feed back to this forum it would prove beneficial to all the members in this forum.  Can anyone validate this on say laptops other than a Dell D620 and Dell E6410?  I suspect once you call in a 3D PSD file composed on a non-compliant platform, it toggles a PhotoShop "on" bit to enable 3D software rendering.   Talk about being stoked on this exercise

Forgot to mention you still have to have CS5 installed on your non-compliant laptop.  Wouldn't it be funny if this is a PS bug requiring a toggled bit to be set in order to render in 3D?

  • Question about Video Cards on Laptops

Hi everyone, and sorry if I post this in the wrong area. I own a few computers, some are consider ancient and others are somewhat old but can run Windows XP just fine. I have a question about the computers in the stores today.
I am looking to invest in a new laptop, possibly a desktop in the near future depending on my budget. The question I have about video cards today is that, I enjoy a good MMO game now and then, I don't expect to play heavy intensive games, just maybe some more advance games. I notice that for one game that I want to play, it requires a video card to have (Shadow Rendering, Vertex and Pixle Shaders). Do the computers today have those as standard for thier video card? Or do I have to invest in a little bit more expensive laptop/desktop. I am willing to invest money for some more RAM, if I need to improve its preformance. The reason I ask is because I have a 4 year old Laptop with a broken keyboard, and I was thinking about just replacing the laptop with a newer one. it has some pretty good specs and runs everything fine, but it can not play certain games because of those missing video requirements. (Current laptop incase someone is curious: 1.5Ghz Celeron M, 1GB memory 64MB video (Shared) ) Thanks to anyone who has the answer to this question. (P.S sorry if everything is scrunched together. for some reason the formatting is wierd on Opera web browser

Graphics cards have all those standard today... or at least they should unless you get a really cheap Graphics card. The kind of graphics card and processor and other specs of the computer you want to get should depend on what you want to do with it. It also depends on the kind of games you want to play. If you're playing FPS [first person shooter] then you need a really good graphics card and processor. If you're playing something like Diablo 2 or something that's on the lower end of graphics then you just need decent specs. Graphics cards, I suggest something with aGeForce Nividia card... as of today, they are in the 9 series for high-end cards I believe. For processors... get something like Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 or T9600 or the Core 2 Quatros or Extremes. Extremes are intended for hardcore gaming and would be more expensive. For RAM you should have at least 2GB... you can always upgrade that later.
    For laptops my suggestions are:
    $3k+ get a customized alienware
$2-3 get a customized dell xps, or macbook pro [although if you're gaming i would suggest you dual boot with windows xp or vista]
$1-2k get a cheaper customized dell, or sony vaio
under $1k... well I don't know what to say... you can't really get a nice gaming computer for under that price.
I personally DO NOT like HP computers at all because they are so quirky and have so many problems and break down easily.

  • Getting the name of the installed video card

I'm trying to discover if exists any way in java to get the name (ATI, nVidia, Creative) and other properties (version, memory size,...) of the installed video card where the jvm is running.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joan

Definitely not directly with Java APIs....
    2 approaches...
    1. get another external program to do the work for you, and export it to a text file.
then you parse then text file.
On WinXP, there's a program called msinfo32.exe in
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo
type msinfo32 /? for a list of command line options.
Looks like you can route it to a text file.
    2. Write a low level JNI library in native Windows C++, which somehow finds that hardware specific information from the Windows API.
    regards,
    Owen
