Video Editing- Correcting Flipped Film
Help, I have some 8mm cine film which has been converted to digital video but some of the sequences have been reversed - although the footage runs in the correct direction car registrations and text are the mirror image. (i.e. the negative/film has been flipped and converted to digital).
Apart from recapturing the footage is there any way of correcting this in iMovie or Final Cut?

I went into it and searched for imovie but couldn't find the basic imovie, which I presume is what I'd need for editing?, rather than imovie 11 for £10.49, which is for making trailers, it seems. Hi everyone! I downloaded CS6 for a graphic design class that I was taking. I later found out that you could edit videos with the essentials portion of CS6 since it no longer has to be extended like in CS5. I went to import some videos from bridge and bridge would not allow me to do so. I also tried to open the files in Photoshop and I as I was looking at the type of files that I could open like quicktime files, wmv., mov., etc., I could not find anything relating to opening videos. The only thing that showed up were types of image files to open. Did I buy a faulty version of this program? Is there a way to get the video editing feature back on here or do I have to breakdown and buy Photoshop essentials separately?

I regularly work with video editing and I'm looking for a new monitor, my budget is not very high so I need to do a good choice.
For me the most important thing is image quality, I need a monitor I can trust the colors.
I was thinking of getting a DELL monitor because I always heard good things about them.

Depends on what your output will be. If you are only going to show your video on the web, then a computer monitor that you can get a good calibration on should do fine. Calibration buys you a defined working space -- a solid neutral axis, no color casts, known edges of gamut, proper contrast, etc. All monitors will vary from this to some degree, but your calibrated monitor will show you the median, which is what you want for WYSIWYG work. So the people looking at your web videos will see something pretty close to what you intended.
OTOH, if you output will be DVD / BD, or broadcast TV, few computer monitors will show you the correct working space, which for HDTV is Rec.709. If you want WYSIWYG, you'll have to have Rec.709, there's no real way around it. This will take a production monitor (or an expensive computer monitor -- a couple of the Eizos can do this, and the HP Dreamcolor if it's still in production), which is considerably more expensive than a computer monitor. Low end production monitors start around 10x your budget, largely because they are made in much smaller numbers than computer monitors, and have much higher specifications; they just cost more to make.
If you want to output for a film print, you're talking real money. It's been awhile; I don't remember what the "standard" film working space is called, and of course it will vary somewhat depending on the film stock and the film recorder being targeted. But making a film print for distribution is sort of a silly thing to do these days.
A better path would be to a DCP (digital cinema package) which requires the CIE XYZ color space. There are monitors that support this too, and way beyond most budgets, save those of post-production houses.
If you are stuck with your budget and still want to author DVDs, about the best you can do is use a decent computer monitor, use the sRGB (not Adobe RGB or any wider gamut working space), calibrate it (without calibration you've got little hope of WYSISYG), and bump your contrast up to approximate Rec.709. Then work primarily off your scopes (waveform monitor, vectorscope, RGB parade) and not primarily off what you see. Burn a DVD / BD, and iterate making corrections and burning discs until you get what you want. It's an imprecise and much slower workflow, but it's doable in a budget pinch.
EDIT: You might also want to pick up a copy of Van Hurkman's Color Correction Handbook. Does a much better job explaining what you need than I can possibly do. And it's a wonderfully accessible tour of color correction. Answers questions you haven't thought to ask yet. At least, it does for me. -
Powerful laptop for video editing?
Sometimes people ask what laptop to buy for video editing. My laptop has the following specification.
1 gigabyte graphics memory (NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M)
Intel core i7 3632qm CPU (quad core, 2.2 GHz with maximum 3.2 GHz).
5400 RPM hard drive in two partions C: and D:
6 gigabytes with RAM
I use Windows 8.1, with Windows settings for maximum performance.
I have spent more than 200 hours editing a project which is about 110 minutes long.
RAM, graphics card respectively CPU have been no limitation. But my hard drive must often work hard.
Partition C: became full with media cache files since my project is so big. So in the future I will put the media cache files on partition D: For this project I solved the problem by deleting those media cache files which were no longer needed.
Alright, I have been forced to split up my long project into smaller pieces. So I have projects which each contains a few hours with raw material, out of which there is about 10 minutes on the timeline. For each project I export a video file. These files I import into another project where I join them into one video file which is 110 minutes long.
I find it inconvenient when PE 12 needs more than one minute to load a particular project. This is the reason why I split up my long project into smaller pieces.
To avoid confusion, I never use video transitions. And I only use video effects when I am forced to correct poor footage. So in each project there is at most about a minute of footage to be rendered. I mean, even though I don't render, PE 12 works well.

No, I have not monitored CPU usage because it is the hard drive which limits how fast my laptop works.
There is one advantage with having a track for video expanded rather than collapsed. One can see what one has already put on the timeline without moving the cursor. If one waits until the computer has generated pictures on the timeline.
But I realized that with my laptop one has to wait uncomfortably long for those pictures to be created. So it is faster to move the cursor to that position where I have guessed that I have already put the footage I want to find.

I have not tested multiple monitors. Neither would I bother if CPU usage increased because it is the hard drive, not the CPU, which limits how fast my laptop works.

I have not used Premiere CC so I have not checked the hardware requirements.
Unless I have misunderstood something, Premiere CC has somewhat higher hardware requirements than Premiere Elements. Understandable since professional camcorders use higher bit rate (more information per second) than cheaper camcorders.
So presumably I would be forced to split up my projects in even smaller parts to make everything manageable. On the other hand, using footage which is intra frame compressed rather than inter frame compressed would mean that the hardware needs to work less hard, so perhaps it would be possible to edit long projects.
At the same time, some professional programs can work with proxy files, and in that case the high bit rate for professional footage would be no problem.
Besides, unless something is wrong with my memory, Edius has somewhat lower hardware requirements than Premiere CC, so possibly that program would be more relevant for usage on my laptop.
Higher bitrate means that there is room for fewer hours with raw material on my single hard drive. So with 100 Mbps I would in practice be limited to creating movies which are at most about 40 minutes long.
One advantage with professional video editing software is that it can edit video with higher resolution than 1920*1080. But I doubt that would work on my laptop.

Yes it works. And after posting in another forum in my native language, another film maker commented that he had edited on a laptop with even less powerful CPU. For him it was also the speed of the hard drive which limited how fast his laptop worked. -

As listed, that build is barely adequate for even 1440x1080 HDV material due to its mediocre CPU (a quad-core CPU with no Hyper-Threading) and weak GPU (the GTX 550 Ti is actually slower than a GTX 650 despite its higher memory throughput). In addition, do not get an Apevia PSU! That so-called "500W" unit can barely handle even 300W without severely damaging your PC's components. Third, you really need more than one disk to handle anything above SD DV since a single SATA connection cannot handle simultaneous reads and writes (which all NLEs require). As a result, even with MPE GPU acceleration enabled that build would have been at least five times slower than a fast desktop PC, and may not perform all that stably due to the issues with the PSU. -

I have just started to video edit and need a new machine. As of now I have a late 2006 black MacBook. It is very slow and lags in iMovie. I am considering getting a ssd but I know that won't help entirely. I will use this machine to run final cut pro x or possible final cut 7. I will also be doing stuff involving special effects and what not. I am still new too this stuff. I love film and want to make a couple short films. I am going to college for history and communicatins and want to get my noise wet before hand. Would you consider a Mac mini good for a starter and something that will last a couple of years. Also what model. I want to put a ssd in it and want to know of toi is hard to do. I want quad core so I am looking into the server model. Is the server worth the money? Please don't tell me to get an iMac I don't like them. The glossy screen hurts my eyes and besides I have a grat set up. I have a 23" apple cinema display, keyboard, mouse, and magic trackpad. Or do you think I should get a 15" MBP.
I went to the Apple Store last night after work to by the Mac Mini, but they wanted to charge me an extra £80 compared to the online price. I wanted the 1gb memory upgrade and apparently they was going to charge me for the 500mb they would have to take out to put the 1gb in.
So guess what, I didn't buy it. I've got the order placed online though. Can't wait for it to be delivered, should be about 7 days apparently. -

I hope I am in the correct computer category. I have a PowerPC G5 OSX 10.5.8. I have a lot of video editing that I would like to do, but don't have a program. I can't afford to buy a new computer, but would like to know if anyone has suggestions on what versions of Final Cut, or any other editing program would work on my computer.
Thanks.Budgetary restraints would push me to suggesting looking on eBay etc for Final Cut Express 3.5. It's the previous version of this software, and some say better than the current version.
If you do need more than FCE, you could also look for Final Cut Pro 5.0/5.1, which would likely do anything you'd need, for much less than the shelf price of the latest Final Cut Studio at an Apple dealer. -
What Macbook Pro to get for video editing?
For software like adobe after effects cs5, what macbook would be the best, I have pretty limited money so is the base model ok? if not whitch one works well?
Thanks!The top end non-retina, 15" anti-glare is the best. SSD preferred, has a Superdrive. RAM and hard drive upgradable later by the user.
The retina has a glossy screen which is hard on the eyes and using in various places, it's battery life is terrible and the images are not correct as it's blowing things up to mach the higher pixel rate. No Superdrive. You can't open the machine up, you can't clean the fans of dust you can't upgrade it later, you will have to max it out at purchase for a small fortune and go way over budget. Plus there really isn't too much difference in the quality of the screen with regular MBP's anyway, just eats battery life to drive that huge pixel screen. You'll be replacing it a lot sooner than the standard 15"
Don't waste your money on the 13", it lacks a dedicated graphics, the CPU does it thus it's HOT. Won't 3D game well if your also into play.

Actually the MacPro is the perfect choice of power and performance for video editing, with it's substancial cooling. But you want a laptop , just know things will take longr and the machien will be hotter as a result and wear out sooner if your doing 3D gaming or video often. -
Hello, I've decided not to wait for an Intel MacPro, but would like to buy a G5 in the next 5 mos (by July) for standard-definition video editing using FCP 5 Studio. I have a few questions:
1) Currently, I have a Quicksilver G4 with dual 1 Gz, 1 Gb ram and 160 Gb ATA drive. Would FCP 5 Studio work effectively on this machine (for editing, color-correction, motion graphics, rendering to DVD etc)? If not, is it worth investing more money into this machine, or should I switch to a G5?
2) Which G5 would work effectively for my purposes? Kindly advise on clock-speed, RAM, Video card, hard disk etc. I take it I will not need RAID for SD, but only high-definition? I would need to use this machine for at least 3 years. Do you see Apple discontinuing hardware or FCP support for this platform during this time?
3) How would the 23" screen be for video-editing? Are there any rumors about a 25" screen replacing it?
4) Lastly, are there any Apple conventions in the next 6 mos (where new products could be announced), which I should wait for, before purchasing?

Get a Quad and get one fast, with a PPC machine you'll have lots of media copying freedom as you have control over your hardware. With the new EFI Mactels, trusted computing and HDCP coming you will not.
Actually I wouldn't waste money on a PowerMactel machine until the whole "Blueray/HD-DVD" thing gets straightened out too, that's going to have a lot of baggage associated with it. When they do at least you'll have a Quad to be able to do things you won't be allowed on the PowerMactel w/BlueRay.
Standard definition is going "bye-bye" in the US mandatory by 2009, mostly by 2007. You'll need to go HD as all the new TV sets being sold are HD/digital ready and all the content will switch as well. (HD Is really nice too, but eats hard drive space fast)

Yes sure, but if time = money, you'll need CPU muscle to render faster and large RAM to burn faster.
I say get a PPC Quad, a large stock drive with 16MB of cache and a Western Digital 150GB 10,000 RPM RaptorX for a boot/app and "bare bones" home drive, keeping your video on the large stock drive. Get yourself 4Gb of RAM or slightly more, install it yourself and save money by visiting Crucial.com. (no comp)

Apple will support PPC based hardware for a long time, so will a lot of third party software makers because it's the majority platform. Not much software is available for the Mactel based machines, so PPC and the Quad is the best longterm professional choice at this time. I would also not get the stock card but the next one up.
RAID you can play with later, rolling your own mini-raid set or if you have volume and require speed then a X-RAID.
3) How would the 23" screen be for video-editing? Are there any rumors about a 25" screen replacing it?
I had a 23", it's small, but it will do the job. A couple of inches increase won't make much of a difference IMO. If you got the bucks get a 30", it's awesome and better than two monitors as you don't need to turn your head back and forth. Just sit back and take it all in.
Of course for standard video your going to need a standard monitor anyway for previewing.
4) Lastly, are there any Apple conventions in the next 6 mos (where new products could be announced), which I should wait for, before purchasing?
We just had one, Macworld, where the Mactels were announced, supposely Intel will release a 64 bit dual core around September, Adobe Photoshop supposely won't be ready with a Mactel version for another 14 months it's been estimated.
Apple is working on universal versions of their apps, some are ready already.

Best Monitors for Video editing?
Hey guys. I'm looking at an NEC monitor for editing my stills, and am wondering if this will be suitable for video editing?
Models I'm considering are:

These monitors are great for stills, as they cam emulate paper types well, but do I need a more "vibrant" monitor for video? Just worried that my video will look a bit off on these monitors, as it's such a different medium?

Just seems like NEC isn't playing up their video editng credentials, and I wonder why?

I am a traveller, and photographer, so my style is pretty much travelling, capturing scenery and cutting video and music together, with the skill to do interesting chops, transitions etc that give off a certain feel, mood and passion like the video above.
I have the DSLR gear for video, as I have been doing photography for several years, the very basic skills to edit simple clips together in Premiere Pro, but I would like to work with sound, faster chops, transitions, I want to take it to a more deeper level, so I can create films like that video above.

I have tried a few, but I get incredibly dry of motivation in tutorials when they are not really relevant (like learning to cut an interview when I want to create films like the above, etc)Are you talking about the art of editing, as opposed to the mechanics? I believe the art -- trying to visualize what you want to see -- comes before the mechanics of how to do it, and most app-specific tutorials are about the mechanics and leave out the art.

For video editing, I will be using both Final Cut Pro 7, and Adobe CS5.

Thank you very muchIt will render much faster on the new quad cores then any other MBP ever made. This new release is really a pretty major deal in the laptop world to my thinking. If I didn't just get a new iMac, I would be probably getting one. I don't do a lot of video and I use FCE not Pro so my need isn't as great, but I do a lot of photography and with several things open at once so the power matched with sufficient ram is pretty amazing. But is it absolutely a must? I had a friend who just until this year was a film music editor and he was using Pro Tools on a G4 Power Book though he had to start working around the machine limitations at the end of the day, but it is possible. Still for the money, the new machines are a great deal at pretty much the same price as what they are replacing. I know I'm advocating here, but I'm just a user not and employee:)
