Video editing: Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt, or usb 3?

Not sure which cable to buy for optimal performance from an external hard drive. Suggestions?

By the way, for a single hard drive, it will not matter very much. Firewire 800 is sufficient, and USB3 and Thunderbolt are overkill. To get the advantage of the faster channel speeds, you need a Raid setup with the more disks the better.

    does the speed go down?
I got a harddisk with firewire 800 out and my mbp retina doesn't have a firewire 800 fit.
I saw the adapter from firewire 800 to thunderbolt. but do you still keep the speed that firewire 800 has?

If your disk and Mac both have USB 3.0, the disk will run faster on USB than on Thunderbolt to FireWire.
    R/W disk speeds:
USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt about equal at ~110 MB/s
Firewire about half at ~60 to ~70 MB/s
    USB 2.0 about a third at ~35 to ~40 MB/s

  • Firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter for MBA

Anyone know about an adapter for a firewire 800 to thunderbolt, that is available now?

I've been searching for such a device too. I need to perform a data transfer to MBA from a MBP and FW800 drive. For now, I can hook it up to a MBP and use AirDrop or simple wireless transfer...
This site keeps news on new peripherals: http://thunderboltreviews.com/
The Belkin Dock looks promising, but still expensive. Simple adapters are still aways and the first ones out are going to cost a pretty penny still (~$30-$40 is my guess). The dock from Belkin may be worth the cost in that sense. Except it seems to need an external power source.
Sigh, Thunderbolt hasn't really come out with a bang, but just more of a sizzle...sorry for the pun.
Someone had come up with a concept Apple Thunderbolt Pro Display. It was pretty cool. Built-in discrete graphics card, bluray superdrive, and all the ports you would ever need (among other things). Oh how I wish Apple would be willing to build such a thing.
Anways, let me know if you find a simple TB to FW800 adapter.

  • HT201338 Can I connect a firewire 400 to firewire 800 adapter and then a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter(standard Thunderbolt to firewire adapter) together to digitize video from a miniDV video camcorder?

I have a 10 year Canon MiniDV camcorder that I used to connect via firewire to digitize the data.  Now my IMac only has a Thunderbolt connector and my camcorder uses the older firewire 400 standard.  I would like to digitize the video into my IMac.  How can I do this?

I did a little looking around and found a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter, and then a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter, but no Thunderbolt to Firewire 400. Amazon and Apple stores had the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable and Amazon had the Firewire 400 to 800 adapater.
Wherever you get the cables, ask them if it will work OK with what you want to try and do - if they don't know make sure you can return if there is a problem. I think it will because the Thunderbolt side is so much faster than what the camera can pump out to it. If it were the other way (Thunderbolt device to a Firewire computer I would expect that to fail since the Firewire could never keep up with the data rate of the incoming Thunderbolt device).
Maybe if you have a local Mac user group or a friend with an older mac with a firewire 400 port you could do it this way too?
    Good luck

  • How to go from Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt to HDMI? Which one is the most efficient?, How to go from Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt to HDMI? Which one is the most efficient?

I have no HDMI port on my macbook, but only Thunderbolt and FireWire 800, and I need to connect to my digital TV that requires an HDMI port.

Hello, thanks for your rapid answer.
    I have a macBook Pro (15"), with a Intel 2,3Ghz Core I7. 4Go 1700 Mhz DDR3. NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 Mo, and OS X 10.8.4.
I have the following ports: FireWire 800, Thunderbolt, USB 3 (x2), SDXC card slot, audio In and audio out (headphones).
I bought a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to HDTV Cable (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22742775?ac_cid=op123456#22742775)
I have an HD TV from LG 32LH3000, with 3 HDMI inputs. I regularly use one of these HDMI input to watch movies, stored on an HDD.

  • Is there such a thing as a Firewire 800 Hub (like a USB hub)?

I'd like to have a firewire port "at the front" of a Mini, for easy attaching of a Camcorder-firewire line or other occasional-use Firewire devices. The one FW800 port at the back of the Mini has external hard-drive(s) attached.
Ideally, I'd like a hub that splits this FW800 into FW800 and FW400 jacks (2 of each)! But I've never seen such a hub, and am not getting clear answers from hardware vendors. USB hubs are easy to find, but Firewire?___

  • Is it possible to convert a firewire 800 port to a USB 3.0?

I have a mac-mini from 2011; one generation before they switched to USB 3.  Is there any way of converting the firewire 800 port to USB 3.0, that would allow me to take advantage of newer, high-speed peripherals?

Unfortunately, getting a new computer is cost prohibitive.  The high cost of Thunderbolt peripherals makes that unlikely, as well.  It seems silly to invest in further Firewire products--when you can find them--given the switch by Apple.

  • Can i use my firewire 800 port with a usb adapter?

Can i use an adapter in the firewire 800 port to convert it to usb?

Yes, Their are some on the market, but I don't know how well they work.

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

  • Thunderbolt to firewire 800 coverter vs. usb 2.0

Have an external hard drive that has firewire 800 and USB 2.0. Trying to decide if the firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter or using the straight usb is the better connection. Drive holds my iTunes Library and VM Fusion "drive".
    Any ideas?

Since Thunderbolt is so much faster then FW800, you should be able to see as good a performance on FW800 as the disk drive is able to provide. The drive itself is going to be the weak link in your chain.

  • First Gen MacBook Pro and no firewire 800. Suggestions for capturing video?

My first gen MacBook Pro only has one Firewire 400 port and nothing else (I got in a argument with a mac store clerk regarding the truth of this statement). My external hard drive has one Firewire 400 port, two Firewire 800 ports, and 1 USB. So far as I know the standard for most video cameras are still Firewire 400, in which case daisy chaining is out of the question (considering I will be using that port to connect to my computer). Any suggestions on how to capture video straight from a deck to my external hard drive?
    Thanks!
    MacBookPro1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I think you can use a FW800/400 adapter and daisy chain your camera to the drive.

  • Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 Adapter

I have a 2010 MacMini that I want to add the Pegasus Tech J4 RAID Drive to. It is Thunderbolt only. Does anyone make a Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter? I know Apple makes the reverse, FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt.
    Thanks for the help.

All Thunderbolt adapters are only from computer to
peripheral.  There is no adapter that works in the
    opposite direction.
Therefore, if you want to use the Pegasus Thunderbolt
device, you need a computer with a Thunderbolt port.

  • Are there any problems using the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter?

I found the only way to migrate my old mac to my new i
mac was to use a firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter, or ethernet. Am I correct?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can also migrate wirelessly > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
However, I recommend you to use FireWire to migrate from your old Mac because it will be much faster than Wi-Fi or Ethernet, so if your old Mac has got a FireWire port, buy the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter for your Late 2012 iMac and migrate from your old computer

  • How do I make video editing less laggy in PS cs6?

I'm using Photoshop CS6 to edit some video clips together, but it's super laggy. How do I make it so it's less laggy? Will putting my video files on an external harddrive work?
I'm using a MacBook Pro which is fast, but the video editor eats up my computer's speed like tiger.

    Welcome to the forum.
First, what are the full specs. of those Video files? On a Mac, you can use the utility, Media Inspector, to get the full details.
What are the specs. of your MBP, and especially the CPU speed, and number of cores? The reason for this info, is that if you have any form of the H.264 CODEC in those Video files, you will need a very fast CPU to smoothly handle them.
As for the external HDD, that will depend entirely on the connection type/speed, and then the speed of the HDD itself - you want at least 7200RPM. For connection type, you want an absolute minimum of FireWire 800 (IEEE-1394b), and USB 3.0 (not USB 2.0), or eSATA will be even better. If you do not have H.264 material, then the I/O (Input/Output) will be the biggest bottleneck - with H.264, then the CPU is the biggest bottleneck.
Let us know a bit more please, and good luck,
    Hunt

  • Which iMac for Video Editing?

    Hi Folks,
After about 7 years with my Dell 4550 I am close to making a purchase of a new Mac and leaving the Windows world - Yeah!!! My decision is now coming down to how much I should spend on the video card. Basically it is a 300-500 premium to upgrade to the discrete video cards compared to the integrated graphics in the 2.66 model (granted you do get a ~10% faster processor at 2.93 as well).
What I am wondering is that for video editing (using iMovie) is there a significant difference in performance of the machine based on the video card? I do not play video games on the computer much as I have a Wii and XBOX already to have that area covered. Primarily I will use it for iTunes, iPhoto and HD Video (have a new baby we need to record!)
So my choices are mainly these three configurations to select from:
    iMac, 24-inch, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Part Number: Z0FP
    2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    1.0TB Serial ATA Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
    $1599
    iMac, 24-inch, 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Part Number: Z0FQ
    2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    1.0TB Serial ATA Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB
    $1899
    iMac, 24-inch, 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Part Number: Z0FQ
    2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    1.0TB Serial ATA Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
    $2049
    iMac, 24-inch, 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Part Number: Z0FQ
    2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    1.0TB Serial ATA Drive
    ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
    $2099
Since I will not be gaming, are the more expensive video cards worth the premium in relation to video editing, iTunes and iPhoto main purposes of the computer?

I wouldn't stress it much. I recently bought a new iMac, but for years I have been editing my home movies with iMovie on my old G4 eMac. Granted these are standard def movies, not HD, but the point is, a lot of video editing doesn't require a lot of video horsepower. Most of your time will be spent scanning through thumbnails, picking parts to cut out, etc. None of it requires fantastic video displays and most of the time you are not paying attention to the quality of the playback (as long as it isn't stuttering) and are more concentrating on the content to figure out what you want to keep, trim, edit, etc. 90+% of the time you are not actually watching a lot of video simply playing.
So get what you can reasonably afford. If you can afford the best model, then go ahead and get it. But if money is a little tight and you have to make some tradeoffs, with digital video you will want to put money towards storage. Hard drive space gets used up FAST. So get the 1TB upgrade and invest some cash toward one or two large external hard drives (one dedicated just to storing your video and then the other for back ups, extra misc. storage, time machine, etc.). Fortunately external hard drives these days are about $100 give or take per Terabyte. For the drive you will want to use for your video work, I suggest spending the extra cash and getting a model with Firewire 800 connection, not just USB.
    Have fun,
    Patrick
