Video Conversion from DVD

Hi,
I have a huge DVD collection and am off to Uni in September. I do not want to have to transport my DVD collection down with me so was wondering what would be the best format to convert the DVD's to. Is AVI the best format and if so what would be the best program to use?
Many Thanks

Hi there,
It is of well understand that the copyright infringing happens when non authorized copies and reproductions are done for commercial interests, but before you do your copies you should consult copyright holders to grant permissions or know you already have then.
DVDs Copying Softwares Companies usually manifests that "It is against the law to reproduce copyrighted material for the purpose of selling it to third parties. Some countrys' laws only allows for you to make one backup copy of any software or media for personal and archival purposes."
For your understanding here is a List of Copyright case law - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listof_copyright_caselaw
And I think about file format I think that MKV would be good for a high definition, doesn't AVI generate very large files? I would bet in a good set for MPEG-4 format in your personal backup storage.
Good luck.

  • Best practice video conversion from download

I am looking for best practice for video conversions.
I am downloading adobe recordings via this method:
    http://server.adobeconnect.com/xyz/output/filename.zip?download=zip
From here, I have been converting the FLVs using either freemake video converter or FLV converter. I have tried converting into AVI (XVID), MOV, WMV, etc. (I need the file to be under 600 MB for an hour of recording, therefore it is going to need some type of compression).
My goal is to import the video into Sony Vegas Pro 10 for further editting. I have found that whatever method I use, the video and audio does not sync properly about 50% of the time. The video time is longer than the audio time usually. Or that there are other various errors, such as the video just freezing halfway through the video.
I have been using connect for a few years now, but with each update I find (connect 8, 9, etc), that the problems are getting worse. At this point I am just wasting time trying to convert into various formats using various codecs just trying to luck upon one where the video is at least without error.
What methods are others using to convert the FLV to a workable editable format?

Can't the FLV files be changed into many different formats through Apple's
Compressor or Adobe Media Encoder? These formats can then be opened in
standard video editing software for editing.

Yes, I use this as a last resort, as the quality of capture this was is
signifcatnly lower. As well as it is a much more time consuming process. I
sometimes have over 50 parts of 1 hour video. To use camtasia, you need
first to record it, then it must be saved in a camtasia format, and then
lastly rendered into avi or wmv. Therefore, it is does take awhile.
Really, I feel there shouldnt be so many errors in the conversion process,
but I am finding the FLV recordings themselves have problems. This last
file I am looking at, even the recording playback on adobe connect, has
serious issues with audio and video sync. A problem that is all too common

  • Is it possible to export a video clip from DVD player to iMovie '09?

If I load a homemade DVD onto my iMac using Disk Utility and then import either the entire disc or portions of the disc into iMovie, that works just fine. However I noticed that some clips are missing in iMovie, even though they are on the iMac in form of a .dmg file on the desktop. The same file that was used to import in to iMovie. If I look at this file using DVD player, everything is there, but some of these clips are missing in the event window. So I created a video clip in DVD player of those pieces missing in iMovie and now how can I get these into iMovie?

Hey, best way to import video from a DVD video disc for editing is to acctually have a simple video file. Use Handbrake or MPEG StreamClip to read the disc and create a video file off the video stream.
You could also set in and out points anc manually create several clips, which may help with playback and rendering for editing. I don't know how extensive you're going to get in your editing with iMovie...
    Hope that helped.

  • Import video clip from DVD

Can anyone help me learn what I need to import video clips from my family video DVD's? I created the DVD's from tapes through Pinnacle Studio 8 (before becoming a Mac fan).
Thanks for any help you can give me,

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
My personal choice would be to edit them to a compatible format such as DV, you can do this with mpegstreamclip (free) provided you have the QT mpeg2 playback component installed (think it's $30), there are other third party software solutions, no doubt others will have their favourites.

  • Inport video clips from dvd

    Hi
I like to know how to import video clips from a DVD? I tried and i could not figure out.
    thanks

The VOB files must be demuxed.
When they are, there two generation losses involved.
If you edit and reencode to DVD, that's three generation losses.

  • Getting video files from DVD

Hi. Can I use Quicktime to capture video files from a DVD? If not, how can I do this? Please keep it basic! Many thanks.

Can I use Quicktime to capture video files from a DVD?
QT does not support VOB (muxed MPEG-2 DVD content) files natively. Even with the MPEG-2 component installed, it will not support muxed AC3 audio. The normal approach here is to use an MPEG-based, third party application to extract/convert the VOB content to a more friendly QT compatible compression format. For your purposes, it sounds as if the free HandBrake application may be what you are looking for until you gain more experience in working with these file formats.

  • Importing Video Files from DVD and the net onto final cut express 4

    2 questions:
1st: Ive imported a video file downloaded from the net to practice editing, but once I have done that, the video file has no audio? how do I get the audio for those files?
2nd: I had ripped some video files from my university film project onto my laptop, but I cant Import the files into final cut express to further edit it (because it was a group project), because its the wrong format and stuff. How do I fix this and allow it to be imported?
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Cheers

ohk cool, wat about my first problem with the sound not being imported?
Most likely the file is multiplexed. That means the audio and video are rolled into one. Same thing applies as the other post, the file needs to be in a format that FCE recognizes. Streamclip may do it, depending on the type of file of course.

  • Samples of video scenes from DVD movies

I am not sure, but in the music business you are able to buy sound, instrument or music samples on a legal way for use in your own arrangements. I wonder whether this misght be possible for samples from offcial cinema movies you are allowed to use in your own work. I know it is maybe naief from me, but sometimes you think wow that small piece in a movie I could use as well in my own video. LOL.
Is it possible or is this totally impossible?
    Jan Bruijn

find clip you want to use. search for info on what studio produced it and who distributed it.  Sometimes the product gets either sold or someone other than producer ( like distributer maybe ) gets "rights" for showing and licensing etc... lots of deals going on... so look below for links to help find out who owns what copyrights.
It takes TIME to get through to people and get responses and so on... lots of time.... so start this process in pre-production ....waaaayyyy before you actually need what you want to use... as in the end you'll also have to deal with how to get the actual " good " copy of what you want in a format that's not already compressed a lot, etc. ( you dont want delivery only format ).
Its complicated a little bit and also you may have to write more than once to people to get response.. they dont live to help you out.. they often are a bit slow... depends on whats in it for THEM... you know ??  another words its just normal business.
most links at this site look good for starting your investigation into this stuff

  • Video converter from dvd to ipod

can someone please tell me a free video converter to convert videos from a dvd to my ipod and tunes

Thank you for your posting, which is very helpful, however it will be better if you can post on the Video forum as well

By the way, I must say that it is a very good post

  • Video Clips from DVD Player

While watching a personal DVD, converted from a VCR tape, I wanted to create & Save a clip.
I performed a set start time and set stop time, followed by "Add". I then named the clip.
Now I can't find the clip, which is supposed to be in my "clip collection". I haven't established a clip collection. Where would such a collection be established and later found? Thank you.

In order to edit a DVD you have to make another one, in other words: bring the video into iMovie, edit, and burn a new DVD.
You need to convert the VOB files on the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Flip Video conversion to DVD

This seems like it should be easy but apparently it is not. I made a short video on a Flip Video camera. The format is .avi. I want to burn it to a DVD and play it on my DVD player. I tried doing that and the DVD player would not play it -- incompatible format. Any idea what I need to do?
(I've worked quite a bit with audio, but as you can probably tell, I am inexperienced with video.)

I just recently got a Flip Ultra HD & have created a few dvd's of video taken with it by importing the video from iPhoto (have to change the image capture setttings for the Flip) into iMovie & then creating a dvd from there ... the dvd's have been perfect & play in a regular dvd player as well as on a Windows computer.

  • First Play at Preview ok, but not working correctly when Video started from DVD

    Hello
I created a Project with Encore CS5.1. When i test via the "preview" button (disc symbol) everything works fine.
When i export the Project to a DVD the Video starts directly with the Main Menue although i expect starting with the intro clip. As i said with encore preview everything works fine.
Has anybody an idea how to solve this issue?
    Thanks in advance
    Rene

    Hi Bill and John
    Thank you for your feedback.
Attached i'll send you a screen shot of the flow chart and the specs.
I just created a new project with only the "Vorspann - Trailer" and the Main Menue. All other links are not created yet.
With the preview everything is ok but if i create an image the video starts directly with the Main Menue.
    Kind regards and thanks again.
    Rene
    With preview ok
Crate an image or DVD > video starts with direct play of the main menue

  • Transferring a 20 minute video clip from DVD to Mac

    Hi
I would loke to transfer an old 20 minute clip from a DVD to my Mac. How do I do this?

I'm assuming you have an external DVD drive. You can use Handbrake to 'rip' the DVD to your computer, assuming the DVD isn't copy-protected.

  • Copy video/audio from DVD

One of the reasons I got PP was the idea that I could copy some of a Buddy Rick DVD, and slow down and loop sections so I could figure out what he is doing.  Unfortunately a copy protection wouldn't let me import anything,  Is there any way around this? I am not looking to disseminate it or anything. On the DVD I can't loop, or slow down and it is hard to even go back to the place I want to start.

I don't edit VOB from a DVD, so have NO idea if this will help... but might be worth a look
