Video clips import but don't play

I import my avi video clips taken from my canon camera to imovie by makin them a .mov file though once i get them into imovie they just become a single picture, not a movie clip.
I want to make some still clips from these movie clips...anyway ideas?

How do you do that?
AVI is just a container that can contain video in any form. What's inside the AVI? MPEG-1? MPEG-4? Motion JPEG?

I have just changed over from a computer that was 11 years old, running Windows 98, to a new computer running Windows XP. With my old computer I could easily download video clips, they would open and play as soon as the download had ended. Now I have to click on the download box and click on "Play". Also, when I wanted to keep a clip, I just right clicked and a menu appeared and I would then click on "Save as" or similar. Now there doesn't appear to be any way to save the clips. Apart from a faster and more powerful computer I feel I've gone backwards. Can anyone help?

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

Video clips imported from an iPhone into iMovie ver 6 are rotated 90 degrees; how can I fix this or avoid it?

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

  • Pre Lion iPhone videos show Thumbnail but can't play - new video generates Unsupported Video Format popup, no thumb but will play via quicktime

    This is really frustrating -
Over the last year I have been uploading all of my photos and occasional iPhone video to Aperture 3 (latest version all patches in place).    Aperture would recognize the video, create a thumbnale and otherwise treat it nicely.
Now, since upgrading to Lion I find that though I can "see" the old videos in their folders or projects and the associated Thunbnale, I can't play them - I either get the spinning color wheel and then nothing or Aperture will crash and report an error relating to Quicktime (sorry don't have an error code at the moment).
If I try and export a video I can - but what I get also can't be played by Quicktime - just a black screen.  When I hit Play - the scroll bar moves, but there is no sound or video.
From Final Cut Pro X, I can imoprt this exported video file and see that it appears complete - but FCPX uses it's own playback elements.
If I shoot a new video on my iPhone, I find that I can see the thumbnale in the import option of Aperture when looking at the phone, but once imported I get a Popup telling me that it is an "Unsupported Video Format" - "Do you want to open this video clip with QuickTIme Player?"   If I hit Open then the clip does play, but the thumbnale remains a black square with the warning Exclamation Point.
I have also had some issues with Lion Mail crashing when trying to play a video made on an iPhone and sent to me via email.   Seems more likley to be a Lion / Quicktime issue then an Aperture and Mail issue - but who knows.
I spent 2.5 hours of quality time with the Genius bar this morning.  We reinstalled Lion and after that the suggestion was to trash and re-install Aperture, but that would require my disc and of coruse a trip home.   Mail doesn't seem to still have the issues with iPhone movies that it had - but Aperture is still not happy.
Did as instructed and dragged Aperture 3 to the trash, did the empty trash option, restarted and reinstalled.   Then did a software update to catch the new update for Aperture and it found that.   Interestingly when I did start it up after that it DID NOT ask me for my key - so clearly some elements were left over.
Now upon retstarting Aperture 3 once again I find that I can still see my old movies (their thumbnails show up) but I still can't play them.   The new test movie is there but still generates the popup regarding it being an Unsupported Video Format.
And it's not just my iPhone.   Video sent via email from another iPhone can play as an attachment, or when dragged and dropped to the desktop, but once imported into Aperture is once again proclaimed to be an Unsupported Video Format.
Hoping someone out there knows how to resolve this....

For some reason it just started to work now. Have no idea what didn't work before.

  • Imported Images don't play correctly

I have 30 individual images (.bmp files) but when I import them to the timeline and press play, iMovie's timeline plays through each image so slowly. The whole 30 images should play less than a second long. It's like each image is treated like a separate movie in iMovie.
Can't I just import the images and play them quickly?
Also, when I save the images as a .mov (Quicktime) file from another application the .mov file is 266k to max of 1.2 MB, but iMovie's exported .mov is 8.4 mb at the smallest. What's up with that. This application seems like it's a waste of money at this point.

iMovie is a video edit app
    not a "claymation maker"
apple-i-click on imported still: 5sec length (or whatever you set in prefs)
you can change that by hand
    you can edit each "clip"
iM handles stills as clips because it is a video edit app (said that?)
so, you can add charming KB effects or transitions or...
    sizes:
what compressor do you choose for export from QT or iM? depending on settings (size, re, fps, codec), 1 min can go from a few kB up to a few hundred MB.... it depends on what YOU decide, that Mac shall do...
This application seems like it's a waste of money at this point.
don't read the manuals/included help files/turtorials at Apple.com, just erase it by dragging it into trash can. every thought of buying a PC/windows machine?

  • AVI imported files don't  play correctly

I have some AVI files I have been using with Premiere Pro 2, and they worked OK with it. E.g. MPEG-4.
Now I am importing these AVI clips to Premiere Pro CS4 and they don't play correctly in it. The video runs very quickly, while the sound plays normally.
Interesting enough, there are some other AVI files that have the same specifications that work OK with Premiere Pro CS4.
How can I fix Premiere Pro CS4 to import correctly all my AVI files?

Ok think about you are a director from the news-television. A car drove in a supermarket and the only man who filmed that was a "little consumer man" with a "little consumer camera" named Ixus 500 which takes mjpeg films. What are you doing? Do you say, sorry boss we can't handle the film!?
Premiere have to work with non profi material as well because of the fact that it could be needful.
In the fact that Premiere could handle this file without any errors when I install the reported codec, I think there must be a mistake by Premiere of choosen the right codec for this film. I have a mjpeg codec installed in my system. I think this one is used by Windows-Mediaplayer, Moviemaker. At this time I think Premiere use a different codec. It took the wrong option! After I install the reported mjpeg codec from "Morgan" Premiere think that it is the best to use this codec. And so the film plays correctly.
You can have many codecs installed at same time which are all used for the same video-format. The program which will play this movie has to do the right choice of which codec it will use to decode the movie. A help for this programms is the "Merit" of the codec which describes the priority of a codec. Higher Merit means use this codec first. You can see an example in the picture above.
    http://www.abload.de/img/screenshot.2occ6.jpeg
First mjpeg codec is the standard windows codec. Second is my installed Morgan mjpeg codec. However without the Morgan codec Premiere should use the first one. I don't know why but I think without the Morgan installed, Premiere use a third codec which plays the movie wrong.

  • A video clip import for a new project keeps showing up as a clip from an older project.

So here's the issue, I succesfully imported and trimmed 95% of the video clips from my GoPro today. However, when I upload the piece de resistance, it shows up as a clip from an older project that I've already deleted. Despite showing me the older clip in the imported section, I can still play approximately 1/3 of the actual, new clip. Problem is it stops and doesn't allow me to work with the remaining footage. I've tried importing it straight from the SD card, copying it to the desktop first, etc. No luck. Any advice?

    So, it's Photoshop CS3.
Anyway, from what I understood, you open the photo directly form the disk in Photoshop. That is, you don't use Lightroom to open the photo in Photoshop. It just doesn't work this way. As I said above, Lightroom has no way of knowing when to import a photo that has been saved in Photoshop.
If you insist on using Jpegs for derivative files, your best way to go is indeed using Synchronize.
However, I'd advice to use a lossless format, like TIFF or PSD. Why leave image quality on the table (as Jeff Schewe likes to say)? Storage is cheap and you're editing only your best photos in Photoshop anyway.
And as an additional benefit, you can automate the process of importing derivatives:
Configure what file type to use in Prefs: TIFF or PSD, bit depth, color space etc.
Select an image in Lightroom and hit Ctrl+E.
The derivative file is created in the chosen format and opened in Photoshop.
    Edit and save in Photoshop.
Voila! Your edited derivative is already in Lightroom.

  • AVCHD .mts files imported but optimised files play fast in QT and FCPX 10.1.1

    Hi Guys
Panasonic HC-V700 AVCHD .MTS files (from within the 'Stream' folder) imported and optimised into FCPX 10.1.1 but the imported/optimised clips (found in the Transcoded Media>High Quality Media folder) play too fast in QT and FCPX 10.1.1 . Was able to do this fine until yesterday.
Using OSX 10.9.1 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with just 4GB RAM (hoping to get faster, souped-up new iMac very soon).
When playing the 1080/50p clips on the camera's video player they play at normal speed. Weirdly, today, FCPX has 'acknowledged' the camera on the import window despite the 1080/50p footage (previously it didn't show the camera as a valid import 'archive' on the import screen). Now, on the import window whenever I play a clip it also plays too quick.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Warm regards
    Peter

When attempting to play the .MTS files in import I'm getting the 'dropped frames' error message:
"Issues that may affect playback include available memory, disk speed, graphics performance, and processor performance.
You may be able to get better performance by doing the following:
    - Use proxy playback by changing the Media setting to 'Proxy' in the Viewer Options pop-up menu. (Requires proxy media.)
    - Optimize your source clip media."
Could the lack of RAM in this iMac actually cause the video to speed up in FCPX? (weird)

  • QT audio and video clips on web site not playing

    Hello,
I recently did a clean new install of Leopard 10.5.8 and since then there is a site I used to go on that played QT video and audio clips just fine, but now, although the QT symbols are present, neither the audio or the video clips operate.
The clips used to just load on the site automatically and they would operate when I clicked on PLAY before I did the new install.
I've downloaded the latest QT Player, Version 7.6.2 (518).
Here is a sample page, it's a Japanese language learning site - when I open this site I can only see the QT symbols where the video and audio clips usually load - but you will probably see the actual clips load just fine if your system is working OK.
    http://www.dartmouth.edu/~kanji/kanji0301.html
It's a great site when the clips are working but it's not so useful when they don't.
I've written to the site's webmaster - they don't reply - tho' I don't think it's anything wrong with the site since it only went wrong after I did a new OSX install, I think there's a switch somewhere on my system that needs activating.
Can anyone help me get these clips working?
    Thnx a lot.
    Ann

You going to some how get in contact with the site's webmaster. I know you said you tried but the webmaster can only answer your question about the Qt videos. I tried to load the URL for the video into the Quicktime Player and all I get is ... The URL is not valid alert box. I even tried it in Firefox, didn't work.
It the site that's having problems and not something on your part. Installing your OS didn't cause this...

  • How can I stop iMovie Crashing on video clip import

I have only been using iMovie a short time period. Most recently it started to crash every time I tried to manually import a video clip. I've reported it to Apple several times over the past 48 hours. Sometimes I'm just getting ready to import a clip when it crashes. Very frustrating! Here I am a recent Windows convert but I'm about to return to windows just to produce movies (even Windows crashed, but much less). Any thoughts on how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

If you don't get an answer here, you may want to post in the iMovie discussion here.

  • Recorded videos on iPhone 4S don't play back properly on PC

I've been trying for about two weeks to get videos I record on my new iPhone 4S (iOS 6) to play back properly on my computer running Windows XP.
Most recently I installed Filmic Pro 2. One of the reasons was to be able to record the videos in lower resolution, hoping maybe the reduced file size would help the files to behave properly on my computer.
The video files I just recorded and transfered to my PC using DiskAid (in MOV format) play back perfectly in VLC Media Player, but when I play them using QuickTime there is just a black screen with audio. The same thing happens when I import them as clips in Camtasia Studio - only a black screen with audio when playing back the timeline. These videos are 1280x720 and range from 97 MB (about 1 minute) to 430 MB (about 5 minutes) in length.
Regarding DiskAid, the previous version I had installed started crashing every time I ran it with my phone connected - it would crash as soon as it began loading the camera roll. I just installed the latest DiskAid update, and this version successfully copies videos from the camera roll to my computer without crashing. But there is the black screen problem with these videos.
Does anyone have experience with this problem or suggestions that might help?
    Thanks!

  • Emailed a video clip, however no sound is played once it's downloaded...

I emailed a friend a video clip, however when she attempts to play it there is no sound. The video comes through fine, but she can't hear anything. I emailed the clip to myself wondering if it would also not play sound--but the sound does come through on my PC. Is there an issue on her PC that's preventing her from hearing the sound? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

but the problem isn't being able to open the clip
Yes, I'm aware of that. Movie Inspector will show (among other things) what encodings are used for the audio and video. That information could identify potential causes of the trouble (or at least rule out potential causes of the trouble) on her PC.

  • COMPRESSOR 4 - Dragging video clips over but most Jobs dont appear

I was using compressor 4 for a few hours for the 1st time on my new macbook pro and suddenly now when I drag video clips to create jobs (any number of clips greater then 1 or 2)  only the 1st 2 will show in the job window.  The job count text on lower left corner usually shows correct amount but when I try to submit jobs I get error say, "one or several jobs do not have a target"  but the listed jobs are ready to go?
Also I noticed even when things appeared to work properly, compressor would give me beach balls if I click on various things.
    Tried reinstallation but no go.

    Thanks for your reply.
I am running Decklink drivers 4.8.1r2, & the latest ATTO drivers with the Medea set up as MacOS Extended format. I have one question though, with regard to the PCI slots in the machine, which is slot 4? do they number from the top or from the bottom? Currently I have the ATTO card in the top slot with the Decklink Pro in the slot below, nothing in the slot below that and the stock video card in the slot at the bottom. I've heard something about needing to put the ATTO card in the one slot that is 133Mhz PCI express and beware of putting anything else in an adjacent slot due to the resulting sharing of the bandwidth or "down clocking" of the bus to the speed of the lowest rated card (being the Decklink I imagine, not being PCI Express)??
Considering the problems we have been having, we are looking at upgrading to MacOS 10.4 and FCP 5 in the immediate future, wise move or not?
    Thanks again,
    -Matt.
