Video chat with bonjour, no internet

Hi gang,
I'm trying to set up a video chat using an Airport network that is not hooked up to the Internet. The Airport network is configured correctly, and my two laptops can see each other in iChat under the Bonjour list. They can communicate using the text chat. However, when trying to use video, the invitation window never shows up on the other laptop's screen.
Any ideas?
Cheers!

Hi Phil,
What device is the Wireless Base Station ?
If it is not an Airport one it needs to have the Ports for iChat allowed. This will mean the one for Bonjour to be allowed for multiple computers and not just forwarded to one computer.
The ports are 5297. 5298, 5353 all on the UDP protocol and 5298 also on TCP.
If the device has UPnP then use that or otherwise use Triggering (Special Applications on some devices)
Not all devices will block LAN traffic this way but it is worth checking.
On the Macs do you have the Mac Firewall On ?
If so this will need a New setting started (The Current Bonjour lists the ports as TCP as brought forward from Panther)
After clicking New button choose Other from the drop down
Add the ports as the TCP and UDP descriptions above.
Name the entry in Description and Add/Apply
Make sure it is Ticked to use.
Also check the Advance Section and make sure Block All UDP Traffic and Stealth are not selected.

  • Video Chat with Non-Mac

    I have been trying to video chat with a Dell Inspiron who has AIM and a webcam. Though the video icon doesn't show up next to the user name on iChat (only the telephone shows). I have changed my settings so that the bandwidth limit is 500 and the streaming speed is 1.5 like other directions said, but I still cannot even connect to video chat with this person. I am on wireless internet, but I am not sharing files. Like I have read in other posts, I am also getting the error -8 saying that there is no camera or that I have not accepted the invitation (even when I click accept). Is there any way to fix this problem?
    Thanks.

    Has he done the bit to select his camera ?
    Open AIM
    Press F7 > Use the Second item (Enhanced IM) > and select the camera in the drop down.
    If his modem or router is using UPnP then he will need to allow that in the Vista Firewall
    My understanding is that the Vista firewall is close enough for these instructions to be used http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page12.html#_Service
    Of course if he does not have UPnP they he will need to open port 1024-5000 + port 5190 for AIM

  • Like to set up video chat with Edinburgh Scotland

    I would like to set up a video chat with my 87 year old uncle near Edinburgh Scotland and my 88 year old Mother in the US.
    I plan to have her over for the chat as a surprise.
    My Uncle has a PC - (connect speed unknown.) He is partially capable of setting up his end, but may not know enough to get started.
    He sent me a site to download MicroSoft messenger 6.02 for Mac which I did just to have but prefer the iChat route.
    I have a new MBPro 2.4ghz with an iChat name ready to go, I believe.
    I have a Granddaughter in Kansas with a new MacBook that I would like to set up with as well. I can think of so many possibilities with this new tool.
    Back to the the Uncle. He sent me an email address to connect with him, ... which I questioned.
    This is his latest message to me after I quizzed him about his current computer.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Harold
    We use a PC and our video connection is on Windows Live Messenger which uses e-mail address style contact details as listed below. Below is an internet link which has a download for Microsoft Live Messenger to run on Apple Mac. If you download and enter the address below as a contact we should be able to hook up?
    It would mean a great deal for the two seniors if we could make a live visit possible as neither are able to travel to different countries.
    I know our main guys for chatting are in the UK and one is listed in Scotland so maybe if you guys are available .....
    Harold
    Hi Harold,
    Welcome Back.
    I would tend to agree with Defcom on this.
    Trying to sort out any contact with iChat to MSN/Live Messenger and explaining all the limitations would detract from the people involved enjoyment.
    Also the other options of a Mac based and Video capable application would also take some explaining and have limits (no Audio)
    In this case Skype can be downloaded for PC and for Mac from the Links Defcom gave and requires little in the way of setting up.
    For purists reading this.
    1) iChat can talk to PCs if the PC is also using a AIM (AOL Instant Message Client) such AIM for PC or Trillian.
    2) There are Applications (effectively still in beta) that can at least Video (moving pics only) to MSN on a PC that can be downloaded for the Mac.
  • How can I video chat with someone who uses web based yahoo?
    Not long ago I purchased my first Mac (New MacBook Pro 2.53GHZ); last Summer I also purchased a MacBook Pro for my daughter. Everything works great (like driving a formula one Porsche after grappling with a battered pick-up truck (meaning Windows) for many decades; cannot imagine ever going back. But, there is one issue that I have not been able to solve and for which I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice. I am familiar with ichat and with AIM (my daughter uses it all the time). However, the vast majority of people with whom I communicate via IM live in parts of the world where very few people have even a computer at home much less residential internet access. As a result, near all of the folks I would be chatting with have to use public computers (internet cafes, libraries, etc) and obviously they cannot install AIM or anything else on those public computers. About 90% of them use the web based yahoo messenger which can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection (most of the rest use MSN). My question is this: I know how to do video chat in ichat but ichat does not support yahoo. How can I do video chat with someone who is using web based yahoo on a public computer that has a USB web cam? I was able to do this on my old PC which had a plug in web cam but do not know how it might work on a Mac. Should I install yahoo messenger on my MacBook Pro and will that work for me?. I know about some other Mac compatible chat clients such as Admiun but as far as I can tell none of them support video chat or in some cases yahoo. Perhaps I am overlooking something. I would be very grateful for any suggestions or advice in this matter. Thanks to anyone who reads this post and has any helpful info.
    Zurich,
    I don't think the web-based Yahoo Messenger supports video, so nothing you can do with that.
    http://messenger.yahoo.com/features/
    I think there are Mac compatible MSN clients that will do video, (i.e. aMSN) Also, Microsoft plans on releasing an updated version of Messenger for Mac soon.
    http://www.officeformac.com/blog/An-Update-on-Messenger-for-Mac
    GoogleTalk does have a browser based video chat, but your friends would need to install a browser plug-in. (which I would assume that can't do either)
    The best option is Skype, but also requires an install on their end (I would think that the internet cafes would/should have this available)
    Good Luck,
  • Video Chat with Macbook Pro and Macbook
    Hi,
    IM have a problem with video chatting with my macbook pro, all my internet connections are fine, my camera is fine, and so is my audio. I can start video chats with my friends who have regular laptops that have windows xp/vista over aim. I just cant seem to get it started with my cousin who has a macbook. Can any one please help me? I've been struggling for a long time.
    Thank You
    P.S. The error states that it was a communication error and that my cousin cancelled the connection(which she didnt).
    Denial of Service and Stateful Packet Inspection.
    As to where they are on your device is anybody's guess as different manufacturers put them in different places.
    Some like Netgear put them on the WAN page of the set up pages.
    Linksys includes them in the Firewall in a tab called Security
    Netopia included them as part of High and Medium settings of the firewall.
    Some have them in "Intrusion Detection"
    Some in a separate item in advanced.
    The list goes on.....
    If you tell us the device we may be able to pin it down further.
    It is late here and I may not read any more til tomorrow
  • Video chat with pc not working
    Ok, so I am trying to have a video chat with my friend. he is a pc person with aim 4.7 running. I am using iChat on my new iMac G5 with the built in iSight. When I send him an invite, he accepts it, and it just says that it is setting up the connection for ever. If he invites me, I say accept, and sometimes it says that I did not respond, and other times it says that there isn't sufficient bandwidth. I am on a very solid cable connection, and no file sharing or anything else is going on in the background. What should I do?
    I am having the same problem- I accept but says I did
    not respond?
    I'm having the same results described by James.
    Let me add more details.
    I have 1 Mac and 1 PC on the same WLAN. Both are connected to the Internet through a Netgear DG834G.
    I tested the connection between my Mac and appleu3test01 and it works fine.
    I did the same test between the PC with AIM 5.9.3861 and appleu3test01 and I have the same result as when I tried to setup a videocall between my Mac and the PC using Ichat and AIM 5.9.3861.
    In this case I receive the same error messages that James described.
    I tried to disable the personal firewall on the PC (Norton) but the results is the same AIM says:
    "Unable to complete the connection with your buddy. This may be due to the configuration of the firewall." ...but the FW is disabled.
    I disabled the FW on the Netgear just in case ... but no changes.
    It is really strange ... any suggestion?
    Thx,
    Flavio
  • IChat behind NAT can't video chat with AOL IM
    I've been trying to get iChat to video chat with AOL IM for a month, with intermittent success. iChat to the apple test accounts works perfectly, but with AOL IM it always says I didn't respond. I finally used a packet sniffer to debug the protocol communication, and found the problem.
    My problem is my mac is behind a NAT firewall. iChat doesn't properly detect my public IP address. When it negotiates the video chat with AOL IM, it gives the local, private IP address only useful behind the NAT, not the public IP the NAT uses. I can see it right there in the video chat request packet.
    Apparently, when talking iChat to iChat, the programs ignore the IP address given in the negotiation, using the source IP address of the packet instead, which avoids the NAT problem. AOL IM on the other hand, ignores the source IP of the packet, and believes the (incorrect) address in the request. So AOL's attempt to set up a video channel goes off into the weeds. Opening ports is irrelevant.
    The reason it works for me part of the time is, my NAT happens to implement the "DMZ" functionality by giving the computer inside the same IP address as the public IP address. So it works for me if and only if I put my mac in the DMZ. In that state, iChat gets the right IP, the one addressable from the outside world.
    The NAT firewall that works (provided I put the mac in the DMZ) is a 2wire homeportal 1800. I've also tried with a DLink DI-524. It doesn't do the IP address trick, so no luck at all with it.
    It would be great if iChat would use a trick like http://checkip.dyndns.org/ to get the real, external, public address of my computer, and use THAT to negotiate the video chat with AOL IM.
    Hi Jim,
    On devices that do not have UPnP then yes it is either Port Forwarding with all 29 ports if doing Jabber, Bonjour and AIM or Port Triggering with fewer entries if you have that.
    If you have either UPnP or Port Triggering then you can effectively keep DHCP as they allow multiple computers and the entries or turning it on in the case of UPnP do not point to a specific computer.
    Staic addresses are best with Port Forwarding as there is a possiblity that the IP address will change with DHCP.
    The pics on this site show only Port Forwarding.
    There are however several versions of this router and also variations as to numbers in different countries so in fact you may have UPnP. Firmware updates from Netgear may also give you UPnP.
  • Can't video chat with iChat 6.0.1 with Verizon Fios modem,MI424WR.
    Can't video chat with iChat 6.0.1 with Verizon Fios modem, MI424WR. Get error "Router type is Restricted, Port Restricted, Symmetric, or Unknown." How do I configure the router? I have allowed iChat incoming connections in my Mac (10.7.2) firewall. GChat and Skype work fine.
    Thanks
    Hi.
    You have to configure Port Forwarding on the Verizon FIOS Modem Router for iChat.
    http://support.actiontec.com/doc_files/MI424WR_Rev._G_User_Manual_30.16.0_v1.pdf
    Excerpt from pages 109 & 110:
    "To set up basic port forwarding:
    1. Click the arrow next to “IP Address forward to or select from menu” to display  a menu and either enter the IP address of the item to port forward from, or choose an item from the drop-down menu (choose your machine by host name, since the internal ip address changes from time to time, after the lease time expires).
    2. Click the arrow next to “Application to forward...” and select a pre-configured application from the drop-down menu (if iChat is not present in the list, you'll have to set up Advanced Port Forwarding).
    3. Click Apply. The new port forwarding rule appears in the “Applied rules” table at the bottom of the screen. "
    " To set up advanced port forwarding (custom ports):
    1. Click the arrow next to “Application to forward...” and select Custom Ports from the drop-down menu.
    Con
    2. Enter the host name (from the drop-down list) or local IP address of the computer providing the service in the “Specify IP” text box. Note that only one local network computer can be assigned to provide a specific service or application.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Select the Internet protocol to be provided from the “Protocol” drop-down list.  Depending on the protocol selected, additional options appear in the screen.
    5. Select the connection with which this port forwarding rule will be active from the “WAN Connection Type” drop-down list.
    6. To select a port to forward communications to (this is optional), select “Specify” from the “Forward to Port” drop-down list, then, in the text box that appears, enter the port number. If no port is identified, select “Same as
    Incoming Port.”
    7. If this port will be active all the time, select “Always” from the “Schedule” drop-down list. If the rule will only be active at certain times, select “User Defined” and click Add. Then, add a schedule rule (for more details about
    schedule rules, see the “Advanced Settings” chapter of this manual).
    8. If source and destination ports need to be specified, select Specify from the drop-down menu list (by clicking on the appropriate arrow), then entering the port numbers.
    9. Click Apply to save the changes. The new port forwarding rule appears in the “Applied rules” table at the bottom of the screen."
    Good Luck.
    Hi,
    Check the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth setting.
    iChat needs to see a Minimum of 128kbps to do 1-1 chats in Video
    For 3 and 4 way chats it needs 384kbps
    Set the Bandwidth to 500kbps if it is set lower.
    Also check the speed you are getting from your Internet supplier.
  • Can't share screen or video chat with AIM
    I'm trying to set up screen sharing and video chat with other AIM 'buddies' but the little icons for both remain greyed out when I select the buddy if the buddy is an AIM account. I also have messages configured for my GMail account. When I click on a GMAIL 'buddy' those icons switch from grey to active. So it looks like I can start a screen sharing/video chat session with GMail but not AIM folks. Any thoughts on what could be the problem? I've already deleted all iChat related preferences from my ~/Library/Preferences folder.  This system was an upgrade from Lion which had had iMessages beta on it.
    Thoughts? Thanks,
    -Noah
    Hi,
    Video Chat requires that you have a enough Internet Speed.
    A minimum of 128kbps upload (normally the lower) is required.
    However this is the Apple declared minimum and  a real world figure of 256kbps is best.  (it is several times the fastest possible Dial up speed).
    As Screen Sharing in iChat is basically an Audio Chat + then you have to be able to Video Chat (Same min speed requirement) first.
    Screen Sharing also requires a random internet port that means using UPnP in your router or Modem to Open ports.
    If the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy List are greyed out go to the Video Menu.
    Check the Video Chat Enabled is ticked and the same for Screen Sharing.
    If they are then open the Connection Doctor from the same Menu and check Capabilities.  (report these)
    Having said that the Internet Speed you have and the Settings would effect both types of Buddy list.
    That leaves the type of Applications the Buddy is using.
    Jabber (In this case GoogleTalk ) Buddy lists will not video or Audio chat to people logged in via a Browser or the Google Talk App for PCs or other Non iChat/Messages  but Jabber able apps on PCs or Macs (it is only iChat or Messages the Buddy has to have).
    An AIM Buddy could be logged in via AIM Express (Access via a Browser)
    This would tend to have them Not show the Video or Audio iCons (green ones in the Buddy list) rather than "disable" the Buddy List icons.
    Having laid it all out with some suggestions I am now confused.
    Go to the General Section of the Messages Preferences an untick the item about gathering all Accounts into one list.
    This will create at least two Buddy Lists (Jabber/Google and AIM).
    The settings in the Video menu should effect both Buddy lists.
    If you toggle Off and On again the Video, Audio and Screen Sharing options does anything change ?
    The Messages Beta issue will not be a factor.
  • Ichat no audio on video chat with snow leopard
    Hello,
    I am having an issue where there is only one way audio when doing a video chat with those using snow leopard. If I start the video chat, the other person can hear me and I cant hear them. If they start the chat I can then hear them but they can not hear me. This was not a problem prior to upgrading to snow leopard (both of us). I can video chat fine with those who have not upgraded to snow leopard.
    Audio chats alone work fine with these people.
    I have tried changing bandwidth settings in ichat on both ends, enable 32 bit mode, checked the sound preferences, etc and nothing helps. We are not running any third party apps that have been mentioned to interfere with ichat.
    I would greatly appreciate any suggestions..
    Thanks.
    Hi,
    Also cap iChat in iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps
    There is some evidence that it is the iChat Buffering.
    iChat tries to buffer the Video to match changes in the Internet Speed.
    Now that iChat 5 "sees" the whole of your Internet Connection (or your Buddies if they are on Snow Leopard) there can be bigger differences with a 1% slow down.
    There may also be a larger difference in what your Buddy can now stream to to you as iChat is Processor/Bandwidth dependant on how big and how many frames a sec are sent/Received. (your Buddy, or your to your Buddy, may well be able to overwhelm the other).
  • Why can I video chat with everyone on my list- Except for one person?
    Recently, my friend and I have been having problems video chatting with each other. A couple of months ago, we were able to screen share, voice chat, and video chat just fine. I can, and she can too, do all those things with all of our other iChat contacts. Except when we try to do anything with each other, it says "A problem has occurred with iChat". We've tried it multiple times on different computers, internet connections, etc., but it never seems to work. Is there a way that my friend and I can start to video chat and screen share again? This problem has just come out of the blue, and it is really bugging us.
    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
    Have either of you changed a Router at all ?
    I have some info dating back to iChat 3 listed here
    As time and iChat has progressed so has our understanding of NAT (Network Address Translation)
    In some cases the way the Device that does the routing at each end does NAT means you cannot get a video connection.
    If it was working and now doesn't it suggests something changed.
    As changing setting would more likely effect every Buddy at one end it looks more like a hardware issue (at least in terms of the devices functionality)
    Make, model and version numbers of any routers may help identify something specific.
    OK,
    The Actiontec by default may have had 192.168.2.1
    I say this because the common IP for a Linksys is 192.168.1.1
    +(I See I have had to re-read the first of these two posts and you have them the other way round - No problem May Bad - but read them the other way when you come across them below)+
    Start with looking on your Mum's System Preferences > Network > Built-in Ethernet > TCP tab.
    Other than the Drop Down saying "Using DHCP" it should look like this
    Link if Pic does not show
    Her number from the Actiontec is likely to be 192.168.2.(3) (in brackets is a guess)
    If it has all the details write them down.
    If we presume we are doing this for just this computer for the moment....
    You would use the "router" IP you find listed on your mum's computer as the access to the Actiontec. (192.168.2.1) +Just to Clarify in some places this will be referred to as the "Gateway" IP.+
    It is now simply a Question of accessing the Actiontec and turning off DHCP there.
    Then in the Pic above, change you mum's Drop down to read "Manually" like the pic shows.
    You then have to fill in all the details.
    *Next to the Linksys*
    Now in Practice this device has or uses two IPs - one to connect to the Actiontec and one for it's LAN side which includes the Wireless part.
    So when you go to it's Set up page it is on the same IP as the LAN (192.168.1.1)
    At this first page you with have a drop down similar to the MAc's System Preferences > Network (But it is not nice and kind and show you all the details.)
    If you change this drop down to Read "Static" then more boxes appear that you have to fill in.
    Like your mum's Mac they will be for the IP to use, the Subnet Mask, the DNS servers and the "Gateway" IP (which will be the Actiontec's IP
    See this Bigger Pic than before of the whole of the Front page of the Linksys set up. The top part of that page is what some devices call the WAN settings (outwards to the Internet), the lower part is the Linksys' LAN Settings (which in the Pic I also had set for Static Routing).
    I hope this makes it a little clearer (Despite me transposing the Linksys and Actiontec IPs). I have restated it again as I often find a slightly different explanation helps.
  • How to set Port Forwarding for video chat with AIM user?
    I'm trying to setup video chat between my Mac in the US (with iChat 3.1) and my friend's PC in Japan (with AIM). I need to know what ports needs to be forwarded on my friend's router, and/or on my router.
    Right now, when I attempt video chat with my friend (in Japan) at my home network, the invitation only works one way (me -> friend). And when I try to do it at work, it doesn't work at all.
    Help appreciated,
    Hi,
    I am also having a similar problem that perhaps others can help with.
    I'm using an iMac G5 with iChat here in the States, and am trying to connect to my parents' PC running AIM 5.5 on Windows XP sp2. To complicate matters, my parents have a Belkin wireless modem/router that they use to connect to the Internet.
    Currently, I can text chat with my parents, and send files to them via iChat. However, whenever I try to initiate a video chat, I get an error saying that "Phil Waymouth" (i.e. my computer) isn't responding.
    This is where we are at the moment:
    - Internal firewall on my G5 is turned off. I can port scan login.oscar.aol.com fine for both TCP and UDP.
    - XP firewall on my parent's computer is on, but has UPnP Framework (ports TCP 2869 and UDP 1900) set up as an exception.
    - I've gone through the stages on http://portforward.com to set up Port Forwarding on my parents' Belkin router. In addition, we've enable UPnP on the router and restarted it. However, if we use www.myip.dk to get the IP address of one of their computers, and attempt to port scan it, it fails.
    It feels like it's still either their router, or some ISP issue that's the problem?
    I apologise for re-hashing the same problem, but perhaps someone here will have a lightbulb moment!
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Phil
