Video distorted on TV

I'm getting a distorted image of videos on the TV. Both nano and universal dock with component AV cables were bought 2 weeks back. I can hear sound perfectly but the image is heavily distorted.
TV Out is enabled in the iPod and cables are firmly and correctly plugged in. I have tried connecting the component cable directly to the iPod and the image is the same. I have tried with different videos and with podcasts and the result is similar.
Here are photos to give you an idea.

I also can not see photos on the TV either even though TV Out is ON. Can someone help?

  • 1minute video distortion with iDVD-anybody encounter this?

I encountered a strange issue with a movie that I recently created in iDVD. Src was 1080i HD, downconverted to 720p and imported to iMHD, and then used within iDVD.
At about 53 minutes in the video (total ~1hr 40 min DVD encoded using Prof setting), there is a strange video distortion created - difficult to describe, but looks like say a 100x100 pixel movie upscaled to 720x480 with big blotches of color all over.
Src video imported to iDVD looks impeccable, and even if I recreated the DVD with diff src media at the 52minute mark, the distortion still shows up exactly for 1 minute around the 53 min (or 52.5 or 53.5 or 54 min) mark.
Really bugs me, as iDVD otherwise seems to do an OK job with the downconversion of the HD src file.
Anybody seen this odd behavior with iDVD? BTW, I burn to disc image, and both the image as well as the DVD show identical distortion at the same spot.

    Bengt,
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try trashing the iDVD pref file and re-do the disc image. I've already had to trash the iMovie pref file several times due to another bug there - I seem to have hit some max limit on # of cutaways+PIP inserts and it doesn't allow me to add another cutaway/PIP -- but that will have to be a different thread!
The file formats are the same throughout the movie - mixed HDV 1080i + AVCHD 1080i - and they are both downconverted to 720p using the native HD output format from iM09. All orig source and the 720p files look great without any artifacts. However, only the 1 min section as mentioned before has these really ugly blotchy artifacts when output from iDVD to 480i.
Unfortunately, I got the same artifacts/distortion at about the same point in the movie even if I tried a different iDVD theme (same movie length) or tried the output to Vid-TS folders...:-( This seems to point to a bug in the internal conversion to VOB...
I'll try your suggestion next - to trash iDVD pref and re-do the disc image again.
    Thanks!

  • Help!  Strange video distortion after importing film onto IPHONE.

So I used Compressor H.264 to create an .m4v file to play my film on an IPhone. For the most part it sounds and looks great. But in two separate spots this weird video distortion occurs in a part of the frame. It's like these large squares of video appear for a second or two, then disappear. The really strange part is that it's always in the same two spots. I tried re-compressing the file thinking it mignt be a problem in the pressing. Watching the files on my comp using Itunes or Quicktime player there is no distortion. But once the movie is synced onto the Iphone it's always the same result. Those wierd digital shifting cubes pop up at the exact same two spots. No matter how many times I re-compress. Any ideas? I'm at a loss and I gotta figure this out in the next few hours.

  • Video distortion when outputting to QT

I am running FCP 7.0.3 on a Macbook Pro. I am editing a sequence that is 1 hour and 48 minutes. The first image is text over a field of black, the second is a tif of a logo, and the third is video. When i try to Export a QT video using FILE / EXPORT / QUICKTIME MOVIE / 'Current Settings," when it gets to the video, there is a field of green, then some pixilated video distortion, then the video seems to flicker back and forth and go back a few frames like a stuck record. I notice that sometimes when I am playing the clip in my timeline, it tends to get a little bit "stuck" when it goes from the tif to the video. It seems to jump a few frames ahead, but there is no video distortion, that only shows up when i expert the entire video. I have also broken up the sequence in to shorter clips of about 15 minutes and the problem seems to go away. Any insight greatly appreciated.

When you converted the files in Clipwrap, what settings did you use?

Not that I am aware of*. H.264 is problematic in FCP7. You either convert the footage to an FCP edit friendly format prior to editing, or you end up in your situation and do so on the timeline.
    I am using a Sony HXR-NX5U camera shooting at 1080i at 30fps,
Do you mean 1080i at 29.97 fps?
    * If you still have the files that are 15 minute subsections of the full clip, use QuickTime 7 to copy and paste them together into  a complete file, and save that file. In QT7,  Open the all the subclips as separate QTs, then in the second movie, select the entire movie, copy it, and then go to the first movie and move the playhead to the end of the clip and the paste the copied 2nd movie into the first. Repeat as necessary. No guarantees.

  • 1280x720 Screen Video Distorted

    Dear readers,
    I have the following problem:
    1. I recorded a screen video with an inexpensive software at work and want to edit it in FCE HD. The resolution is 1280 x 720
    2. The files created are avi files and I use skysoft converter to convert them to 1280 x 720 .mov files.
    3. I import them to FCE HD and when looking at the inspector, I see that the resolution is 1280 x 720.
    4. When I drag them into a new sequence (720p as project setting and sequence setting) I get a letterboxed view in the canvas, leaving left and right with black stripes. I can only correct this by distort the image and set aspect ratio to -38 and then scale the video again.
Why is the video distorted, although the aspect ratio seems to be the same? What am I doing wrong? I want to create the video for youtube and viewing on the computer.
Any help appreciated! Thanks a lot.

Sorry for the bad question! I found that the screen resolution of the monitor where the files were recorded initially was set to 1280 x 1024...

  • Blue and white G3 video distortion

just wondering if anyone has ever seen this before...
someone gave me a blue and white G3 and it turned it on.. started up no problem...
i shut down the computer, opened it up, added ram, and started it up again... when it gets the the "starting mac os x" screen the video looks like it's been through a paper shredder. i figured it was bad ram or something so i put it back to the way it was just to see if it still had the same problem. i continued to get this kind of video distortion until i reset the PRAM.
so basically, it doesn't matter whether i start up from the hard drive, a mac os x cd, or a mac os 9.1 cd... same distorted video if the computer has not been started up while resetting PRAM. every time you restart it, you have to do it or you get the weird video.... anyone familiar with this? it's really strange.

it's weird.. because this is the stock ATI 128 rage card that comes with a G3 and i'm using it with the 15 inch studio display flat panel (the really early one, that is the same colors as the G3). i'm not using any adapters to connect the display. no matter what i set the resolution to, it always does this when i restart. only when i reset the PRAM will it actually look normal. even if i boot a CD without resetting the PRAM i get the same video distortion... is there some weird issue with this display and this video card? doesn't seem like there would be since this display was released during the time that this G3 was the top of the line apple desktop...

  • Video distortion at bottom of screen

I have just completed my first attempt at creating a DVD with Premiere Elements 9 but somehow I eneded up with a small line of video distortion that extends all the way across the bottom of the screen.  It's only about an 1/8" line but it appears throughout the entire video.   Does anyone know how to get rid of that?

  • Front Row Video Distortion

I have a new iMac intel 20" screen, and I downloaded some TV shows from iTunes and they are very distorted - the sound is fine, but the picture is not good quality. I have downloaded the latest Front Row update (1.2.2), but it really did not help. Is there a way to fix this? All of my dvds play fine...would it help to burn the shows to a dvd then play them? Or could I change the screen resolution or media player? thanks!

What do you mean by distorted? Does it appear blocky or is there rough movement in dark backgrounds?
When you view the video using the window in iTunes, does the video look better?
If it looks better in a smaller screen, remember that the shows at the iTMS are compressed for viewing on the iPod, and while most of them display fine on a television screen, they may not look as good on your iMac screen at full screen. I see a lot of blockiness in things like Battlestar Galactica when I play them full screen on my 17'' Apple Display connected to my G5, but the TV handles them fairly well when playing them from the Mini using Front Row.

  • Video Distortion - Hardware Failure?

I am experiencing some strange distortion of Flash videos on my mid-2010 17" MBP. It's a kind of random white noise (graphical only, no audio) that is always accompanied by a diagonal line. It appears to happen at random and cannot be duplicated by seeking back to the point in the video at which it first occurred. I normally use FireFox, but I also experience this issue when using Safari and it doesn't matter if I'm using the MBP display or an external monitor. What does seem to make a difference is switching back to the integrated graphics, I have yet to notice it with the Intel HD card enabled using gfxCardStatus.
The following videos show what I'm seeing, as recorded using the QuickTime screen recording feature. Has anyone else experienced this or is my NVIDIA GT330M dying?

I've known applications that stretch the hardware's capabilities, doing some odd things (Mostly around sound)
Recently I have come across a video game which take a video GPU to it's full capability with odd distorting.
I could only assume that whatever the application is requesting of the hardware, the hardware can't handle it.
Yet an identical computer running the same video game, with the same GPU worked fine.
The question I would ask, what is the difference between playing something back on FLV or VLC compared to flash/HTML5 on a web page? I could only come to the conclusion it's the hardware's response to the software's capability request.

  • [GeForce 6] Video distortion using KVM switches

When connected through a KVM switch the video quality from my main computer using a 128mb GF6800 from MSI becomes distorted, blurry, and the text very hard to read.  However, my second computer using a GF4 4200ti looks fine.
I thought it was a defective switch but I've tried 2 kvm switches from different manufacturers with different cables both with the same result.
Both computers are at 1280x1040 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate... changing the refresh rate nor the resultion helped.
However, when my main computer is connected directly to the monitor the video quality is fine... which makes me completely lost.  Is there anything I can do besides beating everything with a baseball bat??

was hoping there'd be a way to clear things up after getting use to using 2 computers at once
unfortunately can't fit an oldstyle monitor on the desk where i just moved to and can't afford another lcd :/

  • Ichat video distorted

When I use ICHAT the face of my 'buddy' distorts (looks like blurry strips that move across the face and then becomes clear only to become blurry again) It looks like her face is scarred however the background is clear (walls of the room etc). When I used ICHAT initially it was clear. The small video I see of myself is ok. My daughter says her screen is fine. Previously I logged on to an AIM account and I received a message it was possibly a fraudulent site. Could I be dealing with a virus? Or is it a settings issue? Its horrible to look at,,,any help would be appreciated!

    Hi,
Error 4 "Remote IP Invalid" means that her iChat is connected or can "see" more than one connection to the Internet.
In Leopard in System Preferences > Sharing having Internet Sharing On can cause this.
Connecting by Ethernet and Wifi can cause this - she will get an IP from her routing device for the Airport card and the Ethernet card separately.
Same if she uses a neighbour's Wifi Network.
Using Parallels in Leopard on an Intel Mac turns On Internet Sharing by default and creates to VNCs in System Preferences > Network which also need to be turned Off in the drop down. (In Parallels it needs to be set to get it;'s Own IP from the routing device.
Using a routing modem and a router can also cause it by creating overlapping LAN IP addresses.
We would need to know more about the devices she uses and how she set them up.
Makes and models with version numbers would help.

  • Youtube Video distorted/washed out in beginning

Seems that every video I make with Quicktime or Imovie in MP4, H.264 format and then upload to Youtube ends up with the beginning of the video washed out and distorted for the first 3 or 4 seconds. Then everything is OK.
Everything looks fine on my Mac.

    Don't know why....
<2. Will the black intro be removed during the conversion to FLV?>
Why would it be removed if it's part of the video?
<3. Will converting to FLV on my machine before uploading solve this problem?
    Probably not...........

  • Video Distortion after burning i.e. "tracing"

Hello all. I have been working on this project for a couple weeks now. I do a lot of "copy and paste" edits where people bring in dvd's and other media and want me to put together a demo disc or something of that sort. This high school student has brought me a bunch of basketball footage I have imported and created a nice dvd. While watching it in FCP and DVDSP the video looks fine. Once I push it to DVD there is a massive amount of distortion, in the form of "tracing" following the basketball players on the court, to the point where it has become nauseating. I have fooled around with my settings in DVDSP and have not been able to fix this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have my encoding setting set at Two Pass VBR
    Bit rate - 7.6
    Max Bit Rate 8.9
It is a short video compilation, maybe about 15-20 mins long
    Thanks in advance.

nothing quite so dramatic. We can't see it but I'm guessing you're seeing interlacing artifacts. My guess is that the interlacing got out of step somewhere. The easiest thing is just to make your video progressive out of compressor. then the DVD player can deal with it.
How are you getting your video from FCP to DVD SP? The ideal way is to go through compressor. And in there you can switch your rendered output to progressive, that is remove the interlacing. Of course it's a guess from here. I'd do a test of one of the tracks and put it back on the DVD and see what happens. You'll have to make sure you remove the old track from the DVD.

  • Aspect Ratios and Video Distortion

I am trying to take a video that was recorded at 1440x1080 and shrink it down to 192x144. When I currently do that, it extremely distorts the video. How do I avoid this?

    OK. Got it.
What I would do if I were you is create a sequence at that size, 192X64.
Bring your footage in and scale it down to fit in that little space. You might find that you pan around the larger frame instead of scaling it all the way down. For example, if you scaled it way down to about four times the size, you could show 1/4 of the frame, then another 1/4, then another, etc. Or, you could focus on the very best part of each frame. Kind of like zooming way in.
In this way, you will know exactly what it will look like upon export to 192X64.
This first image is actually a frame from a 1920X1080 video scaled down to fit the forum software requirements, The second image is what might look good on the matrix board.
Now, it doesn't look bad on my monitor, but how it will look on the scoreboard is something you will have to decide.
Keep in mind that with a ratio of 3 to 1, you really want to shoot your video very carefully to make the interesting parts a lot wider than they are tall. Shooting basketball players.... Well.... They better be laying on the court.

  • Problems watching movies on iTunes -- lagging video, distorted audio

Hello. I have a black MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) and iTunes 9.0.2, and I'm having some problems. It's been going on for a few weeks now, and is worse some days than others, but the overall trend has been downward, so I wanted to try to get some help before it gets any worse.
The problem occurs when I try to watch movies on iTunes. I haven't had any problems with any other aspect of iTunes, although I don't really use any other aspects of iTunes at the moment besides the iTunes Store (I don't listen to music through iTunes or anything). Anyways, here's the problem:
Sometimes, when I'm watching a movie on iTunes, it will randomly (or seemingly randomly) glitch on me. I use the general term "glitch" here because the problem can manifest itself in one of a few different ways:
1.) The picture will freeze for a quick moment (less than a second usually) and skip forward real quick to catch up, and then sometimes, after it does this, it will go back to normal and keep playing the movie correctly. Other times after it does this, however, it will continue playing the movie, but with lagging video. When I say "lagging video", I mean that the video is slowed down, as if in slow motion. The audio remains normal. This only seems to happen in full screen mode (although I don't really watch movies any other way), so when it happens, I can generally hit escape to go back to regular viewing mode and it will fix itself, although sometimes I have to quit out of iTunes and reopen it.
2.) On rare occasions, instead of the video lagging problem, the picture will freeze all together, and if I recall correctly, the application always freezes with it.
3.) Less commonly than the video problem, the audio will become distorted. This usually occurs separately from the video issue, but can occur simultaneously as well. When this happens, the audio gets really scratchy and distorted, as if it was being filtered through a low quality children's boom box microphone. iek the video problem, this problem occurs randomly in the middle of watching the movie, but unlike the video problem, this problem persists after I quit out of iTunes. Quitting iTunes does not fix the problem in this case, unlike with the video lagging. When I quit iTunes, the distorted audio remains an issue an any application I use, and I have to wait awhile for it to go away on its own. So, unlike the video lagging, this audio issue seems to exist outside of iTunes, although it always starts with iTunes.
Can anyone help me figure out what is going on here? I've looked for patterns in other applications that are open during the times these problems occur, but haven't found any. I do have Norton AntiVirus installed on my computer, and I did notice awhile ago that any time I try to watch a movie on iTunes while I have a virus scan going on, I always get a glitch on iTunes, so I stopped running those two applications at the same time a long time ago, but I still have the problem. Should I try reinstalling iTunes? If I do this, will I lose any of the music or movies or apps that are in iTunes? I would assume not, but I just want to make sure I don't need to back anything up if I want to reinstall iTunes.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Not sure why this question is labeled as "answered" since there are no answers in the thread?
I'm having the same issue with the extremely distorted audio track on itunes video. It's worst on the speech, which is hard to hear, garbled, a lot of scratchy noise overtop of it; the music tracks are somewhat better (and much much louder). This started a bit ago and was intermittent at first, now very bad, can;t get rid of it.
I have a lot of itunes video, and since it is all protected, to my knowledge it is not playable through any other player... so this is a real problem. Reinstalling itunes (9.2.1) did not help. Sometimes VLC also distorts sound (on other video), more often that's fine but itunes is not.
I would love to have a solution to this-- my video library is not much use.
