Video conversion to digital for use in imovie

I'm having videos converted to digital files, assuming I will be able to import to imovie and edit.  Any pitfalls to avoid?  Do the files need to be AVI format?  (more expensive than mpeg)

I similarly find the forced use of iPhoto cumbersome.
The easiest method I have found for importing images or video from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac is via Preview.
Simply open up Preview, which is the default image viewer on Macs, and under the "File" menu choose the device that you've connected (your iPhone, iPad or camera). Then, you have the choice of selecting the images or video you want to import and where you want to put it.
It's the "where you want to put it part" that I most appreciate.
Anyway, it's as simple as that.
Hope it helps others!

Download the latest version of iTunes, then plug in your iPad.
Regardless of what OS you have you will have a photo sync option.
It may look different being windows, but it is not so dramatically different.
Here is a guide for photos, but works just as well for video:
Step A: Opening iTunes and Setting Photo Sync Up
Fire up the iTunes – Make sure that your iPad device is selected (see A1), and that you are switched to the Photos section (see A2) – finally – make sure you check “Sync Photos” Radio Button (see A3)…
Also make sure to Tick the Include Video button!
Step B: Selecting Photo Folders to Sync
You will be on the same screen – double-check that B1 is checked and move onto B2 – here you will chose folder that contains pics you want to move onto the device. Finally, for the purpose of this exercise – let’s chose “Selected Folders” as in B3 (I try to avoid “All Folders” as my photos folder has a large number of photos that would occupy pretty much all free memory space I have on my iPad)
Step C: Navigate to Photo Folder
This should be a straight forward step that you have probably completed many times before – navigate to the folder that contains photos that you want copied onto your device – the path to your folder will be something similar to C1 (emphasis on ’similar’ – but not “the same”). Once done, click C2 (“Select Folder”) as shown on the screenshot.
Step D: Excluding Folders from Sync (SYNCING)
In this step you will be able to exclude photo folders that you don’t want to see on your iPad – Verify that D1 and D2 are correct and then move to D3 where you will select what is being moved onto the iPad.
ONCE YOU ARE DONE HIT THE SYNC BUTTON (LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF THE ITUNES APPLICATION)
    Step E: Open Photo App
Quick and easy – find a Photo app on your iPad (it’s likely it’ll not be at the same spot as shown here)
    Step F: Opening Albums View
Once the Photo App is opened – hit the ALBUMS button (see F1):
    Step G: Open Album
Once in “Albums” view of the iPhoto App – you will be able to see all albums that have been synced – the albums should contain the photos you would like to see. For the puprose of this exercise I’ll hit G1 (album with Bird Photos):
    Step H: The End

  • Video File Conversions for use in IMOVIE

I have a Sony DCR-DVD100 Camcorder and a Powerbook G4. Video files on the camera cannot be imported into IMOVIE for use and editing. The computer can play the files via a USB connection. The video files include VIDEO_TS.BUP VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.VOB
Can anybody offer advice or recommendations? Apparently there are downloads which will convert the files for use in IMOVIE but I need some guidance. Thanks.

  • Converting RM files (Real Video) for use in iMovie

    Hello,
I'm looking for a program that can help me convert RM (real video) files for use with iMovie.
I have heard that ffmpegX is great to use. I went to their website, downloaded everything and got it up and running...but when I try to convert anything, it doesn't work. I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong?
    Any advice? Thanks.

    Yes
I found a program but am experiencing lots of trouble with it. I was hoping that others could give me a better suggestion.
I've actually downloaded and installed ffmpeg but the problem I'm experiencing now is that the videos do not convert. The program starts to work and then three seconds later I get the dialog box that says everything has been converted but the file created is 0KB and of course will not open.
Any ideas about what could be going wrong? I've attempted to convert the files to different formats and try converting different files as well. I still have the problem.

I know that if you upload the files to iMovie from one device the chronology isn't a problem, but I'm adding video files from a couple of iPhones and a couple of camcorders. any help much appeciated.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • Best conversion for mpeg2 for use in iMovie 08?

    Hi, there...
Still new to this Mac world, so I'd appreciate any support. I have an Sony DVD 101 Camcorder that records in mpeg2. My Mac won't recognize it, so I have to convert my movies to a format that iMovie recognizes. I just don't know what format to choose. I have the software, I just don't know what is the best resolution, etc. to convert to. Any ideas? I'd be most grateful. A nice picture from a 4:3 would do nicely! Thanks!

What format do movies have to be to use in iMovie 08?
AppleMan and Patrick have basically covered the import/capture formats. However, if you are importing files at the Finder level, then DV (DV audio with DV video), DV25, DVCPRO25, DVCPRO50, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 are probably the ones most commonly used. For audio -- DV, Linear PCM (Big Endian & Little Endian) , and AAC are probably the ones most used. NOTE: Avoid Apple Animation and Apple Video files. They will import and edit but will not export properly.

  • If AME 2014 no longer allows .flv export, how am I supposed to import videos to the stage for use in Flash CC?

Flash CC will notimport .mp4 videos for use on the stage, only .flv. This seems like an ENORMOUS oversight, so maybe I am missing something. But if I'm not missing anything, WHEN THE **** WILL ADOBE UPDATE FLASH TO MATCH THE STUPID FORCED WORKFLOW UPDATE THEY'VE DONE WITH AME AND AFTER EFFECTS? I HAVE TO USE SOME RANDOM 3RD PARTY WEBSITE TO CONVERT .MOV OR .MP4 FILES TO .FLV FOR USE IN FLASH!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

  • Converting wmv files for use in imovie 9 for users who have pc

To convert wmv files use your pc windows movie maker. (if you have one) On your pc, open windows movie maker, get collections and get your wmv project/video, drag it into the timeline, and then save in your computer, save it as an avi file and rename it. After send file to your memory card reader, that way you can transfer that file onto your mac!! And voila! I tried to email it but file became too large so transfering it to a memory card is the easiest. This took me days to figure out, I hope I have helped someone out there.....

I don't want to use DV because these .m2t files are from an HDV camcorder and I want to preserve the aspect ratio and resolution in the files. What other "flavor" of HD would you suggest that I convert them to since (a) I can't bring the files into FCP6 or Compressor (b) I don't see any other flavors of HD to use in VisualHub.
The whole business of converting .m2t files to a FCP6 compatible format, i.e. a Quicktime format, would seem to be one that is commonly encountered, and yet I have never found a thread on this forum that really answers this question: What is the best workflow for converting .m2t files for use in FCP? Surely, one of the pros who frequent this forum must have dealt with this issue and have an answer.
I don't want to have to recapture the files from tape all over again just to use them in FCP6.

  • How to activate QTPro and use it to render a Google Tour for use in iMovie

I am a registered owner of QT Pro 7 and can ´t see it on my apps. Why not?
Wanting to use it to render a Google Tour for use in a i Movie project. How to?
    Thanks for your attention.
    Any help gratefully received.

I am a registered owner of QT Pro 7 and can ´t see it on my apps. Why not?
It will be listed as "QuickTime Player.app" in the Applications folder unless you have moved it elsewhere or deleted it.
Wanting to use it to render a Google Tour for use in a i Movie project. How to?
If you mean you want to open the "Google Tour" (and it is some sort of a movie) in the QT Pro Player to convert or pre-edit it for use in your iMovie project, then either open the QT Player, navigate to the file, and open it or, double-click on the file to open it in the QT Pro player.

  • AAC vs. mp3: ripping in iTunes for use in iMovie

I've read a bunch of posts tangentially related to this question, but couldn't find anything that nailed this one.
[1] Can iMovie use AAC files?
[2] Assuming it can, will ripping my CD collection with AAC encoding for use in iTunes (and on my iPod) give me access to all of those tunes for incorporation intoe iMovie presentations?
From what I've read, AAC produces higher-quality audio with smaller files sizes (I realize this is a point of hot-debate!), so I'd prefer ripping with AAC. But if iMovie doesn't like AAC files, I'll stick with mp3
    Thanks!

  • Best Digital Camera for use with iMovie 09

i'm purchasing an iMac next week and am looking for a digital camera, a major concern is video compatibility. I have found mostly just threads on problems, OKAY, so i know what NOT to get. But i would like to know what TO get. The camera i have found I like most is the Casio Exilim EX-S12bk, but it doesn't play well with iMovie due to the .AVI format it records to, the actual codec is motion jpeg i believe. I'm looking for something with optical zoom in recording mode, hi def video, and of course great photos. Very noobish to cameras so bells and whistles are not as important as usability. But i want to import straight to iMovie, i don't want to get freeware, no conversions, or anything. That's more work than i want to spend. Any help?

yeah, i've upped my dollar level to 380ish tops,
Sony, i've found that the only one i could really get would be the tx1 or wx1, but they don't come out till sept, and october, so too bad there, Or perhaps the Sony W290, that was an option, there was one thing i didn't like about it though, don't remember what it was, hmmm, otherwise i didn't see something i had to have
If i could wait, I think no doubt i would get the tx1 when it came out,
SOOO, I've settled on the Canon SD960, has all the features i believe i want. I was gonna go with the SD970, but the 960 is smaller and a tad cheaper. I was looking at the SD780 for some time, however, the picture quality came into ? as well as video quality. Haven't seen those complaints as far as video is concerned. Of course there are always gonna be naysayers. All the sample images i've seen look great, reviews seem to be good also. So for now, I think I'm going with the SD960.
Further, I was looking really close at the Lumix ZS3, as stated above, but it's too big for my liking, the whole Lumix line seems to be on the large size, compared to other compacts, especially the Sony cyber shot's which seem to be quite small in comparison with other brands. Overall though it seemed like a great camera.
Still not sure why i'm passing on the Sony W290......and am also VERY, tempted to wait altogether and get the WX1 or TX1, but i really don't want to wait, if i take great care of it, perhaps i can still return it after my trip !!! Walmart takes anything back if you say it *****.......

  • How to convert MPEG videos for use on iMovie?

I filmed my drama assignment with my friend on her video camera, she gave me all the files on a USB and when I got home to start editing on iMovie, it says:  iMovie cannot open files in the “MPEG movie” format.

I forgot to mention in a strange way there is not a straight standard format used by cameras as I discover In iMove and Final Cut Express. Mpeg is pretty standard but can be different. For example AVCHD or AVCHD Lite, Motion Jpeg on Panasonic. Each Camera uses similar names but the compression format maybe different and not compatible with iMovie. This why I like Toast, it converts almost anything to a useable format. But if your starting out the Camera Brand and Model is the key to finding compatibility with iMove. Since I have not used iMove in a while and don't know the new version go to the forum with Camera etc. and ask about compatibility. But Toast with some tries will most likely give you what need. This can be frustrating but you'll get there, it may take a little time. Also open the folder with files to see exactly what you've got. You really need to know exactly what you've got. I hope QuickTime work out for you
