Video distortion on new 640x480 videos?

Has anyone had any distrotion with videos bought from iTunes after sept 12th's announcement? I bought one of Panic at the Disco's videos, and it seems to have this type of distortion all through out the video. I was able to see this in the preview, but I thought there mightve been something wrong with the preview clip, and not the actual video. Take a look at the screen shots below.

Is there any way I might get a refund, or get apple to let me download the video again without this distrotion?
Compaq Windows XP

Last night, I decided to go back and repurchase a handful of my favorite Music Videos to get the higher-quality 640x480 resolution. What I discovered is disturbing to say the least - while all videos are now 640x480 (and much larger size) many, if not most of the music videos I downloaded were not re-encoded from the original source, so the quality is no better!
Here's just a sampling of what I found:
- Anastacia: Left Outside Alone 17MB (320x240 purchased Feb 2006); now: 45.7MB (640x480)
- Anastacia: One Day in Your Life 17.2MB (320x240 purchased Feb 2006); now: 38.8MB (640x480)
- Anastacia: You'll Never Be Alone 22.2MB (320x240 purchased Feb 2006); now: 46.4MB (640x480)
All three of these original music videos were encoded with a low sound level. The new videos are significantly better quality and the sound problems have been corrected. Clearly they were re-encoded from the high-resolution source. This is what I expect, especially if I am re-purchasing content. Of interest, two of the three videos have different poster frames, and one has a different copyright date.
- Madonna: Sorry 24.9MB (320x240 purchased April 2006); now: 55MB (640x480)
This one is particularly troubling, because a side-by-side playback comparison the new video is worse quality, showing significant artifacts on some scenes (especially around her eyes). Clearly this was just a bad up-sample conversion of the 320x240 material, resulting in worse quality than the up-sample on playback of the original, smaller file.
- Blue: Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word 18.9MB (320x240 purchased October 2005); now: 40.6MB (640x480)
A side-by-side playback shows that this was a bad up-sample conversion of the 320x240 material, and the new larger file is slightly worse quality with "stair-stepping" effects on diagonals.
In summary, while it appears that some content has been properly re-encoded from the high-resolution source material, much (if not most?) of the content is a bad upsample. Why Apple didn't just leave this material in the original, smaller file is beyond me. It would have made it easer to determine what's worth re-purchasing!
For now, unless there is an obvious indication (the new poster frames for example) I would avoid re-purchasing video content from the iTunes store.

  • Has anyone gotten the new 640x480 videos to work?

Has anyone gotten the new videos to transfer to their ipod? Mine keeps saying that they are not supported by ipod. Also does anyone know what bitrate for video is now supported?

On Tuesday I updated my 8 month old video iPod with 1.2. This morning I successfully transferred Mulan I downloaded off iTunes and played it out to a normal TV. I did not see any compression artifacts that I would normally see from the previously downloaded TV shows such as Battlestar Galactica. This probably means that it has the more updated resolution.

  • Graphic Distortion on new MacBook Air (2013)

I have noticed over the last couple of days that my new mid-2013 MacBook Air has been waking up from sleep with a brief graphic distortion (about a second) and then is normal. I do connect it to a projector at work using a Mini-DP to VGA adapter. Any solutions or thoughts?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • When we connect external LCD display colors get distorted, a NEW problem

We have used an Envision external LCD monitor with this iBook for one year with no problems, and now suddenly when we connect it to the iBook the colors are all way distorted (no red, or all blue), on both the iBook display and on the external monotor. When we disconnect the external monitor the colors on the iBook display return to normal. HELP!!!! What could be causing this?
    Thank you!

Changing the adaptor cable solved the problem.

  • Do your MP3s play back with digital clicks and distortion on new iPad?

I have thousands of MP3s encoded to 192 in my iTunes library that have played flawlessly on my iPods, iPhone, first-gen iPad and Macs with no problems. All the MP3s played back on my third-gen iPad (ATT 4G) randomly have clicks and digital distortion through them. These clicks and distortions don't always happen in the same place and not always with the same file. This points to a problem with the iPad. Anyone else having this problem?

    Thought I may as well post some additional photos consisting of my iPad compared to my sisters iPad 4;
Mine is the top iPad, sisters is the bottom iPad.
    Close-up of my sisters iPad, same side;
The camera doesn't capture the full glory of the back-light bleeding, you can just imagine how much worse and more apparent it would be to the human eye!
(With these images, I have enchanced the brightness so it's more apparent)

  • Iphoto '11 v. 9.3.2 (670.73) distorts my full HD videos

Hello! That's right, after moving to OS X moutain lion and applied novel updates to Iphoto, the program distorts my new uploaded videos. Does any body have the same problem? However, this problemm seems happening watching the videos in Iphoto, I mean, does not occur in quick time for example. I hope apple releases a new update to fix this problem...I like to watch my videos and photos in Iphoto.
    Cheers!

The sub folder feature is available in iPhoto 9.4.3.  I don't know about the earlier iPhoto 9 (11) versions. If you installed iPhoto from the iLife 11 disk you will have installed iPhoto 9.0 or 9.1.  You can use the following updaters to get to 9.4.3:
    1 - update to iPhoto 9.2.1
    2 - update to iPhoto 9.3
    3 - update to iPhoto 9.3.2
    4 - update to iPhoto 9.4
    5 - and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3

  • Help Please - my downloaded videos do not work on Ipod !

Can someone help please - my ipod has stopped playing videos back - I have downloaded some video podcasts and a couple of music videos, and all you see is the first screen, however the voice is fine?
    Help please!

Have you update your ipod to firmware 1.2 yet? My guess is the videos you download are in the new 640x480 format which only updated ipod can play.

  • "Choppy" Video but fine music

Hello, I recently downloaded the video "How to save a life" from the band The Fray. The music plays perfectly through itunes but the video is very choppy maening that it rolls about a second or two of video, pauses for a second, then continues for a second or two and os on and so on throughout the entire length of the video. The music never skips a beat. This is the first time I have downloaded a video so is it may a setting or something? I have the latest version of Itunes that i just downloaded specifically to watch this video. I am not sure if it is defective in Itunes system or was the video produced that way? (hard to believe because it is as annoying as **** to watch) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Do you have a fairly newer (eg, fast) machine? Plenty of free RAM? Vvideos from iTunes are encoded in the H.264 codec, which takes a lot of processing power to play - particularly the new 640x480 resolution files from iTunes. I don't know what is a good speed for windows, but my sister's 3 year old Dell (3Ghz Pentium 4 desktop) plays them OK. The audio on the iTunes videos are 128kbps AAC files, which don't take that much processor to play.
I know, however, that my 1.67 G4 Powerbook can play iTunes videos just fine, but my 400mhz PowerMac G4 can't - it shows exactly the same symptoms (frame dropping) you describe - but the video will freeze after the first frame. This is playing the old 320x240 resolution videos, BTW. I don't know what these speeds translate to in the Intel processors, however.
    Good luck,
    -Dan

  • Anyway to delete a point midway on line without distorting existing profile?(images of problem)

I made a long line with a complex stroke profile. I decided to remove a section, but it distorts the new ends with the excess profile. How can I delete a mid point on a line and keep the profile visually intact?

And do note there will be overlapping and extra nodes once expanded. These can be cleaned up (removed) if the cause issues.
Here is a recreation of the problem end of your design, expanded with the portion removed.
    Take care, Mike

  • What IS the point?

If you buy a film from iTunes it's at 640x480 (one third the quality of full HD - exactly).
And, any footage from your 1080i camcorder isn't able to import onto the ATV without being reduced in resolution (reading these forums).
There's no easy/legal way to import DVDs/Blu-Rays into your Mac, so what on earth is the point?
A £200 limited Airport Express. Doesn't even do 1080p, so not very future proof. Also, if you buy a movie from iTunes at their new 640x480 sub-DVD standard, can that import into an iPod? Equally, if you have an HD video, can that be on your iPod as well as the ATV? I tried to rip a DVD so that it would nice a watchable on the Mac and also for the iPod but could only get the iPod quality to work on the iPod.
This means, as far as i've understood that you can't have video at HD on your iPod (at it's native res) to watch?
    Please clarify someone

The point is, this is the first step in the future of delivering/watching content.
Sure, this box isn't 'true' HD, but remember, this is the first box of its kind. It'll only get better from here.
Right now, I'm watching the third season of Battlestar Galactica purchased from the iTunes store, and while it's not HD, I'm quite happy with how it looks, which is no better or worse than what I'd get on standard cable TV.
Everyone who purchase this box is an early adopter. I'm in that category. I'm willing to spend the money on new technologies knowing full-well that new devices may not be perfect right out-of-the gate.

  • 4 x3, 16 x 9, and DVD Players

I have a 4 x 3 sequence. When I export to MPEG 2 through Compressor and make a DVD through DVD Studio Pro, everything is fine......when I play the DVD on a 4 x 3 TV, everything is great.
But when I play the same DVD on a 16 x 9 modern TV, each TV that I've tested will automatically "blow up" the 4 x 3 footage to fill the entire 16 x 9 frame of the TV, thus degrading my footage....
Is there any solution to this besides changing the TV settings? Because on some of the modern TVs that I've tested it on, we couldn't even find the setting to switch the TV settings to 4 x 3. Any answers to this minor problem?

To make a 4:3 setting look good on a 16:9 set, do this. (1) In FCP, create a new anamorphic sequence. (2)Place your 4:3 sequence or clips into this new sequence. If it doesn't automatically "pillar box" all of the clips, select one that is pillar boxed>copy: paste attributes- distort only, and copy to the rest of the cliups on the tome line. Altenatively, put the clip(s) in the browser>motion tab>distort set to 33.33. (3) export via compressor using wide screen best quality (no need to render first). (4) import the m2v video file into DVDSP and place on track. select 16:9 pan and scan. this will create a DVD that plays normally on a 4:3 TV and is pillar boxed without distortion on newer 16:9 sets. Caveat; make sure your DVd player is set correctly for the type of TV you're outputting to.

  • Venture brothers duplicate episodes?

I was browsing through the tv shows section of the music store just a bit ago and noticed the venture brothers! I was excited, as I love this show, so I clicked and started looking.
It appears as if there are 9 episodes from the second season listed, however, they are all listed twice. I thought maybe this was some as-of-yet unfixed bug with the new 640x480 videos (as if the old, lower resolution videos were up alongside the new highres ones) but I don't see any other shows like this.
Is there a reason they're doubled up? Is there any difference between the pairs of shows? I'd hate to buy them all and end up with the wrong ones... and I surely don't want to buy duplicates of each show
    Thanks!

I would report the mistake to iTunes support. They will likely give you credit for the messed up episode and tell you to wait a few weeks before trying to download the episode again. The networks make mistakes. Way back on one of the early seasons of the Office, there was a duplicate episode just like you mentioned. It was fixed many months later.

  • I just purchased a new macbook pro 13" and my music videos that I've downloaded from itunes are distorted and choppy!

I'm having issues after downloading certain songs that they are choppy while trying to play them through itunes or quicktime. I just bought my macbook pro and am dissappointed in it's inability to do a simple task like replay downloaded music videos. It's only certain videos and it happens at the same point everytime. I thought it was a energy saver setting at first or something to do with itunes but I've tried playing it in quicktime and it did the same thing. Did my downloaded videos get corrupted? because they work just fine on my ipad.

  • I have old IPad and down load new software. It completely distort my ITune set up. I use to have audio and video in the ITune, now it's separated audio and video in different category. And I can not set group or alphabetical tap to pull out video.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.
