Video chat with different versions of iChat?

Hi,
I was hoping to set up iChat to work with two different computers, one using iChat version 3.1.9 (v446) (OS = OSX 10.4.11) and the other using iChat version 5.0.1 (743) (OS = OSX 10.6.2) . Both users have Gmail email addresses, and we were hoping to use these for iChat.
The problem we are having now, is the earlier version of iChat only has two options for accounts, .mac or AOL instant Messenger. This computer is having trouble connecting.
Is there a way for us to set up these computers to allow for video chatting?
Thanks!

Hi,
iChat 3 does Jabber if you are NOT using Parental Controls on the Mac User account.
You can then enter an Google ID in the Jabber side.
What you then have to do before logging in is go to the iChat Preferences > Accounts > Server settings tab and change the Server name to talk.google.com (it will have pulled through the ending to your Google ID (either (@)googlemail.com or (@)gmail.com)

  • I recently installed Mavericks and now I can't video chat with sister who has ichat, is there a fix?

Is ichat on an older machine compatible with Mavericks Messages video chatting?  Is there something I can do to video chat with someone who has ichat on an older machine?  They aren't going to upgrade so am I stuck with Skype?  We really liked ichat.

Yes, I can video chat with someone on Skype.  I only ichat with my younger sister and she doesn't ichat with anyone else.  I don't have anyone else to try out the video chatting with in Messages.  She's not tech savy and doesn't feel comfortable doing anything to her program.  A friend may try to get her up and running on Skype, we just liked chatting with the Mac programs.

  • AIM with ichat 5.0.3 not working (can't chat, audio chat, or video chat) with someone who has ichat 6.0.0 (AIM). What can I do to fix this problem?

It was working the night before, but the next day wasn't working at all. Facetime was having problems too... I have Mac OSX 10.6.8.

    Hi,
It might help if we knew what sort of Accounts/Screen Names were involved ?
    What have you checked ?
    Mac Firewall ?
    Router ?
Logging on to your Mac with another Mac User ?
Does the Mac User Account you normally use have Parental Controls turned On ?

  • Can't video chat with buddy.

I have the most recent version of ichat and snow leopard, and I can't video chat with my Buddy on ichat/AIM. She has a PC (and has a camera) and whenever I try to video chat with her, it says waiting for a response, and then when she accepts it says she canceled the invitation or something else along those lines. When she tries inviting me it tells her that an error has occurred and she should restart AIM.
I tried restarting my ichat, and restarting my macbook, but it still says the same thing. She also has a PC laptop with a built in video camera, and AIM, and it lets me video chat with her on that (she doesn't like using that laptop because it's slow and the camera isn't that good), it also lets me video chat with other mac users. Please help me with this problem!!!!!! I have tried everything, but with no luck. Is it her PC or my mac? PLEASE HEELP!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Based on what you have posted it look like her PC.
Has she allowed AIM through the Windows Firewall as an Exception ?
Has she allowed it though her Router or modem ?

  • IChat behind NAT can't video chat with AOL IM

I've been trying to get iChat to video chat with AOL IM for a month, with intermittent success. iChat to the apple test accounts works perfectly, but with AOL IM it always says I didn't respond. I finally used a packet sniffer to debug the protocol communication, and found the problem.
My problem is my mac is behind a NAT firewall. iChat doesn't properly detect my public IP address. When it negotiates the video chat with AOL IM, it gives the local, private IP address only useful behind the NAT, not the public IP the NAT uses. I can see it right there in the video chat request packet.
Apparently, when talking iChat to iChat, the programs ignore the IP address given in the negotiation, using the source IP address of the packet instead, which avoids the NAT problem. AOL IM on the other hand, ignores the source IP of the packet, and believes the (incorrect) address in the request. So AOL's attempt to set up a video channel goes off into the weeds. Opening ports is irrelevant.
The reason it works for me part of the time is, my NAT happens to implement the "DMZ" functionality by giving the computer inside the same IP address as the public IP address. So it works for me if and only if I put my mac in the DMZ. In that state, iChat gets the right IP, the one addressable from the outside world.
The NAT firewall that works (provided I put the mac in the DMZ) is a 2wire homeportal 1800. I've also tried with a DLink DI-524. It doesn't do the IP address trick, so no luck at all with it.
It would be great if iChat would use a trick like http://checkip.dyndns.org/ to get the real, external, public address of my computer, and use THAT to negotiate the video chat with AOL IM.

    Hi Jim,
On devices that do not have UPnP then yes it is either Port Forwarding with all 29 ports if doing Jabber, Bonjour and AIM or Port Triggering with fewer entries if you have that.
If you have either UPnP or Port Triggering then you can effectively keep DHCP as they allow multiple computers and the entries or turning it on in the case of UPnP do not point to a specific computer.
Staic addresses are best with Port Forwarding as there is a possiblity that the IP address will change with DHCP.
The pics on this site show only Port Forwarding.
There are however several versions of this router and also variations as to numbers in different countries so in fact you may have UPnP. Firmware updates from Netgear may also give you UPnP.

  • Can iChat have video chat with Windows Messenger?

Is there any way to use Jabber or other means to establish a video chat with an MSN Messenger user?
Alternatively, does anyone know if Virtual PC for Mac supports video chat with windows computers?
    Thanks for the help.

    Hello Peter,
Is there any way to ... establish a video chat with an MSN Messenger user?
The best way is still with a Windows XP PC and MSN Messenger.
For use with your Mac, see the MSN, Yahoo, Win Messengers & iChat? FAQ. Jabber is text only.
There is a beta application called Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X that is an MSN Server client.
However, please note that the Mercury Messenger Webcam / Video Conference Support section, which I quote, in part, includes the following:
Video-conferencing is supported on Mac OS X, however it is receive-only, due to an incomplete JMF library for Mac OS X. The feature is still relatively new, and so some issues may occur in use.
Although Mercury Messenger (beta) will connect to the MSN Server, those comparing it with iChat AV's capability should certainly study the sections about the limitations and known issues.
If you get Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X working, please post back and let us know what you think of it.
... does anyone know if Virtual PC for Mac supports video chat with windows computers?
VPC for Mac does not support Firewire video, so it cannot use an iSight for video. Sorry, but I have not seen anyone post a method of using VPC that rivals the performance of using the same application on a Windows PC.
Also, VPC with the current version of Windows is so expensive that, at least where I live, it is often cheaper to buy a used, and sometimes a new, PC to run your PC software.
If you really MUST use PC software, I suggest running it on a PC.

  • IChat Video chat with AIM Buddy - Possible fix?

This is my first post to the Apple Discussions group. I received my MacBook Pro, my first ever Apple computer, just two days ago, and came upon this group after discovering the problems establishing a video chat with someone using AIM. With the help of "Rjin WI" I was able to verify that I could indeed have video chat Mac-to-Mac. This morning I decided to try something I should have tried on day one-I fired up AIM 5.9 on my PC, and tried to chat with myself.
I disabled all firewalls involved: the Mac firewall, the Windows SP2 firewall, and the SPI firewall on my Linksys router. I chatted with myself between two screen name for a few moments before initialising the video chat from the Mac, but was quite shocked to see on the PC "Unable to complete the connection with your buddy. This may be due to the configuration of the firewall." On the Mac was "Failed to start Video Chat because: (I) did not respond."
I tried a few more times just to be sure, but the error message was persistent. I kept looking for some button to press or question to answer in the invitation, but there was nothing to be found. Except for the "video" button in the AIM chat I had previously overlooked. I initialised the video chat from AIM, and what do you know, I received the invitation on the Mac, accepted, and was connected just fine.
I reenabled all of the firewalls again. And once again, I was able to have a video chat with myself when I sent the invitation from the PC. Trying from the Mac instantly gave me the error on the PC, and after timing out, the same error on the Mac.
Does anyone else have anything they can add to the mystery of iChat?

    Jason-
great post. i'll try and make my situation short and sweet, as I don't have the energy to try and describe every little "error" that my computer runs into. To make it short; just got the brand new macbook (thinking 'now i can actually video chat, unlike the isight which never worked and solutions/helpful advice via appletechs seemed to be non-existent). Low and behold the camera works perfectly...2x. At the time I was using airport for wireless connection, but I have since been using the computer with a linksys. Because the computer worked with the airport and not with the linksys, I thought this was were the problem existed...then the camera worked with a different user (with the linksys) so I scratched that idea. Anyways I have been trying to video chat with another macbook and there is no success whatsoever. We both get the msg " did not respond) when the user accepts, the camera icon goes "shaded" but then goes back to its normal state. Both firewalls were disabled, and both of us are using linksys. I also run vonage in my place if that could somehow play into this scenario. I apologize for such a poor post, but my energy regarding this matter is limited since I am so tired of trying get this video chat working. (first a worthless isight, then a macbook which can't even function with another macbook. in addition, to put it lightly, i am very dissatisfied with applecare regarding this issue.)

  • IChat can't video chat with AIM user

My mother in law has switched from PC to iMac, and wants to video chat with her grandchildren. They are on a PC, and have installed AIM 5.9. Can IM fine, but as soon as we try to hook up a video chat, it fails to connect, saying:
There was a communication error during your chat. iChat encountered errors while communicating with participants in this chat. You can send details etc etc...
    Firewall is off in OSX
    Any ideas?

  • Can't Video Chat with iChat and AIM for PC

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and I'm using iChat (obviously). I've tried many times to have a One-Way Video chat with my friend who is using Windows XP and the newest version of AIM for Windows. When we connect to the video chat I can see myself but on his end he only sees a black screen, he is unable to see me. Help??

    Hi,
You could try Limiting the Bandwidth (ichat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit) to 500kbps. (Possibly try 200kbps as well)
If the latest version of AIM on PC includes the "Real Time" Option, it should turned Off. (It is a feature to send Text as you type but effects the Video end as well).
Also read through this Users Tip http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
There is no guarantee of success I am afraid, despite both apps supposedly being compatible.

  • HT1771 why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies

why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies!!!

    HI,
    Apple did not erase iChat.
Messages in Mountain Lion is iChat +
The plus bit is the fact you can iMessage iOS devices.
All the other features that were in iChat are still there.
If you upgraded Lion to get to Mountain Lion then in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you probably list all the iChat Accounts (Screen Names and IDs).
You may need to enable them for Messages.
They should also show up in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts
Once those accounts (AIM and Jabber) are Enabled they can be viewed in a Combined Buddy List
Windows Menu > Buddies (Or using CMD + 1 Keystrokes)
In the General Section of the Preferences you can Unlink these Buddy lists.
The Green icons or highlight a Buddy and then using the Buddies Menu or the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy list can be used the same way to start Video or Audio Only chats.
The iMessage "Account" is only for texting iOS devices or other people using their Apple ID on a Mac in Messages.
It is an account "in addition to" rather than "taking over from" the services that iChat can join.

I have Messages on OS X 10.8 but my friend has iChat still so i made an AIM account to chat with her. This worked. But now i can't video chat with her. We can both send invites to video chat but the other person cannot accept/see them. All that happens is the camera turns on...

    HI,
All the Google IDs I know that work are in the form of [email protected] of [email protected]
Both these types are Google Mail IDs
I know of other names that look like [email protected] bit these are not Mail Accounts and do not work with the Google Talk servers (talk.google.com as seen in iChat Preferences > Accounts > Server settings for a gmail account name)
A random set of character sand numbers and that ending sound more like a Google Chat room rather than his ID.

    Hi.
You have to configure Port Forwarding on the Verizon FIOS Modem Router for iChat.
    http://support.actiontec.com/doc_files/MI424WR_Rev._G_User_Manual_30.16.0_v1.pdf
    Excerpt from pages 109 & 110:

    2. Enter the host name (from the drop-down list) or local IP address of the computer providing the service in the “Specify IP” text box. Note that only one local network computer can be assigned to provide a specific service or application.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Select the Internet protocol to be provided from the “Protocol” drop-down list.  Depending on the protocol selected, additional options appear in the screen.
    5. Select the connection with which this port forwarding rule will be active from the “WAN Connection Type” drop-down list.
    6. To select a port to forward communications to (this is optional), select “Specify” from the “Forward to Port” drop-down list, then, in the text box that appears, enter the port number. If no port is identified, select “Same as
    Incoming Port.”
    7. If this port will be active all the time, select “Always” from the “Schedule” drop-down list. If the rule will only be active at certain times, select “User Defined” and click Add. Then, add a schedule rule (for more details about
schedule rules, see the “Advanced Settings” chapter of this manual).
    8. If source and destination ports need to be specified, select Specify from the drop-down menu list (by clicking on the appropriate arrow), then entering the port numbers.
    9. Click Apply to save the changes. The new port forwarding rule appears in the “Applied rules” table at the bottom of the screen."

    Hi,
Check the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth setting.
iChat needs to see a Minimum of 128kbps to do 1-1 chats in Video
For 3 and 4 way chats it needs 384kbps
Set the Bandwidth to 500kbps if it is set lower.
Also check the speed you are getting from your Internet supplier.

  • Can video chat with Aim users on a PC but not with Ichat users on Mac!

    Hello
I am having the odd problem of being able to video chat with someone when they are using their pc running aim, but I cant chat with the same person when he on his Mac!
I am running as DMZ behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.
The problem is on my side because I cant chat with the test accounts either.
I tried this after bothe forwarding and triggering all the ports that were suggested.
    I am stumped!

    Hi Lullah,
This is going to be down to the Staelite connection.
It has what is called latency.
This adds an unexceptable delay in the passing of data at the start of the connection.
Very few people have reported success.
The things you can try are to fool the link into passing more intense data prior to starting a chat.
If you have web pages try uploading a Pic of larger file to the site.
Just as this finishes start up iChat
You should also check that System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab has the speed to match you download set.
Hopefully (But no reported success) you may get iChat to see more bandwidth as you have just had the modem busy.
Following the launch of iChat with a video chat request may be able to get that bandwidth.
Realistically the 128 k upload even if you were getting close to it is very tight to the lowest point Apple say will work.
Speed testing a 128 k service i likely to get a result of about 80% of the figure (102k) iChat will use about 80 % of what is left (you are down to about 83K). You are now below the 100k min.
With regards to your LAN there are several things that may help if not set up already.
Only have one device doing DHCP. The way routers work as compared to modems is that they pass all routing data though to the computers.
This means the computers can be sitting in two subnets (1) from Modem to computer via router and (2) from Router. The computer can only display one of these IP addresses but can get confuse info regarding iChat.
Do not use Port Forwarding or Port triggering, twice or together on the LAN. iCHAT does not like two lots of NAT (bath are forms of Network Address Translation [NAT]).
    Use UPnP where you can.
IF you are trying to test this yur Mac to your PC you ahve to allow for the fact that the modem is handling two Video chats in effect. This means you need twice the minimum bandwidth (let alone the fact that ichat to AIM semms to like 50% more than Mac to Mac contacts.
Sorry to be the bearer of so much doom and gloom.

  • Ichat no audio on video chat with snow leopard

    Hello,
I am having an issue where there is only one way audio when doing a video chat with those using snow leopard. If I start the video chat, the other person can hear me and I cant hear them. If they start the chat I can then hear them but they can not hear me. This was not a problem prior to upgrading to snow leopard (both of us). I can video chat fine with those who have not upgraded to snow leopard.
Audio chats alone work fine with these people.
I have tried changing bandwidth settings in ichat on both ends, enable 32 bit mode, checked the sound preferences, etc and nothing helps. We are not running any third party apps that have been mentioned to interfere with ichat.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions..
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Also cap iChat in iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps
There is some evidence that it is the iChat Buffering.
iChat tries to buffer the Video to match changes in the Internet Speed.
Now that iChat 5 "sees" the whole of your Internet Connection (or your Buddies if they are on Snow Leopard) there can be bigger differences with a 1% slow down.
There may also be a larger difference in what your Buddy can now stream to to you as iChat is Processor/Bandwidth dependant on how big and how many frames a sec are sent/Received. (your Buddy, or your to your Buddy, may well be able to overwhelm the other).
