Video Converters to get Sony Video into iMovie

I am new to the video side of the world and need some advice. I am trying to import videos into iMovie. I am trying to import video from a Sony Cam, a DVD tht I made myself but mow would like to edit and my Flip Video. Additionally I will import video from a friends Nikon. Apple "suggested" handbrake, streamclip and toast. I see there a number of them on the app store. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Handbrake will be useful for converting the DVD back to a format that iMovie can edit. MPEG Streamclip requires some extra software still sold by Apple caleld the MPEG-2 QuickTime Playback component, download the beta of Streamclip and follow their directions for installing it will get the MPEG-2 component installed correctly. This will then let you open the DVD directly in Streamclip and get pieces out of it or just convert the whole disk to Apple Intermediate Codec. As for Sony and Flip video, don't know specifically which camera you have and what formats they record in, but there's likely a way to convert most of them into Apple Intermediate Codec which is the native editing/playback format that iMovie uses.

  • Getting Sony movies into iMovie

I have Sony DSC H9 and HX1 digital cameras. The movies are quite good, but they don't seem to be compatible with iMovie. I have been able to xfer into iMovie HD by going through Quick Time. But doesn't see to work with iMovie 7.1.4. Sony says I need info from Apple. Can anybody help??

I am not sure your method is the right one when using Streamclip.
You are not supposed to open the .avi clip, just drag it onto Streamclip and drop it on the dotted square. Now you should see a view of the beginning of the clip within Streamclip. You don't need to play the clip there.
Now you select from the top menubar to 'Export to DV.'
When you tell Streamclip to 'export to DV' does a window come up asking where you want the dv clip saved?
I usually select 'desktop' so I can find it. It will have the same name as whatever your .avi's clip name is, but instead of the suffix .avi, it will be .dv.
When you see the clip converting, another smaller window of that clip, with somewhat jerky movements as the .avi clip is converting, should pop up automatically. Do you see that?
The Streamclip screen should show the beginning of your clip. It does not move and remains the same when the conversion is done. You should not be seeing a black screen there. In fact, I tried to make Streamclip give me a black screen and it would not do that at all.
Take that converted .dv clip and put THAT into your iMovie. (With iMovie 6, I just drag it in; not sure of the proper method with iMovie 9).
Is my description what you are doing and seeing?
Now, I should say that I have installed Apple's QuickTime MPEG component ($20): http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
Once installed, it works in the background and you don't have to do anything at all.
Maybe having it is what makes Streamclip work for me. If you are doing what I listed above and still not getting Streamclip to give you a converted clip, try getting the QT component and seeing if that helps. (Sorry I can't do anything about the $, but well-worth it if it solves the problem).
(Thanks for the compliment).....and yes, we women do like 'cute' cameras!
But, the information offered about yours on the sites I could find was really not helpful. You can find info about .avi that will explain better than I. Mainly, it is a container file that can have videos of different formats within it. Often, but not always, when camera specs are delineated, the specific format will be given, but I could find only one site once that gave MPEG-4 as your camera's video format. However, when I went back to find it again, I was not able to located it. Made me wonder if it is incorrect.....especially since iMovie 9 can recognize MPEG-4.

  • Getting Analog Video into iMovie

    Greetings,
OK, so I have successfully imported digital video into iMovie on several occasions with my "newer" video camera (a SONY DCR-TRV80).
Problem is, I have and older camera (a Canon ES800A) that uses 8mm tape. I've been wanting to get rid of the camera (a nice one for it's time) but, I have about 6 tapes worth of video that I'd like to at least permanently archive.
I suspect there is some hardware device out there that will allow me do to this - can anyone tell me would I need to be shopping for? (hoping it's not prohibitively expensive!)
    Any help would be appreciated!
Next up? - a camcorder with a hard disk!
    Thanks,
    Jim

Hi : I have a related problem maybe you could help me with....I've got about 6 Beta tapes [ remember them ? ] that I'd like to transfer to DVD while there still viewable. About 4 hours of tape on each....
I have an Optura 20 DV [Canon] and a Beta tape machine. The optura 20 manual says you should be able to run the RCA plugs out of the Beta unit into the AV jack on the Optura, then FW out into I - Movie. OR you can record onto a DV tape, then into IMovie. I've had no luck with either method. No Beta material shows on the DV monitor no matter what I do. It does play into a standard T.V from Beta, so I know the tape AND the Beta machine are working.
Do I need something like that Canopus Converter ? ....don't know if that' s the exact name .
    Any suggestions appreciated...Thanks

  • Where can I SAFELY get download to import youtube video into iMovie?

I posted this in the iMovie section and have not gotten a reply, so I'm hoping you guys can help:
Cnet seems to have some programs that would meet my need to get youtube video into iMovie, but a search on the safety of cnet downloads reveals that many people claim to have gotten malware from there.  The last thing I'd want is to get anything bad on my brand new Air!  Would be grateful for suggestions from various people on a) what program to use b) where to safely download it.  Thank you in advance for helping.

just to be clear: that plugin is for Firefox, not Safari
after installation and relaunch of Firfox, you'll notice the spinning three balls, IF the plug-in recognizes 'downloadable' content - here: a youtube video.
clicking on that (very) tiny, grey triangle offers you some download options (in your language) ....

How do I import video into iMovie using Mac the Ripper? I ripped the video content onto my computer but it was not converted into a file that I can import.

I think it's trend for all users since we can get more funny from digital life. Also it's necessary sometimes for us to save our video or dvd files with other methods, i have no idea but use something like converters. To my experience, mactheripper is not what you want, maybe you can try this dvd ripper for mac.Maybe ripper is illegal, but i just get my oringinal files, and i want to do more with it, that's just it!

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

  • I imported an hour of video into iMovie HD and cut it down to a 33 sec clip, and emptied the trash.  When I save the project, the file size is 20Gb.  How can I save just the 33 sec clip?

I imported an hour of video into iMovie HD and cut it down to a 33 sec clip, and emptied the trash.  When I save the project, the file size is 20Gb.  How can I save just the 33 sec clip?

Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

  • Embedding video into imovie

Can anyone tell me if imove embeds video into imovie project, or does is always need to find the video file to play it?
    thanks

    fryedmeb,
I'm not sure if I completely follow your question, but I'll take a stab at it.
What appears as a single iMovie project file is really a package containing all the necessary media for the project. Video clips, audio clips etc.
It also contains a reference file with instructions on how all the pieces get put together to form the project.
But, at the iMovie project stage, all the media are discrete pieces. "Unembeded" so to speak.
Once you output (Share) your iMoive to, say, a full quality DV QuickTIme file, the movie is then rendered as one self contained file.

  • DI imported an mpeg4 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and the Precision Editor is grayed out and I can't edit.  Why??

I imported an mpeg34 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and I am unable to edit it.  Precision Editor and Clip Trimmer are grayed out.  Any idea why this is happening?

Did you get any joy with answering this?
My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files  in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.
