Video Codec

I'm attempting to create a sports 'highlight DVD'. I've converted some old video from VHS to digital format using my Canopus ADVC-100 converter and all is fine.
I now need to obtain other video that has already been recorded to DVD-R's by a friend of mine who no longer has the original DV tapes. Is there an easy way to retrieve the footage needed from the DVD's?? I've been able to do it using software (MactheRipper) but that creates files with .VOB extensions with FCE apparently doesn't import/read. I've tried converting the .VOB files to .MOV files using ffMpegX. The resulting .MOV files, when imported into FCE, appear to have wavy lines thru it and isn't clear when played in the Canvas. When played in the Viewer, it's very choppy. Is it because of the type of file or is this just the way FCE displays the video.
What codec does FCE use when converting video from a DV converter? How come the converted files do not have an extension (at least one that I can find)?
Should I be converting to something other than .MOV files in ffMpegX?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I'd suggest hooking up a DV camera to the DVD player and making a copy to DV tape. Then use the camera to capture to FCE in the usual way. You will have timecode, compatability and a back up. Use the S-VHS connections if possible to maximize quality.

  • Unable to export Quicktime after upgrade from Premiere 7.0 to 8.0 (2014) error "incompatible video codec in preset"

In the previous version of Premiere Pro (downloaded two months ago) I was able to export QuickTime files with preset HD 720p H.264.  It was very easy to do this in the previous version.
Upgraded to Premiere Pro 8.0 (2014), no when I attempt to export the same project with the same settings I see error message "incompatible video codec found in the preset. present load failed"
When I select Quicktime, the default preset appears as NTSC DV Widescreen 24p.   Attempted to export with this setting, result is a file that plays audio but no video.
System is Windows, tried two different computers, including one with Windows 8, same result. Tried Media Encoder, same result.
I searched the forums for an answer, the new features page lists these presets as available however they are not working for me.  Nothing else was changed on the computer, only the upgrade to Premiere 8.0 (2014)
How can I export Quicktime files in the new Premiere Pro?

Tech support helped me solve the issue - uninstall QuickTime and reinstall the newer version of QuickTime

  • Media Encoder CS6 Avid DNxHD video codec settings do not update in video settings tab

I want to encode a file to Avid DNxHD, but I am unable to change the resolution in the codec settings. I am choosing Avid DNxHD codec within the video codec tab, then clicking on codec settings and choosing a resolution from the resolutions pulldown menu. It will let me choose different resolutions from that menu, but after I hit okay, it has no effect on changing the video settings the way it's supposed to. For instance, if I try to encode a file that is 1280x720 with a source frame rate of 23.98, and I choose 1080i/59.94 DNxHD 145 8-bit, the frame size and frame rate does not change in the video settings tab. I am running Media Encoder CS6.0.2 on a Mac with OS 10.8.4. I am using Avid quicktime codecs v.2.3.7, because my system is running Avid Symphony 6.0.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No one ever responded unfortunately and I never figured out a work around.
In Media Encoder CC there is a system preset for DNxHD MXF which I've used
to yield Avid files. The weird thing is that the CC version does the exact
same thing as the CS6 if you choose quicktime, DNxHD codec, and try to
change the codec settings. None of the settings update. If you find out
anything more about this I'd appreciate getting an update. Thanks!

  • Component video codec

okay awhile back i asked about why the quality setting couldn't be adjusted for the component video codec...not truly answered though i appreciate dick napoli for jumping in...anyway now it's just gone! no component video codec at all. anything else missing??? isn't there a file for what has been changed or fixed in each update? where is that at?

Many older codecs have been placed in "legacy" status in QuickTime Pro exports and the Player playback preferences. Some for security issues that are real threats and others because Apple is trying to discourage their use to maintain future compatibility with some of these ancient codecs.
Open the QuickTime Control Panel / Advanced tab and check the box to "show legacy encoders".

    HELLO EVERYONE,
Yesterday Tuesday October 14, 2014 I successfully installed Firefox 33. I noticed a new plug-in called "OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems, Inc. 1.1"
I wanted to know the following:
    1. Where in my Computer or Firefox profile is this plug-in located?
    2. Can I uninstall this plug-in??

    Hello,
Type ''about:plugins'' in the address bar and press Enter. Note the path listed under the plug-in.

  • What video codecs other than "avc1" will show .mp4 as a TV program?

What video codecs other than "avc1" will show .mp4 as a TV program in iTunes?
Some of my TV shows have the video codec "mp4v" and show only as movies in iTunes.
My Philips portable DVD player will play .mp4's with video codec "mp4v" but not "avc1".
I'd like to save only one format of the files. Is there a conversion or update that will allow iTunes to identify the "mp4v" as a TV show?

  • Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required video codec is not installed on your computer

I can not find solution to the issue "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required video codec is not installed on your computer" while attempting to play the file with *.wmv extension. Some computer fail in spite of said missing codec
being present according the windrows media player in Windows 7 box

If Rashid's link does not resolve it... consider the below:
    A)  As of this writing, the codec for GoToMeeting webinar recordings ("G2M4" codec) was only mentioned in *one* web page, of about 10 Microsoft web pages I read, to resolve this problem (and that codec is not included, yet, in their diagnostic tool),
so if you're trying to play a GoToMeeting webinar, simply get the codec for it from their site:  http://www.GoToMeeting.com/codec
    B)  If Windows Media Player (WMP) will not even open the file, you won't be able to get the 4-character codec's name (like "G2M4") from WMP.  But VLC's media player will tell you that code, even when it fails to run the video.... and then you can
    search the internet for it.
    C)  The problem sometimes is not actually a missing codec.  Other things that have helped others, some from:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/the-windows-media-player-12-could-not-play-the-wma/bb823460-44df-4e8d-ba2c-42ec0e111e5a?page=3
    (1) running the System File Checker (SFC.exe),
    (2) opening WMP first (running both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions) then opening the file from inside them,
    (3) confirming that WMP was the file association for WMV files,
    (4) Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound, selecting my audio device, and looking for a "5.1" setting (I didn't have one), to change to "stereo",
    (5) checking Tools\Options\Devices\Speakers\Properties\Speaker Properties\AdvancedPlayback\ Speakers /HP\Properties\Advanced\Default Format, to select "CD or DVD Quality" (if that setting appears for your device),

  • Satellite A80: How to restore audio and video codecs?

How can I restore the audio and video codecs which are installed by default on my Satellite A80 with XP Home edition?
I removed them in safe mode because of a problem with the Pinnacle Codec installed by Pinnacle Studio 10.
Now I need to set the standard audio en video codecs back.
I already downloaded the codec package from Microsoft Mediaplayer and have sound en video again in Media Player.
Unfortunately I still don't have sound in Toshiba Diagnose Program when testing Midi and Wave sound.
System restore came up with the message that restore was not possible because no changes had been made.

Have investigated in the forum and found this different codecs:
    -Zsunami Filter Pack: (3.9.9)
    - Nimo Codec Pack: (5.0 Final)
    - ACE Mega CoDeC Pack: (5.93)
    - Codec Pack Elisoft: (13.505)
    - K-Lite Codec Pack: (2.2) Full
    - SLD Codec Pack: (1.5 Pro)
    - All in One: (5.0.6.1)
    - The Codecs: (1.1 full)
Well, if the system restore does't work try to install one or several codecs from this list.

  • Re user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? - I've followed instructions so far so good, until I get to "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?

Re AppleMan 1958 excellent user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? -
I've followed instructions with success until  "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?
I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed.  (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac)  Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app.  It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one.  Streamclip played the video with the sound.  so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?

  • Premiere Pro Update 7.2.1 has lost Video Codec

When I'm Exporting a video the option for Video Codec Tap under the Export Settings has been removed with the new Update, on the 19th December 2013. Can anyone help tell me how I can export my video as a 1080p ProRes 422 (HQ).
    Thanks

for all interested - i solved the problem.
after a few tryouts the system kept spitting out this error: "Adobe QT32server.exe The program can't start becaue MSVCP80.dll is missing"
this got solved by reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4.
with the error message gone nothing really changed - premiere pro CC insisted on not reading prores files while still reading dnxhd files from the black magic cinema camera.
i reinstalled the whole CC suite - same situation.
last but ot least i tried to uninstall anything with an apple logo on it - just to find out that you can not remove all of the components entirely without using 3rd party tools.
after that i reinstalled the prores decoder 1.0 along with the latest quicktime version (7.7.5).
    voilá.

  • Multi-clip with different video codecs. Can it be done?

Is it possible to create a multi-clip when using different video codec (i.e. HDV 1080i50 & HDV 1080p25)?
    Thanks.

Nope. Convert one to match the other using Compressor. Or better yet, convert them both to matching ProRes 422 files.

  • What is the fastest video codec to render in premiere?

I'm looking/curious for the type of video codec that premiere renders fastest. Is it, h.264, .mov, .avi, etc...??
I export alot from After FX and i need to cut down on premiere rendering time, so i want to export the video that will render fast through premiere.
My computer is too slow to do dynamic link.
What type of video does premiere render that fastest?

Your Project setting is usually "native".  eg P2 mxf, HDV, DV etc... f it matches your source.
ie. match your project to your source and then you are basically "native"
If you import a file of the same type...you are native.
Rendering depends on hardware, effects etc....
CS5 and MPE now provides a realtime edit experience in the timeline without rendering previews (for many fx.)
All exports to a final movie  require "Rendering".  The speed of that depends on the hardware and effects etc but the quickest is usually if you are rendering a movie that matches your Project.
BTW: you need to think about what the final use of the movie is.  That determines what you will export.  It may not be the fastest.

  • Incompatible video codec found in the preset

Hello, First post so apologies if I am in the wrong section.
I am trying to export a sequence from premier pro through the media encoder.
for my project I am required to produce a 720p, 25fps h.264 .mov  however when selecting the format "Quicktime"  there is no drop down in the codec options to allow for H.264 compression.
Under format I have attempted selecting a preset that matches the above settings but I receive the error message
"incompatible video codec found in the preset"
I am using a new laptop (around 2 weeks old) on the windows 7 os
    Thanks for your help!

Do you have QuickTime Player installed on your machine?  If not, please install it from Apple - QuickTime - Download and watch videos, movies, and shows.

  • UT Video Codec settings for AVCHD .mts transcoding

    Howdy,
Been trying for a while to track down a jittery playback issue (as if frames are randomly held or skipped) when editing .mts files.
Jittery in PPcc and also after exporting to whatever... and especially using Youtube and Vimeo export presets.
VLC media player plays the .mts source files smoothly right off the SD card or HDD/SSD... most of the time, occasionally there is a hiccup but nothing like in PP.
The clips that do this are pretty much all of the panning clips and shot in either 24fps or 60fps 1080p.
I have seen this now on 2 different systems with different collections of .mts footage out of 2 different cameras.
Mine is a PC (running WIN7 i7 3770K 3.5Ghz, 16GB, GTX 660) and the other is a more powerful Mac with 32GB RAM (accustomed to smoothly dealing with RED footage).
I came across an Adobe suggestion to convert to a UTVideo codec ( http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/audio-video-glitches-avchd.html#id_49687 ) to deal with AVCHD... but it really didn't give much helpful info beyond the link to where it could be downloaded.
I tried the suggestion, downloaded the codec suite, made a preset in Media Encoder and transcoded, but it plays even worse than the AVCHD does natively (VLC doesn't recognize that codec for testing)
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best settings for the UT Video transcoding and/or hardware/software settings for the smoothest PP playback of .mts clips? I see in the forums here and elsewhere that lots of folks have various problems working with .mts footage in PP... I am hoping there is a functional solution beyond what I have unsuccessfully tried:
setting playback to 1/4 or 1/2
    rendering the sequance/timeline
    transcoding to .mp4/DNxHD
    clearing render files
    maximizing ram for PP usage
    closing all other apps
importing the whole 'private' folder from the SD card (which I can't seem to get PP to recognize anyway, it only will import the individual .mts files as far as I can tell)
    changed power options
turbo boost for the i7 on or off
and some other trial-and-errors gleaned from the forums that I can't recall at the moment
Any suggestions for what to try next or the proper settings for using the UT Video codec would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks/Cheers!

    Thanks Fuzzy!
Great article and it led to some more testing with a couple different lens, pan speeds, shutter speeds and frame rate combos... but still I am not finding anything definitive, I still get random, choppy/juddery playback (never seems to occur in the same place each time).
I have the frame drop indicator on and it says all is good (no dropped frames).
VLC and PotPlayer tend to play the clips off the card just fine, but does once in a while skip... a data transfer problem? I have played off the SD card and SSD main drive and my media HDD.
Caught a recent thread with others having sudden choppy playback, might be related?  http://forums.adobe.com/message/5938794#5938794
    I have PPro CC 7.2.0 (46)
But the suggestion to clear cache and reset preferences didn't seem to make a difference on my machine.
    Still ???
Going to try playing the same clips on a friends SUPER Mac and see what happens... although he sees the same thing with the .mts footage he already has.
    Onward!
