Video compression in After Effects

Hi,
i have a little problem with video compression in After Effects. When I was looking for example on that video: http://vimeo.com/18672227 the quality in HD is really great. When we was trying to compress our video in After Effects, the best result, which we was able to get, had 80 MB and 18 seconds and the quality was still much worst than like the one which i posted above. 80 MB for only 18 secs of video and with that quality seems too much for me. I really doubt it is normal. Then for example video which i posted above should have 2000 MB and i really don't believe that.
Is there some way how to get HD quality video for internet streaming with affordable size from After Effect rendering compression? Which settings, formats or codecs I should use? Or do i need some other Adobe program which is builded for this better compressions?

You are looking for an easy answer where there is none. Yes, there are better tools than AE for final compression like Adobe Media Encoder, but your format will still be H.264. The rest is very much a matter of experience and a combination of settings for data rates, encoding passes and so on plus tricks on how to deal with Gamma shifts and color skewing due to the chroma undersampling. Without seeing the actual footage, nobody will be able to give you any exact pointers, but generally the presets you find in AE and AME will provide a good basis. The rest is just tippy-toeing through the settings and learning by doing. Also do some general research on the matter. Because it is so complex and difficult, this topic is discussed to death on pretty much every forum that deals with video editing, DVD/ BluRay authoring and ripping movies for fun...

  • Is it possible to exclude one video card from After Effects.  There are 2 in this system and one, I believe, does not have CUDA support.

This system has 2 video cards.  A new nVidia Quadra 4000 and an older BlackMagic DeckLink Extreme 3D+. I would like After Effects to use only the nVidia card so I can take advantage of CUDA. Is there a preference I can set so that AE only uses the nVidia card?

What version of After Effects do you have (down to the decimal points)?

  • Horrible final video quality in After Effects CS6 when rendering a 1920x1080 video with H.264 format

I've been using After Effects CS6 on my Macbook Pro for over a year now with no issues. However, today when I exported a video to be rendered in 1920x1080p with H.264 format, I got the worst quality final video I've ever seen. I filmed my video files in 1920x1080p (like usual), and I clicked all the same buttons I normally do to export a video, but every HQ video I try to export looks horrible. I haven't clicked any crazy buttons or anything out of the ordinary.
I always export a video following this sequence:
File > Export > Add to Render Queue > Lossless > H.264 (quality format) > video output (make sure it's checked) > audio output (make sure it's checked) > OK > Output to Desktop
My render settings are always set as "best settings" including "full" resolution and "best" quality.
Now, when I click H.264, a "settings mismatch" pops up and says:
"Warning: Output file will be resized from 1920x1080 (1.00 PAR) to 320x1080 (6.00 PAR) to meet format constraints"
The rendering quality and playback quality within After Effects is great, but once the video is exported, it is horrible.
PLEASE HELP?! I have deadlines I need to meet!

Use the H.264 encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
The H.264 export features in After Effects have been removed in later versions because of numerous problems.

  • Decompressing video files using After effects

    Hello!!
I have a SONY Full HD camcorder that records in an AVCHD format.
So when I import my clips into my computer's hard drive, they are compressed. That meens that I have to decompress them in order to work with the best quality.
So, I use After Effects to export the AVCHD clips totaly uncompressed (I export them into none compressed Quicktime files). Then I re-import the uncompressed Quicktime clips into After Effects and start working with them, adding effects, color correction and so on. When I finish, I export them again totally uncompressed, in order to import them to Premiere for the final editting. I do that because I do not own an Adobe production suite so that to use Adobe Link for transfering files from After Effects to Premiere.
I decompress all my AVCHD clips because I won't need to apply effects to all of them, so some will go straight to Premiere without passing through After effects, since there is no need. So they must be decompressed.
I have noticed that when I decompressed an AVCHD clip, it got 578 GB from 84GB. So when I re-imported the uncompressed 578 GB clip in After Effects and added some effects and color correction, the final clip got out 392GB, although I chose the uncompressed settings and although I added effects. Normally it should be more than 578 GB.
Would you happen to know why is that?
Do you have any other suggestion of how should I decompress my camcorder clips? I have Quicktime but I cannot play AVCHD files, since it is an unsupported format for Quicktime.
    Thank you!!
    Giannis

The default QT output uses the Animation CoDec, which is a visually lossless compression. No problem here and I think you are overdoing. There is nothing wrong with converting files e.g. to LZW compressed TIFFs, PNG or EXR files, all formats producing much smaller file sizes than QT files and without losing any info...

  • How to add video created in After Effects or Premiere  to a Captivate project?

I’m new to Captivate.  I received a .cpvc file which is basically a screen capture  of using a website. I can create animation of a company logo, and other effects using  After effects and I also have Premier.  I need to integrate this with the  .cpvc presentation.
What is the best way to do this with the minimum loss of quality of the content created with Captivate and After Effects or Premiere?

    Hi,
From your description, my understanding is that you want to use video tag in your Office 365.
You should check the video type in your issue, video tag only support mp4 file which you could refer to this article:http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_video.asp.
In addition, you could refer to these articles:

  • Fixing upside down video in Adobe After Effects

Okay, I shot some footage using my iphone4, somehow my footage came out up side down so i am wondering if Adobe After Effects CS5.5 has a fix for that. Thanks.

Select your video in the Projects Panel. Right click and select New Comp From Selection. Select the video in the timeline. Press S to reveal the scale property. Click the icon that looks like a chain link to deselect Constrain Proportions. Type -100 in the second scale property.
    That's it.
You really need to go through the baiscs. You can't possibly learn AE by simply starting. Look here.

  • Trim video length inside After Effects CC?

    Hi all,
I have just started using After Effects CC and I'm a little stuck. I have a video imported that is 2 minutes long, but i only need 10 seconds of it. So, is there a way of trimming the video to the 10 seconds that i need? I tried "edit original" but that opens the video up in windows media player.
    Thanks for any help
    Paul

I second what Rick says, you really need to get a foundation first or you'll be really frustrated. Getting started with After Effects is a great place to start. It may look like an intimidating wall of text, but it helps make AE much less intimidating. Trust me - skip the basics and you'll be frustrated. This is the fastest free way to get up to speed in AE that I know of.

  • First video with Adobe After Effects

Hey folks! First time posting and first video with this program. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD8GS_Mum9Y
Please tell me how it coul be imroved, suggestions, etc. I am very interested in learning this as I see it can be very usefull in the future for me.
    Thanks.

NIce work. Particularly liked the use of the music.
A couple of books that might be useful are:
"The DV Rebels Guide" by Stu Maschwitz. Also a good site which is used by readers of that book is 'The Rebel Cafe".  A lot of talk about  After Effects. over there - the site (and book) covers loads of other areas and advice about filmaking on a budget.
    and
"Editing Techniques with Final CUt Pro".  by Micheal Wohl.  -        I mention this because half of it is about Film Grammar - ie Film School Stuff - How to edit your film to make it more interesting.  It is excellent on all that area and I found it very thorogh and informative. But there may be other books out there which are good on editing.  BUt I think that the first part of it  about film editing is relevant to every film maker. You dont need to use Final Cut to learn the art side of editing in this book.
I was also recommended  - "Developing digital short films" by Sherri Sheridan - but i hav'nt read it yet.
Have you visited MDOT Strange's Film School on You Tube? He has some good suggestions for what to read to learn, and he gives some good advice. (And he has turned down a hollywood deal for one of his filmsl!!)
    Best wishes

  • Best video card for After Effects CS5: nVidia's CUDA or Radeon's OpenGL?

I've searched all over the internet and I've found that both are companies are great. But I hear CUDA is important with CS5 (or at least Premiere). While ATI Radeon's OpenGL is very important for After Effect.
I do animation in After Effect. Very intense HD stuff with many effects and layers and I want it to run as smooth as possible, So I'm thinking Radeon 5850 (with my budget). BUT is Radeon's OpenGL more important than nVidia's CUDA?
What will make After Effects run the best it can; between say Radeon 5850 vs a comperable nVidia card like GTX 470.
What should I know about a video card to make After Effects rock?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for reading this, I really need an answer.

Adobe use OpenGL in AE and Photoshop (maybe other software too ?)
ATi card are cheaper for better perf :
    - ATi Radeon 6870 : 180$ -- perf : 2800pts
    - nVidia Geforce 550 Ti : 180$ --- perf: 1800 pts
I think people should buy ATi's card fi they only doing AE
of course I'm speaking for people who don't want to spend a lot of money on the GPU.

  • Alpha channel video issue with After Effects

For some reason, a perfect mask in After Effects produces a
thin gray border around the mask in flash when converting to FLV.
Has anyone had this problem? Tried everything.
    Thanks.

  • Can I use nvidia geforce gtx 650 2gb video card for after effects?

Hi I saw the list of graphics cards that are compatible with  after effects... and am wondering if the nvidia geforce 650 2 gb would work?
I realized all the graphics cards have cuda cores, the gtx 650 2 gb isnt on the list but it has 384 cuda cores?
    Is it compatible?
    GTX 650 2g:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133474

If it's not on the system requirements list, then After Effects won't use it for GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer. Read this page for details about what this means:

  • Problem of Video Export on After Effect CC

How come my screen resolution changed automatically after I convert my comp to H.264 (mp4) movie by After Affects CC? Graphics come out weirdly fatter, such as the ellipse I draw can't be in perfect circle. Can someone help me fix this issue, please?

Your composition was rectangular pixels, your artwork was improperly interpreted, you failed to understand pixel aspect ratios. Generally you always want to create all of your projects using After Effects default composition sizes that result in square pixel projects. Only the very rare project would be delivered in a non square pixel format.
If you post your composition settings we can verify this is true and that I'm not just guessing. The only other option is that for some reason you adjusted the output module and render settings to scale the project and produce a non square pixel render.
