Video: Editing on new MacBook from a Pro Editor

Hey guys, in an effort to give back to the community, I made a video to review the new MacBook and show how it fits into my own editing workflow (final cut studio) and whether or not it can adequately edit RED footage. It gets pretty technical in some parts so if you're really wanting to see the MacBook put through it's paces, you'll enjoy this.

Thanks for the video. Nicely done!
I hope Apple takes notice that pros like yourself use the MacBook too and bring Firewire back! I too invested in a workstation-class Apple desktop, but would rather have a smaller (and more affordable) form-factor for editing audio away from the "office." USB 2 just won't cut the mustard for serious multitrack audio projects and the USB-only MacBook is as incompatible with my Firewire audio recording gear as it is with your Red camera.
Thanks again!

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

  • Witch software can i use to do split screen on video editing on a macbook

witch software can i use to do split screen on video editing on a macbook pro
please apple people without using the very expensive final cut

iMovie 11 has split screen. Enable the Advanced Tools in iMovie Preferences. Then drag one clip on top of the other and choose split screen.
Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro will allow you to do this with a lot more control.

  • Mobile Video Editing on the Macbook Pro 13'' - Some questions...

This is my first time visiting this forum, and I just wanted to get some thoughts on a mobile video editing setup I am looking to create... Here's what I'd like to do:
    - Use a Macbook Pro 13'' as my primary editing machine using Final Cut Studio for relatively small, but important projects.
    - I want to be able to edit as speedily as possible, but on a moderate budget. I know that keeping FCS on the MBP's main HD and editing video on an external drive is the best way to go. Also, because the fastest interface option on a MBP is Firewire 800, I am thinking of using a G-Raid Mini 500GB drive in Raid 0 for both maximum speed and portability. But I also want to be able to easily backup any video edited on the external drive. I am weary of the fact that MBP only has 1 Firewire port (and in this scenario, I need to connect a G-Raid drive, a DV camera, and yet another external drive for backing up the G-Raid Mini)
    Oh what a pain.
First, something I can't seem to find out is... if I want to load video to the G-Raid drive, I'm going to have to daisy chain my DV camera to it. If the DV camera is Firewire 400, will this lower the Firewire 800's port on the MBP down to 400 as well, thus kind of crippling the idea of speedy Raid 0?
And second, assuming I can hook up both the G-Raid and the DV camera to the Firewire 800 port without degrading speed... what would the best way be to go for backing up the G-Raid? I am thinking of using a USB 2.0 500GB drive, and using some sort of backup automation software. Any suggestions there?
What I'm looking for is mobility, functionality, secure backup for everything I shoot. I should have gone for a MBP 17'' with a Express slot, which would solve these potential issues... but again, I'm on a budget - and can't break the bank on this right now.
Any responses or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Zac

    Thanks for the response.
But a couple things... the reason I'm going with the 13'' is purely out of circumstance. I have a friend who just didn't want it anymore, and is selling it to me insanely cheap. Also, I already have extra monitors
I think what I am going to do is this:
G-RAID 500GB running in Raid-0 connected to the FW800 port. From there, when I need to capture, I will daisy chain the DVX-100 to the G-RAID... which will cut the FW down 400 from what I have read. After my video is captured, I will disconnect the DVX100, so I can get the FW800 G-RAID back up to proper speed during actual editing. When I want to do backups, I will connect a regular 500GB G-DRIVE and run a clone of the G-RAID everynight after I finish editing.
This solves a few problems, but it doesn't solve the issue of an external TV for native viewing while editing. Personally, I don't think I will always need this, but my DVX100 does do passthrough. (anytime I do it though, it will bump my FW speed back down to 400) So I can either do that, or I can look into S-Video USB options (which I haven't researched yet)
It won't be the most ideal setup in the world, but it seems like a lot of people with these newer Macbook Pro's are suffering the same kinds of issues. Hopefully I will manage.
If anyone has any further suggestions, please let me know. Anyone else with a Macbook Pro 13''? What kind of mobile setups have you come up with?

I used same adopters when I migrated my 2013 Mac Pro from my 2009 Mac Mini.
Did the 2012 Mac Mini have the same OSX version as you are using on the Mac Pro?
It could be incompatible with the Mac Pro. I ask because I have n iSight camera (FR400) that worked with my 2009 Mini with before Mavericks but would not work with Maverick. It would also not work with my 2102 Mac MIn but the camera but not mix work on my 2103 Mac Pro

  • Any suggestions on a good video editing software for MacBook Pro

I have just joined the MacBook Pro community would like an idea for good video software options

Also, compare the hardware specification (not just minimums) needed to actually
use the video editing software; plus consider external storage options of huge
capacity since most portable computers don't really have all that much storage.
A few years ago some suggested Avid Media Composer as professional software
but then in the same discussion, said the MacBook Pro may not be able to handle
the demands of the application; and went on to suggest an Apple Mac Pro tower.
Some software needs require further study prior to committing resources & funds
to discover perhaps the product may/may not be adequate. Avid likely is still costly.
Hopefully you can get a great editor with a few creative options, for a decent price.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Streaming video choppy on new macbook

Why are all internet videos choppy on my new Macbook Pro? The videos are constantly buffering. I can only see about 5 seconds at a time. This is a brand new Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion. I have had the unit for about a month. The video has been a problem from day one. Video problems are not just Youtube but all sites I go to. My PC has no problem with the same sites, same network.

I'd be wondering whether something that you have brought across from the older machine may be giving it indigestion, mpeterd.
You might find it worth taking a look at Activity Monitor when the problem occurs to see if any process is hogging CPU time.
One known "issue" after migration from earlier Macs or OS versions can involve a new process called "fontworker" under Snow Leopard. If you have brought across old fonts from the MB then it may be that some are duplicates of Snow Leopard fonts, or corrupted, or simply too old for the new OS. Might be worth checking with Font Book for duplicated or corrupted fonts. Another possibility may be a corupted "Spotlight" index. If Activity Monitor shows a process called "mds" or "mdsworker" running overtime, then this is likely to be the cause.
There are various other possibilities here, too, though. Activity Monitor is a good place to check for such things first, before considering seeking replacement. You may well find that the problem recurs even with a new, perfectly healthy, computer when you bring things across from the old one.

  • Video editing on a MacBook

This fall I'm definitely going to buy either a MacBook or a MacBook Pro. I intend to do video editing (though it isn't my primary focus) on whichever one I buy, but I've heard if you are going to edit video, you should go with the MacBook Pro. Agree? Disagree?

    Hi Matthew,
It depends how professional you want to go and what kind of software you want to use.
I use iMovie and Final Cut Express for my macbook, and I quite satisfied with the output.
But if you want to go with Final cut studio / pro, you must consider MacBookPro, since intel GMA 950 is not supported on that software.
Just calculate your budget and your productivity goal, macbookpro will give you more flexibility of software choice and better graphic chip set.
    Good Luck

  • Can someone suggest an affordable external hard drive for use with FCPX and video editing on my Macbook Pro Retina

I have a Macbook Pro Retina from 2012 and I only got the 250GB hard drive.  I'm getting ready to purchase a Panosonic HC-X920 to use with Final Cut Pro X already installed on my laptop.  Since I know the file sizes are going to be so big, can anyone suggest an affordable external drive fast enough to keep up with editing the video?  I'm not a pro and use it for family and personal projects.
I prefer some thunderbolt options since I haven't had a chance to use the inputs since I got my macbook pro. I just don't know what is necessarily too little or too big and too cheap and too expensive for my needs.  Thank you.

OWC is a Mac specialist and a very trustworthy vendor.  I have dealt with them and their technical stall on many occasions.  Hence you may look at what they offer and be assured that they will stand behind what they sell:

I suspect that for your needs, a 1 TB drive is going to be the minimum.

  • Video Freezing on New Macbook Pro

I bought a 15" macbook pro last week, and videos are freezing regularly. Sometimes the audio continues and the video catches up after 30 seconds, sometimes not. These are online or itunes or homemade videos that my 4-year old macbook used to handle just fine. I got the larger pro because I'm away from home a lot and wanted a wider screen to watch video on. Anyone having similar problems or know ways to help alleviate this problem?

I'd be wondering whether something that you have brought across from the older machine may be giving it indigestion, mpeterd.

  • What kind of hard drive should I get for video editing on my MacBook Pro

I work in film preservation, which requires a lot of rendering of DPX files.
I currently have a late-2009 MacBook Pro.  It's having a lot  of problems such as freezing and overheating, so I think it might be best to just replace the hard drive. Any tips on ssd vs hdd for quick rendering performance? Also, the optical drive is not functional so if like to use that as extra hard drive space as well.
Don't know too much about hard drives, and I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks everyone,
The symptoms don't exactly correlate with the ones listed on the page about resetting the Systems Management Controller. Typically when I'm running a demanding program like After Effects or Compressor alongside Chrome, the screen will typically freeze up, though I retain control of the mouse. I can't click anything though, and it usually takes about a minute or two (after I've pressed command-option-esc) for the mac to start responding again. I think it's because I'm trying to make the mac do things it wasn't designed to do, such as run these processor-heavy programs. Lately it's also been freezing very frequently while playing Netflix. The movie just freezes, though I can still hear the sound continuing, and then in about a minute or two it will snap back to the currently playing part of the movie.
As far as overheating, I've made it possible for my mac to perform with these programs by either keeping it on an icepack or heavily ventilated with an exterior fan. It seems that after heavy bouts of using these programs though, the freezing frequency and seriousness is worse. If I don't keep the mac really well ventilated and it gets too hot, the screen just goes black, everything stops, and then in a few seconds it pops back as if nothing happened, running normally.
The model of my mac is:
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)
    MacBookPro5,5
    MB991xx/A
    13.3"/2.53/2X2GB/250-5400
However, I did add some more RAM when I go the computer to help it along.
Thanks again for all and any help! It's very much appreciated.

  • Larger Harddrive for video editing on a MacBook Pro

I would like to upgrade my harddrive and I am not sure if I should purchase a larger internal harddrive or purchase an external harrdrive. Most of the work will be away from base hence the purchase of the laptop. Power and portability is sometimes a problem which is why I am more inclined to purchase a larger internal harddrive 320/500 GB harddrive?
I work in television news and just having the laptop without external equipment appeals to me or would it be better to go external? The Camera I have bought is the SONY HVR A1 (hi-def 1080i) camera.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Justin Howard

    Hi Michel
I have found that power points are not always available for various reasons, sometimes many journalists using laptops, I was thinking that a harddrive internal would be better-does external harddrives get power from the firewire ports? If so then I would go this route. Packages not more than 120 seconds in duration and 10-20 minutes of source material to work on-I am in news.
    Thanks for the response!!

  • Why can't i play you tube videos on my new macbook pro?

i've downloaded adobe flash player for mac on safari, but i'm still unable to play videos on you tube,  can somebody help please?

The Flash plug-in failure on Lion, is a Safari issue that can be fixed with these steps:
My Flash Player plug-in would not play videos on YouTube (using Safari in Lion). It turned out that my Safari settings needed to be reset after the recent Lion 10.7.4 and Flash upgrades.  I called Apple tech...
This is what we did to fix it:
    1. Open Safari.
    2. Go to top left menu, under "Safari" click on "Reset Safari."
    3. UNCHECK the first two boxes, leave the next three checked, plus UNCHECK the next two, and keep the last three checked.
    4. Hit "Reset"
    5. After the reset finishes, Safari will relaunch and you can test Flash by going to YouTube to see that videos will now play.
    Thanks Apple Care!
