Video compression times

I am considering purchasing a Macbook Pro,
I'm a mobile user who also does a lot of video work (mostly compressing into many differenct formats and resolutions for each video.)
I would like to get some feedback from users about DV compression times using softwares like Final Cut Pro, and After Effects going using .h264 and going into formats like wmv and mov mainly.
Any info is appreciated, as this will be my ultimate deciding factor on what to buy.

There are 2 things, in particular, that you're doing 'wrong,' so to speak.
One is lowering the data rate. With h.264 compression, a lower data rate means your system has to work extra hard crunch the information down. Since the iPod/iPhone setting is multi-pass by default, that means more passes (and longer encoding times) for a 1100 kbps encode vs. a 1500 kbps encode.
Second, iPods & iPhones have a limited frame rate spectrum. I've not seen anything less than 23.98fps or more than 30fps work correctly.
As Michael mentioned already, exporting directly to Compressor takes a tremendous amount of time, about 4x to 6x as long as dropping in a QT movie into Compressor. It's sometimes worth it because the compression quality is superior, but you don't seem to have the luxury of time.
In terms of immediate solutions, if you simply need to get some compressed quick, use the default setting but uncheck the multi-pass box.
For a potentially more complete solution, please detail what your sequence settings (frame size, frame rate, etc) are in FCP and what frame size you're attempting to export to (iPhone @ 480px wide? or iPod at @ 640px wide). Or is your issue more about data rate? Do you need the 30 min file to be 25 MB, for example?

i am having problems exporting my time lapses from quick time pro i need to save my files as photo jpegs but the standard video compression window will not open fully, it just keeps my mac (old 1.6Ghz 2.5 GB sdram G5 still good for most stuff i need) spinning for ever but i can see compression type H.264 selected and the other setting but i can not select any other options as it still thinking but never opens! why is this happening how do i get round it?
my work flow is: 300 images shot on a 5d mark II medium jpegs opened in Light Room cropped to 16:9 then exported and opened in quick time i can save a .mov H264 giving me files sizes of 14 mb for a 16 second time lapse, mp4 9 mb. the only way i can get large files is saving as a self contained movie then i get 300mb files.
i need to save my files 1920 x 1080 photo jpeg codec as i want HD quality.
i am sure there is a simple way round this?
    thanks guys!

It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?

  • No Preview Box in "Standard Video Compression Settings"

    Hi:
I'm taking a class in Photoshop CS5.  Our textbook is Adobe Photoshop CS5 Classroom in A Book and we've reached Lesson 12 Working with 3D Images.  At the end of the chapter we made a 3 second Quicktime (H.264 Compression) movie.  According to the book, after choosing Quicktime Export in the Render Video diolog box, it should open a Movie Settings diolog box which, after choosing Videe Settings button, opens the Standard Video Compression Settings box.  In the lower right of that box there should be a Preview window showing the effect of the compression on a frame of the animation.  For me the preview window is blank even though I can compress the file. I've moved the animation's timeline current time indicator to the beginning, middle, and end of the animation but to no effect.
I'm rumming a Macbook 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of SDRAM.  The computer does support OpenGL which appears to be chosen in the 3D section of Photoshop's preferences.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Don't worry about file size at this point; the determining factor is program length. A single layer 4.7GB DVD will hold about two hours of video. The compression is handled in the DVD authoring application.
From FCE, just export to QuickTime Movie (do not use QT Conversion). If you'll burn the DVD on the same computer, make sure the "self-contained" box is unchecked for a much quicker export.

  • Compression Times

Does it really take 13 hours to encode a 1 hour 16 minute video?
Using Compressor 2.0.1 default 120 minute high quality setting. I have been encoding for 2 hours and 25 minutes, the encode is 72% done and it says it will take an additional 10 hours 52 minutes!!!!
That is slower than my dead grandma.
Is there a faster method than compression?
I have tried using EyeTV 200 and I get a "video bit rate too high" build killer dialogue box. (encode from EyeTV to DVDSP at 120 minute rate)
    What should I try next?
    Thanks,
    C.J.

It obviously depends upon the speed of your computer and the preset you use. On my 800MHz PowerBook I get about a 16 to 1 ratio for a two-pass best quality MPEG-2 preset when I export from FCP to Compressor v2. However, for a one-pass good quality preset I get under 2 to 1 (one hour of video compressed in under two hours) when I submit the job directly to Compressor.
I've seen a few recent reports from dual G5 users who have reported real-time two-pass MPEG-2 compression and much better than real-time for one-pass jobs.

  • FYI--Compressing times of a dual 450 vs dual 1.25 vs Quad

Just got my quad and after some hoops to jump thru I have fcp 4.5/compressor 1.2 running fine now.....
Now these times are not 100% accurate....off by a few minutes here and there but this is what i've got from going from two g4's dual 450 and dual 1.25 to a G5 Quad.....
This project is 1 hour and 40 minutes with a fair bit of colour correction, a third of it time remapped, and a third of it with a widescreen matte...
dual 450 - just the video compress --approx. 15 hours
dual 1.25 - just video --approx. 10 hours
Quad - just video compress---under 1 hour and 30 minutes....
All I have to say is holy crap batman!!
For me getting the quad now certainly makes a lot of financial sense as I will be able to finish projects a lot faster. I have a back log of about a dozen projects. Can now ship off my slowest mac to a friend who can work for me as well.....:)
The Upgrade is coming in the next week or two and I should see a bit of a difference there as well.....
    WOW WOW WOW.......

  • Using BlackMagic Intensity Pro Video Compression card with FCP in a MacPro

BlackMagic is offering the Intensity Pro card that they claim is enhancing the quality of video compression for better results than software driven compression, even with Standard DV in addition to HDV, and at a surprisingly cheap cost (less than $300).
    http://www.h-digital.com.au/hardware/hardwareview.asp?id=152
As someone used such hardware driven compression card in a MacPro ?
Does-it really help making better quality DVDs?
If not are there better hardware driven compression card?

7-8 years ago, we said that analog video was at the low end and DV was at the high end.
Uh, DV was NEVER on the high end. Digibeta and Beta were analog, and were HIGHER end than DV. Just because it was digital doesn't mean it was better. DV is compressed 5:1 and has 4:1:1 color sampling. Beta was 4:2:2 and better than DV...and Digibeta was and still is the high end SD format. DVCPRO 50 a close second. No...DV came in on the low end...like HDV comes in on the low end of the HD spectrum.
If this Intensity card does not help to get better compression than software driven compression, is there another card which can do so ?
Well, I answered this, but you must have missed my answer, so I will bold it for you: *THERE IS NO CARD OUT THERE FOR THE MAC THAT WILL AID IN DVD COMPRESSION.* I don't know about the PC side, so I make the statement to include MAC only. There are several hardware solutions for encoding DVDs that distributors use when making the theatrical DVDs like OCEANS 13...but those are separate hardware encoders. And no, again, those encoders are not available on a Mac.
What I mean at the end is to find ways to have higher quality DVDs than when using software such as Compressor. Do you follow me ?
I follow you....you aren't following me. Since I am an editor and not a distributor, I don't know what those solutions are. They exist outside of the editing world, so you have to GOOGLE this or look elsewhere. Needless to say, the Intensity does not aid in this. No capture card does. That is not what they are designed for. They are designed to capture non-firewire formats and to output to non-firewire formats...not to aid in DVD compression.

  • Why is acrobat pro XI does not open a video (Quick Time) using the interactive object tools ?

    Hi
    I have a Macbook pro using OS X 8.5.1.
I have just download acrobat pro XI.
When I try putting a video (Quick time) in a PDF document, the button is there, but when I clic to play, the document is close without notice.
Acrobat pro XI is suppose to read .mov file, so why it is not working ?
    Thank's

Video in the Acrobat XI Family must be in H.264 or FLV format, as it's displayed using Flash Player.

  • MacBook display's video response time?

Anyone know the MacBook's video response time?

Apple doesn't publish response time, but generically speaking modern TN displays are right around 8 msec today. That would be my best guess for the MB display.

  • Adjust video compression within iWeb?

Is there any way to adjust the QT video compression when posting movies via iWeb? Currently, my wife opens iWeb, and then selects movies from within the media pane (specifically, the iPhoto library). These have not been compressed in iPhoto, and as she's not very techie, I don't want her to have to go through that hassle.
It seems strange that, from within iWeb, there is no video settings for compression. Right now, a 30 second video can be 50 MB or more. That is ridiculous.
Any thoughts on how to compress without adding a bunch of complicated steps?

Yes, it's very ridiculous that an application for creating webpages has no features for compressing video.
And the movies in iPhoto are usually the raw material that comes out of a camera. They have to be edited too.
Perhaps an application for editing movies does what you want. iMovie comes to mind. What a burden.

  • Video Compression Help

    Hey guys and gals,
I just finished my music video assignment for media production class and everyone thought it was really good, albeit a bit weird haha. I want to put it up on YouTube or Google Video but I dont want it to look crappy. I have like 10 videos on Google but the quality could be better. I want the music video to look as good as possible. Do any of you know of any tips you could give me for video compression? I have Handbrake and tried playing around with that but the videos still look pixilated on Google and YouTube.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • HD Video Compression Issue

I'm looking for information on weather or not Flash CS5 (I currently use Flash 8) can handle HD video compression for web streaming.  I have tried this using Flash 8 but only get an error, however as you might expect Flash 8 does compress standard definition video for web streaming. I have done research on the internet, but really haven't come up with a definite answer except to find references to using Sorenson Squeeze or Final Cut Pro, but I don't want to pay for another Video editing program (currently using Final Cut Express) if I can upgrade Flash and get the HD compression feature.
Any help and advise would be apreciated. Thanks

If you're publishing for Flash 9 or higher (which CS5 can do) then you can publish to H.246. I would think that FCE could do that.
Normally I would say that you could download a trial and see for yourself. But I think because 5.5 has been announced Adobe isn't offering a trial for the next couple of weeks. There were a lot of improvement to the Flash video encoder in CS5. That being said if you really want to do a lot of intense video work you should get the best tools.

  • Video compression on Zen Neeo

    Hello all!
I was bought a Zen Neeon 2 GB from Japan as a gift recently. I'm quite fond of it so far, no problems getting music on and off or with the radio and getting videos on and off and converting them is fine too.
BUT (yes, there's always a but) the video compression on the video converter software isn't up to much. An AVI of an hour long, full size, decent quality episode of spooks for example, runs through the converter software and whilst the picture obviously shrinks, the file doubles in size to about 900 mb, leaving no space for anything else! Does anyone know of a way to compress the files in the right format? I have tried loking for firmware / software updates but it seems the player has only been released in japan and I can't use that bit of the creative site!
Any ideas? How can I compress files for this player?

Hi! I also encountered the same problem [size="6" color="#ff0000">I wish I bought ipod instead of this JUNK!

  • Video compression in After Effects

    Hi,
i have a little problem with video compression in After Effects. When I was looking for example on that video: http://vimeo.com/18672227 the quality in HD is really great. When we was trying to compress our video in After Effects, the best result, which we was able to get, had 80 MB and 18 seconds and the quality was still much worst than like the one which i posted above. 80 MB for only 18 secs of video and with that quality seems too much for me. I really doubt it is normal. Then for example video which i posted above should have 2000 MB and i really don't believe that.
Is there some way how to get HD quality video for internet streaming with affordable size from After Effect rendering compression? Which settings, formats or codecs I should use? Or do i need some other Adobe program which is builded for this better compressions?

You are looking for an easy answer where there is none. Yes, there are better tools than AE for final compression like Adobe Media Encoder, but your format will still be H.264. The rest is very much a matter of experience and a combination of settings for data rates, encoding passes and so on plus tricks on how to deal with Gamma shifts and color skewing due to the chroma undersampling. Without seeing the actual footage, nobody will be able to give you any exact pointers, but generally the presets you find in AE and AME will provide a good basis. The rest is just tippy-toeing through the settings and learning by doing. Also do some general research on the matter. Because it is so complex and difficult, this topic is discussed to death on pretty much every forum that deals with video editing, DVD/ BluRay authoring and ripping movies for fun...

  • Canon S100 Photo Capture Time Correct, but Video Capture Time Is Wrong

I have a Canon S100 and just started importing photos and video into my LR 4.3 catalog. I convert RAW to DNG, and the Capture Time on the photos in LR is correct. However, the video Capture Time is shifted forward exactly 8 hours. I know how to correct the video Capture Time, but is there anything I can do to stop this from happening in the first place?
I looked at what the metadata looks like in Bridge.
    PHOTO:
Date Created = Correct Capture Time
Date File Modified = The time I imported the file into LR.
    VIDEO:
Date Created = Capture Time + 8 hours
Date File Modified = Correct Capture Time
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

In general, LR doesn't know how to read video metadata.  It uses the file's date-modified (as set by the operating system) for filtering, sorting, and pre-populating the Metadata > Edit Capture Time dialog, but it uses the file's date-created (as set by the operating system) to display in the grid view.
So you might look for a file utility that lets you set the file's date-created to be the same as the file's date-modified (note that on Windows, at least, copying a file changes the date-created but preserves the date-modified).
